I don't think these are legitimate reviews. I will keep this short, feel free to message me directly with questions. Dr, Byun is nice but I was left with a permanent scar on my face. Spoke to other medical professionals and they told me it was because he didn't stitch it tight enough. Makes sense because right when I got in the car blood was literally dripping down and out of my face and I thought it was normal for some reason.. it wasn't. Ever since I got the surgery I told him something wasn't right but then I was charged again for him to fix what he messed up. Even tho I told him the next day after surgery. Also I was completely over charged. Should have shopped around more or talked to more people because my cousin was charged half the price for the exact same surgery and when I asked other surgeons afterwards, they told me it should have be half the price I paid. Unfortunately I got ripped off and have a permanent scar on my face. I tried emailing them but no response so unfortunately I'm left leaving this bad review. I have on very few occasions written a review. However, I want to share my story and my experience for all of you searching for a Plastic Surgeon. Twenty seven years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation. From a couple of my other doctors, I was referred to a Dr. Frank Madda; a brilliant plastic surgeon, now retired; he placed my original implant and lifted the other for symmetry. Fast forward 27 years. I found that my implant needed replacement and another lift and tuck to make them symmetrical again. Gravity had taken its toll. After explaining my situation to Dr. Madda, he said, "I have a guy for you, Dr. Michael Byun. This is who you are going to see. He is a brilliant Plastic Surgeon. He will take the time to listen and educate you as to what he can do with what you have based on what your breasts have been subjected to." My first office visit, he and his lovely, very competent staff, spent an hour and a half getting to know one other and discussing the possible realistic outcomes. I never felt rushed. I learned so much from them. Dr. Byun is funny and has a wonderful "bedside manner". He is very personable and has an easy manner. It is apparent he is very passionate about what he does and is very professional. He and his staff made me feel comfortable and assured me that I have a safety net and could reach out to them at any time for any reason. I fell in "love" with Dr. Byun when he said, "You are my patient for the next 30 years. We are a team." For those of you who have or are contemplating writing a negative review or feel that you "didn't get what you wanted", I would ask you to consider this: were/are your expectations realistic? Did/do you have previous surgeries making your surgery more complicated because your tissue was less than optimal? (Like mine.) Dr. Byun has 30 years experience and will do the best with what is presented to him. As patients it is our responsibility to AVOID getting your information from social media and/or other media outlets. In my opinion, this will only set you up for unrealistic expectations. STOP chasing perfection and criticizing the outcome because you felt that 95% better was not good enough. To be able to understand what limitations you bring, and to appreciate whatever the outcome because it will be better than what it was. I can say this because Dr. Madda did not give up on me and sent me to someone who also considered and understood ALL of my history in order to perform a safe and effective surgery. He has given me his promise to share his expertise, as Dr. Madda did, for the next 30 years. This is priceless coming from two honorable and gifted surgeons. I am a retired teacher. I have always asked my students before posting anything to determine: Is this helpful. Have you consider all views different from yours? Is the reason you want to post valid? Are you posting from intellect or emotion? I think this is a good exercise for all those considering posting and the possible ramifications of doing so. It may appear to some that he maybe a bit on the expensive side but there is no doubt he is worth his cost. He is the best. Unitedhealthcare originally deemed my surgery as "cosmetic" and not "medically necessary". Although Dr. Byun's office does not take insurance, he and his staff worked with me to submit any information required to review the procedure. If you are having problems with your insurance, I recommend you try to get a "Gap Exception" and/or a "Proficiency Exception". (I'm sure other insurances have something similar.) These two exceptions allowed UHC to change Dr. Byun's status from "Out-of-network" to "In-network". Whatever they reimburse, it will be better than nothing at all. Then, what is the point of insurance? Bottom line, do not take your insurance's first determination, be persistent. Their job is to deny, deny, deny. There is always someone higher in the ladder you can appeal to. Because of the time Dr. Byun spent with me pre-surgery and his beautiful design on how he was going to shape both of my girls, I am so thrilled with my results. I'm not sure how i can be, but I am sure I will be even more so, after the healing is complete. I appreciate how he and Lauren took the time to explain what and, more importantly, why he did what he did and what my responsibility is for best recovery: Relax. Take it easy. Sure. Not easy for me. Extremely pleased with Dr. Byun and staff. I wasn't a face self care person, no sunscreens or wrinkle creams etc. Since menopause