Beef noodle soup
Alex W.

Their beef noodle soup is pretty good. If I recall correctly it was quite spicy even at mild spice level.

Absolutely loved our experience! The interior is modern and clean while the service is very efficient. The servers were friendly and attentive, which is a nice treat in Chinatown. And the food - absolutely loved the food. We were served a cool, sweet bean tea and pickled cabbage upon sitting. Then ordered the house beef noodles and pork dumplings. House Beef Noodles - 5/5 The meat was incredibly tender, the spice level was just right (got the extra hot) and the noodles were just the right texture and bounce (had a nice bite to it). Pork Dumplings - 5/5 Loved the sauce on this. The chili sauce was sweet and spicy and savory. The dumplings were tender and the wrappings had a good chewy texture. Overall, would recommend and return.

Spicy numbing beef soup

First time trying this spot. Came during lunch specifically for the beef noodle soup. I came right after the lunch buzz. There were only 4 other tables eating, so it was relatively quiet. But the two servers were great. Gave complementary tea and kimchi. I decided to order the spicy numbing beef soup. Yes it was spicy. Yes I was sweating. But I will be going back for this!

Mian appears modest and unassuming from the outside, but once you enter, a sleek, modern interior awaits. Since my roommates & I arrived on a Monday evening, it was quieter. A server came to bring us cold mung bean tea, and our appetizer was a spicy, pickled cabbage salad, so incredible... We then took our orders through their QR code. It was a bit tricky to follow their ordering system, and there was a slight mix-up when differentiating between the "Add to Cart" and "Submit" buttons. I had ordered the Mapo Tofu noodles, but my roommate accidentally deleted them from the list of items because she didn't realize it was my order. When each person in the party makes an item selection, it's considered an order for the entire table, not for the individual customer, which is why there was confusion. :( Despite technical difficulties, the food came out quickly, and it was a 10/10 across the board! - Huazing Fried Egg Noodles, more spicy, extra green onion, and less oil: (5/5) Delicious... the spice was not overwhelming, and a slight sour/acidic taste came from the tomato broth. I appreciate that there was an option to request less oil, as Sichuan places can sometimes get carried away in that department. Because of this, I was able to enjoy the broth more! - Pork Dumpling, extra green onion, less oil, and more spicy: (5/5) The pork dumpling was soft and had a chewy, gummy texture on the outside, and the chili oil they put on top packed a PUNCH. Nothing I couldn't tolerate, but wow, did it hit; additionally, there was a subtle sweetness. I'm sad I missed out on the chance to try their Mapo Tofu noodles, but it just incentivizes me to make a comeback to Mian!

For the peeps who love spicy, either mala, numbing, green peppercorn-y, MIAN is the place to go. I came by myself last weekend when the weather suddenly turned freezing cold for some hot soup and I was super satisfied, the noodles warmed my soul. Upon entering, you see a well decorated modern chinese noodle street cafe style. Place can be little more well lit in my opinion, will definitely give a more visual impact on their food too. They offer contactless ordering using QR code which is helpful so I didn't feel rush on deciding what I want, especially when they got so many options! Service was fast and friendly, the server reminded me of the hot bowls when they served me the food. I ordered the steam egg and house spicy beef noodle but sub the regular noodle for rice noodles. The steam egg came in a really cute cup, it's one of those that I remember my grandpa would drink water or hot tea out of it back when I was little. It's a very nostalgic and touching grass item haha the egg itself is super qq like jello, and well flavored by the minced pork and sauce on the top. The beef noodle was also really good. I ordered medium spicy and it was good, it had a perfect kick of mala spicy on my tongue every bite, they give a lot of beef too, good tender chewiness. The rice noodle was cooked al dente, not my preference but I let it seep in the soup for a while and slowly got softer to eat. Overall this is a good spot to get some hot noodle soup on a cold day. They got non spicy options too!

Mian in Houston definitely hits the spot when you're craving hand-pulled noodles with some spicy intestines. The texture of the noodles was perfectly chewy, and the broth had that deep, spicy richness that keeps you sipping. The portions were generous, and the spice level was just right, I always get the more spicy option and it's enough to make your nose run but still flavorful. Service was quick and friendly, though the place can get crowded, so expect a short wait during peak hours.

Dumplings
Lisa Z.

What an incredibly efficient, super yummy little noodle/dumpling shop! The beef noodle soup was incredible - the soup reminded me of the ones from Taiwan and had a fair amount of beef chunks. The chili garlic dumplings were very good - although, be warned, there is a good amount of heat in the sauce. I've got a good spice tolerance and still sweated through my meal. They also have complimentary pickled cabbage and sweetened tea that they bring to each table that is just so good! Service is super fast and you can order via the contactless menus on the table. Overall, fantastic place for carbs and would def be back!

Keisha R.

Really good! We had the traditional beef noodles and the braised ribs noodles. The meat was super tender. The broth super flavorful and spicy. Noodles perfectly cooked. The food came out quick and staff is on it with the tea refills. The inside was clean and it eventually got pretty full of people but staff stayed on top of helping customers.

