(Phonetic Spelling: k-vahs). Russian kvass is a probiotic-rich, low-alcohol beverage made primarily from rye bread, distinguishing it from other fermented drinks like kombucha and kefir, which use different base ingredients and fermentation processes. Unlike many commercial versions of kvass, traditional kvass retains live cultures and has a unique, complex flavor profile. (I liken it to cold root beer, with a hint of sassafrass tea). The brand we purchase comes in a two liter & has live cultures, so it is refrigerated; it features an Orthodox Papal figure. It is delicious! He usually also purchases various chocolates and candies, as well as small frozen sweets that resemble tiny chocolate dipped waffle cone ice creams. I know minimal Russian, so he usually speaks for us. TBH-I don't think I'd be comfortable going as a non native Russian speaking consumer.

We are so fortunate to have ethnic markets like this in our area. Whenever I'm on the east side I try to go there. The service is great and I'm sure somebody could help me translate when a label is not in English, but most of the foods have pictures and are pretty self-explanatory. I used to go to Jack's all the time when I first moved to Cleveland 5 years ago but haven't been in…read more3 years. I remember it being pretty good but pretty expensive for a kosher-style deli. Is it still good? Still expensive? Yes and yes! I took my long-distance boyfriend to Jack's for a pre-Shabbat lunch when he was in town in mid-April 2025. I had hyped it up and hoped it would deliver. The entire place was very busy and full of yummy looking deli meats and desserts that I had to resist (I can't afford a lot here!). I want to try their Russian tea biscuit next time though and see how it compares to Davis Bakerys! The interior is nothing special and the waitstaff were pretty aloof. Oh well. It's a deli! I ordered a not so hungry portion of Jack's Juicy Corned beef on challah bread and a side of potato salad. My boyfriend, who was keeping kosher for Passover rules the week we went to Jack's, got Jared's Freessers Delight with applesauce. His latkes were yummy and I enjoyed the corned beef slices but the challah bread wasn't that yummy. I've had way better challah. Remind me not to buy my challah from Jack's. The potato salad was pretty good. Very creamy, if that's your thing. Our bill came to nearly $40 for two lunch meals and one soda. That's insane! He enjoyed his meal and had no complaints as he lives in a city with limited options for Jewish food so he was grateful to have anything. I will be coming back to Jack's in the future but maybe I'll try to order food that offers more for my money.

Jack's Deli is an Eastern European/Jewish deli that's been a part of the community since the…read more1980's. The original owner grew up in then Czechoslovakia and brought a part of home to the US. Recently the deli was acquired by the Cleveland Restaurant Group. I've been visiting the deli for over half a decade when I crave Eastern European meals. Lately I've been less enthusiastic about visiting due to food changes. RECENT CHANGES: The deli operations have remained unchanged from the customer standpoint. There is still restaurant area and deli. The menu is the same. The hours of operating were reduced with few dinner times remaining. The food recently drastically worsened seemingly due to ingredients. Soups especially took a hit tasting more artificial. ATMOSPHERE: Casual, old style, mom and pop atmosphere. Most guests are families. The front of the business is a deli where you can order your goodies and pay at the counter. The back is the restaurant where you can get seated by the host who is located by the deli. The layout makes entry and exit challenging. FOOD: I always take my food to go, and never dined at the restaurant. I previously ordered many dishes and to be honest can't remember them all. All were good. As a result, I'll talk about my latest order. - Cabbage Borscht ($11.75 for a quart) - I'm from the country who invented borscht and had many borschts in my life from different countries. This is not borscht. It has no beets. It's a vegetable cabbage soup. The menu does not indicate this is a spicy soup, the receipt indicates "hot cabbage soup." The soup is spicy which borscht never is. Worst of all, there is a very strong hint of canned tomatoes or some tomato paste. I couldn't eat more than two spoons of this soup due to artificial flavor. It's very poorly made. It's hard to name this homemade soup as listed in the menu because of artificial ingredients. Real tomatoes would drastically improve this soup. - Mushroom Barley ($11.75) - The soup wasn't pleasant. It tastes slimy. I think that the problem is the base is some vegetable puree. I didn't enjoy it. - Knishes ($7.90 x 2) - I love knishes here and they taste the same as before. Very heavy on the meat (Rueben in my case) and delicious. To be very honest they don't always feel fresh but I love them just the same. SERVICE: Service is average. The guys at the deli aren't too warm or friendly. The checkout people are always nice. There is clearly some miscommunication between the kitchen and the front of the house. Items are frequently promised but then denied. The front of the house seems to not know at all what's available in the back. There has to be some communication or inventory tool to fix this. It's confusing to the first time customers. It's also confusing to me with every order. PARKING: Plenty of parking available with two entrances and exits. The main entry from Cedar Road is the easiest. Stay vigilant as you navigate the parking lot, there are some narrow parts and alleys with two way traffic. The one differentiating factor of this restaurant was its homemade appeal. Everything tasted like someone's Eastern European grandma shared the recipe and prepared the food. Now the food is tasting commercial and lost its initial appeal. I'll be back to Jack's Deli for the deli (knishes) but won't be ordering any restaurant items again.

When I walked in, I had to settle for an unbelievably delicious scrapple sandwich because they were temporarily out of pastrami. Scrapple with a handmade, red, cabbage, slaw, onion, marmalade, and cheese. So creative and so delicious. My wife had asparagus and fennel soup. The fennel perfectly cut through the richness of the asparagus. Add to this one of the best potato salads I've ever had and it would've been enough. Until Jeremy came over to the table with some fresh pastrami to taste. I don't know where the best pastrami in America is, but whatever it is it's unlikely to be better than this. This is a place you should not miss.

Good luck. They have a happy hour. We took advantage of that. $10 chicken sandwich and $5 fries. The fries are fresh cut and plenty to share. Super good. I am told the chicken sandwich was good. Chicken was thick and good. Pickles mayo all good. I got the pastrami. Pastrami is sliced thick with slaw and their homemade mustard. Pastrami good. Bread ok. Slaw OK. The homemade mustard was super strong and not that enjoyable. Had a kinda a horseradish taste. Didn't like it at all. Took over the meat. The meat by itself was pretty good. Moist, tender, tastee. But with the whole sandwich not good. Next time I know. And the sandwich for $18 was thick pieces of meat, I think I would have preferred sliced thin and stacked. Kinda like corn beef is. I think I wouldn't have fought eating it so much. Thick slices were awkward and I couldn't eat it cleanly. It was a puzzle that kept falling apart. Had to put it back together and with the mustard was too much for me. I did get a chocolate phosphate. Hadn't had one in a decade. It was good. Paper straw made it impossible to drink the last few sips cuz it can't hold up. We did get a black and white cookie to go and an oatmeal pie. Both really good. Oh and if you see a bakery item get it when you see it. Otherwise it's gone. Ordering dinner I saw a chocolate chip cookie but by the time I went to get it, it was gone. Prices for happy hour were good. But it's not cheap. Our bill was $47 total. That was 2 sandwiches, 1 order of fries, 2 drinks a phosphate and canned drink. No cookies. We got those later. So not cheap. Would I go back. Yes. I feel like I would try something else and give it a shot. I think now I know I'd do better.

But then the woman at the counter tried to charge me $75 for my cake even though the ticket taped on the box said in big sharpie letters "my name, $50" $75 vs $50 is a very big difference in price for an 8" single layer cheesecake. I corrected her and she asked me to wait for someone to show up to confirm the price.... But I didn't see her confer with anyone and again the price was written on the order ticket.
