Came here for the Outrigger canoe trip. It was challenging to find someone who was willing to go out with our 3 year old. We called all over Oahu and it seemed as though most companies even though their websites would often claim "fun for all ages" would not allow a toddler on the canoe. ABS said on the phone that it would more than likely be okay but The Capitan would have the final say depending on weather and waves and such. We planned accordingly as the waves would be more advantageous later in the week. When we arrived The Capitan was willing and gave his okay. We had a blast. Rode in on 2 waves, the guys on the boat were welcoming and gave clear instructions. Hard work but a lot of fun. I highly recommend ABS! read more

Whoa they have really jacked up the prices. Instead of $50/day for 2 chairs and an umbrella, that's now $85. Yikes. It's still worth it, and I like that they now offer half day or by the hour prices. That's practical. But I had to downgrade the stars because this is really really pricey now. The staff is still on top of things mostly, but... I did notice that young hot women can get away with a free hour or more on a chair and but everyone else is chased off within 5 minutes. Y'all should probably work on consistently applying your rules. read more

I signed my son up for private surf lessons with James who was very patient and easy to work with. By then end of the 1st lesson my son was able to stand on the surfboard and ride a wave partially in. Overall, the lessons were great as was James, can't say enough about how likable and easy to work with that James was. read more

We stayed at the Moana Surfrider Hotel and right between the Moana and Outrigger hotel is Beach hut called Aloha Beach Services. Nice group of people. Family run. We rented beach chairs, umbrellas and surf boards. We got 3 surfing lessons from them! Excellent! They really take their time and instruct you. Give you confidence. Especially Kealii (surf instructor)! Excellent! JonJon also! By my 3rd lesson, I was able to catch waves by myself! Overall excellent service! My daughter and I wanted to learn to surf while visiting the island. We chose Aloha Beach Services because they were located nearby our hotel and we knew this was the right place for us after meeting our instructor, Uncle Lumpy. We spent the first 10 minutes on the beach going through some basic safety instructions before we were guided onto the ocean. Lumpy was attentive in making sure my daughter and I were safe while teaching us how to surf. Didn't take long before both my daughter and I were able to stand up and ride the waves. We kept at it for the next hour before the lesson ended. The 90 minute lesson seemed short when we signed up but felt that was the perfect amount of time before getting too tired. Please take this as a warning and skip this place!! I was interested in renting a surfboard and wanted to ask about the prices and hours for renting. It was as if I was bothering them or I was unwelcome with my questions. I asked two different employees who both never looked towards me and seemed totally unfriendly. Eventually I asked a third employee why everyone was being so rude. He then proceeded to get in my face and accused me of calling his employees "lazy". He put his hand on my shoulder at one point and tried to intimidate me. I was actually thinking he might get physically violent with me so I walked away. This all happened right on the beach in front of their rental hut. I am not sure if it was a bad day for the business, if i was an unwelcomed tourist or something else. I am still utterly shocked and I have never felt more confused, uncomfortable and threatened while visiting a business. I hope that the Aloha Beach Service realizes that customer service and just being downright helpful is a benefit for business and the community. A group of us had never tried surfing so we decided to show up at Aloha Beach services early in the morning and see if they could fit us in. The price of $50 per person per hour was a lot better than the other prices that we found online. Kaleo and James Worked together to teach our group of five. Our hotel was less than block from the beach and decided to go outrigger canoeing at the last minute with no reservations late afternoon. We were a party of 7 and wasn't sure we'd all fit into one canoe. ABS had the closest canoe and we all got on, plus two guides. What a fun wild and wet time we had. The guide allowed us to ride 2 additional waves, 4 overall as a bonus. I think because of all the attention we were getting from wooting and hollering so much, we became a paddling advertising billboard. They charged cash only, $25pp. We tried to negotiate the price but they didn't budge. The 'uncle' in charge there seemed a little grouchy as it was late in the afternoon, he looked ready to go home. But the canoe guide was cool and he showed us a super time, and allowed us to take plenty of pictures. Great memories indeed. read more

