I used to love this place when I lived in Marion many years ago so I went for dinner last evening when I was in town visiting. I was very disappointed as the quality of the food has declined. I don't know how they did it but my food was virtually flavorless except for the burnt flavor of the steak and veggies in my fajita quesadilla. Customer service was pretty good, which is why I'm giving three stars. I am sad about the quality of the food and I was up with an unsettled stomach for much of the night. read more

Fajitas were flavorful and plentiful. I had chicken, shrimp and steak. The 16 oz margarita in the other had was less than stellar. It was served in a wine glass and seemed to be significantly less than 16 oz and was tasted watered down. Overall good experience. read more

When I went to get it, they could not find it and claimed that someone must have taken it. No apologies, no nothing. Sadly, I had sentimental pins on my jacket. I will never go back. My husband & I went for a late lunch. The complimentary chips & salsa came out quickly & it was delicious. We split a combination plate of a taco, beef burrito & chile relleno for $7.75. My "crunchy"taco was soggy from being on the plate with the other 2 items but it was pretty good. Perhaps they should put it on a separate plate so it won't get soggy. I've been to this place many times and they have some really good food, a very large, nice looking and clean restaurant along with some really very good lunch deals. This is a great place to go if you have a lot of people and need a very large table as they have ample floor space for it. The service is fast and friendly. Usually when I go I get their fajitas as that is one of the best things here but honestly I cannot recall ever getting anything bad here. I'd definitely recommend this place for a great Mexican lunch or dinner. read more

Ate here recently and it was very OK. The menus were broken and kind of dirty. The salsa that was brought out with the chips & salsa was very runny and not that great. I feel like salsa from a jar from a store is better. I ordered chicken fajitas, and they were actually pretty good. With two waters, two entrées, the total came to $21 without tip. The customer service was really good, all the staff was very friendly. It wasn't terrible, but I'd not go again if I had the choice. read more

Our family of 4 was visiting Marion to attend a national Trampoline Gymnastics invitational, and a local recommended Mi Jalapeno. Wow, it was fantastic! The house margarita was boat-sized and delicious; same for the chips and salsa. I ordered the carne asada and loved it. Others in our group ordered steak tacos, a quesadilla, and chicken nachos. All excellent. And our server was friendly, even though we arrived minutes before closing time. I hope we get the chance to return next time the gymnastics championships come to town. read more

A good, solid Mexican restaurant. Went with a large group (called ahead,) and they treated us pretty well. Service was friendly and efficient. A bit slow, but then there were 30 of us... They seated us in a party area off to one side, which worked pretty well. The food was typical of Mexican restaurants around here. The usual choices and combos, all competently done. Large portions. Living in Texas, I had low expectations of Ohio Mexican food... and I was pleasantly surprised. Typically I judge a Mexican place by the salsa, and this place has good salsa. It also has super cheap $4.45 margaritas, and they are quite good, I had one frozen and one on the rocks. Mi Jalapeno seems to be a bit more traditional Mexican instead of the Tex-Mex that I find at home. I had the "Carnitas Uruapan" and it was a great dish. My colleagues (all of whom are born Texans) all got different dishes and all were pleased. Our service was great and our food came out quickly. Lastly, the prices here are super reasonable, both for the food and for the drinks. The bill for 4 grown men that each had two drinks was only $83 pre-tip; this same meal in Houston would likely have run $110 or so. Well done, Mi Jalapeno. Final note: the only thing I have to complain about is the parking lot for the plaza Mi Jalapeno is in. Marion, OH seems like it has huge amounts of well-built parking lots for every establishment, but this one needs some work. Giant, car-swallowing potholes and tight, sideways-oriented spaces are no bueno. read more

I love this place! Go here at least once a year with family or friends. I'd go more often but it's a bit of a drive from Columbus. I've had a few items off their menu and they're all excellent. Enchiladas supreme are great if you can't decide what you want because you get a little of everything! The enchiladas verde are delicious too. My brother always gets this giant rock bowl filled with pork. I don't know what is called but they serve it fajita style and the pork is so tender and juicy. The service is always great, even when we have large groups. But the prices are better. Everything seems to be a little cheaper than you would see at chains like El Vaquero. And they seem to always have some alcohol on special as well. Marion doesn't have a ton of great choices to eat at but this one is one of the best. read more

