I genuinely don't understand when walk-ins are actually accepted if an empty salon still requires an appointment. More importantly, I specifically asked for a cleanup. To me, that means removing the excess hair above and below my brows while keeping my existing shape. Instead, my entire shape was changed, including my arch and tails. That is absolutely not what I asked for, and I'm extremely annoyed because eyebrows take time to grow back. There also seemed to be a communication barrier. I had difficulty feeling confident that what I was requesting was fully understood, and unfortunately the end result confirmed that concern. If a client asks for a cleanup, please clarify exactly what they want before significantly changing the shape of their eyebrows. I've been a regular customer, which makes this even more disappointing. I came in expecting my usual cleanup and walked out with brows I did not ask for. The underside was waxed anyway. When I followed up, the owner explained that shaping is required with brow lamination and that avoiding the underside is not something they do because it does not meet their standards. My issue is that this was not explained to me before the service began. If my request could not be accommodated, I should have been told so I could decide whether to continue. I requested a refund, but it was denied because the service was completed and their policy says services are non-refundable. Overall, this was disappointing. For me, the issue was communication and feeling like a clear boundary I stated before the appointment was not honored.

I've been a loyal client for a couple of years now, typically visiting the Montclair location, where I've always had a positive experience. Today, I decided to try the Victoria Gardens location for the first time, and while the service started off well, things quickly took a disappointing turn. I realized I had forgotten my wallet and was attempting to contact my husband to send a photo of my card. Instead of offering understanding or assistance, one of the staff immediately assumed the worst, saying, "The card must match your name," implying I was trying to commit fraud. That comment alone was incredibly offensive and set a very uncomfortable tone. I then asked if I could step just outside the door because the music was too loud, and I couldn't hear my husband on FaceTime. Despite standing right in front of the door, an employee came over and asked me to leave something behind in case I ran off. That was both insulting and humiliating. Even though I tried to remain calm and composed, I could hear staff whispering and talking about me when I returned inside. The entire experience made me feel judged, unwelcome, and completely disrespected. I will no longer be returning to this salon not to Victoria Gardens, not even to the Montclair location I once trusted. It's unacceptable to treat loyal, paying customers this way. I'm deeply disappointed, and I'll be taking my business elsewhere permanently. read more

However, during my last several visits, I have become increasingly uncomfortable with something I have repeatedly observed involving another stylist with her child. One of the stylists routinely brings her infant, who is under a year old, to the salon while she works on clients. Clients and other workers have been asked to hold and care for the baby while the stylist performs their hair services. Even more concerning, the baby's diaper is being changed in the front reception area on the salon chairs where customers sit. I found this inappropriate and unsanitary for a professional salon environment. I am also genuinely concerned about the health and welfare of the baby. Hair salons routinely use chemical products, including hair color, bleach, smoothing products, aerosols, disinfectants, and other substances that can produce fumes and vapors. Having an infant spend extended periods of time in this environment while chemical services are being performed raises legitimate concerns for me about unnecessary exposure, particularly for a child this young. Given my legal background, I am also aware that California salons and licensed cosmetology establishments are subject to health and safety requirements, including requirements involving sanitation, chemical handling, and ventilation. The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology regulates licensed salons and establishes health and safety standards applicable to these establishments, while workplace exposure to certain chemicals also falls within the regulatory authority of Cal/OSHA. I get it, being a mom of a small child and having a job can be difficult. But there are much better and safer ways to go about this. My concern is with professional boundaries, sanitation, the experience of paying clients, and, most importantly, the health and welfare of this child. Clients should not be placed in the position of holding or caring for an employee's baby while receiving services, diapers should not be changed on reception furniture, and an infant should not be unnecessarily exposed for extended periods to an environment where chemical services are continuously being performed. I sincerely hope salon management takes these concerns seriously and establishes appropriate policies to protect its clients, employees, and this child. At the very least, I hope the child's health, safety, and welfare are placed first and foremost and this should be stopped immediately. If not for the child's sake alone, then to mitigate risk for the salon and any future potential legal or regulatory ramifications from these acts.

Little did he know my daughter does not look like me, is not the same race as me, nor does she have my same hair type. But he didnt stop to ask what type of hair she had. He made a host of assumptions and rudely and aggressively communicated them. He also assumed that the extra charge would be some kind of problem for me. I asked him to explain again because I couldn't figure out what point he was trying to make to which he said that he "cant have his girls going over into the next booking slot and he didnt want me to be surprised when they charged me extra". Again very aggressively, not polite, frankly it seemed like he didnt want me to book. I was a little taken aback so I turned to one of the ladies and asked her to just tell me what I need to do. I then booked what I had called for. And left but Immediately canceled when I got home because I just didnt like the vibe and attitude from that man. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I will NEVER go back.

Then, at approximately 12:30 PM today--only two hours before my appointment--I received another message saying my appointment had been canceled due to "unforeseen circumstances." This is now two appointments canceled by Madison Reed in the same week, both on the day of the appointment. As a brand-new customer, this is an extremely disappointing first impression. I understand that unexpected situations happen, but after the first appointment was canceled because Madison Reed overbooked the time slot, I would have expected the rescheduled appointment to be handled with more care. Customers are expected to respect appointment times and cancellation policies, and I believe that same consideration should be given to customers when the business cancels. I was genuinely looking forward to trying Madison Reed, but after rearranging my schedule twice only to have both appointments canceled at the last minute, I have very little confidence in booking another appointment.
