I was put in an odd spot. Surely not in my comfort zone. You see, a friend from Japan came to Hawaii and when asked what he wanted to do, surfing came up. As a local boy born and raised in Oahu, I'm embarrassed by the fact that I cannot swim. Surfing clearly out of the picture. I used to work in the Japanese tour agency many blue moons ago where I recall a surfing school that offers surfing lessons. My friend already knows how to surf so I didn't think this was for him so I asked one of my physical therapists who surfs regularly. He introduced me to a surfing school that's at Ala Moana Beach where I was given their website, which is also available in Japanese. I forwarded the information to my friend prior to his arrival to Honolulu where he didn't jump at it and said he'd think about it. On his arrival I drove him to his hotel on Kalakaua Ave and upon check in we saw a rack of surfboards nearby where I asked if they were rentals. The staff advised the boards belong to the in-house guests who were keeping them as storage while not in use. When asked about rentals, the front desk staff advised us to inquire with Moku Hawaii (MH) as their rates are 1/2 to what the businesses are asking for across the street on the beach. MH has been in business since 1985 where they hail from Japan. They started off as a clothing company but transitioned over to a surf shop offering surf lesson and rental business. We walked over and soon found MH, which is on the 1F at the corner of Koa Ave and Uluniu Ave. We were greeted by a friendly, young female staff who welcomed us and answered our multiple questions. With its locality, reasonable rates and customer service, my friend liked MH and decided to look no further. While checking out their inventory, my friend noticed hard boards and was hoping for soft boards. The staff guided us to those soft boards where it's available in either long or short. You will need to complete their rental form which to our surprise is quite flexible. For example, you can initially request for a 2 hr package but in the event you go overcast, you just pay the difference of $5, which is the price difference between 2 hr course and the next course of up to 4 hrs. MH gives back to the community as they sponsor multiple local keiki surf contests. That's so awesome. So, if you should be in a bind where someone asks you for a surf school in Waikiki, look no further and guide them to MH. We were surprisingly impressed with their surf shop and their amazing customer service. They open from 6am and close at 8pm read more

This local surfboard rental shop is the best in Waikiki by some distance. Their rates are incredible: I rented for nearly a week for around $100 with the ability to swap boards and ride for as long as I wanted each day (they close at 8PM!). You really won't find better value anywhere. Their board selection is great and their staff is knowledgeable in helping you select a surfboard to suit your experience and style. I even spotted a few of their staff in the lineup at Canoes during their lunch break. And their location one block from Kalakaua Avenue makes it a most convenient way to maximize your enjoyment surfing the legendary Waikiki waves. Loved coming back to Moku this year and seeing so many of the same crew from last year. It speaks well of a business if it can hold on to good employees for the long run. Victor and Corbin were again great instructors and we enjoyed having Rick for the first time as well. Victor and several other instructors have a great generosity of spirit and will sometimes give advice even if you're just renting a board, not taking a class at that time. We had an absolutely fantastic experience with Moku Hawaii! Our 14-year-old twins did the 90-minute semi-private lesson with Victor, and it was the perfect amount of time--long enough to really learn and have fun without feeling rushed or exhausted. The surf conditions that day weren't great (only about 1-2 ft), but you honestly would never have known it based on how much fun our kids had. Victor was an outstanding instructor--very friendly, incredibly patient, and amazing with kids. The twins kept saying he was "very fun," super supportive, and genuinely enthusiastic the entire lesson. He made them feel confident and excited, even with small waves. The pricing was also very reasonable for the quality of instruction and experience. Overall, this was one of the highlights of our trip, and we couldn't have asked for a better day of surfing for our teens. We would strongly recommend Moku Hawaii and Victor to anyone--especially families with kids or teens. We will absolutely book with them again! read more

