I love Barnes & Noble. It seems the negative comments are directed at the Starbucks vs the actual store. They did have the specific children's book I was looking for, However, the customer service person was on the phone for an incredibly long time. I don't mind that it was taking so long ~ but maybe acknowledge that you realize I am standing there or ask the person on the phone to hold on while you verbally acknowledge my presence. I haven't been inside a Barnes & Nobles in years. I saw Barnes & Noble is offering a featured book of the Month deal for $5.00 upstairs at their cafe. You must make a coffee or bakery purchase any order to get this deal. This location in Oakbrook offers a wide selection of books, magazines, games, music, and gifts, you name it. A cafe that serves coffee, tea, bakery items and snacks. This bookstore is spacious. I like that you can pick out a book and find a quiet place to read. Very organized and easy to browse around and locate your favorite topic sections. There are so many book titles throughout the store. A nice place to come and pick out a good book or grab a magazine and sit back and enjoy the quiet and chill atmosphere. If you have any questions there are plenty of workers walking around willing to help. Even though it was busy and alot of people walking around. The atmosphere was still calm and peaceful. Huge store that is usually week organized. Very busy during holiday season and they had glitches with their system but we managed. They should have multiple registers throughout the store for checkout opportunity during this holiday season as the lines were extremely long. On a regular day I love the browsing opportunity. Layout of the store changes but that is to be expected. The Starbucks inside is normally a great read and sip moment. Also, great knowledgeable staff. read more

I love books so you can probably tell I like Barnes and noble. The place is very spacious and has countless Y/A books. It was almost too much because I wanted them all. They had good value and had 5 dollar book sections. The staff was also nice and even though there was a long line the staff rang me up very quickly. The only real complaint I have about this store is the fact that it is pretty loud for a book store but for how large it is there is not much you can do about it. Personally I think this is a top 3 bookstore in Oakbrook mall or possibly the best. I can't wait to come back again because this bookstore is just so great. read more

It is no secret that I pove B&N. This location particularly! It is spacious, with Coffee Shop inside. Lots of different books:) what do you need more?! Every one around here are very nice. Ready to help in a second and doing their best. BN is often my go to place to find some presents for my dearest ones. And for me:) I love the fact that I can pileup a ton of book and just sit and relax and do my research to choose the right one. From history to travel magazines, fashion books Nd art book, from crafting to cooking they have it all. Very cute department of diy is on the first floor and it is very impressive with ideas. This location sprawls across two floors and has everything you're expecting (books, music etc.) as well as a big section of toys and collectibles (blind boxes, funkopop, etc.) I got friendly service from someone near this area (name escapes me but he had a voice-over-artist type voice). They have a huge area of graphic novels and manga too (though I ultimately found the nonfiction graphic novel I was looking for not with the other GNs but in the travel section!) Excellent service from both the Bolingbrook and Oakbrook stores! I tried to order on line for Xmas and probably because of the Christmas rush, wasn't able to. So I went to Bolingbrook and they had only one copy of the book in stock and I needed 3. The staff person was very helpful and went out of his way to locate additional copies for me and even called the Oakbrook store to be certain the inventory was accurate snd to place a will call order for me so I could complete my shopping!! I like this place, it's pretty spacious 2 floors. It's attached to the Oak Brook Shopping mall. I sometimes come here to chill and read a magazine or two if I'm done shopping and need a break. Or if I found a good magazine, then I'll purchase it. I like that they have a Starbucks in here as well. There are times, that I needed a quite place to do work so I would go to the 2nd floor have a Starbucks drink and work away.... It's also a good place to kill some time if you have dinner plans later that evening. read more

I would like to start off by saying I love love love book stores. I enjoy visiting them, browsing, shopping, lingering, etc. However what I am sick of is their yo-yo prices. Why is it if I look a book up online to see if it's at my store and it says it costs $8.50, why do I have to pay $12.00+ in the store? If they want to compete with online retailers then do it! Don't tell me I can pick a book up at your store and have to pay more to drive 3 miles and pick it up rather then have you mail it to me 3+ days later. That is in itself cost prohibitive. Send the store another book on the next delivery truck (that is scheduled) and offer the book for the same cost YOU list online. This is a very deceiving act. This practice is going to put you out of business. It is not a secret that you can walk up and down the aisles of your store and order every book off amazon for less. But Amazon does NOT have a brick and mortar store - not yet... This is a VERY deceiving practice and everyone who reads this should be posting a similar review and encouraging your friends to do the same for other stores. read more

