Yum! My daughter and I came here tonight after a playdate at the wonderlab. I ordered the chaufa (fried rice) mixto which has chicken, shrimp, and beef. It was delicious and the portion was ENORMOUS. The shrimp was juicy, cooked well. It was overall a really tasty dish and I would absolutely order it again. It also comes with a nice spicy creamy sauce on the side and they provided more free of charge as well when I asked and they gave a little container of sauce for my leftovers. My daughter had the macaroni and cheese (there's a kids menu on the right hand side of the menu which is a bit hard to see/read with white font letters on yellow). They also have chicken tenders. All of the kids menu items come with your choice of one side. We picked fries and the portion was very generous. They were on the soggier side but I like soggy fries so that was a plus for me. I ordered the lomo saltado for takeout with an Inca cola and my husband said it was good. The woman at the front was very personable and friendly and the restaurant was decorated with Christmas decorations including a cute white Christmas tree. They've got red Peruvian tablecloths on every table (the ones at the booths have a glass on top for easy cleaning). We actually started off at a 2 person table but moved because the tablecloth and chair moved around a lot (toddler problems). To quote the terminator, "I'll be back."

    Aji Gallina - Nov 2025

Efficient counter service, quick preparation. Interior is a bit shabby without any natural light coming in. Space probably has not been renovated since they opened 10+ years ago. Mi Peru has no website, so you can't tell what prices are until you show up at the restaurant. I ordered the Aji Gallina ($16.99 + 1.28 sales tax). A load of white rice, 3 white potato halves, probably only 3-oz shredded chicken breast. Garnish was skimpy - 1/2 of a boiled egg and a single kalamata olive. Tasted good and formed 2 meals for me. Peruvian food reminds me a lot of Hawaiian plate lunches. Good-tasting and filling (gobs of rice) for surfers, laborers, plantation workers. No fancy ingredients or cooking techniques.

Late lunch after Mother's Day weekend shopping with the family. Initially, we waited over 10 min for the server to even take our drinks. Given all of that time, we already knew what we wanted to order as entrees. Overall the food was good, averaging around 3.5 stars. They also offer patio seating, but we sat inside. I ate the ceviche.

