Found durable twine & miniature. Clothes pines to hang our cards this year!

Michael's always makes me feel like I want to create something! Michael's always has something new & exciting. My latest visit produced several great finds including 50% off lights and other Christmas decor. I bought 4 sets of lights! I'm a kid again at Michael's during the holiday season! Cinnamon scented pine cones, angel lights, Christmas lights, santa earrings, wreaths, etc. Check out the clever clothes pin clips and sturdy used to hang my Christmas cards this year. Also found a beautiful wreath (& the hook) to hang it on our front door - HALF OFF! Can you tell Michael's has, once again, warmed my holiday spirit heart. I suggest avoiding the busiest days - Saturdays & Friday nights. Especially now with limited staff due to COVID. My only con - it was super busy with too few cashiers (2) and a long long line waiting.

I ordered Wilton, they sent their store brand. It took me all day to get store credit back.

The framing counter leaves a lot to be desired. Staff is incompetent and inconsistent. There seems to be a frequent turnover.

The demise of the old school hobby shops has left a void that's hard to fill. Some of Ann Arbor's…read moreold shops doubled as toy stores (used to be a good one for lead and pre painted miniatures at the old Arbor Land Mall), Kay-B Hobbies at Briarwood was good for models and basic paint supplies as well as a decent selection of Avalon Hill boardgames. Even Meijer Thrifty Acres wasn't half bad in the hobby division. The best all around though was Ryder's on W. Liberty St. They had it all: Trains, D & D, board games, miniatures, motorized cars and planes, etc... By the second decade of the 2000s these were defunct options, so it was great accidentally stumbling across Warhammer in the Lamp Post Plaza where Trader Joe's can also be found. A few years ago there was a vitamin store of sorts here but apparently they're long gone. Anyhow, I was dying to go in and see what they had. Upon entering the host greeted us, perhaps a bit too peppy, but a nice guy nevertheless. The store was packed with all things Warhammer, which is a longstanding miniatures war game where beautifully painted armies of miniatures are maneuvered into combat where ultimately the luck of a die roll determines the stated up front outcome. Sample dialogue overheard: "I'm going to shoot him in the face with my pistol", then the die roll followed.... a miss. So basically it's a male geek's club 99.9% of the time. Lucky for me I have a geeky gf and she was just as interested in checking out the stock and displays as I was. They even had a table where people can paint their newly acquired figures-- Citadel Paints and brushes, as well as that brand's outstanding tools were accessible. I doubt that option is free since the average price for one color paint pod is $4+, nevertheless, I wager it's worth every penny for someone unable to shoulder the high cost of the hobby. All-in-all, we left with a couple of miniatures, a paint brush-water holder and an expandable figure base holder to facilitate steady detailing.

It was closed today but it looked nice inside. Open tables, paints and terrain. Great for a…read moreWarhammer gamer.

    Kerrytown Ann Arbor

Spun Ann Arbor is a fiber artist's dream!! I first heard about this establishment through Knitty…read moreNatty's YouTube when Natalie and Kent went on their cross country LYS tour. The video was fun and made this establishment look like a warm & welcoming space. I appreciated learning more of the owners' origin story as Natalie interviewed them. All of that to say, I was more than motivated to check the place out. When I walked in, I was not disappointed. Located in Kerrytown, Spun has a local charm to it. The store itself is a great size where it's large enough for patrons to explore without feeling too crowded yet still able to maintain a cozy hipster vibe making it a great reflection of Ann Arbor. The sheep artwork (designed and drawn by one of the owners) is creative branding and contributes to the memorable experience. The yarn selection is massive and easy to navigate because of how well organized it is based on yarn weight. The amount of yarn may be overwhelming to some because there is a lot to look at - not a bad thing, only something to take into consideration. I thought it was quite extensive which left me speechless! Some may find it helpful to have a shopping list going in or know ahead of time what your timeframe is because you will want to spend time exploring each aisle. I had researched ahead of time on their website though found that when I looked at the yarn in person, some of the color hues I was expecting were different in-store compared to the photo listing online. I didn't mind as I had time to look and adapt, perusing in person so I was able to choose something else. I appreciated that there were quite a few local dyers, artisans, and spinners spotlighted - from the yarn to the notions/yarn bowls offered. Staff was welcoming - Annri introduced herself, provided a basket, and made herself available if I had questions. It was very friendly of her! The selection of yarn ranged in price where many would be able to find something in their budget. I felt some items were on the pricier side but that's considering the college town factor as well as that I only recently began transitioning to independent dyers, natural fibers & hand-spun. I did appreciate that there were several economy priced yarns offered which seemed like more options compared to other LYS' I've visited but still considerably less in proportion to Spun's independent dyer options. I walked away with stitch markers, two sets of double pointed needles, and four skeins of yarn! What a great haul! The staff was also kind enough to wind it for me free of charge which I greatly appreciated. I only had to wait in line and return for my skeins after 30 minutes. I could have easily spent all day at Spun!! It sets the standard for LYS and I'm excited for my next visit!!

I loved the layout of the yarn - everything was so easy to browse. There were several different areas to sit and knit or browse through magazines. I did find a few yarns to try and a new felt project. I will definitely be coming back here again.