NEVER rent from these people. Walk the 100 yards on Waikiki to a different vendor, it will be worth it. It's all about service - I have been in sales my whole life, it doesn't matter what you sell, it's the service that makes people go back. Let's start with the renting of paddle boards for my family (3 total), he took my money not once looking up, pointed to where the PB were - I looked at him and asked "how do I know when my hour is up" - his priceless response "that's something you'll need to figure out". What? No help carrying boards, no one asked if we were familiar with PB, no help getting them out of the water. Yet, when my daughter was all done and trying to get her board out of the water, A DIFFERENT EMPLOYEE FROM A COMPETING vendor helped her out of the water. On a different day (maybe they would be nicer) They treated both my son and daughter (both over the age of 21) like trash. We had people in the water ask us about this vendor because they heard and saw similar situations. I say thanks for watching my stuff while I was in ocean. Nothing. People aren't looking for red carpet service but have some courtesy. Highly recommend KEALII for your next surfing lesson. I have never surfed and this was my first lesson. He was calm, relaxed, and knew how to teach effectively. Within a matter of minutes, I caught my first wave. You don't have to be a great swimmer or in great shape. Give these guys a try, ask for Kealii and you'll be glad. As a 11 year old child in 1968 the old man now but young man than of this family owned rented a board for $1 a hour the going rate . I came in three hours . Since I never had any more money they put me to work to pay for the rentals . I did that for a year . Until my mom said better buy a board it was cheaper . I have been coming back for years . I asked around and they told me the guys don't really show up that early and to give it some time. 20 minutes later a very rude guy showed up and basically told me they will not really be open for another hour and if I didn't like that I could take my business elsewhere, and I did. Walked up and asked how much surf lessons were. $50 per person in a group lesson of 4. We got Uncle Blue and Josh as our instructor. They were awesome! Uncle Blue has been doing this for 50 years. He was so kind. He even would give instruction to tourists who were struggling not taking lessons. He even loaned a woman his board because hers was too short for a first timer. She got up on her next try! Josh took time to work with my youngest one on one until he was literally doing the hula while surfing. I can't express how much fun we had and how cool and encouraging they were to me and my three kids (13, 10, and 7). We all got to ride a bunch of waves and they had another guy out there taking pictures on his GoPro (additional cost). The pictures were great, the instruction was awesome and the price was right. Spent a week in Waikiki over Christmas/New Year's - I cannot say enough about this lovely team. Professional, funny, laid-back, they made my family's vacation so special. We spent 90% of our time on the beach in front of The Moana. Every morning we showed up and Lumpy had carefully set up our umbrella and beach chairs. My mother loved her stand-up paddle boarding and surfing lessons and one of the highlights of my sister's trip was a ride in the outrigger canoe. Fritz, Shayne, Didi - every ABS employee we encountered was wonderful. The best part? They take photos and videos out on the waves FOR you, so you can take your memories home on disc. They go out of their way to make sure you are having fun, on and off the water. I took a private lesson with Fritz, and it was well worth it. Ignorant assholes is probably the best way I can sum up this company. Was sitting on the beach early morning. Guy came out. Dropped cones. Didn't say a word to us. 20 minutes later went in the water. Came out to see they placed the outrigger right where we were sitting. Also the entire boat was on top of my saddles. I politely went to the desk asked if it was there boat. They said yes. I said my sandals are under it. He asked if we sat down after they had placed cones. To which I said no. We we were there way before anyone else. I wouldn't even gives these guys a 1 star for starters. We vacation here in Hawaii several times a year. Reluctantly, we rented a board from here for our boys to surf. This isn't their first time surfing and have been doing it for years. While in the water, my teenage son was harassed, berated and threatened by one of the "beach boys" who does surf lessons. While my son was on a wave, an instructor than pushes his student out in front of my son causing a collision. I'm watching from the beach while recording this. The instructor then begins to berate my son...saying some very harsh and inappropriate things to him. I watched this whole incident and I can assure you, it wasn't my son's fault. The instructor had no right to ever talk to anyone's kid this way. I'll definitely be suggesting others to rent from...never again from these jerks! read more
