Purchased kolache this morning at Gibbs in olmstead.They had wonderful filling,looked great but were very underbaked and doughy.

UPDATED REVIEW (2024): Hometown staple. Fresh baked goods including cakes, doughnuts, muffins, and bread. Also available are made to order deli meat sandwiches. Service is also attentive and friendly. My favourite worker who works there is an old lady, Luba from Ukraine, who I love chatting with because she just exudes joy and kindness. Plus, who doesn't love a Grandmother? There are younger workers there too who are nice. Prices are very decent. In my recent July 2024 visit, I got a Miami donut and a German Kaiser sandwich. I had never ordered any of their sandwiches before so The famous Miami donut has only gone up in price by $1.35. It cost $1.65 in 2019 and now, in July 2024, it cost $3.00. The sandwich that I ordered was a 'build your own' sandwich on Kaiser bread which was $6.50. I added turkey, tomatoes, their oil/dressing mix, and mayo on the side. The German Kaiser sandwich was a delicious second lunch for me after 3:30pm (the lunch I ate earlier in the day which I prepared at home was very light). Since my below review in 2019, I still love Michael's Bakery and I wish I lived closer to the business. While they may not be one of those "fancier" bakeries, they are still very good. Never judge a book by its cover (including inside appearance). The outside ("cover") building is simple which is fine since it tied into the neighbourhood (Brooklyn) that the bakery is located in. Outdated interior, but in the way where you never want an update. The kind that signals the owners are more focused on the quality of their products than the flashiness of their storefront. Despite living only a few blocks away, it took almost three years for my husband and I to finally make a visit. Coming during the holiday season was a delight because they have a huge assortment of seasonally decorated treats - their butter cookies being a specialty. I got an assortment, which you pay for by weight rather than count, and all were good but the standout was the cinnamon star cookie. So good! We also got a loaf of bread and made fluffy garlic bread from it. I noticed they make deli sandwiches here as well which I'll be eager to return and try. Ordered a King Cake for a Mardi Gras party I was having amongst friends and family. I called the evening before and they were able to provide one for pickup the next day which worked out perfectly. I had never been inside this bakery prior to picking up the cake and I was impressed with the many different pastry and dessert options they had so I also grabbed a few more things to try. Prices were very fair as well! Everything ended up being delicious. The king cake was a hit with everyone and was extremely flavorful, perfect texture, and not dry at all. The bakery is good but the atmosphere when you walk in is not welcoming. The girl that was waiting on us looked bored to tears and very unfriendly, like she was doing us a favor waiting on us . A real effort on her part. Another couple of girls walked in that worked there and they looked at us like we didn't belong there. Just angry looks on their faces. I did buy a few things but no thank you's. As a matter of fact I said thank you to her for giving me my bag and change! My sister and I just wanted to get out of there! Awful! The Miami donut was good (like a cruller/donut stick) but the inside was yellow... the blueberry fold was also yellow inside, and not very tasty. Young girl behind the counter wasn't friendly and clearly would rather have been elsewhere. Didn't realize they had bread, it was almost hidden in a cabinet behind the counter - otherwise I'd have tried some. This was one of those places where they have so much, you just know it can't all be fresh, and then you have to guess which items are fresh. I don't know. read more

This is a throwback to the bakery you visited as a child... they have the usual mainstays of donuts, breads but the many other European pastries and and delicacies are what I go for. My kids love the cookie case and enjoy picking their favorite shapes and colored designs. Some of my favorites are their uniquely flavored large muffins and a variety of kuchen and coffee cakes. The best of all is the pizza bread. Wow! Best I ever had. They also have a deli and my husband has bought several other unique food items. Staff is nice and are super at helping you pick your perfect delights, as well as being patient w kids. Rated 3 instead of 4 stars. Intrigued I searched Michael's Bakery on Yelp and was stunned with the reviews. I decided to give it a try! Parking: Street parking and a lot behind the store Customer Service: The first person I encountered at the store didn't greet me, however, another staff member was very nice and hospitable. Baked Goods: Amazing! I highly, highly recommend the Miami. It is a unique pastry. It's is like a glazed slightly buttery croissant while maintaining it's light but crunchy texture. I had a fresh one from the oven, and it was incredible. I saw a previous review stating to purchase as many as you can, and I definitely regret only buying one. The orange muffin was