BUYER BEWARE- cut yardage fabrics Visited to purchase fabric. 90" wide (double wide) muslin. It needed to be measured. After a few minutes of waiting, (having pushed the help button) we had to find go find someone to measure/cut. It became very apparent the person we found was poorly trained as she was very neatly folding the fabric on top of itself then measured along the yardstick, she then counts how many layers she had. Just under 6 yards. EXCEPT - the fabric was double Wide so there were multiple layers folded on the bolt (extra wide fabric), she had counted EACH layer of fabric .... It was actually just under 3 yards. I tried explaining she was measuring/counting incorrectly, and got - stare of confusion--- so had to request the "request the manager." When the manager arrived, she made no eye contact, no greeting, grabbed the fabric and started measuring. While doing this, she proceeded to "explain" that "THIS is how WE measure, we use a yardstick"--- seriously? Then she mumbled "we need to work on more training". Not sure if she meant me or her poorly trained staff. Final yardage 2 yards + 35". This manager can use a refresher in customer service, as well as staff training. A simple hello could have very easily diffused a situation--- and you should absolutely NEVER assume that the customer doesn't understand what you are doing! Speaking to an adult like a schoolchild will never end well. I wanted to get a Latch Hook item in the store (saw them online), however I could not find any, so I just did some browsing instead. I like that they have a whole yarn and embroidery section - maybe I should transition to that craft instead. I went to the Aspen Hill Michael's carrying several art items that need to be framed. As described below, I was SO offended by the pricing and policies that I left without placing any framing orders! Amongst the policies, published discounts are ONLY applicable IF you buy a custom frame . BTW, I am not certain, but I think the framing operation within at least this Michael's store is an outside company. IF SO, they need to charge enough for their own profit and to pay Michael's! The first item I wanted framed is a fairly small print (maybe 4 x 8 inches. My wife and I bought this artwork several years ago. At that time, I also bought a simple frame for it from Michael's. The only issue keeping me from inserting the artwork into the frame is that the mat had windows precut for 3 small photos (see attached image). I needed and asked that the framing people use that window mat and cut it the correct size for a single artwork. I was flatly told that they "do not use" customer materials. I HAD to buy a mat from them! By the time they calculated the cost of the mat and placing the artwork in MY frame, the price was over $40 ... OUTRAGEOUS! I DECLINED. Years ago, I did my own mat cutting, mounting and framing. I still own the equipment and will take care of this myself! Of course, not everyone has a mat cutter. The second piece that I presented for custom matting, mounting and framing was a 6" x 8" Shutterfly family photo sent by my daughter in a frame that I did not like for the purpose (it is thick and black - not suitable for a joyous family image in my opinion - but very suitable for a black and white photo). It required something like an 11" x 14" frame. See attached image. As my wife and I considered various mat boards and frame designs, the price was skyrocketing. In the end, having discarded a "linen" mat board because of the expense, the proposed custom matting, mounting and framing came to around $300! Again, SO OUTRAGEOUS that I declined. My wife and I bought an off the shelf frame. Not quite what I had in mind, but suitable for a joyous family image. With whatever discount* Michael's was offering that day, the price was around $30. We went home ... I removed the image from the heavy black frame along with its precut mat and placed it in the new frame. Took me less than 15 minutes and that long only because I wanted to get it perfect! I added a hanging wire and voila! Michael's does a fairly common business practice that I personally find heinous. Their off the shelf prices are very high. But the Michael's chain offers various discounts that change frequently. In order to benefit from these discounts, a customer MUST check their website virtually daily! BTW, the discount CHANGES virtually daily. I saved 20% off the shelf price of the frame. The next day the discount was 30% but I did not feel like driving back to get the additional 10% savings. BOTTOM LINE - unless you do not care about your money, do NOT use the custom framing in the Aspen Hill Michael's. I have no idea of the pricing at other Michael's or at any other custom framing store. It is possible that their outrageous prices are in line with others. If so, that does NOT ameliorate my outrage. In a strange way, they did me a favor. At almost 76, I will be relearning how to cut mats! read more

