After posting my review, the business responded in a dismissive and unprofessional manner. Jessica, a representative, refused to take my concerns about harassment seriously, claiming it was just "he said, she said" and demanding evidence rather than properly investigating. Instead of prioritizing customer safety, she chose to defend Larry without question, despite my detailed account. Even more concerning, she repeated Larry's false claim that I was "retaliating" because he was frustrated during a lesson--essentially admitting he acted unprofessionally. A responsible business would take harassment allegations seriously, speak to witnesses, and investigate, rather than deflect and protect their own. Their response shows a complete disregard for customer safety. Jessica also dismissed my complaint by stating, 'we've never received a complaint like that before, in fact, most of our customers are very happy with Larry.' This response minimizes my experience and attempts to discredit my legitimate concerns based on a supposed history of satisfied customers. The fact that I'm the only one raising such an issue does not invalidate my experience--if anything, it highlights that this situation may have been overlooked or ignored. I've since come across multiple reviews of Roku Surf Shop, which Larry Rios is associated with, that describe very similar concerns to mine. While these reviews didn't mention names because the customers didn't catch the instructor's name, the descriptions match Larry's behavior. I also received messages from ladies on other platforms who commented that they experienced similar as mine from Larry Rios. It's evident that I'm not the only customer who has felt uncomfortable or disrespected. These repeated accounts speak to a pattern of behavior that the business should seriously address, rather than dismissing the concerns of individuals who speak up. Jessica then demanded that 'both of us' cooperate to resolve the issue, as if I were obligated to work with her like an employee or a criminal under investigation. She insisted that I provide more evidence, despite having already shared screenshots of Larry's uninvited video calls and the clear harassment I faced with a witness list. Her refusal to properly investigate or acknowledge the severity of the situation, and her inappropriate demands for cooperation, highlight a troubling lack of professionalism and accountability. I stand by my review as a warning to others about Larry Rio's harassment and unprofessional behaviors, as well as the lack of responsibility within this business. read more

I saw multiple comments on Reddit about how awesome Larry's surfing lessons are and decided to go ahead and book. His fees are a bit more than other surfing schools but WOW was it worth it. Larry gave me a thorough lesson on land to make sure I knew how to properly get up on the board. With his instructions, I was riding my first wave on my second try! Larry started me out on easy waves and slowly added on the challenge so that I always felt comfortable. He also kept me aware of risks like rocks and sea urchins and how to get off the board properly. After each try on a wave, Larry gave me detailed feedback (plant those feet! eyes forward!) so that I was really catching waves by the end of our time together. The 90 minute lesson was the perfect length, I got plenty of tries but my arms were pretty done paddling back out to sea by that point. It was a real workout! Larry would take a couple waves during our lesson while he was waiting for me to get back out for my next try; just watching him effortlessly swirl around on the little waves, you could tell you were in the presence of a guy with total mastery of the water. But Larry is not just a world-class surfer with decades of experience on the waves, he is an amazing teacher and just an all-around cool guy to hang out with. I tried teaching myself how to surf a few years ago, but struggled to catch waves on my own because I didn't know how to properly stand up on the board, position my body, or paddle fast enough, so I was a bit nervous going into my first lesson. As soon as we got in the water, Larry got me catching a wave on my first try! He knew how to perfectly read and time each wave, and despite the waves being relatively flat that day, he helped me catch enough speed to be able to consistently ride every single one. As we were waiting in between waves, he also taught me the importance of positioning my body up and down the board depending on the speed of the wave and patiently answered all of my questions. I was part of a group lesson with some friends (also new to surfing), and as I paddled back, I saw them catching nearly every wave with Larry's help. One of the highlights was watching a group of them ride on a party wave together towards the end of our session! ‍‍‍ Larry's laidback, funny, and patient nature, along with his years of pro surfing experience, makes him an excellent surf instructor, and I would recommend him to anyone in a heartbeat. Larry is, without a doubt, the best surfing instructor on Oahu! From the moment we started, he made sure everything was spot-on--he picked the perfect board for my height and gave me super clear tips on how to stand up right on the beach. Then, we got straight into the water, no time wasted! I couldn't believe it--I stood up and rode my very first wave, and pretty much every wave after that! Watching other schools nearby, I noticed their students were still struggling to stand while Larry had me riding waves every time. You can tell he really knows his stuff. He even gave other instructors some tips, which says a lot about how experienced and kind he is. Larry was so good at spotting my mistakes, helping me fix them, and keeping me out of my own head when I overthought things. I'll definitely book more lessons with him next time I'm in Hawaii--and I'm bringing my whole family along, too. He's just amazing! I discovered Larry's surf school when searching for a unique surfing experience this summer. I had one day during a work trip to Honolulu to pursue a beginner's lesson, and though I saw the positive reviews for the top hits in a Google search, I wanted to dig a bit deeper for a more personal feeling experience. Someone else recommended Larry in a forum, and Larry turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. He was super responsive when I reached out, and he truly set me up for a successful first day of surfing. He scouted all the best waves, set me up for them perfectly, and helped me make the most of the hour, at the end of which I had expended all of my energy riding nearly every wave. On top of it, the sea turtles greeted us at our spot! I couldn't recommend Larry enough. He was so kind and helpful, and has so much passion for surfing and for Hawai'i. Best teacher on island! I've been taking lessons with Larry for about 2.5 months now, and started as an absolute beginner (had only taken one lesson prior.) I am now getting on bigger waves, really learning how to read the ocean and how to position myself in the water, walking up and down the board to move with the wave, and turning to the left and right. He also has me on different boards, and we've sized down a couple times now (goal is shortboard.) Larry is a great teacher for any age, he's been surfing his entire life and knows the ocean like the back of his hand. He's also excellent with teaching kids, he absolutely lights up. Great for surfers at every level, he's an ex-pro and is a legend around town. He still absolutely rips and you can just feel his love and passion for the sport. I'm not stopping until I'm riding barrels on the North Shore!!! read more

I booked my first surfing lesson ever and Larry was an amazing teacher. He was extremely patient with me and guided me while still making sure safety came first. I booked one lesson thinking it was going to be my only one, but I had so much fun learning something new and had such a great time with him the first time so I booked two more lessons with him. Larry is an awesome instructor and is super genuine. He was encouraging when he saw I was struggling. I saw a rather negative review that was posted about a month ago and he does NOT seem like the person that would ever be discouraging to anybody. Heck, I booked lessons with him THREE times. Larry was super friendly and everyone seems to love him. He brings a great energy not just to the lessons, but also to ones around him. I highly recommend booking with Larry!! We are from San Diego so no stranger to surfing community! That being said Larry is exceptional, if we could we would move just so our daughter could do lessons with him regularly. She learned so much which she will take with her back to San Diego using all she learned. Even if you've never surfed before he's your guy he knows his stuff and will teach you right the first time around. On top of that he's just so positive and an all around great person. Larry with LB surf was such a knowledgeable and kind surf instructor showed our group lots of Aloha and we were all able to stand up on our boards! Surfing with LB is a no brainer. He will get you up on the board and standing in no time. He helped me pick out a board that best fit my body and skill level and goals. He's been surfing longer than I've been alive, so he's super knowledgeable about the sport and the waters. We had some honu surfing along us which made the experience even more memorable.