on point, and the cheese pastry was delicious as well. Not overwhelming in its sweetness level while maintaining a balance of cheese and dough. The price is also very fair, and for two muffins, one cheese pastry, and one Miami, the total cost was $7. I highly recommend stopping by to try a pastry or a sandwich! My German great-grandmother, and grandmother, and mother all made apple kuchen during the halcyon days of my youth, each placing it to cool just out of my reach, which could explain so much, but let's leave that to my phalanx of psychiatric professionals. So when I staggered into Michael's and saw fresh, warm kuchen, right there in the front case, I was a goner. I asked if they just had a Barcalounger in the back, maybe a quilt, some pajamas... I was planning on staying a good long time. But I had to scram back to work, so I ordered the Kaiser sandwich. Since there is no such animal as a "ham," I had ham and Swiss, on a fresh-on-the-inside-crunchy-on-the-outside sesame roll. One of my grandmas working there sliced the bread, then grabbed a honey ham and sliced that, then grabbed the cheese and sliced that. Yeah, fresh, home-made, with that hair-in-a-bun-rocking-the-apron Old World Style service. Neat, efficient, and all for seiben Deutsche marks, ja, as I just had to grab a white chocolate with hazelnut bar. HAD to. Best white cake in Cleveland. Great hard rolls and bread too. I love the fresh sandwiches you can buy there. I'm a third generation shopper here and the quality has never gone down. Have to get here early, by afternoon they are often sold out of most things. Beware of the parking lot, it has lots of pot holes and is tiny. My mom wiped out and landed on her special order cake. The bakery did give her a smaller cake (all they had) as a replacement. A few cars can park on the street in front or on the northside. Then there are a few steep stairs to get in the place. Randomly stumbled in here on a desperate search for the perfect cupcake for a coworker, low and behold i struck gold! Michaels was so clean, man i swear i could have eaten off the counters. not one trace of dust or fingerprints, nothing but sweet smelling aromas and super SUPER friendly staff. I got some sort of red velvet cupcake tower which melted each one of my senses upon eating it. My coworker agreed that the cream cheese frosting was some of the best he had ever had! A little bakery on the corner of broadview Michaels is that homey feeling you want in a bakery. Fresh breads, fresh cookies and cakes, the staff was knowledgeable again in allergens which in todays age is beyond important. My husband ordered a birthday cake for me. The cake was delicious and so beautifully decorated. The flowers were pretty, and they put sparkling sugar on them to make them stand out even more. There were even little dots decorating the side of the cake. Whoever made this cake is an artist, and takes pride in their work. My wife and I have been looking for a small mom and pop bakery close to home as the ones we had have all closed. We went to Michaels- It is about 15 minutes from home and 2 minutes from where I've worked for 13 years. I've driven by it many times, without a passing thought.I had a couple pieces of Vienna bread with butter for lunch, and just finished a Miami donut (my wife is now consuming hers) we also bought a couple pieces of bakery for later. I don't think I'll be passing by Michaels anymore without stopping in. Social distancing in the time of corona is a little awkward- only 3 customers in the store- but you don't see the signs or how many people are in there until you're in the door. Went into the bakery to pick up a special order that I placed the day before. When I came in no one greeted me as I stood awkwardly waiting.... finally when the counter point person spoke to me, she handed me my order and it was wrong. She then called up the girl who took my order and yelled at her right in front of me. I said it was no biggie but wanted to see if I could my order still, even if I had to pick it up the day after. The bakery came to talk to me and he wouldn't even look at me and it was clear he didn't want to deal with me. So I'm home for the Holidays after a long absence having been in Houston for 30 years. My mother broke her foot so she's had a hard time getting around and this year decided to skip baking and pick up some kolaczki from here. She said they were great but she way undersold the ones she typically makes. The ones she bought from here were mediocre at best, dough way too thick so the fillings were hardly discernible for flavor, totally overpowered by the dough. I have been buying their Breads and other delectable pastries since the 1960's. It was very convenient, since I lived just a short distance from the Bakery. Since I moved away from Cleveland in the late 1980's, I have still managed to return whenever I could. I now live a little closer than before (85 miles) and I manage to come whenever I can. The Bread is always fresh and wonderful, (I usually purchase the Light German Rye) but it doesn't last very long, it's that good. My recommendation is: Go there and try it for yourself, you will not be disappointed. read more
