The first visit I went to the framing department to get pricing on three frames, the second time I went in to get pricing for framing a 36 X 24 inch picture. I would think walking in with a big picture, I would not be considered a stealing risk. However both time security followed me as if I was going to rob the place. JUST BAD! The store is stocked with a lot great things for artsy people! If you can't find it here the staff is qualified enough to help you locate it anywhere. The framing department is the same as most framing departments. You will pay higher prices for custom work. That's normal. I decided to shop elsewhere. Great supplies for the artist. Located in the heart of the pearl district there's ample street parking and there is a streetcar stop right around the corner. This place is huge and has pretty much anything I've ever needed. Pens, pencils, brushes, paper. I also bought a desk and some canvases as well. Staff is super friendly and helpful. Bamboozled in the framing department - Frustrating, disappointing, expensive, dishonest and unfair I brought in a large poster for framing, wanting a modern, flat frame for it with museum glass. This was my first (and last) experience with Blick. The employee (who no longer works there) who "designed" the "project" insisted that only certain molded frame styles would work, which he indicated to me to choose from. I didn't like any of them, but selected one. In addition, I replaced the glass in another large poster and an artwork which were already framed (3 "projects") for a total of over $550 at "half price." The framed poster looks ridiculous - like a window with a poster in it. I asked if I could get the frame swapped out, since I had gone with the employee's regrettable recommendation. No such luck. Although shown as Utrecht Art supplies on the Yelp page, this store is now Blick Art Materials...see exterior store photo...as Blick acquired Utrecht in April. Based on my first visit yesterday, Blick seems like a fabulous resource of supplies for artists at all levels from scaredtobe (like me) to wannabe to newbie to serious student to accomplished professional and across mediums. Lots of windows on Glisan side, brightly lit, well stocked, friendly staff, cool floors (seriously,...look down...reclaimed from a high school gym), great music (lovely classical yesterday but the staff says they get to choose something new each day), plus lots of friendly and helpful staff to direct we who are completely intimidated in an art supply store to find our way. My intimidation at the idea of art creation was started by my third grade teacher in a NE Portland public school classroom who held up my attempt to create a lamb picture out of cotton balls and craft paper to the rest of the class and said the following: "I hope all of you are doing a better job than this." No. I did not make that up. Perhaps it is because I am so artistically challenged myself that I so love art of all kinds as created by others. (I also still love crayons and to color, in and outside the lines, but that's my little secret so please don't tell.) Maybe it is why I was so grateful to the welcoming and unpretentious staff here for not making me feel like a failure when I asked questions about a couple of things in the store that I was going to buy for an artistic friend. I can't imagine an art supply they don't have at Blick. I was mesmerized by the beautiful art papers, hand made lovely things, that were art in themselves. And if you're trying to find something unique as a gift for little children, you might find it here, as we did, in things like budding artists sets of paints and chalk and craft papers and stickers. It might help move them away from watching images on a screen created by others and into their imaginations to allow them to express themselves in art. Then maybe the greatest gift of all is no matter what it is they hold up to show you is to say something like the following, "That is such a interesting piece you've created! I can't wait to see what you'll show me next." THIS N THAT: 1) PARKING: Although this part of the Pearl District is as parking scarce as all others, it is not as hard to find a spot on street as you might expect it to be during business hours. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in to door and ramp right alongside interior stairs leads to fully level store inside with lots of room in aisles. 3) FRAME STOCK: Looks like a great assortment of picture framing stock; one of my favorite things to peruse. read more

A cool and ORGANIZED art store. Yes, a contradiction. Artists, like my self and art stores tend to be a bit haphazard and disorganized. I, as an artist, am actually organized, it's odd, but I know where everything is and it all has a place. Blick is basically just like that. I had never been to an actual Blick store. I have only seen the catalogs and their online site. So this was a first for me. I guess with all the galleries in the Pearl, it seems fitting that the store is over there. Makes perfect sense. I will say prices can be a bit high, depending on what you are getting but currently there is a big canvas sale going on and it's going on for awhile. That's good. I need to purchase some. Every medium you need is there and it's a store to wander about. They had a rather large section for ceramics, or at least larger that what I've seen prior. I don't think I've ever come in here to buy something without it being locked up in some case. I guess I didn't realize how many artists and art students are thieves? So usually I come in, and because nothing is ever where it used to be, you have to track down an employee who is free to help (just kidding, nobody is ever free to help) and if you are lucky enough to find that, they make you wait while they call for someone who actually can help. Then you wait around forever before asking again, the call goes out again, and this time someone shows up. But they're really unhappy they have to help you, and it shows. They condescendingly ask what you want, they speed-walk to where it is, they unlock the cage and stare at you while making sure you see that they are visibly annoyed that they have to wait there for you while you look through the items to find the one you want. It really is the most undignified shopping experience imaginable. The whole operation here sucks and reeks of customer resentment. They have rent-a-cops here now, too. Seriously, I've seen bodegas in the Bronx that make you feel more welcome than this place does. I order from Amazon now. Better prices, less regret. read more

