    Over-priced wreathes!
    Siobhan D.

Yikes. The prices at Michaels are bonkers now!! I stopped in just now hoping to pick up Halloween decorations or even just simple crafts to make decorations for my front porch, and the prices are out of this world! $200 for a Halloween wreath? Who pays $200 for that?! There was a 50% sale going on for some of the Halloween decor but even at half-price, everything is still wildly overpriced. When did this happen? I remember buying stuff at Michaels last year for Halloween and it was reasonably priced. Staff was nice though. Mariah at check out was friendly. Place was clean and well-stocked. But I only ended up buying $10 worth of glitter and glue.

The service was average. They had everything I was looking for in that visit, and I got 40% off (sale).

Rudest employees. If you ask them questions they respond with the worst attitude and do not help. Act as if they don't take you seriously.

They have a few nice ones at very reasonable prices. I picked up a Kenmore machine from the 80s that works like a charm. Got the machine and tons of supplies for under 200. And considering they've cleaned and oiled it, it will probably last another 30 years. Amazing store. Michael is the best. This is my fourth machine from them and my first ever used machine.

This place has been my ABSOLUTE saving grace this week. Monday evening around 5 pm or so, (of…read morecourse while working on a last-minute project for this weekend) I started getting the dreaded thread-nests. After minimal inspection, I found that my bobbin case was damaged and needed replacing. Now I know it's smart to have extra on-hand, but I'm on the "using only fabrics from my existing stash" budget at the moment, so I was SOL until I could order one- or so I thought. I remembered seeing a storefront labeled "Singer Factory Distributor" on the route to a favorite nearby sushi spot- having given it very little thought, I'd assumed from the name that they were a B2B business. I am SO glad I was wrong! Jamie was super friendly, and helped me get the part I needed quickly and back to my sewing machine before an incoming storm hit! I had an opportunity to check out their offerings a couple of days later, when I was having issues with some stripped screw-heads that were keeping me out of my machine. There wasn't a tech available at the time (it was close to closing), and it looked like I was going to have to check it in overnight, which wasn't in my budget. Nancy offered me some ideas for solutions I could try at home, and even made a call or so to get a second opinion while I perused the wide selection of thread, machine care-and-repair tools, and signs sharing news of sewing and embroidery classes. Minutes later, David appeared with the exact tool to help me access my machine, quickly got the screws out, and even set the tension on the bobbin case for me! Nancy plugged in my machine, made sure it was running smoothly, gave me some helpful recommendations, and sent me on my way. I am SO thankful for this place and this staff, this project would not have happened without you!

Last night, I went to the annual holiday open house at the Higgins Glass Studio in Riverside. This…read moremorning, it occurred to me that I should let the Yelp community know about this gem. If you are not familiar with their amazing work, where have you been for the past 60 years!? Higgins fused glass creations take the form of mobiles, drop-out vases, hinged boxes, rondelays (interconnecting circles or squares that will form a bigger wall of glass), plates, plaques and jewelry. With jewel-like colors and whimsical designs, Higgins fused glass has cast a spell on many a collector. In fact, some pieces of vintage Higgins glass can sell for upwards of $10,000! And, their work is featured in many prominent museums throughout the world. Originally founded in 1948 by Michael and Francis Higgins-their first studio was located on Wells Street in Chicago; they moved the studio to beautiful Riverside in 1966. Michael and Francis had the foresight to train Louise and Jonathan Wimmer (mother and son) in the technique of glass fusing, and they have both became fine artisans in their own right. They took over the business in 2004 to carry on the Higgins' glass-making tradition and to start a few traditions of their own. I absolutely fell in love with the beautiful new lighting sconce that Jonathan designed for this year's holiday sale (http://www.higginsglass.com/index.php?m=21). If you are looking for the perfect holiday gift, or better yet, a gift for yourself, you really should check out the Higgins Glass Studio. Their website is www.higginsglass.com. Tell Louise and Jonathan that Scott sent you! ;-) PS: There are also two well-written books on the subject written by Donald-Brian Johnson and Leslie Pina---Higgins Adventures in Glass and Higgins Poetry in Glass.