In an area where there is probably an abundance of surf shops that offer surfing lessons, Moku stood out to me because of it's affordable prices. Also, being located right across the street from my hotel and a block away from the beach helped with my decision on choosing them for my surf lesson. In each of my previous visits, I'd always say how I want to learn how to surf. Well, I finally decided to check it off my bucket list on this last visit. It was now or NEVER. I did a lot of internet research on a bunch of other popular shops before settling on Moku, and I am so glad I did. For a private lesson there are two prices. For one hour it is $100 (not including tax) and for an hour in a half its $150. I chose the latter. Purchasing a few days prior to my trip was a breeze. There was still a lot of time slots to choose from. I chose the earliest time slot possible on a Sunday, which was 6 a.m. If you're a beginner I highly recommend doing it earlier because there will be a lot less people out in the ocean so you're not trying to work your way around them out in the ocean. Afterwards, they'll send you a confirmation email along with some instructions prior to your arrival to the surf shop. For example, bring towels and water and sunscreen, and arrive 15 mins before your scheduled time. Once I arrived, I was immediately greeted by staff and was handed a release form to fill out. Then, I was immediately greeted by my instructor. She got me fitted for a rash guard and went over the do's and don'ts on what to do on the surf board and when we're out in the ocean. About 10-15 mins later, we were on our way across the street to the ocean. While we were in the ocean, my instructor was patient and great with giving me guidance as we were out in the water. She was equally as excited as I was the first time I stood up on the board and caught the wave. Overall, a great experience. My instructor was great. And I definitely will be doing another lesson or two the next time I am back in Oahu! read more

Best place for weekly surfboard rentals if you are staying in walking distance These guys open at 6am so I grabbed a Starbucks and then headed right to Moku for my sunrise session. Then again for sunset sessions. My only suggestion is i hope they get even more 10" and 11" foot logs. :) the weekly rental is a great deal if you're going to surf ‍ a lot like I do. I liked it so much I did it 3 weeks in a row. Nice staff and they store you're shoes and stuff while you surf. So convenient. One of the best values in Waikiki!!! read more

You can literally show up knowing nothing at all, owning no surf gear whatsoever, and they will get you equipped and in the water in fifteen minutes. Brian and his team have decades of experience working with all skill levels of all ages. Everyone who works there is easy going and will spend time getting you comfortable. Their pricing and equipment is much, much better than the kiosks on the beach. It's night and day. Most of the staff was super sweet! I was a returning customer for surf lessons, I think my instructors name was Max for this visit. He started out really nice and seemed like he was going to be encouraging, but as soon as we got in the water there was ZERO encouragement. I felt like I was inconveniencing him and also felt like he thought I was taking too long to paddle back out. He would paddle away and leave me behind (of course to follow him to where we were going next) but not look back to see how far away I was from him. I discovered that I was missing a part for my Go Pro and walked in to Moku at closing time and shared my dilemma with Brian. He looked around but didn't carry the part and told me to come back in the morning and said he would take care of me. When I stopped by the shop, the missing parts were sitting on the counter with my name on the bag, no charge. I understand that Larry Rios is not officially part of your team now, but my experience happened when he was operating through your shop. If he was an independent instructor renting boards from Moku at the time, that still means customers--like myself--could associate him with your business. My review is not about Moku itself, but about a serious issue with an instructor who was working in connection with your shop when I took my lessons. Additionally, the surf shop owner's daughter was present and even helped him get ready for my lesson. She witnessed his behavior and the way he harassed me, yet nothing was said or done to stop it. I also had a frustrating experience renting a board from Moku. Despite telling your staff I was a beginner, I was given a board that was unsuitable for someone at my level. When I returned it, I was repeatedly told to wash the board and leave no sand on it--even after I explained that, as a small woman, dragging it back from the beach made that nearly impossible. I even offered to wash it, but instead of assisting or acknowledging the difficulty, your staff just kept repeating the same comment. It felt dismissive and unhelpful. If Moku has completely severed ties with Larry Rios and no longer allows him to use your facilities in any way, I'm happy to update my review to reflect that. However, I stand by my experience and my warning to others. read more