B&N is one of my favorite spots to discover new novels to read, they always have new arrivals so there's always more to choose from. It's also a perfect place to work on homework or have a study date.There's also a Starbucks inside for all of my fellow coffee lovers! A brick and mortar bookstore! They seem to be getting more and more rare these days. I make an effort to park by this Barnes & Noble location every time I shop at the Oak Brook Mall, because you can walk through the store to get into the mall proper. Even if I'm not looking for a particular book, the path through the store often brings a few to my attention. This B&N is a clean, easy to navigate, and LARGE store with two floors. Upstairs also offers a Starbucks location inside the store, with plenty of seating. The lower floor (ground level) mostly holds magazines, new releases, media, and stationery/gifts, while the bulk of the books, toys, and games are all upstairs. One of my favorite things about this store is the sheer amount of comfy seating for just relaxing and perusing your material. There is even a large fireplace downstairs surrounded by plush armchairs that you sink right into. I love coming here to kill time and rest my feet after doing too much mall shopping! read more

The location is great because it's along the border of the outdoor mall, meaning you don't have to navigate through other stores to get to it. The inside has two floors and is very clean. I was trying to pick up a reserved book and found out that it was behind the checkout counter instead of the Customer Service counter. The checkout counter is located in the corner immediately to your left upon entering from the parking lot side. I completely missed this when I walked in and went straight to the middle, where the Customer Service counter was located. They had a huge "Customer Service" sign behind that counter, but I didn't see any signs in the checkout area. Overall, I'd recommend going to this store though. read more

I really enjoyed studying here!! They have enough seating and even chairs in random areas so you don't have to absolutely sit with everyone else. The food was fresh, staff was around but not overly zealous about picking up books and magazines that people were clearly reading/using. I found what I needed at the Oakbrook Barnes & Noble. I needed a 2013 calendar. The price was normal. Selection was okay. The store was clean and well lit. The downside, is that I went into a bookstore and I found only what I needed. Like, there was nothing else remotely interesting. No impulse book buys. I like books and bookstores but this book store was uninviting and unexciting. No need to browse. So not a bad experience, but not a fun one either. I love to read. I used to go to Borders all the time when it was still open but this is my second favorite. The only thing I dont like is there prices. I like looking at the graphic novels and teen section. Every section has a good variety and if you cant find something they have little computers in a couple places. They have the biggest selection of magazines that I know of. Theres also two floors. I love how there are chairs and couches everywhere and theres a study section on the upper floor. Theres also a Starbucks with some real food options and some more seating and small tables. I just love coming here to walk and look around. It gives me something to do. read more

This place is PACKED! I'm not sure if it's cause it's Saturday but there are a LOT of people here so keep that in mind. Especially children. So be prepared for children screaming and running around you - even outside of the children's section. It's not the worst experience, but it can be bothersome when you're trying to concentrate. This place has a ton of space though! It's two floors and there are a lot of tables to sit and read or study. I don't know if there are many plugs, but that's something I look forward to finding out. The staff was nice and very helpful and the spiritual section has a LOT of books. I wasn't expecting so many options, so that's definitely nice. Parking is in the mall, so it's pretty full but it didn't take me long to find a spot. The parking lot itself is a big tight though so pay attention when pulling in and out. There is a reason the age of bookstores is coming to an end, and it isn't simply the invention of the e-reader that has caused this phenomenon. It's the horrible customer service you receive when you go into this store. Both sales associates that tried to help me find a particular book this afternoon did so with disdain dripping from their faces as if they'd rather do anything except help me. Then I fell victim to the horrible bait and switch that this company uses to lure its victims into the stores. Online prices. The online price for the book I wanted to buy was $12 less than the in-store price. And they refuse to price match with THEIR OWN WEBSITE. I walked out without my book. At the inflated prices, they can keep it. Awful, awful. From now on I am exclusive to Amazon and Kindle. read more

