The fabric quality certainly isn't what it used to be. Pattern matching was impossible with a plaid as it was severely off grain, when I complained I was told that is how woven fabrics are now a days. I'd accept that for $5 a yard fabric but not for $25 a yard fabric. I guess I need to make a trip to London or NYC to get decent fabric. read more

How this business has survived is beyond me. The warehouse is a complete dump and looks like a midtown garment-district building circa 1980. For the prices they charge and low-quality / discontinued fabric, this is far from an upscale fabric / upholstery atelier. The customer service is worse than the product and presentation. Upon walking in, no one greeted me, despite the fact that two employees were chatting at the central desk near the door. I found my way to the back area with the upholstery fabric. I wandered around a bit looking at the myriad sample decks. Because there was no information or pricing on anything, I returned and waited for the woman at the central desk to finish her chit-chat before acknowledging me. She apologized for being short-staffed (so probably not a good time to stand around and chat.) Upon arriving back in the upholstery fabric area, I began explaining my project and said I was seeking fabric in the $30-40/yard range. She abruptly cut me off and said sharply, "Don't have it." I explained I was able to find quite a few options online and know they exist in this range elsewhere and she snapped, "Then go online." I continued the conversation forward by describing the overall dimensions of the cushion seating bench and she again cut me off with a sharp-toned "How many yards?" as if I didn't know how to plan a cushion (or add and multiply). I bluntly replied, "Don't be short with me. I've been sewing for 30 years." I never understand why so-called "experts" (sales clerks) feel the need to be defensive and condescending rather than patient and helpful. There are a million questions she SHOULD have asked before this last one: desired quality, use, color, pattern, touch, durability, etc. Once we discussed details a bit more, she said, "All we have in the $30 range is cotton." If you had something in that range, why didn't you say so in the first place . . . other than trying to steer me into a higher price? When she showed me the swatches, I asked for the specific pricing as nothing was labeled. She replied with, "Can you imagine if we had to price everything individually?" At the end of my rope with her, I simply stated, "Yeah, you would actually have to work." I then turned and walked out. Too bad she couldn't have been attentive, pleasant, and helpful. Had she treated me with respect and courtesy, she would have made nice sale and new customer. Instead, she earned the store yet another 1-star rating on Yelp. read more

On the one hand they have some nice wool fabric, but on the other, their prices are ridiculous and the attitude of the woman in the back section of the store guaranteed that I would never go back. She was very haughty and treated me like a low life I did not want to spend $87 USD a yard on cotton velvet that was far too heavy for garments. (I am a high end finisher of needlepoint pillows, etc.) She was extremely annoyed that I told her that I can buy the best cotton velvet in the world for $10 a metre from Ralston's in the UK. If you don't care if you are paying 10X the retail FMV in order to act as if you are trendy or rich, this is the place for you. read more

