I remember the building when it was a nightclub. I've had it on my list to try the food and wasn't sure what to expect. My sis and I went before a show for dinner. Our waitress did not speak English, but we were able to communicate effectively, trying to pronounce Spanish, Google translate, and using hand gestures. We got Tortillas con Quesillo, Pastelitos and Baleada con Todo. The food was delicious... so good! It took a while to make, which is a hint to the freshness. It was a first intro to Honduran food and it was fabulous. The inside is simple with dinner type seating, a nice bar and a room with a pool table. I definitely recommend giving them a try. read more

I went today and ordered takeout, since I live in Chapel Hill and work here in Durham (NCSSM), and my wife does not drive. We got a beef entree and a shrimp entree. Wow. Incredibly tasty. Yeah, you want to try this place. Surprising tip: wine to accompany was a nice Macon, a white burg. It stood up well and complemented this very tasty food. Was in the mood for something different so I thought I would try this restaurant for a take out order...Love food from different parts of the globe and can't remember trying any from Honduras...I was quite pleased with the size of the orders and the prize wasn't too bad either in my opinion...Can't speak to the staff and the ambiance as it was a take out order but judging from other reviews, it seems they may have some authentic music there and it might be loud.....I actually love talking to people and hearing different sounds so can't say this would deter me but if I make it there I will let you know ...But as far as the food spot on ......Still have some leftovers that I will probably have for late night snack as the portions where very nice..... read more

"Honduran restaurant on Guess" It's been over 5 years since my original review, and they've now very recently moved to a new location (further north on Guess Rd, just south of Carver), so I wanted to go back and try this again for dinner. This definitely seems like a place for "regulars"-- it appeared a lot of people dining or drinking here knew each other. Sadly, I was disappointed overall. Positives: Some of the dishes we got were pretty good. Mine was tasty-- I don't remember the name, but it was a steak dish with carrots, zucchini, and tomato sauce, with sides of avocado, lettuce, beans, and fresh hot tortillas. It was tasty. Negatives: The music was playing ridiculously loud. Everyone in the restaurant was literally yelling in order to be heard. We asked that they turn it down, and they nicely did so slightly, but it was still uncomfortably loud even after that. Many dishes seemed not as good (in quality or in value) as when I visited last time. My son got a chicken quesadilla for over $10. It was fine, and came with some avocado slices, rice & beans, and lettuce, but that price is high for a "fine" quesadilla. The beans were meh-- tasted like refried beans from a can. My wife and daughter had cheese (queso) pupusas, but they were not nearly as good as at other places (e.g., El Cuscatleco, as Susan Z noted)... almost tasted like they had American cheese inside. Even my dish, which I liked, was good but I'm not sure it was $13 good. My recollection is that the portions in the past were huge, and prices were lower, but I did not think so in this visit. Service was spotty. Waitress was friendly. However, I didn't get my dinner until literally 30 minutes after my dining partners had finished their dinners. They were apologetic, but it should have been noticed and rectified much earlier than it was, but they really just didn't check on us almost at all. Even when I got my meal, I didn't get a knife, which made eating the steak pretty hard. Their credit card machine was down, but they didn't post a sign or tell us until we were paying... fortunately, we barely had enough cash. Synopsis: There are so many central American restaurants in Durham (some new, some which have been around for a while) that I don't think this place really competes, based on our experience tonight. read more

