This is the 5th one on…read morethe Island by my count and the one currently closest to me, so that I no longer have to drive out to Massapequa, Commack or Bay Shore to pick up hobby supplies. Forget about the one out in Riverhead. My current hobbies are building scale plastic model and flying model rockets. These are in one aisle that I make a beeline for when I come to the store. The selection is not great, but adequate. The plastic models go on 40% off sales a few times a year and the model rockets & supplies are usually discounted 30% off MSRP. I wait for the annual clearance sale, when they knock off as much as 75% from the already discounted prices. There are also items in the clearance area with prices slashed as much as 90%. Those are usually junky, returned merchandise or damaged goods, but if you have the time to browse through there, you might come up with some gems on occasion.

We found ourselves making a wrong turn into the parking lot (into Whole Foods) but the parking lots are not connected so had to come out and make the correct turn. The paint section, for instance, was all but non-existent, with some paint being dried up and their containers shrunk and shriveled from age and exposure to the solvents within them. The owner/salesman was horribly disrespectful to him. They had an oil-free air compressor there, but it looked like it had been sitting on the shelf since the late 80s (and still full price!) So, unless they plan on surviving on their train section, I'm not sure what their game plan is. But based on the way they treated my son, that's not really my concern. Would not recommend.

I came…read morehere because I met a participant in their charitable cause the prior day and wanted to support the effort. This store is about one mile from my house and I had never been here before, even though they have been here over 20 years. This was their annual charitable event. I was greeted the door by Storm Troopers and Darth Vader. It was obvious that they have the right formula here. The small shop is PACKED with comic books and memorabilia. This is clearly the home base for comic book collectors and aficionados. I was here to see one of the artists drawing and support their charitable cause. I always find it amazing to watch an artist go from pen-paint-pencil to paper. Amazing talent. I had the opportunity to meet a cmic book author. We had an amazing conversation that was capped off by determining we went to elementary school together in Queens. It's always a small world. The owner is a wonderful man who is dedicated to his passion and charity work. I am looking forward to next years show and will look to possibly partner with them in my own charitable events. I build and paint 40K, and although HQ Hobbies doesn't carry 40k minis I go there for all of my supplies. Huge selection of paints, brushes, varnishes, setting solutions, etc. Literally anything you could need regardless of what you're building or painting. The owner is himself a model builder and is knowledgeable, friendly, and easy to chat with. Overall this place is easy to recommend. When you're driving by, go slow because it's easy to miss the store. It's on one side of a strip mall and given the nearby tree coverage it's easy to miss.