Oh, Barnes & Noble, how do I review you? You are the last bookstore chain in America, and the very last of the large bookstores within 50 miles of my house. You offer a service more rare than stained glass or leather working. I normally base my reviews by comparing market peers, but you have none left. You are better than Krochs & Brentano's, the ubiquitous Chicago-are bookstore chain I grew up with (and was happy to see go under). You are not better than Borders, with its bigger selection and better cafe atmosphere and unfortunately crummier business model (and I was sorry to see go under). Now you are only better than nothing. The magazine rack is big. Every periodical I could ever want to browse is within reach. And "within reach" is why we still need book stores. On the Internet, I can only seek out knowledge with specific intent. But at the Barnes & Noble magazine rack I can browse and preview and perhaps purchase. The book offerings at this B&N seem abundant at first. But after a few dozen visits to this reading outpost in Oak Brook, it's hard not to notice that most of the retail space in this store is just open air. Makes for a pleasing atmosphere, but also for fewer books to choose from than you might expect. Sad to say I have almost never found the book I was looking for when I walked in. That's not your fault, Barnes & Noble. Amazon (can I say their name out loud?) has ruined me for you. They sell all the books you do -- and many more -- for $1-$5 cheaper. I feel so bad for saying this, for even considering this in a review. You're doing the best you can, Barnes & Noble. Let's be honest, Barnes & Noble. You are here because there is nowhere else left. And because your business model was somehow better than Borders. Because all of us still need book stores. My wife and I visit this Barnes & Noble whenever we are in Oakbrook Center, and we usually walk out with one or two small purchases. Out of sympathy or necessity? I'll never be sure. read more

I'm comparing this location to Joliet, downtown Naperville, Bloomingdale and Plainfield. HOLY MAGAZINES! I didn't get farther than here, as I was only browsing until the rest of the mall opened. But they had MixMag in stock (most locations don't), and more than one bench to browse. Overall, their magazine selection is better than other locations. read more

Was once a place you could come here and find a table to study with ample amounts of outlets. Now the one area where they had big tables is gone. I get it, barnes wasn't built to be a place to come to study, but really..... I love the fact that bookstores have become the new libraries. I find it super-humorous that people come to a place like Barnes and Noble, grab a stack of books and/or magazines to read with no intention of buying them, curl up in a comfy chair and go to town for hours on end. Maybe Barnes & Noble could remedy this by not making themselves so darn welcoming! I met a friend here before we were heading off to the 2013 Yelp Elite Kickoff party at Pinstripes, just on the other side of the mall. We rendezvoused by the huge magazine section (the seriously have every magazine worth reading all in one area...it's mind-blowing) and then proceeded to the 2nd floor Starbucks to grab a drink. Did we have any intention of even giving the written word a passing glance? Nope, not tonight. I think if I had entertained the thought of looking around for something to take home, I would have gotten sucked into the wonderful world of books until closing time, thus missing our party. SIDE NOTE: BN is really good for having pretty much any book that I've ever come looking for (new books, of course. They don't actually have first editions, but then again, they're not that sort of business). What's great about BN in general is that they are able to order in books that they might not have on the shelf...the possibilities are nearly limitless. Don't believe me? Try it for yourself! So anyways, you should be warned that the Starbucks cafes within Barnes & Noble don't actually take Starbucks gift cards, a major downer, but they DO give you a BN member discount off your cafe order, which is a major plus. I guess you can't win them all, but they do balance each other out. We ordered our drinks & they were made lickety split. The seating area for the cafe is ample, with plenty of seating on 2 levels, meaning that finding a spot is usually not a problem. Barnes & Noble is a conveniently located, well-stocked bookstore where people actually WANT to gather. In an age where you can find books below selling price online, that's saying a lot. read more

In a world of death to bookstores, this Barnes & Noble remains King, Queen and their court of bookstores. This is the place that most closely resembles my childhood and the place where I learned how to love the written word and that with the right tome, I could read for hours, and with books I had to read for school, I read them with the knowledge there was no other choice. Anyways, this is where I know I can find pretty much any current book I'm looking for, and at a fair price. Without joining their book club, there still are a few good deals, and when not, they have the book I'm looking for, and thus I'm happy. The cafe serves Starbucks and there's lots of decent treats and good coffee drinks. If there's a book (guidebook) I want and Barnes & Noble doesn't have it on the shelf, they're happy to order it. The new Barnes & Noble space, located in the Oak Brook Mall, is a beautiful two level bookstore, resplendent with a gorgeous fireplace, comfy armchairs, and plenty of seating. Add to that a large cafe featuring Starbuck coffee and plenty of sandwiches and pastries, and you've got yourself a great place to while away the afternoon on a snowy cold day. However, I am disappointed in the content of the inventory. It seems to me that in spite of all of the extra space they have from their old location across the street, they now seem to have less books in their literature section than previous. Hardcovers and paperback fiction all share about 3 or 4 long shelves of the fiction section - and since I like to browse to find new unknown titles, this was a bit of a disappointment. Magazines? They've got a huge section. Children's books? Tons of titles. Even a movie and music area. But for my book browsing - I still will hit up my favorite Borders location right across the street. read more
