Had the best time! (Heads up - this shop is not one of the tents directly on the sand, as of July 2026! They are one street behind the beach). Really nice owner and the fee you pay includes a free rash guard to wear during your lesson. My partner and I booked a semi-private lesson, so we got the benefits of more hands-on support from our instructor with catching each wave. A Hawaii native, our instructor Mikey knows that water and will keep you safe, but isn't going to let you waste your time while you're out there. We were a little nervous, both well into our 30s and having never surfed before, but Mikey didn't indulge our nerves one bit. He's the push you need if you're feeling hesitant! Thanks to Mikey, my partner and I both caught and rode (stood up and everything!) our first waves ever. After your lesson, Star Beachboys also lets you rent a surfboard for the remainder of the day for free as a benefit of booking with them. Amazing experience. The company was authentic Hawaiian. Our instructor didn't waste all our time on the beach. He gave us 3 perfect instructions, when followed, got us right up. Every single wave he had us catch was perfect. I rode half all the way into shore, the other half I wasn't following instructions and fell lol. My son in law did it perfectly each time and even learned to walk the nose his first time out. Highly recommend. Best restaurant was around the corner as well! This is my second time with Star Beachboys. My son had Kalani as instructor last year and Todd this year for private lessons. They were both amazing teachers!! They were encouraging and skillful. I recommend book their instructors same time for consecutive days if possible to get progressive learning. My teen's smile was priceless. Todd even got a photographer to help us film video and take photos for my son surfing. I don't think it is included but he didn't even charge me! Great instructors, the two guys and our instructor Vee were all great! I love Vee! She had such a positive vibe and just a very friendly demeanor, showing people what Aloha spirit is like! I also appreciated how the surfboards were already on the beach, so we didn't have to carry them across the street, saving up some energy to surf. The surfboards they had were really long foam boards, which provided stability for beginners but they also had some real surfboards for rent at an affordable price. Also, it's in the heart of waikiki 2 blocks across from the Duke statue so it's pretty easy to find. Although there's a very small parking lot next to it, don't expect to have any parking space, so arrive early and have a back up parking plan, or walk or Uber. After we paddled out to the water where it's still kind of shallow enough for the instructors to stand on, they would give us a push for some momentum so we could catch the waves. I didn't know it was so important, because by myself, I couldn't paddle fast enough to catch the wave and I missed a few and one of the instructors was teasing me which is kind of funny haha. I would've rated five stars but the receptionist was not very friendly especially on the phone, but a little better in person I guess. I know they are busy, but she could still be a little more friendly. If you can get past that or if you're lucky enough that she sounds friendly to you, this is a great surfing school! read more

Went really well, kalani was our instructor and he's very chill surfer dude he's about fun and safety. My boyfriend and I both learned how to stand up super fast with him and my sister and her husband are chubby and they both learned how to stand up as well and they had rash guards available for five dollars of all sizes. Made a reservation early that morning for a 9am private lesson. It was $125 for 75 minutes, $138 with the website tax. About two hours after reserving online, once the office opened, I called and was able to confirm my lessons. The office was a block from my hotel. I was able to safely leave my cell phone and towel there while Mikey took me out to the water. Once we got to the beach, Mikey talked me through the basics while on the sand (how to paddle, stand, turn, etc). Once I felt ready we went into the water. Mikey helped me catch a lot of waves! He watched me and yelled out instructions as I was riding. He asked if I wanted photos and was able to have another surf company take photos of me since this company's guy was off. I was able to pay for some cool photos! I spent 45 minutes in the water, burned 306 calories. Who knew surfing was so tough. Overall a great time! read more

We had a great lesson with Oka (Ako?) - an older gentleman - for a semi private lesson. It was our first time surfing and he made sure we caught a couple of good waves before sending us off. He was friendly and got us in the water quick! Perhaps could have been a bit more welcoming, especially for learners who may not bode well with frustration. But we were able to get the hang of it with his instruction and had a great time overall! We bought photos from a photographer they partnered with for $20 per person for the full reel of photos he took. We'll definitely rent boards from here next time we're at Waikiki! read more