I found Mi Peru Peruvian Cuisine on Yelp when searching for takeout nearby. At the time, this restaurant had a 4.5-star average rating with 158 reviews. I agree with that rating. The food and service were good to great. Mi Peru is located in a small shopping center (BB&T Plaza) behind Sam's Club and Target (South Square). It opened in 2014. It's a small, humble, casual restaurant. Along with a fairly spacious dining room inside, they have a narrow, uncovered, three-table patio outside. Online ordering is available through a link on Mi Peru's website at https://miperucuisine.com/. At the time I ordered, they used the Toast platform which I've grown familiar with. It's easy to use and I like that I can pay online so all I have to do at the restaurant is pick up my order. I checked the online menu for two days and both days, they were out of the Peruvian charcoal rotisserie chicken. Oh well. It was OK because there were plenty of other dishes for us to try and they all turned out to be delicious. When I checked the online menu a third straight day, the chicken was back in stock. Maybe I had bad luck. I hope to try it sometime. A whole chicken was priced at $20.99, half $12.99, and quarter $8.99. Those all include two large sides. I placed my order at 5:30pm on a Wednesday and it was ready for me by 6:00pm. When I arrived to the restaurant, the kitchen looked busy. There were three dine-in parties (two inside, one outside), one uncleaned table, and one party waiting for takeout in front of me. Here's what I ordered: * Ceviche de Tilapia ($15.99) - fresh raw diced tilapia marinated in lime juice, served with Peruvian corn, sweet potato, lettuce, and onions * Lomo Saltado ($15.99) - Peruvian-style beef stir-fry mixed with onions, tomatoes, cilantro, soy sauce, and served on fries and jasmine rice * Cau Cau ($12.99) - Afro-Peruvian tripe stew, seasoned with aji amarillo and turmeric * Aji de Gallina ($11.99) - pulled chicken breast cooked with a creamy aji amarillo sauce; served with sliced potato, sliced boiled eggs, olives, and white rice * Alfajores ($2.99 each) - Homemade Peruvian-style cookies with dulce de leche We enjoyed everything. At the top of the list were the Alfajores. They were incredible. Definitely order at least one per person. You won't regret it. These were some of the best cookies we've had anywhere. It's worth coming to Mi Peru for their cookies alone. The Alfajores just melted in our mouths. Each bite was sweet, buttery, and magical. No other way to explain it. Perfect texture and flavor. This was my first time ordering takeout ceviche and Mi Peru did a great job. The restaurant offers a few different kinds of ceviche: mixed, tilapia, and sea bass. I went with the tilapia version since I'm allergic to shrimp and the mixed version comes with shrimp along with mussels and other seafood. The Ceviche de Tilapia was excellent. It was fresh, colorful, and flavorful. It was so flavorful and zesty that we didn't need to squeeze the two lime pieces included. I enjoyed the big, soft pieces of Peruvian corn. Crispy, dried, roasted corn and a red spicy sauce were served on the side. Good stuff. I recommend this dish. Of the entrees (I consider the entree-sized ceviche above as more of an appetizer), the Lomo Saltado was my favorite. It was also my wife's favorite. This is a popular Peruvian dish and one of Mi Peru's most-ordered dishes. I believe the type of beef they used was sirloin. While the strips of sirloin were a *little* on the dry and chewy side, they were still high-quality and seasoned and flavored well. The other ingredients were fresh, and this was just an overall hearty and satisfying dish. You can't go wrong with it. I liked the Cau Cau more than my wife did, but I also like tripe more than she does. If you like tripe, I think Mi Peru's Cau Cau is worth trying. I likened this to a comfort-food-type dish along with the Aji de Gallina. Both were tasty stew or stew-like dishes, chockful of umami, and I couldn't stop eating them. That unpleasant tripe taste/odor in the Cau Cau was mostly non-existent (very subtle). The shredded chicken breast in the Aji de Gallina was tender and the sauce was creamy and scrumptious. All three entrees came with white rice which was soft, fluffy, and yummy. In addition, the entire order came with a complimentary side of Sarza which is sliced purple onion marinated in lime juice and served with chopped cilantro. It's like a salsa. It was the same stuff they served on top of the ceviche. Tangy and wonderful. Also included were two small cups of Huacatay sauce, a yellow sauce made with the same aji amarillo chili peppers that were used to make the creamy yellow sauce in the Aji de Gallina entree. I noticed these cost extra on the menu (listed under the sides) with Sarza at $2.99 and Huacatay sauce at $0.99. I'm not sure why I got them for free except maybe because I ordered several items. TL;DR - I consider Mi Peru a proverbial gem.

This restaurant is located in a shopping plaza with shared parking. The business has several tables and booths inside. It isn't really big. We went about an hour before they closed during the week and there were only a couple of other people inside. Our sever, Lucila, greeted us right away with menus. She was nice and helpful with the menu. I ended up ordering the rotisserie chicken, white rice and a side salad. The food came out fairly quick. The food was good and fresh. The chicken was seasoned well, flavorful and it was tender. The rice and side salad were also good. The salad was made with cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce and i opted for the balsamic dressing. I would definitely return and try some of their other dishes.

Came here with a group for a birthday dinner on a Saturday evening. Staff is friendly and helpful. The shrimp marinated in lime tasted fresh and the cilantro made for a nice mix of flavors. My husband ordered beef which was very tender and flavorful. Portions are great. Restaurant is very clean.

The perfect spot for your Peruvian fix! Came here for lunch on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to see that they have a patio with several tables. The patio is quite cute, decorated with hanging potted plants and tables shaded with umbrellas. We peeked inside and it seemed pretty clean, but the lovely weather convinced us to dine al fresco. My friend and I split the ceviche appetizer to start, which was fresh and light (note: Peruvian ceviche is not served with chips) and you can adjust the spice level to your liking (we asked for medium spice which honestly tasted very mild). For my entree, I opted for the lomo saltado. Perfectly cooked juicy beef, flavorful veggies, all served over a bed of crinkle cut fries and a side of rice. The sauce that came with it was absolutely delicious! It reminded me of a more citrusy chimichurri. The portion size of the dish was quite generous, but naturally your girl inhaled it all. Our server was Manuel and he was excellent - just the right level of attentive, and very straightforward about recommendations. I was a bit hesitant to order the lomo saltado (not sure if it's too "basic") but he reassured me that it would be very tasty - and he was spot on! Highly recommend this spot! Hope to come again soon.

