Wish I could give 10 stars for this amazing surf lesson by Al!!! My sister and I were always so scared to try surfing, even though we have been to Hawaii multiple times. Finally after our 8th visit, we decided to finally give it a shot, although we were still a bit hesitant and nervous.. we heard a lot of stories about how hard it is to surf, even for extremely athletic people. Al was a TOP NOTCH, professional, and most importantly, a fun instructor! He gave us the useful tips on how not to fall, emphasized on ways to avoid hazardous situations, and always kept an eye out on ways for us to improve our surfing. Not only did we successfully ride waves during our first lesson, we were confident to tackle even BIGGER waves the next day! Unfortunately we were catching a flight the next morning which caused issues for booking our next lesson.. Al is patient, helpful and kind. We would not hesitate to return during our next trip to Hawaii. Highly recommend this lesson to anyone who doesn't feel confident about surfing - also I would opt to pay extra money to get some cool photos!! Amazing morning lesson with Al!! We had a 2hour semi-private lesson in great conditions for $55 each with the Yelp discount, which is an incredible deal. My boyfriend and I are both snowboarders so are familiar with balance and steering but needed to learn surf applications like popping up and picking waves. Al did a great job of teaching us based on our skill levels and making sure we could do it on our own once we left, gradually giving us less and less instruction. Al and Darren were amazing with our kiddos. They were so patient and thorough with their training before they got into the water. My 11 year old son and 9 year old daughter both got up on their surfboard on the first try!!! Took a surfing lesson this past week. Very easy to understand Al, and he gives a lot of personalized attention. Plus he is SUPER FUN!! Really breaks down the mechanics of it for you before you even get in the water so you know what you are doing. He is also great as far as safety goes. Spent a lot of time talking about how to protect yourself from injury and how to not be a danger to others, making sure to avoid jellyfish, talking about the tide/surf, etc. Wanted to book another session before we left, but unfortunately the jellies were out. My husband and I were in Oahu and wanted to try surfing. I was super nervous trying surfing for the first time. I have this perhaps... slightly irrational fear of sharks and fishes so going surfing was extra scary for me. But Shane was amazing. He talked to me about how where we are going has no sharks or fishes except for one lonely Hawaiian state fish (you know the one with the super long name?). He is super chill and laid back and even laughed and told me he's never had to ease someone's fears about fishes/sharks lol Anyways, he gave a quick orientation to us (safety, basic positioning/stance) and we practiced a few times before heading to the waters. He assisted in paddling and really made us feel at ease. We are both able to go out with him on our own and actually ride some of waves during our first time surfing! I took two surfing lessons with Al and had a blast. Both times he took my friends and I to areas away from crowds so that we could focus on our technique. She wasn't able to do it (probably because she had other lessons happening) but recommended someone else and told me everything I needed to know about how to meet the other instructor. Al is the man! He took three of us out at the same time we were all at different levels and he knew how to choose waves for us perfectly. He made sure we were all safe and we all had a good time. He spent time with us before hand and showed us what to do in different situations. As far as I know it's the best price on the island. Within one hour we all were up and surfing. read more

I recently visited Oahu and met up with Jenny of Waikiki Surf Lessons! She was amazing! Although I am a beginner to intermediate surfer and didn't need lessons per say, Jenny took me out to several spots off Waikiki, showed me the "sweet take off spots," pushed me into waves, and introduced me to the locals. And trust me, Jenny knows everyone! She is the Godmother of Waikiki Beach! What I love most about Jenny is how she embodies the true Aloha spirit. She was kind to everyone out in the water from beginners to locals. I even watched in amazement as she offered tips to other instructors' students. She is a fabulous surfer herself. Was my first time ever trying surfing, so didn't know what to expect, but they had me up and riding waves right away. They use big 10"+ long boards that make it easier to balance and let you have fun right away even if you never surfed before. I had a blast with the experience, and so right after the lesson I purchased my own board so I can go surfing by myself when I have time. read more