I really thought I was going to talk in here and be robbed by old biddies holding me at needlepoint. I have no idea, but I always thought this place would be ridiculously expensive. More than Jo-Ann fabrics. I guess I thought this because I figured quality = price gauging! If I didn't want polyester everything, I'd pay for it -- and it'd be a hefty price. I came here for suiting material. I knew what I wanted -- 100% wool and nothing else would satisfy me. I was expecting a little dippy section for suiting material. And I was expecting to pay $30-40 a yard (note: I didn't say I was WILLING to pay that much). I have never been so happy to be so dead wrong! They had an amazing wool and suiting section! Everything from super retro hounds-tooth to very standard pin stripe. When I was there, everything wool was 20% off. EVERYTHING. The prices ranged from $13-28/yard with $22 being average. However, they had one special section where all suiting fabric there was just $10 a yard. My jaw dropped. Beautiful silver herringbone 100% wool fabric for $10 a yard?! That's gotta be criminal. The ladies who work there are exceptionally knowledgeable and friendly. On check out I asked if they knew any seamstresses in the area that would do a custom made vintage-looking suit for me. To my surprise, they already have a list! And the lady went through and highlighted my "best bets". In order to get on said list, you have to show the store samples of your work. So it's quality checked! There's a list of dressmakers about 50 people long and a list of home decorating experts about 30 people long. NOTE: Referral list is ONLY available in store. It is interesting that most of the other poor ratings of Haberman Fabrics is for the same issue; poor customer service. They either don't read customer feedback or don't care. If you expect to be greeted with a "hello", forget it. If you are walking round and round not finding what you are looking for, do not expect anyone to ask if you need some help. The sales staff are content to do other things. I thought I would make the extra effort to support our small business, but they don't seem to care if you do not don't. This is the second time I've tried to shop at the Clawson location. First, no one even acknowledges you've entered the store. 2 sales people at register 1 customer being cashed out. They did everything they could not to make eye contact with me. I walked around looking at fabric thinking maybe it's a problem that requires the both of them.. no. They were just chit chatting. I come back by the register no one says hello or ask if I need help. There is only one other customer in the entire store. This is the second time this has happened. I don't know if these are the owners or their employees, but if this is my store I'd correct this rudeness. With so many options to purchase online, I'd want my employees to at the very least acknowledge my customers. There won't be a third time, why would I spend my money here? Came right home, went on Amazon and ordered my 10yds of silk fabric from a seller recommended by a friend, GREAT DEAL, Free delivery. I don't know if it's changed owners or not, but it's sad. Just in case the owner wants to speak to those employees, unless they were the owners, date is 12/30/20 time 4:15-4:40pm. Ya don't know whatcha got until it's gone... I seriously used to pop into Haberman's just for a textile fix. I've been going there since college, and when they moved to their expanded current location I just about peed myself with happiness. They carry high-quality fabrics of all sorts - brides who are thinking about DIY would D-I-E coming here, and their Marimekko and other home dec fabric offerings are insane - but don't forget the trim. Who knew I needed a bear-shaped button? Or olive drab satin ribbon? I have tried sewing clothing before and suck horrifically at it, but I'm a whiz with a pillow cover or Roman shades... Haberman's has far and away the BEST selection of specialty fabrics in lower Michigan. They carry an amazing selection of high quality silks and embellished tulle, as well as really nice upholstery and home-decorating stuff. They have independent-maker patterns and nice wools and suitings. There's an entire section of bridal fabrics, including the Vera Wang bridal silks. My best friend found a seamstress through Haberman's to have her wedding dress custom-made. Their trims and ribbons section is fantastic, and they have a lot of really unique things you can't find other places. The prices at Haberman's are totally fair for the quality of the fabrics they carry, but if you're looking for cheap cotton quilting fabric, this isn't the place to go. Their selection is much more geared toward apparel and home decor sewing. It's a beautiful place to browse-- I drive over an hour from Ann Arbor to shop here. I can't recommend it enough. read more

Everyone with dreams of being one of the mighty Christians (Dior, Siriano, Louboutin) or creating their own atelier ought to be dancing into Haberman Fabrics at the first opportunity. I'm obsessed with texture, colour, and patterns as much as the next girl. Unfortunately, coming from a family of brilliant sewers and seamstresses is a little like being a shoemaker's wife. My skill with a sewing machine ends around aprons, pillow cases, and simpler costumes. Nevertheless, Haberman's is a like a darned garden for the sartorially inclined. Touch. All the various bolts yearn to be pinched, stroked, and sampled by your fingertips. I've found the loveliest light crepes and heavy velvets, thick canvas broadcloths and everything in between. Upholstery and clothing fabrics are given equal care, and unlike the samey bolts at the likes of Jo-Ann, here you can locate unique options and yards. I rather feel overwhelmed navigating through. Try not to come with a generic idea like 'pretty skirt' or 'curtains,' because the selection is broad enough to be totally overwhelming, wondrous, and frightening. I feel like a pirate among the treasure chests of notions that give ideas I know my skills aren't up to handling. Specialty fabrics seem to be their high water point, especially when it comes to formal attire or special household uses. Chances are, if you need something very specific, it's on their racks. And watch for sales! Notions, odds and ends, last of bolts, and clear outs offer fabulous finds. I don't get in here often, mostly due to outstanding projects that beg to be finished first. I give Haberman's five stars for selection. Their collection of fabrics, trims and notions is absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, the service gets zero stars. While the sales staff are pleasant and knowledgeable, you can never find someone when you need one to have fabric cut. I've walked all around the store to find a salesperson, waited 15" or more until one was finished with another customer, asked to have one paged and never got help, etc. This means you have to allow for a one-hour visit just to pick up a few simple items. Habermans would be heaven for sewists if it weren't for this big problem. The average of five stars and zero stars is 2.5 stars, however I'd give Habermans a re-review of five stars if they can get the customer service problem corrected. read more

