Old dudes heading for their first surf in Waikiki
    Kirsten V.

My husband (64) and his friend (62) had an incredible time during their surf lesson. These are old dudes from Chicago (boaters and water skiers, not surfers) who have always wanted to surf. Kevin, the instructor, could not have been more perfect for these two. They both hit many waves and were sufficiently exhausted afterwards. The photographer was great too. Thank you Moniz Surf, you guys rock.

Rocco was great to work with. He got our 10 year old up in no time. We have used Faith and the Moniz family to teach our kids to surf for almost 10 years. Consistently top notch! Purchase the photos too. They are always excellent.

Isaiah was phenomenal. This is hands down one of the best surfing lessons to choose from. It's a little more pricy than you would pay with other ppl but you're paying for the patience and quality here. This past Saturday I selected another group lesson from a different company for a 2hr lesson but was not happy with the instructor. We didn't even get the full 2hrs we had paid for. Now today, Tuesday we decided to go with Isaiah based on the fact that the family are pro surfers and felt like they would know what they were doing, and boy was I glad we did. He took our 11yr old out and was super patient with him. I felt completely at ease not being in the water with them and knowing my son would be ok. Isaiah was so accommodating to even get us in at an 8am lesson time when they don't start until 9am. We will definitely be coming back and paying for a 2hr lesson next time we are here.

Hawaii has so many blessings on the island, but one place that has become very special to me is Moniz Family Surf. For the past year, I have had a love/hate relationship with the ocean. My first time surfing since the pandemic, I left San Onofre bloody, bruised, frustrated, distressed and discouraged with my everything hurting. I was able to squeeze in a 9:00 am surf lesson last November before my friend's wedding with Isaiah Moniz with the intention of understanding the ocean, so I didn't fear it. Isaiah taught me about edict, showed me how to navigate the channels, and position myself properly within the line up, and slowly the negative emotions that I had associated with surfing began to fade and my mind began to quiet down when he reminded me to breathe. He showed me how to tuck into the ocean during a fall, and showed me how to stand slowly moving from left knee to right knee, eventually planting my dominant foot between my hands, curving my hips, and bringing my stance low with feet planted shoulder width apart. When he gave me a push into the ocean and said, "You got this," I was finally able to stand for the first time in over a year after getting tossed, held under water and getting pummeled wave after wave and thrown into rocks at Trails in California. He taught me how to read the waves and feel the ocean, and I accomplished more in that hour and a half than I had in an entire year. When learning a new craft as a beginner, your teacher matters. I think the best part of the lesson was observing his connection to the ocean- it was his playground. There was no stress, no chaos. The ocean merely reflected his goodness, tranquility, fun, and love for it all- that is what I needed to see. "You got this" was what I needed to hear. "Ha" breathing in the life of it all was what I needed to feel. I just needed to open my heart to the ocean, and in that moment the surf lesson became a life lesson- to position yourself to find a sense of peace among the chaos, and breathe in the mana. I left Moniz Family Surf captured by the ocean. Thank you Isaiah for sharing your love of the ocean with me. When choosing surf schools in Waikiki, Moniz Family Surf is the place to go for education and aloha spirit!

These guys are it! Incredible staff, location, instruction and gear. Liam and Uncle Kev were amazing. So fun I signed up for another lesson in a couple days. Can't wait!

semi-private lesson - Micah sent my wife and I on the same wave!

The BEST experience of our trip! My wife and I did a semi-private lesson with Micah Moniz; as a first time surfer I wasn't sure I was going to get the hang of it, but the gentle waves in Waikiki and Micah's great instruction made sure I got to stand up not once but many times! Micah is extremely experienced and knew exactly when to push us with the waves to get us as many chances to stand as possible. They also have a photographer and videographer to capture the moments that you get up on the board, which were amazing against the backdrop of Diamond Head and the blue waters of Waikiki. Even as it got crowded in the afternoon, Micah made sure we were safe and helped me learn how to steer to avoid others. The location is super close, right across from the Hyatt and across the street from Waikiki beach. Afterwards we looked up Micah's Instagram and saw how amazing he surfs and knew we just got a lesson from a real pro. Would do this again 10 times out of 10.

