Normally I'm not a big fan of Michael's. The stores can be hard to navigate and it can be hard to find help. Recently, however I had a great experience with in-store pick up. I've been making kindness rocks and needed a new sealant to protect them from the elements. I was able to find products at Michael's and see product availability from Google. My order was ready in less than an hour. While the pick up area wasn't as visible as I would have liked, I appreciated the fact that one of the cashiers acknowledged me and said someone would be over soon. I only had to wait a few minutes and was out of the store quickly. I will definitely come back to do in-store pickup again. read more

I'm a professional artist and have always been excited to go and pick up a new canvas after completing a commission, but ever since they implemented self checkout the staff acts as though they can't be bothered. I have seen annoyance when I've shared that I'd like to wait for a cashier the last few times I visited, there has been no greeting of customers and no one says anything on the way out my last few purchases. Instead of asking, "How can I help?" or offering a greeting when I wait in line (even though there are self checkouts open), they've approached me asking "What's going on?" or "What's the issue?" -instead of offering help. Even questions in the aisles to ask for example the case to be unlocked there is no greeting, they just stand and wait for me to ask my question and then walk over to do the task before leaving. I even believe one of the cashiers took longer with a customer because she realized I was waiting for her instead of going to self checkout, and once she was done with the customer instead of helping me even though I was obviously next, she decided to go over to assist someone who came up to a checkout after me. When I notified her that she knew I was first she continued, stating that she would help them and then be with me. I'm pretty sure she was annoyed that I wouldn't just go to self checkout. Staff lacks basic customer service skills starting with the general manager. On Tuesday, June 3rd I stopped in between 11am and 12pm to look for some balloons and little to no selection available. No one around to ask for help and when I finally found the GM, the smug look on her face made me feel unwelcome and hesitant to even ask. Maybe it was the fact I was the only non white customer in the store? I decided to leave because I anticipated an unpleasant experience ahead. read more

This is one of my favorite Michaels locations. While all Michaels have the same basic inventory, some stores are kept better organized and utilize the store footprint better. Since I often run errands on South East 82nd, when I'm in the area I try to stop in and see what new seasonal items they have. While the basics like ribbon, baking, jewelry supplies, paper goods, crafts, frames, and baskets stay the same, for their seasonal stuff, they introduce new versions of items each year. It's early November but the Christmas and Hanukkah items are already out. I particularly like the new assortment of festive Nutcrackers that come in a variety of colors anf themes to meet anyone's décor. For me it's the silver in white with touches if blue that match my home and holiday decorations. Today I picked up a charming Nutcracker in a blue & white uniform banging on a drum. And two white fur raindeer with silver embellishments. Also grabbed some baking decorations. Always log onto their Website for coupons before you get to the register; they have coupons every day. This way so you can take advantage of the discounts are currently being offered. Today I received 20% off all full priced items which saved me a few bucks. Service is friendly. There is always in long line especially on weekends, but they do their best to get everybody through it quickly. During Covid they have one way aiskes set up but nobody really pays attention. Everyone is wearing their masks and the cashiers are sanitizing in between customers. All in all a really good Michaels location and experience. read more

When you have things locked up and cannot find an employee and are forced to walk to the front if the store to ask for assistance maybe instead of having a finger held up and being told your going to have to wait because everyone is busy. This is my go-to Michaels location. The store is smaller than others but is generally clean and organized. Unlike other craft stores, there are not piles upon piles of boxes of unopened product cluttering and blocking the aisles. Rarely do I enter the store and do not receive a greeting from whichever employee is closest to the door; special call-out to the manager whom I don't believe I've ever seen without a smile on her face. Better base prices than competitors so I don't ever feel like I'm wasting money when there isn't a sale or coupon to apply to an item. I needed to freshen up my artificial flowers in the area near my front door. I went to Michaels and found the store full of fun and colorful Christmas items. It certainly put me in a holiday mood. But I was looking for artificial flowers and not only for the Christmas season. I found the collection of flowers of all kinds and colors! I'm pretty sure I bought more than I needed! If you have an imagination and need to express your creativity by making something or just decorate up your space Michael's is the place to do it economically. Initially Michaels was a craft warehouse but they now have some pretty great home decor items as well. You can actually find some West Elm, Pottery Barn or RH decor knock offs at a fraction if the price to decorate. Michael's also has some pretty great sales and if you get on their email list you can get additional coupons. Not bad! We went in for some Christmas decor items and they were having 50 to 70% off almost all their Christmas. Two carts later we left smiling because we got some great deals. Shop in the isles here can be a little overwhelming for some people, because there is just so much to look at. Just take a deep breath, relax and take one isle at a time. :) read more