Came to Waikiki the first week of April and conditions were pretty sad - Lake to 3 ft sometimes. Was looking for some surf shop and came across Moku which had the best prices and location combined overall. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, and helped me pick out the right board for my skill level and the conditions that day. They also gave me some useful tips on where to catch the best waves. I normally ride a shortie in LA/OC but was traveling with my grom lady who need a big board. So we opted for an 8'6" and 9'6" and stayed at Waikiki Beach. The rental process was straightforward and the rates were reasonable, especially considering the prime location right on the beach. Plus you rent rash guards for free. The only reason I'm not giving a 5-star review is because the shop rents out damaged boards. Didn't realize this until I got out of the water and the board was waterlogged. Surprised I caught so many waves honestly. Fortunately, afterwards we rented out their premium boards which were well taken care of and a dream! Caveat is you need to fill out a form online and rent for a minimum 2 days for $30/day. Longer your rent, the cheaper the rental. Overall, I would definitely recommend this shop to anyone looking to rent a surfboard in Waikiki. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rates are reasonable, and the location can't be beat! Moku is such an amazing place! The staff are absolutely wonderful -- they make you feel like family! We booked three lessons: two adult lessons and a 7 year old. Our instructors, Brian and Kurt, did a fantastic job of teaching us and keeping all of us (especially the little one) safe! They were constantly watching the waters and made sure others kept our space clear even when it got crowded. Brian and Kurt were absolute pros -- very experienced and so down to earth! They really made us feel like family. Photos/video and drone footage are also available for an extra charge! We went with photos from the onsite photographer, Beach Boy Photography, and Kylie was fantastic and so sweet! Having the photo/video options onsite made it so easy to capture the great day. We were all so impressed with the instructors who took my grandkids out for private surf lessons. They helped the kids feel comfortable right away and they were catching waves within 5 minutes of being out on the water. I would trust Ricky and Jon again anytime with my grandkids. This is my go-to spot when it comes to board rentals/lessons. These guys are awesome and very accommodating. If you're a surfer, I highly recommend renting a premium board here. It's $30/day and they're in great shape! It's also extremely cost-efficient to rent on-the-spot here too. Fair warning, I bring my own leash/fin/nut. Last time out, the gf got a lesson (first-time surfer) and caught more waves than me. Brian, her coach, created a very encouraging environment with sound advice and the reasoning behind each move made. He also gave plenty of help in the line-up to everyone! It was great having that local-break knowledge, made it so much easier to get into the surf. I used to live here in Hawaii and didn't need to go rent a board from Moku. But I had to move back to the mainland, and when I was coming back, I knew Moku is the place. They are surfers and they know what's up. So, as I was coming back for two weeks surf trip, there were no other options for me other than Moku because they are the best. Brian and the entire crew over there are super rad, lots of aloha. If you're here or you're planning on visiting here and you need a board to rent, go with Moku because they've got several different styles or boards for rent... so if you want to get a great kick ass board or beater board to go paddle around, they got you covered and they will hook you up. I am hardly an advanced surfer, but I am most definitely a great intermediate. And the board options they had for my level were incredible. Brian help me choose the right board via txt and I was super happy when I landed and picked up my 9'6". I would give them 100 stars if I could. The communication and the Aloha was just great. I just had a surf lesson and it was my best experience ever. I got Ray as an instructor and he was very clear with instructions - and has a loud voice so I knew when to stand up. I could hear him over the sound of the surf, his voice encouraged me to look up and not at the water so I would not fall. I've have lessons in Costa Rica, Maui and Waikiki and this lesson got me standing on my board faster and longer. I think I also generally felt more confident with him because he's a little older than the other instructors. I still have a bit of fear about going into the surf but he was always right there after my ride to help. If you are a first timer, looking to improve your stance or booking a lesson for your kids, I highly recommend Ray as an instructor. I know I'm going to ask him next time. read more

$20 all day surfboard rentals a block away from the beach! You can't beat that price anywhere else in Waikiki. $5 per hour is a deal too. The whole process was so easy. I didn't have to bother bringing a credit card or ID for collateral, I just brought cash with me and signed the waiver after picking a board. Easy. Not every board is in great condition; but it's Waikiki - logger's paradise. Do you really need a brand new log for your rental? Not really. I tried an NSP single fin that was a little to bulky to turn in the water but then switched to a shorter thruster PU board that worked great. I caught a ton of waves at Canoes in 2 hour sessions. I even pushed my little brother in law into his first real wave at Queens on a Moku board. He was stoked. Pro tip: come early so you can pick from the better of the boards to select from. They also had a brand new longboard added to the inventory of rentals one of the days I rented. read more