hit, my consequences were becoming very noticeable. Age spots, disgusting wrinkles, crepey skin, etc Dr. Byun spent lots of quality time with me explaining my options and educating me. I saw before and after photos of other patients, which clearly proved Dr. Byun's artistic genius! I was given a treatment plan which was comfortable for ME. Review of Michael Byun, MD First of all, don't be taken in by the hype that Dr. Byun is "Chicago's Best Plastic Surgeon". It is Dr. Byun who has attached that moniker to him self and not one that has been bestowed upon him by his peers or anyone else. From the first consult he promotes himself as being in a league unto himself but he is, in reality, a mediocre surgeon at best. I recently had a facelift performed by him at considerable expense, particularly for a working woman, paying completely out of pocket. The recovery was very difficult and I reached out a couple of times for support from Dr. Byun. His responses to me were not only abrupt and uncaring but downright shaming and insensitive. It is as if he were blaming me for the difficult time I was having. My eyes were so sensitive to light I could barely stand it. I sent him a photo I had taken of the gaps in my lower eyelids. He scolded me for "looking downward" in the photo, as if I were ruining his work. Crazy. Here's how the conversation went: Hi Dr. Byun, This is a photo of the way my lower lids are puckering. I had a breast augmentation done on June 2, 2021 and couldn't be HAPPIER with the results. The most difficult part of my recovery so far has been the tape and packing that they initially place post surgery and making myself rest. Once they removed the tape and bandaging, I felt like a new woman! Dr. Byun was incredibly educational and thorough during the first consultation. I had an appt with Dr. Michael Byun Aug 2020, to get a Kenalog 40 Shot for which I was told I will need about 3-4 shots and each will cost me $750 per session. Innocently, I went ahead with the appt and got the first shot for which I paid $750. I subsequently spoke with other plastic surgeons (both in the Chicago area, Atlanta and New York) who have told me that the Kenalog 40 shot cost ranges between $50 - $200 per shot. I reached back out to the Dr. Byun to ask why I was being charged such a high amount. At first I was told that was their cost and subsequently the doctor and his team became unresponsive. I left a message with his office saying I was going to let the world know that he is a fraud and that he should refund me my monies. Nothing!!!!! I did not receive a call back from the Doc or his team and so I went ahead and posted my negative review. Today, I just got a call from the doctors assistance asking if I was coming for my next appt which is tomorrow 9.24.2020. Of course I replied no! She then proceeded to tell me that they was a misunderstanding about my sessions and that my next Kenalog shot was to be part of the $750 that I had paid. I responded saying that I was told, via an email sent from the doctors office on their fees, that the Kenalog 40 shot was $750 per shot. So, I have this in writing. I went further to say that have already gotten my second shot from another plastic surgeon (Affiliated with Northwestern Hospital Downtown Chicago) and was charged only $200 for it. Also, two shots at a rate of $200 will come to only $400 which is still much higher than the $750 I had paid. The caller then proceeded to tell me that the additional amount I paid was for the doctor's expertise and experience. I responded saying that was *bullsh*t. The doctor that gave me my shot was also certified and experienced and only charged me $200 (expertise and drug inclusive). She returned, that unfortunately there is nothing else that she can do and I can do whatever I want. So, I have taken the time to write this review to let everyone know about this doctor and his practices. This is malpractice to trick a patient to pay you such an amount for something that is way cheaper elsewhere. To not make good and fix the problem. I'm sorry but Dr. Michael Byun is not a good person and definitely not an honorable one. We all need monies but we all also work hard for our monies. so my message to the good doctor is .... My journey in restoring my face began in my late forties after my kids told me i looked angry. Looking  in a mirror again and again I realized I have started looking like my late grandmother. After years of wanting to get a lower blepharoplasty due to some very misfortunate genes I inherited, I finally decided it was time since I'm getting married in May. After having a few bad experiences with consultations in the past with other surgeons, I finally met my match. Dr. Byun has an amazing bedside manner and took the time to listen to me, very thoroughly explain my options and procedures, and wasn't at all pushy. These details are all very important to me as I am an operating room nurse and aesthetician. I had 2 options, one was to go inside my lower eyelid and do the lift (less downtime) and the other option was to go from the outside of my lower eyelid (much more downtime and way longer healing process). I chose the second option due to the severity of my under eye bags (as you can see from the pictures). Since I had so much excess skin it needed to be removed. It's the same concept as a tummy tuck, once the skin is so stretched out the only option is to remove it. Anywho, Dr. Byun made the entire process as smooth free as possible especially since I was panicking about my eyes not healing in