I don't know what authentic Mexican is vs Tex-Mex; I just know this meal was the shiznittlebamsnipsnacksaddle. It's one of two pork meal plates. Since I used to live in Marion, and get there occasionally now, I want to review Mi Jalapeno. I absolutely love it, and compare every other Mexican restaurant to it. They are always super-friendly and nice, from the hostess to the servers. They bring out generous amounts of chips and salsa, and refill it frequently. The food comes out lightning fast as well. The decor is very nice, and looks amazing. When they moved locations a few years ago, one of the servers told me they were actually remodeling it themselves...that is pretty impressive. The food is excellent and high-quality. I was friends with their food distributor and he commented that they always ordered the more expensive and quality food they had to sell. My extended family has visited there, and we have tried a variety of foods, and we were all impressed with the quality. I typically order the "Fajita Nachos" and ask them to substitute shrimp for the steak, and they always honor that request (albeit for a few dollars more). The prices are also great, and lower than similar restaurants in the Columbus area. Whenever I visit Marion, I make it a point to visit Mi Jalapeno. I know a lot of Marion residents rant and rave about El Campesino, but I have always preferred Mi Jalapeno. read more

Been going here since they opened their doors. Originally from New Mexico, I know good Mexican food and this is it! The chips and salsa are authentic as well as the food. The better-half likes to meet the girls here after work and they still can't believe the great prices. Like one reviewer said, you would pay a good deal more going south of the border for the same authentic food. There is another place in town that's been here longer but I make or break a place on service (with a smile) and at the other place, you get service with a scowl. This place is huge, they have drink specials, the service is johnny on the spot and it's in the old Marion Plaza so you only have to park once if you want to go some other places while there. I've never, ever had a bad experience, food or otherwise here. If it's your birthday, they bring out the huge Mexican Sombrero and sing Cielito lindo to you. This is the closest Mexican place to my abode in the US. So, I go here whenever I'm around. The salsa and cheese dip are brilliant. The margaritas are also bloody good. Frozen strawberry. First class. The food itself however is always a little...bland. I know there's hot sauce to spice things up and a whole host of stuff on the menu. But from everything I've tried so far, I haven't been able to pick out a favourite....it all just seems a little...samey. I still have it at three stars for the Margs, the Salsa and the Cheese dip...which to be fair are some of the best. That and a couple of tacos and I'm fine. It's just the main plates - and the service - which is slow that keep it from four. Anyway. I'll be going back, because of the holy trinity. read more

Seeking to indulge my craving for Mexican, my boyfriend and I visited Mi Jalapeño for dinner on a Saturday evening. They were not particularly busy, and we were quickly seated and met by a server who had our drinks and order in minutes. While their efficiency was approciated, we did not have any truly personable encounters. In the short span of time it took for our entrées to arrive, we munched on warm chips and salsa which I thought was good but it should be noted that I am a weakling on the ability to handle spice scale. My chimichanga and his steak fajita burrito arrived hot, with refried beans, lettuce, sour cream, pico de gallo, and rice. The chimichanga had just the right amount of chicken and peppers and crispy dough. Delicious. I was, however, not a fan of the unfortunately bland rice and beans. Off night on those? Meanwhile, his burrito was a real hit. As we ate, I got a chance to further absorb the decor which is admittedly not my taste. Nothing that would discourage our return, but it grew to be somewhat unpleasing to my eye. Should another craving arise (as it surly shall), we will keep this place on the radar. read more

I've been to Mi Jalapeno several times and took my son there for his 18th birthday last night. Everything was going well, until we told them it was his birthday. They brought over the beat-up, no lining, been-on-everyone's-head sombrero to sing to him and when they were done singing, they smeared a paper plate full of whipped cream all over his face. So much that it went up his nose and dropped a clump on his shirt. We were dumb-founded and taken completely by surprise. Sure, I could've (and should've) guessed that there would be a sombrero involved, but it never would have occurred to me that he would have food smeared all over his face. He was so angry, he couldn't even speak - almost immediately had to go to the rest room to clean himself up (all we had were the napkins we had used for the meal): wash his face, blow his nose, try to clean off his shirt. Here we were celebrating his transition to adulthood, and he was humiliated in front of at least 30 people. I contacted the restaurant about this and was told this was just what they did for people on their birthdays - everyone seems to love it. I was surprised to hear this and asked if they had ever received other complaints - I said I could not imagine them doing this to a middle-aged woman in dress clothes - at that time, she said they had received some complaints but couldn't stop the practice because that's what they do for everyone. Bottom line - good food, just ok service (no refill offers for any of the 6 of us at the table), and questionable birthday behavior. read more