I ordered ají de gallina. It was delicious but it should be called aji de papás. I got few chicken meat and 6 pieces of potatoes. My husband ordered pollo a la brasa... it was raw! Yes, raw chicken. The place was very clean with great music

Came here after the Durham Farmers Market with a friend and wow this place was a surprise. …read more I went with the grain bowl and honestly it is one of the best I have had in downtown Durham. It is built on quinoa and rice with black beans and kale, then layered with corn salsa, tomato cortido, guacamole, and a creamy acevichado style sauce that pulls everything together. It is finished with a crunchy mix of pepitas, nuts, and grains. The balance is quite ideal in my view. My friend had the rotisserie chicken with two sides, kale and slaw, and it was just as impressive. Crispy skin, juicy inside, and really clean flavors. Simple food done right and GF friendly. Everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Prices land right where you would expect for the quality, roughly 16 to 21 dollars depending on what you order, and it feels worth it. My bowl plus side of dark chicken was plenty. A few notes. Parking is what you would expect for downtown, so plan accordingly. Service was solid and friendly, but nothing that stood out. The vibe inside is festive and relaxed, bright and open, and just a fun place to hang out for lunch. Porbably not a special occasion. I also suspect it could get loud when full. This is definitely going into my regular rotation. That grain bowl is going to be hard to pass up next time, so instead of replacing it I will probably just add a side or an empanada and start working my way through the rest of the menu.

"Wonderful roasted chicken near Durham South Square"…read more I've loved the other two Durham Alpaca locations for years, but somehow never noticed this one, tucked back beside Chuck E Cheeses at what I think used to be a Boston Market building many years ago (and across the street from Sam's Club & Target). I was very impressed at the large outdoor seating area with the string lights-- looked very modern and inviting. I ordered takeout online, so I was only inside for a moment, but the restaurant was very new and clean. They had the typical area on the side for condiments, including their famous spicy green and milder yellow sauces (and little cups with lids for takeout). I ordered a quarter-chicken dark (always delicious) along with fries and rice & beans. The rice & beans had a 50 cent extra fee. My wife got the quarter chicken dark with fries and maduros (fried sweet plantains). The food was ready when I arrived, and I was handed it as soon as I said my name upon arrival. It was packaged in nice plastic containers-- not so great environmentally but they did keep the heat in and maintained the food well on the drive home. Everything was delicious as always. The chicken is always SUPER moist and tender and scrumptious, made even more amazing with some green & yellow sauce. Their fries are moist and tasty, and the rice & beans had a good flavor. My wife was happy with her food too. The price is really good-- right around $10 for the quarter dark meal deals, before tax and tip. And it's a good portion size overall, too... enough that you're not hungry after, but it's not "over the top" huge. I've always been a big Alpaca fan, and I'm glad to see them spreading to other locations with the same excellent food and fast/ easy service. One tip-- if you order takeout, use their website, not commercial ones like Uber Eats or Grubhub, so you can save a little money. I'm sure I'll be back-- loved the look of that outdoor area!

"Fresh local seafood"…read more I've come here a few times, so I was surprised to see I hadn't reviewed it! Saltbox started as a little shack near downtown but now occupies the place previously held by Shrimp Boats on 15-501 business between Guglhupf and Q-Shack. There are some outdoor picnic tables and several tables inside. I came most recently on a Saturday at 6:30pm. All the seafood here is super fresh, so the menu varies over time. I was excited this time to get crabcakes or scallops, but sadly, they ran out earlier in the day. Hence, I ended up with soft shelled crab platter (with potatoes and slaw), and one dining partner had a shrimp sandwich with the honey tots. The soft shelled crab was maybe the best I'd had, even though it looked a little odd-- super red and "squished". But it was VERY soft and flavorful. The potatoes and slaw were both excellent-- I liked the onions and peppers fried in with the potatoes, and the slaw was a nice vinegary rather than creamy slaw. I had one of my friend's tots, and WOW, those are good-- I'd get that next time. They loved their shrimp too-- I may go for that next time. Service was good-- we checked on our order at one point (see below), and the fellow remembered the name as well as being apologetic for the delay! The only negative-- it was maybe an hour from when we arrived 'til I got my platter. Some of that was the line, but a lot of it was just they were really busy and had a lot of orders (both dine-in and carry out).