time for my wedding. I had the surgery done in January and the pictures I'm attaching are from April. There is still a little bit of swelling (especially my left eye) and my scars are still fading but my under eyes look AMAZING compared to how they were before. I've read that the under eyes can take the longest to heal, up to a year before they completely settle. They have already healed a tremendous amount and every day they look better and better. Dr. Byun has gone above and beyond to meet with me several times after the surgery to make sure my healing process is going smoothly. He gives you under eye exercises to do to make sure your eyes settle nicely. Make sure you do them! Trust me, they help! So here are the pros and cons of my journey... Pros: Dr. Byun and his staff are the best! They truly cater to you and make sure the entire process start to finish is exceptional. Cons: The healing process is a little stressful when you choose to do it right before a huge event (this was my fault). But again, Dr. Byun has done a great job at easing my stress. I also recommend taking an entire week off work after the surgery as you will be very swollen with blacks eyes but they go away quickly if you follows the postop instructions. Over the course of 15 years or so I have had about 5 procedures with Dr Byun. The most recent was an upper Bleph. He was very explicit on what I should and shouldn't not do to achieve the best results. I am an operating room nurse and do understand the healing process of the body a bit more than the average person. He gives patients instruction on not looking up with upper eye lid surgery, for example, because he just placed sutures and he doesn't want the work or sutures disrupted. Also you do not want to overwork the muscle that he is trying to lift up to give you that more awake look. The instructions that he gives are important and should not be taken lightly. He wants you, the patient, to have the best results. As I'm sure any patient wants. I'm only a week out and so far so good. I'm still swollen but that's expected. I'm excited for the end result holds. I'm patient and will listen to and obey his instructions like a good patient should. Results do not happen over night. He has always made me feel important and conscious of what my desires are. I wouldn't have anyone do any face work on my but him. This review is for the downtown Chicago office location and the two appointments I've had there: My skin has always been a concern of mine. I had acne as an adolescent and I continue to have a pimple or two here and there each month. I am unfortunately not one of those who are blessed with beautiful, porcelain Asian skin. Even though this was only my second time getting the chemical peel, I can already feel and see a difference with my skin. My first visit was a consultation with Dr. Byun and he listened to my concerns and provided me with some great feedback. I like that he offered to set-up a plan for improving my skin and he explained the process to me. I would have to say that this kind of education and information is important for any patient, because we typically want to achieve immediate results. And while there were immediate results, you also want to look in the long-run and make sure to maintain and continue with, in my case, nice skin. I already set-up my next two appointments and I can't wait to continue my treatment plan with Dr. Byun. It's pretty easy to set-up an appointment -- they really try to work with your schedule. It's great that they have two locations, even though he's only at the Chicago location once a week. It's still better than only being in the Northbrook office. He is lucky to have an amazing staff -- everyone that I interact with is super friendly and kind. Nicole, the manager, is very professional and helpful. The aesthetician was very friendly and even explained what she was putting on my skin and what it was used for. I want to look my best - don't we all? I exercise, diet, keep up with the latest in skin care and beauty trends. So when it comes to finding a cosmetic surgeon I want the best too. I mean, it's pretty damn close to permanent and there is absolutely no way I'm going to leave the fate of my appearance with just anyone! Over 10 years ago, I spoke with several doctors regarding a cosmetic procedure. Not a single one of them took the time to explain process. Not a single one - other than Dr Byun. He never made me feel rushed. He never suggested additional work, in fact he talked me out of a rhinoplasty I've wanted since my teens. And he took the time to explain the science behind everything, each step and why one method would be better than another. He's not just a surgeon, this man is an artist. 