I don't do too much shopping in the store and my review is 99% about their customers framing department. The people in the frame department are exceptional in advising and recommending a frame solution for whatever you are wanting to frame. They have a nice selection of frames and archival mats as well as the best quality museum glass at the best price I have found anywhere. With the specials and regular discounts offered You can get your piece framed at as reasonable price as anywhere and done with exceptional quality. I took in a article to be framed and Janet told me there was nothing that would work except to purchase a $61 mat that the article would be glued onto and I would still have to purchase a frame. No one knows why she said it would cost $61 because they carry it in store! Well I think she just doesn't like people of my hue and when I went to pickup the young lady said no one is working in framing. I had to go get my order which had my name on it and the cashier had to call someone to tell her how to issue me a refund. The whole experience was uncalled for and just dumb. I've been here twice in a week and my biggest complaint is the long lines at the check stands. My first visit I stood in line with about half a dozen people in front of me for a good 5 minutes before I finally got stepped up to a check stand minutes after they called overhead for another cashier who eventually showed up. We are broken up for good Michael's. I have spent thousands on you, all while knowing I could have got a better price online, but because I enjoyed my time in the store, the selection and convenience, I wrote it off. I am about to make some very accurate matboard cuts for a frame up and the wife and I decided to stop by and purchase some to test/practice on. I know that in this shop, near their dinged/as-is frames (WHICH THEY DO SELL @ ONLY $8.00 A FRAME), they have a slot of matboards that are rejects. They have various flaws and dings. I have never purchased one, but they are sitting RIGHT there. I grabbed three sheets and saw a barcode for 18.99 marked on the slot but not on the actual matboard. I couldn't actually ask anyone about the purchasing process on the dinged up matboards, so I brought them up to the front counter with my other intended purchases. We are talking well over $100 here, which is very common for me shopping here. We get to the register and the cashier is first off not happy that I brought something up that didn't have a proper barcode on it. So, she calls up someone on her radio communication asking about "as-in matboards." There is some confusion and then eventually she says, "Oh those are trash!" She instantly grabs the three sheets and sweeps them behind the register, as in, no you can't have these. I'm confused by this, so I say "I would like to purchase them still, how much would they cost because I literally need trash to make trash cuts."...she gives me the hold on I'm talking here finger...I explain that I will walk out from the entire purchase if I cannot purchase the matboards and 10 seconds later, I was gone... I will never spend a dime on them again. TO LONG DIDN'T READ: You literally lost a customer forever because you would rather have a tax write off on your scrap paper that I was about to purchase for $60. What the hell is going on Michaels?! I'm done with this. I'll spend a premium to go to a nicer local independent place like "I've Been Framed." It's just around the corner and its is such a better experience. read more