I'm giving five stars to offset the fact that some people are dinging this place for their loud music (see below for some context). As for the food, I give it a very solid four star rating. While they serve the typical dishes one could get at Mexican or Salvadoran places, it is the Honduran options that really shine, in terms of taste and price. The Baleadas were fantastic. They are like a fusion between a burrito and a quesadilla, served on a thick, handmade flour tortilla. And for $6, it was a great deal. The Honduran Enchiladas were also very tasty. They are nothing like a Mexican enchiladas, being more like a ground beef tostada topped with cabbage. (These also cost only $6!) The crab soup with coconut milk was savory and full of plantains and yuca. Really good portion for $13. Note on the loud music: Yes, the music is as loud as a club. Lol. I am Mexican-American, and parties in my family have always featured such loud music blasting into the ears of attendees. Growing up, I saw this as an important part of the festive atmosphere, and I imagine the owners of this restaurant are trying to achieve this sort of party atmosphere for their guests. Indeed, when I visited this restaurant on a Saturday night, some guests were getting up and dancing and having a great time. Having said that, I personally have never liked the sheer loudness of the music at my family's parties, and the same applies here. So if you want to avoid being uncomfortable but still want some awesome Honduran food, I would suggest either bringing ear plugs (which I do at home) or calling to order some food to-go. read more

Food was very good, but as other reviewers have said, it's very noisy. If you love jamming to some loud Mariachi while you eat, then you will be in heaven. I was also a little freaked out that a lot of the young men who came in had a metal detector wand passed over them and one was patted down. It was 6:30 pm on a Saturday. I'm not sure why the restaurant needs to check its customers for weaponry, but that's not something I'm accustomed to seeing. At least you know no one is packing (shrugs.) read more

The place looks simple but don't get that fool you, food is amazing and they prepare everything at the moment of ordering so I encourage you to order the food over the phone prior to go there. Pollo con tajadas or fried chicken with plantains it's their specialty and their baleadas which are handmade flour tortillas with refríed beans, egg, meat and chorizo are to die for. Tucked back off the road behind another business they were a delightful surprise in this time of Covid. I ordered the following for take out: pupusas with cheese and mixtas, chuletas, camarones rancheros and horchata. It was all quite tasty and the hand made tortillas were to die for. We are new to the area and were looking for a good place., so glad we found them. Reasonable prices, good portion sizes and a very nice owner. Large & cheap servings of simple, Honduran food. If you don't speak Spanish, try to go at hours when kids are out of school and you will be fine. Otherwise, bring a Spanish speaker (Stacy B!). They have an English menu, which I suspect has higher prices and more Americanized food, but whatever. I'm not an expert in Honduran cuisine, still tastes good! The place has TVs that play Spanish soap operas and a couple of pool tables that are pretty popular among the mostly Spanish speaking crowd (every time I've gone, my group has been the only non Spanish speaking group). After a string of disappointing restaurant experiences, I was thrilled with my meal here! Yes, the music is a few decibels too loud, but it's part of the atmosphere...so I quickly recalibrated my noise tolerance. If you're high maintenance about restaurants, you'll be annoyed. If you're used to letting go of expectations of how things "should" be done, or how things "should" look (a necessity in the developing world, or in poor areas of town), you'll be fine. The restaurant layout reminded me of many humble hangouts I visited during my time in Africa: a few small tables, a couple pool tables, and a bar with a fake thatched roof (inside). There were a bunch of people mingling by the bar. A TV in one corner was playing a soccer game. There were a couple of paintings of beaches, and the walls are painted bright blue. The tables were decorated with kitschy (but amusing) red fake roses and red hearts. Our first waitress didn't speak any English, and seemed dumbfounded that I didn't speak Spanish. Thankfully my dining companion was Spanish, and helped me out. We both got beers, then checked out the menu. I was impressed...it was extensive. There was a list of appetizers/sides on the first page, a list of breakfast items on the second page, a list of lunch/dinner entrees on the third page, and a list of soups on the back. There are English descriptions of the main dishes, which thankfully helped me out. I went with the Cena Hondurena (described as a typically Honduran dish), and my Spanish partner-in-crime got a beef soup (the first item listed on the back page...I don't recall the name in Spanish). We also got a queso pupusa. The food took some time to arrive, but once it did, I was a bit overwhelmed by the massive plate. My dish came with a big mound of buttered rice, a big slice of steak, scrambled eggs, a quarter of avocado, beans, cheese, butter, plantains, AND a separate container of house-made tortillas. Spanish guy's soup was a massive bowl chock full of beefy goods. The pupusa was about the size of a small frisbee. Everything was DELICIOUS. Oh my gosh, those tortillas were the best I had ever tasted. The plantains were sweet and slightly crispy and tender. The beans were fantastic. The meat was crispy and delicious. Ahhhhh. I can't remember the last time I had such happy-making food. Tried Spaniard's soup, and the broth was similarly tasty. The pupusa was yum, and came with a nice relish and red sauce. There was also a welcome selection of little hot sauce bottles. I tried a bunch of them, and they were all amazing and super hot (my favorite was the neon green one). When eating Latin food, I'm not happy until my tongue is burning. Our first waitress disappeared, and we were visited by a second waitress who spoke English and chatted with us a bit. So...there is a chance you'll get an English speaking waitress here. *grin* If the vibe at this place genuinely represents its food, people, and spirit, I will definitely get my ass to Honduras. The Queso Pupusas were excellent (I really liked the saurkraut-like stuff they served with it, the right honorable Paul. B. can school you on the DC pupusa scene), as was this other Honduran thing I hadn't had before - a "Baleada"- it was like a giant puffy tortilla with egg, beans, potato, and cheese inside. OH, and the fried chicken was excellent, nice and crispy skin. The tacos were as good as any of the top-tier Durham taquerias. The music was so loud that it took 3 tries to get the order through. Since leaving Honduras in 2006, been looking for a place that makes authentic baleadas and other Honduran food - tough to find, since most Latin American restaurants in the US are Salvadoran. Well I found one, and this is it! We walked in thru the bar (layout is a little interesting but not bad) and found a seat. The owner Delmy waited on us personally, we talked for a bit about where each of us had lived in Tegucigalpa, and then we got right to ordering - they have baleadas, pupusas, sopas y mariscos, platos típicos, etc. and frescos of various fruit flavors (including my favorite, maracuyá). Food was great, and affordable. Music was a bit loud, but I dig loud music so it didn't bother me at all. Super friendly, we will be back. read more

