I signed up for a class in January and I was really excited about it until they canceled with no explanation. I rescheduled for a class in April and the Thursday before I had to cancel. Their policy is you have to cancel a week before and class was on a Tuesday. So because I called 5 days beforehand the would not reschedule me. I asked the woman on the phone to confirm that they would be keeping my money without any services provided and she agreed. I think cancelling five days before is reasonable especially considering they had cancelled the original date. I own a business in a related field and I was really looking forward to taking several classes, now I will find something else in the area. read more

Of course most people that visit a fabric store have a purpose of some sort. I went to Haberman with my seamstress Aunt to look for fabric for a dress I was designing. We decided to go all the way to Royal Oak, as opposed to stores in Detroit, because Haberman is a nifty little shop. They have tons of fabric to choose from, maybe too much to hold in the building. I always found myself bumping into racks because it was so many of them! The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable, if you wanted to come by yourself and browse. I'm not sure about "standard" prices for fabrics, but I would definitely recommend Haberman as a fabric destination. read more

project runway had its claws in me and i made my way to haberman fabrics after buying a cheap sewing machine. first of all this store is beautiful inside. if there is anything not inside here related to making clothing i would be surprised. they have a huge selection of patterns and often have sales on them. the cloth is just breathtaking. the immensity of their thread and buttons is overwhelming in a very good way. the selection is amazing and they have a pretty big area for cast-offs (there is a correct word for this but i am unsure of it). they lost one star because i took classes here. the class was really quite useless and the woman teaching it was like suzy-homemaker from hell. she never even took the time to teach us how to use the machines. i found myself trying to thread my machine for three days and she refused to help. on the good side i heard she was fired after our class! love, juston read more

I have shopped at Habermans for years and years and have always had helpful women. Yesterday when I walked in the store, 4 saleswomen were standing at the counter and within seconds said "hello, can I help you". Yes but give me a minute to get in the door. 10 or so minutes after I was looking for fabric, a salesperson came over and asked if she could help. I told her what I was looking for and she said ok and then left. Thanks but no thanks. Shortly after another salesperson came over and asked if she could help. Once again I told her what I was looking for and she suggested I go with one of the fabrics I was looking at and then she walked away. Whatever happened with offering suggestions or seeing if there was another fabric that matched. Neither salesperson was interested in really helping, just going through the motions. When I asked to get a sample, one of the ladies was just standing at the counter flipping through a magazine. I was really put off by the lack of interest with this group of women. Either take pride and do your job right or go home. They do have the best selection around, but they need to step up their help. read more

I was actually talked out of my purchases today and that was after two other salespeople had passed the buck, (me), to another for help. Very disappointed, with the lack of help, and being talked out of lovely fabric I wanted to buy. I'm thinking a salesperson wanted it for herself. Not feeling like going back, though I had a much better experience there about three months ago. Wondering why it's gone downhill there so fast. read more

I had my first trip to Haberman Fabrics. All i hear are great things, i am not sure who these people are, but the store is terrible. Yes, it looks nice, but I am not buying property. The help is the worst. No one wants to help me. They were helping other people, but maybe I didn't have the right purse. Seemed that if you looked the part, they will help.. If you don't, they don't want to be bothered. I had the money to spend, but the prices are outrageous! What are they thinking? It is cheaper to buy a new sofa then get something from this store. Never, ever again would I step foot in here. They want top dollar for everything, which is fine, but make me feel good about spending my money there, they didn't care at all. There has to be other places to go besides here and JoAnns...Bye Habermans... you will never see me again or my money and would advise people on the same. read more

Since the small but well-edited Fabric Gallery closed a couple years ago, Haberman Fabrics is currently the *only* place I know of to purchase quality fabric in Michigan. I have to trek out to Royal Oak from East Lansing at least monthly. As a fashion student, my dorm room is absolutely littered with Haberman's shopping bags. You're not going to find a whole lot of cutting edge textiles here, but they're certainly well stocked on the classics. Wools and silks galore, particularly excellent for those interested in making formal wear, bridal and suits. They usually have a small selection of "designer" fabrics as well, there were some Missoni knits in stock the last time I stopped by. In addition to these, they have a huge home decor fabric section, as well as functional stuff like high quality interfacings, buckram and battings. It's also fun to see what weird wild card fabrics Haberman stocks. Chunky iridescent metallic knits? Striped pink superlong faux fur? Curiously stretchy micropleated tricot, reminiscent of Miyake's Pleats Please? If you didn't find or know what you were looking for, you certainly won't leave empty-handed. The prices are generally very fair considering the quality of the materials. They're also fairly well stocked on small tools, notions and trims. They offer classes, though I haven't taken any. They also have a cute little children's play nook to occupy customers' children while they browse. It is true that their customer service is rather spotty; though everyone I've met here is very friendly and extremely knowledgeable, it always takes a little patience and searching to find a staff member who's not otherwise engaged, and that can be frustrating. If you stand around at a cutting table, someone will usually come and help you within a couple of minutes. In their defense, I think they're actually hiring right now, so at least they're looking. read more

Great store, no real "complaints"--HOWEVER, despite the great finds, I discovered a dirty little secret about their often ecclectic and unique home dec fabrics--they are selling discontinued materials at retail markup. Not cool. Have you ever wondered why all their fancy brocades, chenilles, and velvets are marked "No reorder"? Because they no longer exist. I took the item number off several fabrics I loved, typed in the info on several manufacturer sites from Robert Allen, Barrow/Merrimac, and Kravet--and discovered they were ALL discontinued. Many of them I located on outlet sites which were sellling them in bulk at a fraction of the price Haberman was charging! My rule is never to buy something until I see if it can be obtained cheaper! One such fabric was from Barrow and I was able to get it at $19.95/yd rather than the $45 charged by Haberman's. So, just look around first. Needless to say, if you literally have cash to burn, by all means, buy it here. They sell lots of intersting things but most times I tend to just browse. read more