While this store shares its name and even some of the staff from the original Haberman's in Royal Oak, it's not the same. They have a lot of samples but very little you can walk out the door with. And what they do have to buy off the bolt, is no better quality from Joanne's or Michaels. And if you express your dismay to the staff, they get extremely rude and defensive. I really wanted this store to succeed, but after my lackluster experience with the product and even worse experience with the staff, this place could go out of business and most people wouldn't even notice except for the 10 employees, six of whom are in the back area chit chatting about whatever on chairs and can't get up to help customers. Next time I'm looking for fabric, I will try Joanne's or Michaels, or Calico corners. At least I know what to expect when I'm walking into these places. read more

Really great selection of fabrics with decent prices. They have a huge selection of custom order fabrics so if you can't find what you want then you'll be sure to find it in one of the 100 ' s of special order books. The only thing is you have to find someone to write up your order even if you don't buy fabric. I bought buttons today and waited in a line 5 people deep only to find out they can't scan them, they have to hand write each piece with the price on a piece of paper first. So I had to get out of line wait for someone to write up my 10 sets of buttons then back in line behind 5 more people just to pay. read more

Love Habermans! It's a bit of a hike for me coming from the Ann Arbor area but they have the best fashion fabrics and are always so helpful. I have been a Haberman customer since I was a wee one. I can remember being three years old and being wildly fascinated by the HUGE button wall they had at their old location (the new button area does not compare-it is much smaller and no longer a wall). I got the lace for my wedding veil here, the fabric for many of my pillows, and of course a bazillion buttons (I used to collect them). I have a few reasons for my 3 star review. The customer service has gone down in recent years. Most staffers are friendly, but it is often darn hard to find anyone to help me when I need it. The last several times I've been in, I haven't bought a thing. For me, I rarely go into a fabric store without buying at least *some* fabric. It just doesn't really happen. I always see something I like and dream up what I want to make with it. The problem with this at Haberman as of late is they are not really coming into the 21st century. I can walk into any JoAnn I want and find a plethora of in demand/in style/trendy fabrics. Chevron, Moroccan inspired, etc. I can't do that at Haberman. The trendiest fabric they have there is Marimekko, and last time I was there (9 months ago), it was on its way out of the store entirely. I'd much rather shop at Haberman, but they just aren't keeping the stock fresh. Visually, not much has changed in the fabric department in the last 5 years (and possibly longer). You may not think that a fabric store has to stay on trend, but it is important. I think they could bring in a bigger and younger clientele if they had even 5 trendy fabrics. Maybe some day they'll come into the 21st century and I'll be pleasantly surprised, but for now it's disappointing to not find anything even sort of trendy. I am going there again this afternoon and I'm eager to see what they have available, but I fear not much will have changed in 9 months and I'll walk away empty handed. Royal Oak's Haberman Fabrics is probably the best fabric store in Metro Detroit, if not Michigan. Located on Washington Ave and Lincoln, by the Oakland Community College campus, this store is a wet dream for any seamstress. If you're looking for a fabric Metro Detroit's Haber man probably has it. The store carries everything from imported fabrics to bridal fabrics to domestic and designer fabrics. Don't know how to piece the fantastic textiles you just purchased together? Well, Haberman also offers sewing classes. Check the website for the schedules. In addition, to the extensive, but well organized selection of fabrics, Haberman's also has a great selection of buttons and other sewing adornments. The staff is knowledgeable and always willing to assist you whether it be a basic or complex question. Wow! It's not often that a store impresses me from the outside, before I even walk in. The window displays were really well done and nice to look at while walking in from the parking lot. It gets even better when you go inside. Everything is very well-organized and set up nicely. We were offered help almost immediately, but not in a pushy way. We were pleased to find a pattern here that the Joann Fabrics we just came from didn't have in stock. In addition to fabrics, they also have a wide selection of accessories. We were kind of in a rush and I feel like we barely scratched the surface, so I'll definitely be returning. read more