10 years ago I chose Dr Byun end never regretted it. 10 years down the road I find myself ready for another procedure, and once again, did my due diligence of talking to several surgeons and once again, Dr Byun comes out ahead in each and every way. I contacted one clinic where the consultation was conducted over the phone with an assistant. Wrapping up the call, the assistant asked if she could book my surgery the following week. Flabbergasted with both the timing and the lack of doctor at the consultation, I asked her if I would meet the doctor before my procedure and she responded with "you'll meet him day of. I can take your payment for the surgery whenever you're ready." Hold up. DAY OF??? What if I'm not a suitable candidate for the surgery I want? (spoiler alert: I wasn't suitable for part of it). What if I'm not comfortable with the doctor himself? After all I will be unconscious and nakey around him. Why haven't you asked about any of my medical history and medications? And why is this doctors schedule so open? Even my tattoo artist has a 3 month wait list. This clinic was ready to see you ASAP. Was it cheaper than Dr Byun? Absolutely. Am I glad I didn't go? Also absolutely. I find it ironic how, in the pursuit of improvement or perfection we can be so quick to gloss over the safety and quality of results in favor of cheaper and faster procedures. Do yourself a favor, research your doctors, research the procedures, ask all the right questions and ask your doctors to show you their work. Not just after the surgery but months down the line. Remember that this is something fairly permanent and if it seems too good to be true it is. And if you're too busy/tired/lazy to research, I've done it for you. I received a blepharoplasty early February 2013 and I waited this long to write a review because I wanted to comment on the final results and be thoughtful to all of you who rely on these reviews to try to make informed decisions. I could not be happier with my decision to go with Dr. Byun, and nearly everyday my friends are still saying "aren't you glad you went to Dr. Byun and got this done" and they tell me that my eyes look great. The truth is, my eyes looked pretty good even just one month after surgery, but Dr. Byun told me it would take about 6 months to see the final product and he was right. These eyes look perfect, natural, I am just so pleased with him. They look like they did when I was young, only they might even look better. :). He was just spot on with the shape, I am so impressed with him. I have been a patient of Dr. Byun's for going on two years, and will remain a life-long patient of his. Dr. B. came highly referred to me after I was attacked by a dog and suffered severe facial injuries, specifically on and around my nose. It was clear I needed not only a gifted plastic surgeon, but someone who deeply understands trauma as well as the face. The only person for this job is Dr. B. His comprehensive background made him uniquely poised to take on my case. And his skill level is beyond impressive. After all of the damage my face experienced, I am constantly told that those signs of trauma are no longer or barely visible. How do I begin to review a doctor who quite literally saved my smile? Last February, I had a horrible fall and my mouth hit a jagged chunk of ice on the sidewalk. I had split my top lip completely in half up to my nose and also had a cut on my bottom lip. The hospital sent pictures to Dr Byun who said he would see me that day even though he was at his downtown office in and out of surgeries. I went from the ER straight to his Northbrook office and waited for him to see me there. He could have told me to wait until the following day when he would be in that office, but he didn't do that. You see, after seeing the pictures of my face, he knew how important it was to see me and do the surgery that day which turned into night. He meticulously stitched both my upper lip inside and out up to my nose (27 stitches). He also stitched my bottom lip (6 stitches) which I didn't know I even needed done. I never thought of a plastic surgeon other than for a facelift or nose job. Boy, was I wrong. I'm writing this review to let you, the public, know that most plastic surgeons aren't on call at the ER or paid a penny from the hospital to consult and see those that need them or REQUEST THEM as I did that day. I went to Dr Byun to treat the wrinkles across my forehead and a frown line that was developing. Even though I was in my early forties, my face (especially my eyes) had aged significantly over just a couple of years. I attended the event "Summer Night Out with Dr. Michael Byun" on July 20th, 2012 at the Peninsula Hotel which brought in more than 300 people including vendors and patients. As an entrepreneur with clients in the organic skin care industry, it would be bold to openly express positive remarks to strengthen the invasive surgery industry. First, I just want to say what an amazing, kind hearted, SKILLED surgeon Dr.Byun is! I had a septorhinoplasty performed by Dr. Byun 2 1/2 months ago and the results are amazing!! Not only did he fix my breathing issue but he gave me a smaller, straighter nose! He informed me every step of the way of what he was going to do and NEVER displayed "diva like attitude ". I will proudly post my photos but I just had to defend my surgeon. I plan on going back to him for other surgeries because I trust him and have experienced first hand his incredible talent. I am 2 1/2 months post op and I'm still healing!! For that one reviewer to post her photos while she is still healing from her facelift is very misleading and deceptive. Katelyn D, I was very disturbed by your review of Dr. Byun. I have had work done by him for many years. I can't imagine what I would look like if he were not my surgeon. As someone who has had their eyes done, my question would be, were those pictures taken within weeks or a month of surgery? During the healing process that is how my eyes looked but they certainly tightened up after healing.Did you have any previous eye surgery by a different doctor. My friend had those eye issues during the healing process but they resolved themselves. I would hate to have someone misled by those photos. Is that eye droop a photo of your now? I can't imagine that was not while you were healing. I read the