Just got back from this store after picking up an order for $300+ custom framing, as well as attempting to return three relatively inexpensive frames. While we did have receipts for custom framing and returned the inexpensive frames in pristine shape, we were confronted with impressive indifference by everyone but Cheri, the cheerful cashier, who tried to do everything she could to soften the blatant rudeness of her coworkers, Aaron and Jackie. The store itself is dismal and looks like a 99-cent store that is about to be demolished. Selection is limited and downright sad. Customers were remarkably kind and helpful towards one another while waiting for assistance, but except for the lovely Cheri, the staff was not. It was as if they were angry about having to work here! I was going to come back to buy more art supplies next week -- but given this uncomfortable experience, I think I'll pass. I come in to get spray adhesive and some poster boards. The spray I found wasn't exactly what I was looking for so I ask an associate where there may be more, if any? He did take the initiative to ask over the ear piece he had ,he said no, that what I had in my hand was all they had. Ok. I continued walking around the store and came up on a whole isle that has adhesives. I don't like being lied to. If you don't know then you don't know. Good googly eyes! Walking into a craft store is always a bit of a nutty experience. It takes me back to the Honors Band days when I used to own plenty of sculpting clay, bead organizers, yarns and a glue guns. Nothing made a party hotter in middle school than a kick ass arts and crafts project: pet rocks, tie dye, decorative straw hats, floral arrangements, scrap booking...pick your poison! When I walked into Michael's today, I was overwhelmed by all the decorative distractions, seasonal and otherwise. I picked up about 10 things that I wanted to buy for no particular reason other than novelty. Luckily, impulsive shopper I am not. I stayed pretty focus, other than a minor detour to pick up a bag of cinnamon-y pine cones. Don't ask. I asked one woman who worked there if she could point me in the direction of some decorative boxes. She was pretty helpful, although vague in instruction and options. The lady at the check-out wasn't the best with service either. She mumbled something to me about 40% off something or other next time I came back without looking up once and throwing everything into one big bag. Lots of items to get crafty with here, but this location lacked a bit of the customer service I've experienced at other Michael's locations. They sell everything that you need to complete and enjoy craft projects. Also they do custom framing and sell what you need for decorative upgrades and to make small repairs around the house including the glue, vinyl sheets, accessories to hang your framed craft projects & pictures, cool seasonal decorations, craft tech tools and supplies, more types of markers & paints than I knew existed & so much more. The selection of seasonal decorations is almost overwhelming! The manager & employees here are so friendly & helpful. They greet you when you enter and wish a nice day as you leave. If you join their customer loyalty program you can earn discounts for your future purchases (the announcements said 3 percent of what you spend I think). I went in for a custom frame. Elizabeth at Michael's in Aspen Hill has an excellent sense of colors for matting prints and styles for framing. She started by suggesting a combination and we played with colors and textures from there. She knowledgeable and kind, and given that I came in 15 minutes before the frame counter closed, quite patient. The store is clean and bright. Whatever your craft need be, I'm sure Michaels has it. Prices seem reasonable, but it is not that often I get valuable artwork framed. They regularly offer half-off framing. Make sure you wait until they offer half-off your entire order ( incl. mat, glass, etc. ), not just the frame. My total frame order came to around $200 and that was half-off! So, I'm not sure if $200 would of been the regular price somewhere else. Also, I was a bit nervous because they only offer up to a $300 replacement cost if something bad happens to your art. My vintage piece was valued well over $1,000. Well, it turned out great, thank goodness! The only question I have for them is: What happen to all your Mrs. Grossman stickers? I promised my second graders alligator stickers, and with well over 500 stickers on the rack, not one alligator pack to be had. I hope they like basketballs! read more

I have been coming to this Michael's for years, but this will be the last time at least until the pandemic is over. All but one of the male employees were not wearing their masks over their noses. The woman who rang me up was thankfully wearing her mask properly. The entire reason I came early in the morning was to try and avoid crowds and be as safe as possible. This kind of non-compliance with basic public health and safety guidelines on the part of employees is simply not acceptable while people are dying in overflowing hospitals. read more

