The popcorn chicken was not good it didn't taste good no flavor. It just like regular chicken with no seasoning

Ordered from caterme as M&M Catering (appeared to be the same company as Mi Granny's). Jamaican Jerk Chicken (thigh & drumstick) packed a little heat (with scotch bonnet) and were well-seasoned, tender and of good value. Pork chops less successful: very thin portion and slightly tough. Curry chicken was okay and coconutty. The accompanied green beans and rice for all dishes were flavorful and unique. read more

After checking out the boundless dinner options at Oakland's First Friday (6/7/19), I finalized my decision to eat at Mi Granny's Kitchen to support a WOC owned stall! Plus, seeing and smelling their smoky grill was not something I wanted to miss! And wow, their Jerk Chicken Plate was delicious! It was my first time having jerk chicken, and the jerk chicken was well seasoned and grilled. For my own preferences, I added some provided hot sauce to introduce more heat and acid. The side of rice, cabbage salad (my fav - I love crunchy and sour), and plaintains complemented the jerk chicken so nicely with their varied textures and tastes. Portion size is on the larger side, and it was enough to satisfy me who missed lunch and to share a drumstick with a friend. The service was also very fast. I waited for 2-3 people to order before me. Then, within 5 minutes of my order, I had my dish served with a beautiful smile! Thank you again, and happy to come back to try something new! read more

I knew I would try Mi Granny's Kitchen again, but I didn't think it would be so soon after my first visit! I came across their stand at Oakland's First Friday again and it was still one of the better selections for that month. This time, I went with the Jollof Rice Plate ($14) which includes chicken stew over rice and peas, plantains, and cabbage salad. The chicken stew was plentiful and was bursting with flavor. It wasn't spicy at all but the various spices and seasonings came together deliciously. The rice and peas were good, but just like last time, the ratio of rice and peas to chicken stew was a bit off. The plantains were delicious, as usual. They were a perfect golden brown and every bite was better than the last. The cabbage salad was cool and refreshing, but definitely not as flavorful as the rest of the dish. They charge 50¢ for credit card transactions, so I'd recommend bringing cash with you to avoid that charge. Overall, a satisfying dish with good flavors; definitely worth a try! read more

I was at Lakefest, which for the most part is a food stall event at Lake Merrit. I decided on two things: I wanted to focus on smaller street foods so I could try more stalls; and that a platter of fried food might not be the best for a hot day and riding my bike home. After going past all the stalls, the one that caught my eye first was MI Granny's Kitchen. Coming from the Caribbean-influenced Florida, it is so rare to find good food out here. And so I was highly tempted by the jerk chicken plate. But again, my focus was on street food, and they had meat pies. I LOVE Jamaican patties, empanadas, spanikopita, samosas - basically any foods stuffed in a flaky crust, so these were a must order. The food handler told me these were amazing. She was right! Homemade chicken meat pies (so very different from Jamaican patties) were full of flavorful chicken. I tried one as is, then went into the yogurt sauce for the second. WOW! That homemade yogurt sauce is bomb! I ended up pouring and scraping all of it into the second pie. Just the combination of flavors was fantastic. I ended up hitting up another stall for more street food, but kept thinking about those chicken pies. Based on the sign saying "limited quantities" I figured I had to get another order to go as they would definitely be gone later. The cashier was surprised to see me again, but I feel she gets it. The two pies I had for dinner were still great, as was the sauce. I learned my lesson - next time I know this stall will be at an event, I'll pack a ziplock bag for more pies. But will also try the chicken as well. read more