Blick is the store I want to go to after I die and go to heaven. They have everything this amateur artist wannabe dreams of. They have pens galore, and you can try then before you buy them. You can try a lot of other mediums too. I was there specifically for colored pencils. The staff who helped me spectacular! He looked in the overhead boxes and then his computer for them. They were sold out but my goodness, that was some service I do not encounter very much anymore. This store was one of my favorites and it continues to prove so. If I have any mad money, it goes here. Having just bought some art supplies online from Dick Blick, I am reminded of a recent experience I had with the Portland store. I hadn't bought art supplies in a while and needed some quick advice. The guys I talked to there were super helpful and informative. AND when I went to check out, the wonderful Wren asked me if I had a Dick Blick card. As I was unlikely to again enter a physical store, I said he shouldn't bother. But he persevered and said, "Let's find out if this can save you money right now." Always love this art store. This is not like Michael's (although I love Michael's too but for different reasons). This is for the serious artist. All good quality here. Scares me when my kid picks up a basket and starts filling. But there is no price to be had on art. Like the other reviewers, I also felt the security guard's watch was overly intrusive. Her body language --she ambushes you as you are walking in, running over to the door, trying to engage in convo loudly and basically intimidate shoppers, and also while you are coming out of the store (after clearly seeing me pay at the front). She stands again very close, noisy and front-on as if watching what is underneath my winter coat. I find it offensive and so uncomfortable when I'm literally a normal person, not a thief. You would think that with their suspicious attitude towards shoppers that they would be afraid of scaring off their guests. I won't be back and will have to shop online for art supplies because it was so awkward. read more

My visits to Blick Art Materials in the Portland, Oregon Downtown (it's Northwest Portland) area were frequent. I don't like the layout of the store. It is easy to find what you are looking for, yes... but, there is nearly always a harried shopper/ mad person looking for what they need last minute on the aisle that I was supposed to be on. I looked for items for my Darling Husband's mother. She is a local artist. I was asked to buy a certain kind of art supply. I didn't want to carry it home on the MAX or TriMet bus... so I bought her a gift card. Back before the Pandemic... I went on excursions into Downtown Portland by myself on my day off from my Union Job (which was also in Downtown Portland). There were about three or four people who were basically running to get to the Cashier and out the door before a certain time. I couldn't tell you what their hurry is. I don't recommend going to Downtown Portland for anyone's art supplies... not even if you live in the Downtown Core. And, yes... you can take your time shopping at all the art supply stores. Some Clerks at the counter often prefer that. Some people aren't thankful when they get gifts or birthday presents... I think you know what I mean. My Darling Husband's mother's husband took the gift card... but said something about it being too late for whatever reason. In total I made about five visits to this Blick Art Materials store.... and each visit was nearly the same as the last visit. read more

This place is like bliss for me! Not only do they have pretty much every art supply you could ever need (and if they don;t they can order it for you!) it's clean, well lit, fully stocked, and the employees are always super helpful. It seems like all the employees I've talked to are also artists, which is nice, because they always seem to "get" me and my sometimes strange questions. (Like, if there such thing as a liquid medium that dries fast? Or, what kind of pen can I use on top of dried acrylic paint? Etc.) The prices are typically fair and they offer discounts to students. I'm also on their email list and get weekly coupons and discount/sale notices, which is cool. Now if we could just get a SE location, I'd be in there every week! read more

I had the very good fortune to have been taught calligraphy by my art teacher while in middle school. She was a student of Lloyd Reynolds, the Reed Professor, who brought calligraphy into the art mainstream. i don't often work with my calligraphy a lot anymore because it's a time-consuming skill, but when I do so, I love coming to Blick for they have everything I need unlike other outlets say they do (and you can say that about any of the artistic disciplines represented at Blick). If nothing else, it's just pure pleasure to spend time in true art stores such as Blick). It smells like an art store should. The sales staff know what they're talking about and are helpful. The store is well organized and easy to use. If you need art supplies, it is pure pleasure to shop here. I'm finicky about my calligraphy supplies and wouldn't shop elsewhere. read more