Yesterday and friend and I drove an hour each to participate in a craft offering by the store at the designated day and time as advertised. Even after confirming we still were disappointed to hear by the sales associate that no class would be conducted. Additionally two other ladies showed up for the event. The manager never came to express any acknowledgment of the inconvenience for them not scheduling the proper staff. I'm working on a project and needed some poster display supplies (I know, I know, while the rest of the world has moved on to PowerPoint and I'm doing tri-folds.) So off we went to Michaels to get things that I needed for my poster. They had brought in their fall decorations, lots of pumpkins and Halloween stuff, and school supplies. We started looking for tri-folds. We wandered the aisles and eventually bumped into a man who asked if we had seen popsicle sticks anywhere. No, but have you seen tri-folds? He thought he had and pointed us in the right direction. Why were customers asking each other for help? Because there seemed to be one employee only and she was behind the check-out register. We found a few more things I needed and finally were able to get the employee's attention to ask where push-pins might be. She pointed us over to a far wall. No push-pins. So we asked again. She made a quick call for help and then directed us to a different area. At this location there were "pens" but not "pins". We had walked around the store so many times and I was getting tired so we gave up. I was thinking 2-1/2 stars but the check-out lady was so sweet and apologetic that I gave them the extra 1/2 star. Lots of merchandise and some unexpected things besides art and hobby supplies. I did an impulse buy of a pretty "pearl" bracelet. One, I do not get puh. Two, I do not currently have any 'feminine' hobbies. Every time, I come to Michaels, my neck is a turret, constantly swiveling looking for my next great project: knitting, scrap booking, beading, painting, etc.? What can I learn to become great at in my ample free time? Because you know, we all got plenty of time to spare... if and only if we were to reallocate our dicking off time into something productive. I also like to come in here to see the new crops of artsy girls. I have always told myself that there can really only be one of three ways I can get a girlfriend 1- My friend's girlfriend introduces me to one of her friends (note: none of my friends can sustain a girlfriend...) 2- I board an ill-fated airplane that gets deserted on an island and for some reason, only me and another girl survive the wreckage 3- I listen to Bob Dole and get a 'feminine hobby.' After working on the hobby for nearly a year, I manage to start a conversation with another customer who is shopping for supplies and we bond over our shared interest. We then proceed sharing each other's art work and practice together. We even do a few art pieces together. Through our collective efforts and symbiotic motivation, we eventually get so good that people commission our art pieces. Now on this particular Michaels outing, I wonder what is a good hobby that will best present the opportunity in me meeting someone... and which hobby is most likely to attract people who are good matches for me. Beading-- not into tweens Jewelry-- not particularly interested in jewelry Candle Making-- not popular enough to generate an ample sample size Soap Making-- too niche Scrapbooking--- Scrapbooking is an endangered species. Social media is killing scrapbooking. Painting-- painting can be a good choice. I can see painting being a bit pricey and I am not one who hangs poster and paintings so I do not know its practicality. People do need to constantly buy supplies so they should always be people who need materials. I can see myself definitely attracted to girls who are into painting. Painting also attract a lot of males so there could be stiff competition for me. Drawing-- this could be good. It does not take any space to draw. A good set of drawing pencils and markers will suffice as materials which can lead to a problem that girls do not need to frequent Michaels for supplies. Is this even a feminine hobby? Knitting/Crocheting-- it would be cool to be able to knit and crochet mittens and hats so there's a practicality aspect to this hobby. I am afraid that most of the women who are into knitting are married and grey so there is not a great pool of available girls for me. I think knitting and crocheting, more so than the other hobbies are dominated by the most females. Therefore the available girls who are interested in knitting would view a male knitter as a rare unicorn. I am definitely going to choose one of the latter three hobbies: painting, drawing, or knitting. Eh, I don't know. What do you all think? My review is for the framing department. I needed help for my Graduation pics and my college diploma. I was in need of some great advice since I never cared to frame anything. Romeo was super helpful! He suggested certain colors and frames, and even asked what the color of my wall was. He was patient with me and my mother (who does not speak English so everything required translation). He explained which material and matting would be better in