She has been doing this for 17 years in Waikiki alone. She knows everybody on the beach, was a great teacher, and was super encouraging. My sister and I took beginner surfing lessons with Al on a whim while on vacation in Honolulu and we're so glad we did! I appreciate that Al was available on very short notice. I called him the night my family and I landed in Honolulu and he was able to squeeze us in for a early morning lesson (7am to 9am) the very next day. I would definetely recommend scheduling your lesson for the morning when the beach is empty and the waves are more calm. Al is a fantastic teacher!! He's incredibly knowledgeable, funny, warm and patient. He did a fantastic job quelling our nerves as this was our first time ever getting on a surfboard. We started off on land learning the basics of paddling, getting up on the board and positioning. Positioning is super important in surfing which Al emphasized heavily and helped us to readjust as we practiced catching waves. Afterwards, he took us into the water where the fun began! I was so surprised that I was able to get up on board and actually surf for several seconds on my first try. I also ate it a few times but not too painfully! I was very tired by the end of the lesson as I'm terribly out of shape but it was a very rewarding and memorable experience. I can't wait to go surfing again! Jenny you are fantastic! this was so much fun and wow sooo tiring...I have a new respect for surfers. Jenny has been doing this for a while and it was lovely to meet so many of her friends on the beach. My husband, daughter and myself had a two hour lesson with Jenny while on holiday after a recommendation from a friend and it was so good ok I was a chicken and did not stand but I did perfect the knee position a style of which I am very proud ..the other two did stand , oh well I'll perfect it next time...and believe me there will definately be a next time..... as Brett says you can tell Jenny does this because she loves it ..she was so encouraging and a delight to be around.. read more

If I could give more stars I absolutely would! I took my very first surf lesson with Al when I came here on vacation a few years ago. Now I live here and have been dying to learn more. I called Al and he took me for an advanced surf lesson right away! His beginner lesson I took before prepared me for another beach, bigger breaks, and faster waves! I had so much fun and am definitely going to keep going back. I have a lot more to learn but I can't believe how fast he's helped me advance already! Super professional, super helpful, and super fun! My mom and I had a lesson together with varying skill levels and Al made sure to give us individual feedback during a group lesson, assigning us different tasks and things to focus on. He was very thorough, warming us up and making sure we knew the motions by heart before going out. We were there on a windy weekday and met in the morning and had the beach practically to ourselves! Al is extremely knowledgable and really passionate about the sport; you can tell he teaches because he loves it, not for the money. He answered all of my questions about surfboards and progressing for the future and gave tons of detail. 110% recommend him to anyone who wants to learn surfing, especially those who feel uncomfortable in the water - he's a really reassuring presence. My family and I took surfing lessons with Al while on our trip in Hawaii and I am very happy we did. He provided everything you needed such as rash guards, surf boards and water shoes.vHe also knows when and where the best beginner waves are which were seven in the morning to nine. Even though it was a little early, it was worth. Surfing in the morning is definitely better because the beach is practically empty and the waves are pretty calm. We had such a fantastic time that we came back a second time and invited our friends to join. His lessons really helped because he would give you tips and tricks to finding the right wave and how to ride a good wave. We first started off on land as he taught us the basics of surfing such as paddling and standing. Then he took us into the water and began to help everyone find the right wave. Almost everyone during our lesson got up! Our family had such a great time surfing with Al. It was a great experience and I would definitely go again. Amazing! After trying to teach myself to surf all these years with no luck I decided to take a lesson. Jenny had me riding comfortably by the second wave. I had a blast! The fun in the surf turned out to be only the start though since Jenny was showing her art at an Art in the Park event by the Zoo. There she showed me how to play a lovely song on the ukulele. Absolutely great experience learning to surf with Albert! We had a group of 5 - 3 adults and 2 teens. When I booked, Albert was great about letting us know of some useful items, such as yoga pants for the women and rash guards, to be prepared for our lesson. He called the day before to confirm with us and texted me a map to find the meet up location easily. We were at the really gorgeous Queen's Beach Park and found him right away. He got us situated with reef shoes and boards and started with a brief warm up (surfing is a real workout!) and had us all on our boards to learn how to manuever and the way to get up. He gave us safety instruction and wove it into the surf instruction so that we knew what to expect and what to do. When we got out into the water to start surfing, all of us got on and up on our first or second wave. I (a mid 40's not-so-fit mom) even got up and was riding! Albert was keenly observing what each of us had to adjust and helped us fix our stances or movements as needed. He taught us how the water moves and how to read the waves. He was just fantastic! When I get back to Hawaii I'm surfing with Albert and Surf Lessons Waikiki again!! read more

Al is an amazing teacher. He got the world's most uncoordinated person (example: I fell repeatedly while trying to standup paddleboard in virtually calm waters before) up on a board during the first lesson! He's very knowledgable, great at explaining what he wants you to do (thoroughly goes over it before taking you out), and patient. He helps you get started and even once he's let go, is yelling instructions as you go. He knows the best places/times to go for conditions, but also to avoid the crowds (important if you're a noob and terrified of having to navigate around people). Rental included everything from rashguards to comedy. No regrets and would totally take another lesson from him. He taught me (the complete beginner) the proper way to get balanced on the board and how to find a good wave. He taught my husband (second timer) how to gain speed and ride the wave a little longer.
