I wish that he didn't retire but I can't begrudge him doing so. He was the best doctor that I have ever had

I wanted to share this for anyone trying to choose a surgeon...because I know firsthand how…read moreoverwhelming and important this decision is. When I first met Dr. Gassman, I'm not even going to lie... my first thought was, "He looks like Doogie Howser" I remember thinking, wait... are you old enough to be doing this?! But that feeling didn't last long. I came in with a million questions (seriously), and he answered every single one with patience, confidence, and detail. He never made me feel rushed or like I was asking too much which meant a lot during such a big decision. I also did a ton of research on him where he's worked, reviews, everything. That's when I learned how much he specializes in DIEP flap reconstruction and microsurgery, which made me feel even more confident in choosing him. I also loved learning that he has a passion for art and uses that in his work--and honestly, it shows. He is incredibly talented and takes pride in what he does. For reference, I'm 5'3" and about 205 pounds, so if you're someone who's plus size and wondering how this surgery might go for you--I hope this helps ease your mind. Also--before surgery, I was a very small A cup. I actually joked with Dr. Gassman and told him, "I'm the president of the itty bitty titty committee, and if you can get me out of the committee, I would greatly appreciate it" Let's just say... I woke up from my first surgery officially out of the committee--whoop whoop! I had my first DIEP flap surgery on December 3, 2025. I want to share this part because I know it's something everyone worries about--pain. For that first surgery, Dr. Gassman used nerve blocks, and he is phenomenal at them. I actually didn't use any pain medication at all, which still surprises me looking back. The recovery itself was tough (as expected with a major surgery), but the pain control was handled so well. I just had my second surgery on March 20, 2026, and I was honestly nervous...but it ended up being so much easier. I didn't have nerve blocks that time, and it honestly just feels like I did a really intense workout--more sore than actual pain. That was a huge relief. My results are looking good so far, and I even got a new belly button and was able to lower my scar, which I'm super grateful for ! I also want to recognize Dr. Elmi, who performed my double mastectomy. I originally started this journey as a preventative measure, but after my first surgery, she sat down with me and gently explained that I did in fact have cancer. She took the time to draw everything out and explain exactly what type it was in a way I could truly understand. Even though I don't live in San Antonio, she made sure I was set up with care back home in Florida, which meant so much to me. Looking back, I laugh at my first impression--but I'm so grateful I trusted both of these doctors. They are not only highly skilled, but they truly care about their patients. If you are trying to make this decision, I hope my experience gives you a little peace of mind. You will be in very good hands.

The surgeons are masters of their craft -- meticulous, compassionate, and refreshingly human. The nurses and staff keep you informed, comfortable, and cared for every step of the way. I literally went to see Dr. Haug to get checked for a physical problem that I was worried about, NOT to be solicited for plastic surgery. I did not consent for my personal contact information to be used for advertising purposes. Also, she was terrible. No bedside manner. Rude and condescending. Constantly interrupted me. Assumed she knew what the problem was without listening to my description (and then didn't apologize for not listening even when it was clear that she was wrong).

She does NOT check simple things such as the lymph nodes in your neck to see if they're swollen. She does NOT run any tests or bloodwork, even in the middle of a pandemic. We had to request bloodwork for our daughter and she only met us back with a demeaning response and told us my daughter's scary acute sudden aliments were from stress. After said bloodwork results came in the doctor didn't look at them or communicate them to us for 8 days and then it was only in response to our calling multiple times requesting them. The nurse follows the doctors cues and speaks very condescendingly to patients. The bloodwork WE requested, and WE demanded showed concerning results in which we ultimately had to see a specialist per the guidance of a legitimate doctor at another practice in town. When none of the easy fixes to explain the blood work results applied to my daughter (and I had evidence of why they weren't the cause) the nurse told me she wouldn't talk to me anymore because I was only wanting to argue instead of accept her two textbook answers. The doctor herself NEVER once helped us, or interacted, or communicated with us after the only visit in which she didn't even truly examine my daughter. Again, run far far way from this doctor. I read that she mainly works with geriatric patients, and that is scary, because she can be negligent with them but their deaths could mistakenly said to be from old age, when really it was from the incompetent doctor.

I can't believe I spent so much time in pain and healing only to see little to no results. Even my friends of many years have not noticed any results. Now I will have to pay to have them redone. I was a bit concerned when he showed pictures of patients with only minimal improvements, and should have looked for another doctor then. I am now among those patients who he did little for. He seemed unconcerned that I wanted to lift the upper brow line too. It seems he relies on his staff to do fillers instead of long term corrections. I also had lip filler done, and again, very little in discernible improvements. Most fillers last longer than 2 months. I was not impressed by those either. In all, this is a definite No Return for me. I will turn to Houston or Austin surgeons for future work.

So if you are on the fence about this, go see what she can do, I promise you won't regret it. Thank you to everyone in the Boerne office! Especially, Dr. Joey!

I chose Dr. Reid after a lot of research on doctors that had experience with the type of skin that has been "almost ruined" (my own words) from being stretched so much from weight and also doctors that managed pain well, because I'm a big baby! Dr. Reid also is incredibly warm and friendly, in addition to being BRILLIANT! When you're looking into plastic surgery of any kind you initially go "good Lord that's expensive", BUT... I will say this, you're going to see those nurses and that surgeon SO MANY times post-op and not be charged any more. They will answer emails and phone calls to calm you down and fit you in same day if you're experiencing any kind of concerns and just want them to take a look. I've never healed as well from anything... not even a paper cut, as well as I have from this surgery. I know Dr. Reid uses a special fancy pants cutting tool that aids in healing better, and wow...I can tell. I also highly recommend you ask for the information of the private nurse that you can hire to take care of you after surgery. If I hadn't done that for the first 24 hrs my family would have been sooo overwhelmed. They can get you her info, I don't want to give it out, as she's a separate business, but this just shows how much they care about the success of their patients...by offering extra support that can help you. Their office also is a big fan of lymphatic massage, which I'm all in for. They have a person on staff that does it and I think she helped my healing a ton as well! I still have a long way to go, as this type of surgery has long term swelling, but I've come so far. I can't say enough wonderful words about this team. They are amazing, kind, and exactly what I was looking for. When you're visiting doctors to find the right fit, give Dr. Reid a shout, you won't regret it, he and his team are wonderful!