the long run (who knew framing was so complicated?) He even hooked us up when me and my mom nearly had a heart attack after he told us the price of the frame (who knew framing was so expensive?!) I really cannot say enough great things about the way I was treated at the framing department! I actually LOVE this location and the management and employees here have been super nice to me over the years. I have never received bad service! Also recently went in to make a purchase and received the most excellent customer service from new employee? named Emily. She was very helpful, extended service with a smile and made sure to introduce herself with her name before I stepped out the door adding to come back and see her. I was so impressed with her service that I did come back to see her ( She wasnt working that day :-( ) but I did make another purchase thanks to her. The only negative I have to say about this location is that alot of thier isles are empty and alot of items I am looking for are not in this personal store. Also some items for example in the decor area have been cracked or broken upon purchasing. I recently purchased a lightbulb that was inside a box and came home to find it completely broken on the inside in pieces when I opened box. Also purchased a wooden rack for wall that when I went home I noticed it had a huge crack in one corner of it but still being sold to me at regular price which was pretty high given the item. Their prices on decor some other over priced items could be better even with coupon but that has nothing to do with this particular store. Also after making a purchase, Ive noticed I do not receive the 40% off regular priced items coupon as much anymore. After two consecutive purchases in the same week of over $50 I received one that only lasted 2 days before expiration and had no time to use it. One last thing....everytime I buy something here Im asked for my email or phone number to get points for items purchased (or at least have a history) I recently logged into my account after my last 3 recent purcahses to see my order history and it was empty saying I had no orders. I told the cashier and she told me if I have the receipts to call the 800 number...I only could find one of the 3 receipts...the issue is that, even though they look up my account at purchase time, the items are not being saved or shown in my Michaels account. read more

That being said I found my own way around the store and found what I was looking for by just going through each isle. I ordered a custom frame job. After spending some time discussing it with an employee in the frame shop, we agreed on a color scheme for the matting that matched what we were framing. Two weeks later, we pick it up, only to find that they used a different color altogether than what we chose for one of the layers, one that doesn't at all match what we were framing, and the matting is really poorly done and uneven. To make things worse, nobody answers the phone at this store. Like, at all. Ever. For all I know they tossed their phone in a lake. I've called 20 times and nobody ever answers. They've done really poor work and then ghosted us when we tried to address it. read more

The staff must have been trained to ignore customers or run and hide when they see one. They rarely have enough cashiers working. I went to the custom framing department to have a piece of needlework framed, as they had a sale for 75% off. The framing department has a sign up advertising various packages and price by size. Requesting Package B, a reasonable deal for double mats for around $150, I was quickly informed that those packages don't actually exist. The guy proceeded to pull out the absolutely most expensive mats and frames they had and again refused to show me Package B, claiming that there are so many additional charges that it's meaningless anyway. Seriously? Why have packages if you can't ever buy one? When he totaled up everything he recommended came to $425, but with the special sale it would only be $169. Now I see why they have sales every week--who would pay $425? Crazy. Finally settled on a mat and frame that I like for a fair price. They have a 2 week turnaround and gave me an order slip, for pickup on a particular day. I showed up that day, and my job was not ready. They had 40 orders for that day, and about 20 or so ahead of me. Again, seriously? It turns out that they have to order all the mats & frames, which is what takes 2 weeks. The "pickup" date is really the day the get your frame and start assembling things. Several hours later it's finally ready. Then I notice that there are speckles all over the glass. No problem, I use a soft cloth and cleaner. Turns out the speckles are on the inside. They didn't clean the glass properly. So now it has to go back, because it's done in such a way that I can't disassemble it at home. read more