Mian is top tier in sichuan noodles, meeting some of my highest standards for taste, portion size, service, and price. They also make ordering super easy with an online menu that you can place orders directly from your phone on! And there's complimentary, endless red bean tea and pickled spicy vegetables while you're waiting for your food and enjoying the cute themed interior. I've gotten several different types of noodles, including the zajiang noodles, spicy house beef noodles, and hot and sour noodles (my absolute favorite) - EVERY bowl has me thinking about Mian for days afterward. I've been here several times, and I 100% will be back!

The food was great and the service was just as good. Very cool spot to sit down and enjoy lunch or dinner. Definitely a place I'd come back to.

Pork dumplings
Cynthia E.

I love Mian! They have the best dumplings. My favorite are the chili oil dumplings, and the pork dumplings. The pork dumplings sauce has kind of an almost sweet spiciness to it. I also feel like there's maybe cinnamon or different kinds of spices that they put in with the dumpling sauce. It's so delicious!

Absolutely delicious! These Sichuan noodles were everything I needed and more. (Thank to my amazing boyfriend for this hidden gym) The flavors were bold, rich, and perfectly balanced with just the right amount of heat. Every bite felt comforting and satisfying -- the kind of dish that warms you from the inside out. On a cold winter night, this bowl was pure soul-soothing magic. If you're craving something flavorful, comforting, and truly unforgettable, these Sichuan noodles are it. Highly recommend!

Clear broth beef noodle
Grace P.

This is a solid noodle place!! I had the clear broth beef noodle, and I was surprised by how rich the broth was. It was similar to the Korean gomtang broth. I generally like my dishes plain so I enjoyed it a lot. Most of my friends love the beef noodle soup, which I will definitely try next time! Service was pretty quick, and the place was packed during lunchtime.

We had quite a bit of leftovers and couldn't get anyone to come over for to-go boxes or the check I ended up having to go to the front to ask. Overall, great food and a good experience, but they definitely need more staff if it's consistently this busy.

I'm always a sucker for all things Sichuan style, in fact it's my favorite style of Chinese cuisine, however after receiving the first order , the Chefs Special Beef Tripe, I should have stopped there. Although it was clearly tripe, it looked nothing like the picture online, and was overly pickled and extremely numbing of taste to the point of not being able to enjoy or even get a remote grasp of a flavor profile. Well, as to not give up on them entirely, I went ahead and ordered something more middle of the road , by getting the twice cooked pork. Something I figured they couldn't mess up.. Well it was BEYOND bland without seasoning or favor at all, even inspite of the fresh ingredients that it contained. The pork was not tender and the overall dish just simply uninspiring. The two stars were for service and ambience. So very disappointing.

She emphasizes few ingredients that complement and highlight each other. Above all else is technique. The knowledge to know which vegetables are in season, the perfect time to poach fish, infusing oil with the correct about of peppercorns and aromatics takes years of practice. What I find surprising is how Mala Sichuan Bistro scaled out their restaurants with the same quality, crispiness, and consistency across all locations. The MKT location has the most beautiful interior, which is why I choose to go there. If Mala told you the crispy chicken seasoning was only 4-5 ingredients, would you believe it? Chinese cooking is about letting one ingredient shine in the spotlight with the supporting actors complement one another. My love for cooking started with the spicy crispy chicken. The crunch, the numbing from the peppercorns, the push and pull between sweet and salty. The oil to fry the chicken and the oil to dress the chicken afterwards creates a masterpiece that I have not been able to replicate at home nor have I found any other restaurant in America with the same caliber. The dry pot fish melts in your mouth with its delicate batter. The lotus root is crunchy while the cauliflower soaks up the delicious sauce. Compared to the water boiled fish, this dish is my new favorite coming into here. For the avid regulars of Mala Sichuan, I challenge you - Order something a little out of your comfort zone every time you come. Trust that the chefs have years of knowledge and the sample size for refining dishes almost 4x ours. If survival of the fittest makes the restaurant business cutthroat here, imagine the caliber of dishes that exist in China. Mala Sichuan didn't invent these dishes, it came from generations of testing, iterating, and feedback from their customers. They have high chairs if you bring a little one. Overtime, we've tried a lot of their menu, and our favorites are the mapo tofu (my husband's favorite), spicy and crispy chicken (although I wouldn't mind more mala), cumin lamb, sautéed seasonal vegetable, mala tofu pudding with fish fillet, fish cube with string bean bits, and eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. My toddler loves the food here and eats the fish cube with bean dish and seasonal vegetables, which are both not spicy. I would skip the Dan Dan noodles and anything with the "red oil," which are on the greasy side and less flavorful. The crab meat and asparagus soup was also lackluster and tasted like the base is from a ready made packet. The chestnut chicken stew was salty. If craving dry pot, I would opt for somewhere in Chinatown instead. We haven't had their drinks and never have room to try their desserts, although their crepe cakes always look so good. This is a solid choice if you are in the M-K-T area!
