The workers are very kind and helpful. I was quickly assisted in finding the yarn and tools I needed for a project. I was convinced to give metal knitting needles a try (I've only used wood so far) and I've been loving it! I got all my questions asked and more :) Being a knitting store, the price of items are a bit spendy, but that's also because the quality is great. The store sources beautiful yarns which comes at a cost, but you know what you're getting is great. They are also able to purchase print your patterns if they are on Ravelry (maybe other sites as well). This past Thursday I was having a rough day, but decided an outing might help. It took me all day but I gathered my strength and headed to the yarn shop in Waterloo. As always I had Erie with me and when I got to the shop there was a note in the window saying there is a dog in the shop. When I headed in the lady saw my dog and took hers to the back saying it gets along with people but not with other dogs. The other dog was barking and whining but there was really nothing I could do about that so we continued on. Maybe the lady thought I was taking too long or I wasn't going to buy anything and was just trying to get out of the rain, I don't know. But she came around the corner and said, "your dog is upsetting my dog and I'm busy and have things to do, so can you tie your dog up outside please?" I explained that she is my service dog and she has to stay with me, at which point she said, "well then you will have to leave!" I could have argued with her. I could've told her it was like asking someone to leave because their wheelchair was taking up too much space or telling someone with oxygen that they couldn't come in because there were lit candles. My dog is my medical equipment just like a wheelchair or oxygen. But I didn't. I just left. It had taken all of my energy and strength to get there I didn't have any left to argue. By the time I made it across the street to a little mall I was shaking and sobbing uncontrollably. I hadn't done anything wrong and neither had my dog but she told us to leave! I want to be like everyone else and do the same things in the same manner but I can't. Situations like these make a bad day worse and show the ignorance of others. As always we will continue to be positive and carry on without letting this bother us. For other handlers, please know we understand and experience the same. The fabric quality certainly isn't what it used to be. For the prices they charge and low-quality / discontinued fabric, this is far from an upscale fabric / upholstery atelier. The customer service is worse than the product and presentation. Upon walking in, no one greeted me, despite the fact that two employees were chatting at the central desk near the door. I found my way to the back area with the upholstery fabric. I wandered around a bit looking at the myriad sample decks. Because there was no information or pricing on anything, I returned and waited for the woman at the central desk to finish her chit-chat before acknowledging me. She apologized for being short-staffed (so probably not a good time to stand around and chat.) Upon arriving back in the upholstery fabric area, I began explaining my project and said I was seeking fabric in the $30-40/yard range. She abruptly cut me off and said sharply, "Don't have it." I explained I was able to find quite a few options online and know they exist in this range elsewhere and she snapped, "Then go online." I continued the conversation forward by describing the overall dimensions of the cushion seating bench and she again cut me off with a sharp-toned "How many yards?" as if I didn't know how to plan a cushion (or add and multiply). I bluntly replied, "Don't be short with me. I've been sewing for 30 years." I never understand why so-called "experts" (sales clerks) feel the need to be defensive and condescending rather than patient and helpful. There are a million questions she SHOULD have asked before this last one: desired quality, use, color, pattern, touch, durability, etc. Once we discussed details a bit more, she said, "All we have in the $30 range is cotton." If you had something in that range, why didn't you say so in the first place . . . other than trying to steer me into a higher price? When she showed me the swatches, I asked for the specific pricing as nothing was labeled. She replied with, "Can you imagine if we had to price everything individually?" At the end of my rope with her, I simply stated, "Yeah, you would actually have to work." I then turned and walked out. Too bad she couldn't have been attentive, pleasant, and helpful. Had she treated me with respect and courtesy, she would have made nice sale and new customer. Instead, she earned the store yet another 1-star rating on Yelp.