Almost everything you would ever want for a sewing project can be found here. We purchased some nice foam (how often do you say that?) and fabric for a chair we are reupholstering. Staff are knowledgeable and friendly. Prices are mostly comparable to other chain stores, however Haberman stocks more speciality fabrics. Great place to get ideas for new projects. read more

Did not know what to expect from this store. Was unable to find what I was looking for on the east side--for a small project. Probably would not have considered them--if they were in their previous location. The Clawson location is sooooo easy to get to and has plenty of parking. The selection of upholstery fabric is AMAZING. The customer service is GREAT. Specialty fabric orders arrive in a quick time frame to keep your project moving along. WONDERFUL sized samples to take home. I applaud them for remaining open 7 days a week in the pandemic. I will definitely use them for my next project! So sorry some reviews refer to poor service--but everyone gets a turn and the fact that the ladies can multi task and serve many guests at once, should be applauded-not disregarded! read more

I took a soft goods design course this summer and was soo happy to have found Haberman Fabrics. Haberman has a huge selection of high quality fabrics and materials. It is not cheap by any means.....I paid $35 a yard for horse hair canvas. But the quality is very worth the price. And in the end I have an excellent piece that is worthy of my industrial design portfolio. The staff is knowledgeable and always nice. There is a big selection of reduced priced fabric as well. And I actually walked out with enough fabric to construct my design at a price that is comparable to JoAnn's....with the exception of the canvas backing. I'd recommend it to anyone who is interested in any kind of sewing or upholstering. read more

Haberman's is a dream come true! I don't even sew (well) and I could spend hours in there pouring over their huge selection of fabrics, tassels, sequins and buttons. There's a little children's nook for the kids to play in while you browse around and there's a huge selection of patterns for pretty much anything to choose from. I took a class there recently and the instructor was incredibly patient and helpful. The staff is knowledgeable, helpful and they get excited about what you're trying to make. It can be expensive, but I think that has to do with the quality of the merchandise that they're selling. read more

I don't know why but for the few years I lived in Ferndale, I thought that Haberman's was interior design focused. A few weeks ago, sick of the big box fabric stores in the area, I decided to stop by and see what they had..... I about cried. The fabric selection is beautiful, nicely laid out and the prices are reasonable. I've only made a couple purchases there so far and have had minimal interaction w/ the staff but the few I have had contact w/ have been helpful and friendly and I haven't had to wait for assistance. This is the fabric store to go to if you want quality and up-to-date fabrics in this area. read more

LOVE THIS PLACE!!!! This is the go-to fabric store for hard to find fabrics: wool knits, coutil, silk of all kinds, luscious upholstery fabrics, trims as far as the eye can see!!!! Haberman is a little pricey, but you're definitely getting what you pay for. The only thing I've ever found there that is totally overpriced are hooked corset busks, which a clerk even told me were overpriced, since they buy them full price online and then mark them up. They also have a pretty decent selection of unusual patterns, and offer a wide variety of classes. I'm a seriously picky costume designer, and won't settle for anything short of ideal. The best thing to do is go in with a specific project in mind, because you'll end up dropping several months worth of rent on the best fabrics you've ever found :) read more