My experience with this Michaels has been stellar. Glenis (manager, I think), Tania (checkout and customer service), and Romeo (framing--and another person in framing whose name I unfortunately did not get) have all helped me recently. They were friendly and knowledgeable. They, and others, were able to help me find what I needed, advise me on different products, and make sure that my shopping experience was smooth--including helping with the cart when I had several enormous frames. (Earlier in the year, Ketty helped me in framing and also offered excellent customer service; I've heard that she recently moved to another store.) Be aware that if there's no one in framing, there is a red button placed in a holder in the middle of the framing counter. It says to ring the bell for service, and it works. It's easy to overlook the button, though once you see it, it seems obvious. The stock at the store is well organized and I've always found what I went in for (and things I did not mean to buy, LOL, which came in handy later.) On the one occasion where they were out of a product, they were able to tell me when the truck shipment carrying that product would come in. I also want to mention that when I call this Silver Spring store, I am always directed to the department I ask for, and someone takes my call quickly. This stands in sharp contrast to the Rockville store, where I was put on hold for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes...and, the first times, told that I'd just have to wait. Since I have always found the Silver Spring staff to be helpful and pleasant, and it's closer to home anyway, I've stopped going to the Rockville store. Silver Spring's location just feels more efficient--and, at the same time, more relaxed! One caveat, about Michael's frames and those at any big craft/framing store (Aaron Brothers, Hobby Lobby)--look carefully before you buy them. Some are in fine shape, but sometimes they have dings and dents and places where the paint comes off. This is not a commentary on this store location; it's true at all similar shops. You can find very nice, serviceable frames here, at affordable prices, but if you want perfect frames, you have to look carefully or spring for custom framing. That said: I have had custom framing done at this location, and everything went very well. Thumbs up! read more

I'm not sure what we can do with them, but they might come in handy. Mojo: (hold up a basket) Got some spatulas and cake knives. And there's plenty of glass vases and jars. We can use some of the marbles and rocks to set up a trap : / Slash: Sweet mother of...WTH is that?! Mojo: Diaphragm compressor. Slash: ??? Mojo: You got a light? Slash: (hands it to Mojo) Mojo: (screws in a container of neon green liquid and presses a metal latch attached to the tip. Neon green liquid sprays out.) I call this a zombie torch. Watch this. Slash: Hmmm, so that paint stuff is flammable. I'll be right back. 1 minute later... Slash returns with duck tape, spray paint cans, and dried flowers. He ducktapes some dried flowers to a spray paint can. Mojo: What is that for? Slash: You like torches. I like grenades. Axl: Ahhhhhh! (runs to the back of the store screaming) Mojo: Holy smokes, they're here. 5 hours later...everyone is still alive. Marbles got poured out by the doors and windows then paint was poured over the marbles making them extra slippery. Everyone climbed atop the shelves with ammo ready. With store made grenades, torches, and knives and needles for back up we were able to hold off the undead until zombie control got there. When the area was cleaned up of zombies and the store reopened six months later patrons found their usual favorites in stock. Do not get anything frame here! I got a piece of art framed at this location to give as a present, they gave me a date when the framing would be done, so I called the day before the date to make sure it would be finish by the next day, someone on the phone told me it would be done before 5pm and they would call me when it was ready, 5pm comes, still no call from the store, it's right before I'm meeting up with the person who is receiving the gift before she goes out of the country for the holiday, so I go to the store to pick up my framed art piece, at the framing station there is no one there, so I patiently wait for some one to come out (I could hear people on the back having personal conversations) ten minutes later some one comes out to tell me the frame is not ready, they haven't even started to frame it yet and that I would receive a call the next day when it was ready! This Micheals good if you just need to stock up on your basic brushes, adhesives, paint etc. The store was on the small side, messy, and really low on inventory. The workers were pretty friendly, so that was nice. However, It was pretty frustrating when they told me they didn't carry half of the things i drove out there for. Guess I have to trek further outside of DC for my crafting goods. read more

They have your basic crafts items. Scrapbooking selection is not that great. This location is very old. They have to do some remodeling. Kind of disappointed. Lack in Customer Service. Every time I have gone to this store I have had the same check out cashier. She is not personable at all. Wouldn't hurt to smile or talk to the customers. read more