Highly recommend for the group lessons. After checking in at the store, we walked about 5 min to the beach where the surf boards were. After a few pointers we took to the waters and got started right away. I had Todd as my instructor who was fun and very helpful. He wanted to make sure we caught as many waves as possible and corrected our form while we were paddling back or waiting for the waves. I want to give them 5 stars but when I returned a different day, the check-in person was very standoffish. It was a different person than before, and she was quite rude when I was inquiring about the surfboard rentals. It was so awkward that my friend and I didn't really know how to respond. read more

I had Todd and Max as instructors for a group lesson and had a fantastic & fun time! You can rent a rashguard for $5 which is a great deal and will help you on the water. Check-in and set-up were easy and went smoothly. Todd spent about 10 minutes with us on the sand to go over basic techniques and positions, then we went in the water for the duration of the lesson. Todd and Max split the group up pretty evenly to help each of us catch some waves. I was in Max's group and he was a phenomenal instructor. He gave me concise and helpful feedback after each wave I attempted, which I was surprised he was able to remember each attempt of mine (and the others as well). I was able to catch several waves, especially towards the end which I was very happy about. I learned a ton and had a super thrilling time! The pros: You're learning from competitive surfers who are seriously talented, and they do know how to get you up on the board. I got up on many waves after not having been able to do that in the past, and I feel pretty confident on the board now. It's also a good workout - I feel really strong after an hour and a half out on the water. I'm used to body boarding and getting hit with waves and I didn't mind having to paddle out multiple times. The prices are really reasonable and they have a photographer who will take photos of your lesson. The lessons are right on Waikiki Bay. I'm definitely happy I did it. The cons: The instructors take this really seriously and it's not going to be a chill time in the water, so I don't recommend taking a lesson here if you're not great at ocean swimming and you're not used to being hit with waves. You'll have to paddle a LOT. That said, if you've taken a lesson in the past, they take teaching really seriously and will really fix your form and get you out on a wave. read more

In town for 1 week and stand-up paddle boarding was on my bucket list. The Beach Rental Service next to Moana Surfrider hotel charged king's ransom so we walked along the beach looking for other viable options. Near the Duke's statue some guy approached us offering rentals. He ID himself as from the Star beachboys. We looked on Yelp to confirm it's a legit biz and he was actually in 1 of the Yelpers' photos. $30 for 3 hours sounded like a bargain, excluding lessons. It's my 2nd time doing stand up paddle board, he gave me basic instruction with stance and where to tie the ankle string, and off I went. After my harrowing reefing experience in Maui I chose to stay inside the lagoon this time. It offered some measure of shelter and most importantly "reef-free". There was a large gap in the middle of the lagoon where the waves still come crashing through and it offered me enough thrills for the next 2 hours. read more

My instructor insulted me during introductions and had no patience for me when I couldn't get his instruction quickly. I spent the next hour just doing my own thing and largely staying away from him. His instructions were unclear and useless. When I, instead, used the technique that was taught by someone else, I was able to get up on the board and ride a few waves. He asked my wife if I was upset at him after criticizing my technique even though my technique worked and his didn't. read more

This place is like a 5 minute walk from Waikiki beach! Renting out a board was cheap, quick, and easy. It was $10 for 2 hours which seemed cheap (idk how much other shops were renting them out for though), so I decided to give it a try even though it's been years since I've taken surf lessons. The place takes Apple pay which was really convenient since I didn't have my wallet with me. I wasn't sure what board to get, but the worker was nice and suggested the right size for me. There is are some cubbies and boxes where you can place your belongings, but no changing room, so come in your swim gear! read more

Beware!! You might be joining surfing bootcamp instead of surfing class! I get that surfing instructors, and Hawaiian locals in general, have to deal with way too many disrespectful and frustrating tourists, but... Basically, we paid over $200 to get yelled at for an hour. Our instructor ignored us for 10 minutes when we got to the beach, then proceeded to teach us how to get on the board EXTREMELY sternly. My husband didn't do exactly as he said, and the instructor got PISSED and sat my husband down like a kid, and told him off. He even yelled at another instructor while we were there. But that other instructor seemed nice, so I wish we got him instead. A terrible experience was made worse because we got seasick, so we had to leave the ocean early. I probably would have had a better experience learning from youtube. read more