email Dr. Byun sent to you. Those were the same instruction I had. Frankly, they were very helpful. Perhaps you did not follow his instructions. That could be frustrating for a doctor. I would hate for someone to read your review and miss out on a doctor that does pristine work. Dr. Byun helped me with a problem I was having with my wrist and did a great job. I have always had a bubble on my wrist that had just recently started giving me some pain, but Dr. Byun did a great job of taking care of this. One of the things I liked is he didn't just want to cut it right open and go from there like many doctors like to do now days. I felt compelled to write about my experience with Dr. Byun, so those who are looking to get any procedures done can make an informed decision. First, Dr. Byun advertises himself as a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, which is one of the biggest reasons why I chose him. Unfortunately for me, I found out AFTER the surgery that his certification expired in 2012. I don't know if he has renewed his certification between July 3, 2014 and August 7, 2014. Also, his claim as the best plastic surgeon on his website is misleading. A small image of his face is pasted on a local magazine page along with a sea of other advertisers claiming to be the best of whatever their specialties may be. The text that follows his claim "best plastic surgeon" says "It's essential to have a rock star plastic surgeon you can completely trust, and Dr. Byun is your go-to-guy." Verbatim. Nowhere on the page indicates who, where and how those claims are substantiated. My own experience with Dr.Byun and one of his staff members, Nicole, was the most unprofessional and insulting experience yet in 40 years of my life. I sought out Dr. Byun about 2 months ago because I started noticing a bit of sagging on my cheeks causing a slight shadow on the side of my nose. Also the corner of my eyes had started drooping a bit. The initial consultation went very well. He appeared to have listened and understood my concerns. He recommended a mid-face lift which he said will take care of the folds on the sides of my nose. He did mention that I will still see it, but it will be very slight, which was fine. He also said he will address the sagging corner of my eyes by lifting them from the forehead. He sold himself well, and in spite of the exorbitant estimate ($18,900 - almost twice as much as 3 other doctors I consulted with), I decided to go for it. After about 6 weeks post -surgery, the swelling was down enough for me to really see the results. I was very disappointed because he did not address any of MY concerns that I sought him out for. If there were improvements, they were so minute that I could not tell what I paid $18000+ for. On my follow up, I respectfully asked him about the overall mediocre improvement of my face. He even acknowledged that he sees the unimproved cheeks and corner of my eyes I was pointing out. Things were okay until I started specifically asking what had been done to my face. He became very defensive and told me that whether I am satisfied with the results or not, IT IS TOO BAD because HE thinks it turned out well and has not regrets. I wish I was joking, but these are the words he used. Then, he got up and walked out of the room. Before he was out the door, I told him this was so unprofessional and that I, the patient, has an absolute right to ask questions. Then he, extremely condescendingly, said, even if I explain to you, you would not understand. I will give you a copy of my report. Then he was gone. I was incredulous. To make the situation worse, after being left alone in the room for 3 or so minutes, one of his staff members, Nicole, entered the room and handed me the doctor's note. I told her that I cannot believe he just walked out on his patient, but she was trying to imply that I must have done something wrong for him to do that. I couldn't believe what she was insinuating! When I told her that for $18,000+ price tag (I paid cash), patients deserve better than that. Then she said that the money had nothing to do with it. What??? I told her that money has A LOT to do with it especially when it's twice as more than 3 other doctors' quotes. All she said after that was "yes, he is expensive". She stated that once the doctor calms down, she will talk to him and call me on the following business day. It's been 3 weeks without any contact from his office. One more thing - I was told from each doctor that I consulted with, including Dr. Byun, that the incisions will be made along the hairline where they will not be visible. Two of the incisions Dr. Byun made on me are in the front side of my ear where they are clearly visible. They are permanent scars that do not seem to fade as of yet. I also brought this up during the follow up. He stated that I was told about it - referring to that area with medical term I was not familiar with. I'm not a doctor, it is his responsibility to make sure his patients clearly understand. From my experience, he has a 'god' complex where he thinks he can do no wrong. Rather than listening to the patients' needs and using his skills to execute them the best he can, he does what HE thinks is best and patients are to live with it. How can a doctor like that be voted the best??? If you are serious about the result and the quality of care you get from the doctor and the staff you pay exorbitant amount of money for, do your research before choosing this doctor whose board certification expired two years ago! read more