I know it's a weird thing to review, but I hunted a solid part of today for a Christmas wreath. I looked at Target, Walmart, World Market, Pier One....lots of places. And the most original pieces I saw were at Michael's. I ended up getting a "swag"-style wreath (never heard that word in that context) that used bright colors (jewel toned purple, blue and green) with glitter, ribbon and pinecones I think. They had a huge variety of reusable wreaths that ranged a lot from casual, to traditional to regal to contemporary to very high end looking wreaths. I was so excited that I could still get supplies here and they bring it out to your car. I got out to read the big sign in front of the store that gave directions as to how to pick up my order. A woman came out and scolded me for not waiting inside my car. It was my first time with this process so I didn't know. I went back to my car and I called to let them know I was outside. Please head on over to the massive array of fake flowers (of varying qualities), and find appropriate vines, ivys, and leaves to fit the bill. Wanna decoupage candle cups for presents? Ooookay! Just walk this way, for cheap glass holders, then head down the aisle just a bit further for several Mod Podge options--matte? Yes! Glossy? Yes! Iridescent sparkles? Ohhh hells yeah! Looking for a photo frame that's the classy-class? They've got an entire section, complete with its own staff for custom pieces. Stamps galore, beads galore, yarn galore, wrapping supplies galore, scrapbooking shiz galore! Can you see why I would go a bit crazy? Most recently, I went to Michaels for some beading rings. I ended up getting the wrong kind (although, as Big Daddy TGunn would say, I "made it work"), but that was mostly because there were SO MANY OPTIONS. If you come to this location, be prepared for a long checkout line, but if you're an arty fanatic, that's just bygones. read more

Walking in, you feel like the towering racks of discount Halloween stuff will topple upon you; but I gotta say that sky high racks of crafy goodness create a cozy wrap-me-up-in-yarn-and-paint-clay-pots ambiance. I went for frames, most of which were not available due to my odd sized art. "Custom is your best bet for those sizes". But the young lady at the frame counter gave me several D-hooks gratis as I bought a lot of other hardware. Walking away with 3 frames, 2 on sale, another young lady at the register said, "If you come back tomorrow you can get 40% off the non-sale frame, that sale starts tomorrow." Alright, I can wait a day. And then, as we check out, she hands me an extra 40% off coupon. That was sure nice, informative, and helpful. She was pretty much useful, funny, and cool. read more

I'm really just not a fan of the employees. They're not helpful. If you do need help, you must approach them. IF they know anything to help you, they'll rush off to a section and then leave you there. But that's if they know something, because most of them don't know anything. Then there are the long lines for no good reason. And no, chatting isn't a good reason. The cashiers are awful. You stand there forever because they're either chatting with each other, or they're talking to the customer that's paying. And you know what, cashier? Even the customer just wants to pay and leave. They don't want to talk about life. So the lines are already horrible, but then add in the fact they're extremely hesistant to open another register... Great, right? I've always felt this way about this particular Michaels, but last night was especially bad. 8:30 at night and the store was nearly empty. But still, this old lady at the register just had to talk to the girl in front of me, so I waited for five minutes... The girl was already rung up, this lady just wanted to talk to her. Finally, she starts to ring me up, and the price is wrong. I tell her that, so asks me to show her where I got them from for a price check. My $7.99 string of beads (I grabbed 4 of them) should've only been $3.99 with an additional 40% off. Well, I show her and we get back there and the first thing she says is, "You're right. Let's just re-ring you up." We get up there, and they're still ringing up as $7.99, but she's doing a manuel 40% off. The manager walked by and she told her, "She was right, they're another 40% off." The manager girl says, "Yeah, it's in the ad. Don't you have one?" And this is the same manager that the lady asked to do a price check, but said no because her register was open to count cash. Ummm... So you could've told her that in the first place, but you just didn't want to. Awesome. And then the cashier throws in under her breath, "I have one, but I never look at them," and says to me, "Maybe I shouldn't say that out loud." Anyway, I asked, "didn't we figure out they're supposed to be $3.99?" And she said, "Well, it's coming up as $7.99, so someone must have put them there." And me being me, I replied, "Yeah, like an employee since ALL of them were there?" She didn't say anything and just kept ringing me up, so I said, "They're not supposed to be $7.99." Finally, she asked, "So do you not want them?" Real problem solver, lady. I hope that since she concluded they're not $3.99, she also didn't go back to the beads and move all of them to the right place. They're a pretty dysfunctional store to begin with, so it wouldn't surprise me. Do the bare minimum, right? Obviously. P.S. I'd rather go to Joanns because they accept all coupons at once, even Michaels coupons, and they don't take the discount off the least expensive item, but the most expensive. Most of the Michaels locations I've visited appear to be your typical craft store chain. Paper, Yarn, Martha Stewart, yada yada. This location touts that, and...claustrophobia! For some reason, this location has their aisles and rows much, much smaller and narrower than ANY other store I've shopped. I never, ever feel the need to browse (which is complete opposite of my normal shopaholic behavior). I will shop all of the other craft stores within a 10-mile radius from my home before using Michaels as a last resort. read more

