I did 4 surfing lessons with 4 different instructors before learning with Mickey. All other 4 instructors pushed me when the wave came and just told me when to pop up. I basically don't need to do much. As a result, after 4 lessons, I still don't what I am doing. And I had my first lesson today with Mickey. He started with teaching us how to look at the wave, how to paddle (what speed, how many times, etc), and how to decide when to pop up. Every time after a surf, he analyzed my gestures and explained to me what I did right and wrong and how to correct it next time. I have learnt so many today and instantly booked two more lessons with Mickey in the upcoming week. We had the absolute pleasure of booking a Friday surfing experience with Mickey. We did two semi-private lessons (each one included a child's first surf experience). He was on time, super friendly, sent us videos before to help our kids feel comfortable to know what to expect, and we had the best time! Our daughter was feeling nervous though she's a great swimmer, so he let her surf on his board. She had the absolute best time! She did get up quite a few times but felt safe enough to do so! In addition he taught us a bit about Hawaiian culture, surf culture and life. My son is 14 and starts high school this year, so we took a little vacation to Hawaii to wrap up our summer and start high school off on the right foot. I thought it would Be fun to take surf lessons while in Hawaii. There are so many surf instructors and we were just so blessed to find the absolute best surf instructor on planet earth. Here's how it went down: Mickey was easy to contact and we were able to work out the details by phone and text. He told us to meet him at the Duke Statue on Waikiki Beach. There is only one Duke Statue on the beach so that was easy. My son and I paid $100 for a hour and half surf lesson. The lesson started out on the beach learning the basics of how to stand up on the surfboard from your belly. This is what every instructor does to start their lesson. However, once we got into the water, Mickey separated himself from every other instructor on the island. While the other instructors are out there in the water with you, they basically guide you with words on how to ride a wave. Mickey? Our surf instructor? Mickey sits on a board right next to you, keeps his foot in the board to keep It balanced for us beginners and when the perfect wave comes, he stays next to you and tells you the perfect time to stand up on the board. I mean talk about someone being there every step of the way? My son, Joseph got up first using this awesome teaching technique, and just a few moments later, he was able to use the confidence he gained to get up and ride the wave all by himself. So, what I'm saying is that my kid went from total non surfing novice to a kid riding his own waves in a span of about 15 minutes. And me? 50 year old chubby dad? I was also able to stand up on my board with Mickeys awesome and totally unique teaching method. No one else was out there teaching like this. My main point is that I'm sure there are many "good" surf instructors on Waikiki beach but somehow, someway, by the grace of the Almighty, I was introduced to the absolute best instructor out there, bar none. He took videos of our entire lesson from leaning the basics on the beach to the moment you stand up and everything in between, and I promise you, with his 100% hands on method of teaching, you and your friends or loved ones will stand up on that surfboard and feel like a surfer by the end of that lesson. A good surfer? That all depends on what you do after your lesson with Mickey and how much time you're willing to put in, but one thing is for sure, I just dropped my son off for his first day of high school and I'm sure that a good percentage of the confidence that he displays today was earned this past Saturday from 330 pm To 5 pm on Waikiki beach courtesy of the best surf instructor in Hawaii, Mickey the Man!! Our experience with Micah was so nice, we booked him twice --two days in a row. Seriously. Our 5 year old, who was his student, was surprised we could only give Micah 5 stars-- he truly wanted to drop six on Yelp. There are a ton of surfing schools and teachers, but Micah is a pro and master adaptor to different learning styles and levels. If you are an experience-seeker, maximize your time and check his availability today. He is super responsive and even had some post session lunch recommendations that we loved. Our son doesn't swim, yet. Nevertheless, he got to experience that incredible sensation of flow from catching waves. Truly epic. His lessons with Micah made him feel safe and amped to get in the water to get back to swim lessons. We're coming back for sure. In the meantime, we're letting all our NorCal friends (young and old) know about him. I learned and progressed more in 2 hrs with Micha/Mickey than with any other surf school I've ever been to, which includes several weekly classes in Southern California and a week-long surf camp on Costa Rica. Mickey really makes sure to meet you at your level and helps you actually build your knowledge and skill. By the end, I was finally able to catch a wave completely independent of an instructor - I spotted it, timed