Got to try MI Granny's Kitchen at the Foodieland night market at golden gate fields this weekend. There are not a lot of places in the bay that do jerk chicken or Afro Caribbean cuisine so I was happy to stumble upon this location. I've been to Jamaica a couple of times and I'm always looking for good jerk chicken. The chicken plate here was very good although the spice level was probably very mild for standard jerk chicken. Flavoring was good but would have hoped to have little more kick. I'm guessing they keep it that way for events where there is a large variety of taste palettes so it doesn't overwhelm anyone. The rice and beans were very good and the plantains were actually really really good for plantains. Had the right texture without being too hard or mushy, cooked just right and they tasted very good. Did not try any other items as I was there to sample food from a lot of different vendors but you can't go wrong with the jerk chicken if you see this booth at another local festival. Glad I was able to find something a little different that you can't really find elsewhere in the bay. read more

Mi Granny's Kitchen was a great find at First Friday! Amongst the sea of chicken and waffles and tacos was this pop-up, boasting Afro-Caribbean cuisine with menu items including jerk chicken and meat pie. The line was short and the food sounded bomb so we gave it a try. I ordered a combo plate that came with a rich and flavorful goat curry, a delicious seasoned jollof rice, fried plantains, and a simple green salad. The meat was tender and the sauce had a nice spicy kick. The rice was also super tasty and something I plan to try making at home. Service was very friendly and the food came out fast. Mi Granny's has that home-cooked taste that leaves you feeling happily full and cozy inside. I'll be back! read more

I had them cater for our workshops twice and they are always a hit. They are great for both meat eaters and non meat eaters and do the most delicious vegan greens, curries and beans. They are one of my favorite caterers for the quality and the price. One of my coworkers is from Florida so they are picky when it comes to afro-carribean food, and they loveee Mi Granny's Kitchen. They are affordable and delicious. I highly recommend them! read more

The chicken looked amazing (seasoned, juicy), but I don't eat it so got the rice, plantains and cabbage salad. SO good. Each item was well cooked and flavorful, even the rice. Cabbage salad you could see the mustard seeds and it was vinegary but not fatty like cole slaws. Plantains were divine, thick cut, dark (seared?) on the outside, deliciously sweet and soft in the inside. Rice had subtle flavors that took me slowing down eating to appreciate! read more

Ran into this food stall at Oakland Pride this year. Absolutely the best food that I have ever had at a street fair in the Bay Area! I tried to lean over after eating to tell them how good it was...but they were so busy. I shared the goat curry and the jerk chicken plates. SO GOOD!!! And the portions were quite generous. Had the opportunity to try their meat pies and ginger beer last night at Foodieland, and both were AMAZING! Ginger beer was perfectly sweet with just a subtle spice. Meat pie was full of chicken that was beautifully seasoned while the pastry was golden and crispy. The sauce that comes with it is light and creamy with a hint of what tasted like dill. Very reasonably priced and there was great customer service! Will be on the lookout for their next event! read more

Nice workers but the $14 plate I got had 2 chicken leg pieces in it that were about 70% bone. All the meat was gone in about 3 bites. I was turning the bones over like, "Really, that's it?" There was also so much grease in the rice that it pooled in the corner when I set my plate down on a slightly uneven surface for a while. Rice and chicken were just OK in taste, not nearly as flavorful as some Caribbean or West African food I've had before. The mustard cabbage salad though... I could eat a whole plate of that stuff. Fresh, zingy and flavorful. At $14/plate, I'm thinking the quantity needs to be more generous than it was for me today. I know bone-in portion sizes aren't the easiest to measure, but that was bad enough that I wouldn't recommend the jollof/chicken plate to anyone unless they didn't care much for meat. read more

Just had the jerk chicken plate with jollof rice $14 at Oakland First Fridays June 7th 2019. I was gonna get hotbird fried chicken sandwich, but the line was way too long and taking forever. So I went to Mi Granny's Kitchen because I was kinda craving for some jerk chicken too! Oh man, best decision I made that day. First of all the ladies were so kind! Then I was so impressed of the cook lady on the barbecue grill. She was awesome. Portion was generous! Jollof rice was tasty but a bit on the dry side... wished that it was bit more moist. The plantains were delicious as well! Overall everything looks excellent. I was glad I got their plate, and definitely gonna try the oxtail soup dish. :) read more