I drove 20 minutes to the store and asked the first salesperson I saw whether they had the item I was looking for. He said he wasn't sure but if they did, it would be in aisle 32. I went to aisle 32 and didn't see the item. I looked for another salesperson but couldn't find anyone so I waited in the checkout line to ask someone else. I asked the salesperson there if they carried the item and she said they probably didn't but if they did, it would be in aisle 32. I had already been there, so I figured Michaels didn't have the item and I left the store. When I got home, I went online to order the item. I saw that Michaels did carry the item. When I put in my zip code, the site told me that it is in stock at the Ross Center Store, the same store I was at, in Aisle 40. I am a working mom and it is a serious pet peeve of mine when someone wastes my precious time. Now I have to go back to the same exact store to get the item! read more

In the past I would have given more stars, but since the Joann mega store opened at Eastport, the ~10 extra minutes is totally worth it to me. Yeah they have the basics. Don't expect anything very specialized though. My biggest problem is it seems the employee turn over is very high, and with each new person the lack of crafting experience or interest decreases. While you can generally have an idea of what Michael's carries, it can sometimes be a bit of a game of chance over whether or not what you need will actually be in stock. I've found myself going back several times, hoping that the supply I needed would be restocked, only to give up and turn to Amazon. Of course, I'd rather be able to buy in person and skip the shipping charge, so it's nice when they do have something in stock. This particular location, as well as having frequent problems with stock, is woefully disability unfriendly. The aisles are all small and cramped, and the checkout lane is difficult to navigate even if you don't have mobility issues. The only reason I keep going back is because it's just a few blocks away, and they carry a huge amount of DMC embroidery floss. read more

Like a belly flop on asphalt. That's how I'd characterize the service I received recently at Michaels. My order was simple enough. I wanted a frame in which to put a photo of a specified size (12"x12"). Angie, a short, dark haired employee recommended a frame and then proceeded to cut a mat. Quick and easy, right? Yes, for someone who has mastered middle school math. However, when I got home I discovered that the mat was too small. Upon calling, the employee I spoke to told me to bring the mat and they would re-cut it to the proper dimensions for the frame. Angie, the same woman, re-cut the mat, but this time I decided to double check with measuring tape. At this point, another saleswoman came out to check the inside dimensions. The 2nd attempt was not cut properly either. The other employee took over and cut one correctly on the first try. Throughout the process, there was zero acknowledgement of the time they had cost me to make a second trip, the need to double check their measurements, or of their errors. Though the location is convenient for me, the need to make multiple trips would erase any time savings. In sum, their ineptitude, coupled with the lack of customer service, means I will be actively searching for other craft stores to patronize. I did call and spoke with a manger, who while somewhat apologetic, only offered that I could try another Michael's location if I was unhappy with their service. I doubt I will. read more

We were in the store for the third time in as many days. The male employee made a point of complimenting a man in a "Make America Great Again" hat. It was obnoxious. It became a big thing where the man announced to his wife he had another hat lover. He made a show of it ands gave him a thumbs up. It was wildly inappropriate and aggressive. This is usually my go to store because it's closest to my house. Hobby Lobby opened down the street. I'll make the drive from now on. read more