I really liked this place. Yes its loud, yes there is a 'crew' playing pool and drinking beer, who are probably there on a pretty regular basis, but the food was great and the service was very good. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, what more can you as for? I went off of the advice of other reviews and had the Steak with plantains, rice beans and home made tortillas and I must say it has been quite some times since I have had an authentic meal like this. This place was definitely an interesting experience. After reading all the positive Yelp reviews, I thought I'd give it a try. First off, people weren't kidding when they said the music was way too loud. I could not hear ANYTHING above the music and had to scream just to talk to the person next to me. The place seems like a local hang-out and everyone inside seemed to know each other and went there frequently. The waitress was really nice took our orders. I thought the food was definitely overpriced for what it was. It was pretty good sure, but nothing mind-blowing. The food took a really long time to come out, probably bc they were cooking it up right as we ordered, but the ambience was just too overwhelming for us to enjoy the wait. Maybe if the food cost half as much as I paid, it would have been okay, but overall, I say go for it if you want an authentic interesting experience, but if you're looking for a chill hole-in-the-wall-dining-gem kind of place to grab a cheap meal, this is not your place. read more

This place is odd. We wondered in on a Saturday pre-Costco, based on other's Yelp reviews. When we walked in, remember, on a Saturday afternoon around noon, the music was so loud that it hurt, and we stayed, despite having to ask them to turn down the music. They were out of alot of things, and the server was wearing flip flops. I don't know how they have a 98 on their health code rating if their wait staff is wearing flip flops, and has waist length hair undone. Yuck. tHe food was tasty, really tasty, in fact. My wife and I wanted to try out this Honduran restaurant for lunch but seemed to miss their open days. The restaurant recently moved further north on Guess Rd. to close to the intersection with Carver St. We did go for lunch at the new location recently and it's still being renovated/fixed up. I ordered a house salad and a couple of pork papusas which were very good. My wife got a cheese enchiladas plate and enjoyed it. We definitely will try it again but give them several more weeks to finish the renovations. read more