it, and caught it on my own!!! Bonus: he takes great video during the session, capturing me on the waves as well as a turtle that visited us mid-session. Our son asked to take surfing lessons late in our trip to hawaii. After looking up some places, we found Mickey's surf school. It was a busy week for Mickey but he was able to squeeze us in for a lesson at the last minute, which we are so thankful for! He sent us some videos to show our 4-yo before the lesson. Our son was nervous and felt iffy the day before. However, when we got to the location and he met Mickey, he got comfortable really quick. Mickey took his time to chat and get to know our son so he wouldn't be shy or have stranger danger. As soon as they were ready to head to the water, my son happily and excitedly followed Mickey. In Waikiki everyone I talk to seems to have a friend who is a surf instructor and I had been thinking about taking up surfing again but I was unsure due to my arthritis in left knee and right ankle and who would I take the lesson from? I had surfed many decades ago and saw this site and Micah had so many great reviews how could this many people be wrong. After a few weeks I finally had my lesson today. Micah is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable let alone one of the friendliest instructors you will ever meet. He is very patient, very helpful and if you're a beginner or have other mobility issues he figures the best way to get you to stand and for a moment gets you to feel like part of the surf community. I found that I need to work on my flexibility and technique but that will happen in time. Micah not only helps you get standing but he takes videos of you so you have proof even though if it's only for a few moments. Micah introduced me to some very nice people today and I can't wait to take my next lesson with him. Mickey was amazing! I can't say enough good things about him and his lessons but I'll do my best to explain why you shouldn't go anywhere else. Mickey was super patient and really made you understand the principles and concepts of surfing. We have taken multiple surf lessons and all of them just pushed you on the board. Mickey never touched your board and taught you how to get up on your own. We spent a decent amount of time on land where he explained waves and low tide and high tide. He then picked out our boards and explained where we needed to lay and explained the best position. Most lessons we've had just stick you on the board and tell you to move forward or back never explaining why. Mickey explained how crucial this point is and it helped us a lot. On the water, he was able to read the waves so well that we always got good waves before any other surfer was there. He would surf right next to you and give you feedback on what happened. The icing to the cake is that he gave you GoPro footage where he's riding beside you and also had a guy on the beach taking pictures of you so you get some great shots of yourself. TLDR; if you're trying to get a simple picture of you on board without much effort, then take your pic of any spot. BUT, if you're really trying to learn how to surf on your own and be able to board on your own without an instructor in the future, Mickey is the right choice! read more

Micah is fabulous and is the BEST for a child. My daughter is seven years old and she leaned 50% of surfing (Micah's words, not mine) in her first day. Before the class started, Micah sent me a video for her to practice in land, which saved 15 min in the sun. They went to the water right away. My daughter learned standing up on her own and she loves surfing when she came back. They found a turtle, nice surprise. When she came back, this is her "best day" ever. While waiting at the beach, I met a couple who also learned surfing from Micah and gave me incredible testimony about him. Surfing with Mickey was a highlight of our trip! A few caveats: we are a family from NJ, and will likely never surf again. We just wanted to try it, maybe try to stand a few times, and go home with some pictures and bragging rights. Micah delivered big time for us. Mickey is the best instructor! After a lot of research, I booked a 90 min surf lesson with Mickey for my group, 4 adults. He spent a half an hour on the beach patiently explaining the mechanics of surfing to us and answered all our questions. Come to find out he didn't even start start the clock on the 90 mins yet! One person in our group was able to stand up her first time! We were all able to get up on our boards during our lesson. There was a storm two days prior to our lesson so the waves were a bit choppier but he kept a eye on all four of us and made sure we were safe. Mickey is warm and friendly and genuinely wants to share his surfing knowledge with everyone. He was even giving tips to other surfers. After getting out of the ocean, he gave us more advice and answered more of our questions. We spent a total of 2.5 hours with him. I can't recommend Mickey enough! Micah was patient, explained the techniques so I could understand them, and helped me practice/ tailor them so they worked with my style. I've been out with a lot of surf coaches and they've all been great with very few exceptions but Mickey clicks at a different level.
