I found Michigan Fine Yarns when looking for a place to supplement the soon to be closed Joann's. Someone recommended this on an online knitting forum and I took a risk. They have a very easy to navigate website with a ton of offerings in any color, thickness, weight, and material you could image. The only downside to being an online customer is that we cannot feel the yarn. However, I received a call once when purchasing the pink yarn where they inquired as to what I was making because there were two lots with different dyes used so there was a slight color difference. I was taken aback by how thorough their customer service was and how thoughtful that interaction was! I've attached photos of some projects that I have completed (I'm new to knitting so any mistakes are truly my own and not due to the yarn). I will continue to purchase from Michigan Fine Yarns as they have a range of yarns that can fit any budget. I like to work with the 100% Peruvian wool from Cascade yarns the most and my local yarn stores don't have them in the quantity that I need. I cannot wait until life brings me to Ann Arbor and I can visit this store in person! I might feel like I've died and gone to Heaven.

They were very accommodating and had the yarn I needed, and so much more that I would have liked to buy. They offer loads of patterns and have quite a few beautiful pieces on display. This shop is a little reminiscent of Mary's Yarns in Unionville, which - sadly - closed a few years ago. I will have to shop here as often as I can to support them and my hobby. This past Thursday I was having a rough day, but decided an outing might help. It took me all day but I gathered my strength and headed to the yarn shop in Waterloo. As always I had Erie with me and when I got to the shop there was a note in the window saying there is a dog in the shop. When I headed in the lady saw my dog and took hers to the back saying it gets along with people but not with other dogs. The other dog was barking and whining but there was really nothing I could do about that so we continued on. Maybe the lady thought I was taking too long or I wasn't going to buy anything and was just trying to get out of the rain, I don't know. But she came around the corner and said, "your dog is upsetting my dog and I'm busy and have things to do, so can you tie your dog up outside please?" I explained that she is my service dog and she has to stay with me, at which point she said, "well then you will have to leave!" I could have argued with her. I could've told her it was like asking someone to leave because their wheelchair was taking up too much space or telling someone with oxygen that they couldn't come in because there were lit candles. My dog is my medical equipment just like a wheelchair or oxygen. But I didn't. I just left. It had taken all of my energy and strength to get there I didn't have any left to argue. By the time I made it across the street to a little mall I was shaking and sobbing uncontrollably. I hadn't done anything wrong and neither had my dog but she told us to leave! I want to be like everyone else and do the same things in the same manner but I can't. Situations like these make a bad day worse and show the ignorance of others. As always we will continue to be positive and carry on without letting this bother us. For other handlers, please know we understand and experience the same. The video was fun and made this establishment look like a warm & welcoming space. I appreciated learning more of the owners' origin story as Natalie interviewed them. All of that to say, I was more than motivated to check the place out. When I walked in, I was not disappointed. Located in Kerrytown, Spun has a local charm to it. The store itself is a great size where it's large enough for patrons to explore without feeling too crowded yet still able to maintain a cozy hipster vibe making it a great reflection of Ann Arbor. The sheep artwork (designed and drawn by one of the owners) is creative branding and contributes to the memorable experience. The yarn selection is massive and easy to navigate because of how well organized it is based on yarn weight. The amount of yarn may be overwhelming to some because there is a lot to look at - not a bad thing, only something to take into consideration. I thought it was quite extensive which left me speechless! Some may find it helpful to have a shopping list going in or know ahead of time what your timeframe is because you will want to spend time exploring each aisle. I had researched ahead of time on their website though found that when I looked at the yarn in person, some of the color hues I was expecting were different in-store compared to the photo listing online. I appreciated that there were quite a few local dyers, artisans, and spinners spotlighted - from the yarn to the notions/yarn bowls offered. Staff was welcoming - Annri introduced herself, provided a basket, and made herself available if I had questions. It was very friendly of her! The selection of yarn ranged in price where many would be able to find something in their budget. I felt some items were on the pricier side but that's considering the college town factor as well as that I only recently began transitioning to independent dyers, natural fibers & hand-spun. I did appreciate that there were several economy priced yarns offered which seemed like more options compared to other LYS' I've visited but still considerably less in proportion to Spun's independent dyer options. I walked away with stitch markers, two sets of double pointed needles, and four skeins of yarn! What a great haul! The staff was also kind enough to wind it for me free of charge which I greatly appreciated. I only had to wait in line and return for my skeins after 30 minutes. I could have easily spent all day at Spun!! It sets the standard for LYS and I'm excited for my next visit!!