The beach - perfect spot to learn - very surfer should do Waikiki at least a couple times

Better service & surf boards than other board rentals in the area. Worth the few extra dollars if you value quality experiences.

The surf conditions that day weren't great (only about 1-2 ft), but you honestly would never have known it based on how much fun our kids had. Victor was an outstanding instructor--very friendly, incredibly patient, and amazing with kids. The twins kept saying he was "very fun," super supportive, and genuinely enthusiastic the entire lesson. He made them feel confident and excited, even with small waves. The pricing was also very reasonable for the quality of instruction and experience. Overall, this was one of the highlights of our trip, and we couldn't have asked for a better day of surfing for our teens. We would strongly recommend Moku Hawaii and Victor to anyone--especially families with kids or teens. We will absolutely book with them again!

I was put in an odd spot. Surely not in my comfort zone…read more You see, a friend from Japan came to Hawaii and when asked what he wanted to do, surfing came up. As a local boy born and raised in Oahu, I'm embarrassed by the fact that I cannot swim. Surfing clearly out of the picture. I used to work in the Japanese tour agency many blue moons ago where I recall a surfing school that offers surfing lessons. My friend already knows how to surf so I didn't think this was for him so I asked one of my physical therapists who surfs regularly. He introduced me to a surfing school that's at Ala Moana Beach where I was given their website, which is also available in Japanese. I forwarded the information to my friend prior to his arrival to Honolulu where he didn't jump at it and said he'd think about it. On his arrival I drove him to his hotel on Kalakaua Ave and upon check in we saw a rack of surfboards nearby where I asked if they were rentals. The staff advised the boards belong to the in-house guests who were keeping them as storage while not in use. When asked about rentals, the front desk staff advised us to inquire with Moku Hawaii (MH) as their rates are 1/2 to what the businesses are asking for across the street on the beach. MH has been in business since 1985 where they hail from Japan. They started off as a clothing company but transitioned over to a surf shop offering surf lesson and rental business. We walked over and soon found MH, which is on the 1F at the corner of Koa Ave and Uluniu Ave. We were greeted by a friendly, young female staff who welcomed us and answered our multiple questions. With its locality, reasonable rates and customer service, my friend liked MH and decided to look no further. While checking out their inventory, my friend noticed hard boards and was hoping for soft boards. The staff guided us to those soft boards where it's available in either long or short. You will need to complete their rental form which to our surprise is quite flexible. For example, you can initially request for a 2 hr package but in the event you go overcast, you just pay the difference of $5, which is the price difference between 2 hr course and the next course of up to 4 hrs. MH gives back to the community as they sponsor multiple local keiki surf contests. That's so awesome. So, if you should be in a bind where someone asks you for a surf school in Waikiki, look no further and guide them to MH. We were surprisingly impressed with their surf shop and their amazing customer service. They open from 6am and close at 8pm

As an avid Peanuts/Snoopy fan, both times I was so excited to visit and made a point of fitting it into the itinerary. However, the main reason it doesn't get five stars is because of the particularly high price point for what it is. Most items are priced higher than other similarly themed, small shops in Honolulu. For instance, some stickers here are in the $5.50 range instead of $3-$4 range. Basic thin canvas tote bags are about $40. It starts to feel like they're really taking advantage of fans and tourists and push a higher limit simply because "they can." The selection is really cute though, and items do sell out. So your options really depend on when you happen to visit. My first time in October 2023, both locations were all out of crossbody tote bags. This time around (February 2026), they were available in both locations. Many of the other items were the same both times, but there were maybe a few new designs. Also, this time around there were none available plushie keychains, which I neglected to purchase the first time around as they're over $20 each. This is just outside the Waikiki beachfront area, so not really easily walkable from there. Parking is street parking. You might have to loop around a couple of times, but it shouldn't take too long.
