I had a taste for genuine soul food in Oakland and asked a few friends for recommendations. The Luxe Box was recommended with no hesitation. I phoned in my order for oxtails, collard greens with Mac and cheese. My wife had the turkey wings with yams and greens. Both entrees were absolutely delicious. The food was fresh and seasoned like home cooking which it most definitely was. We couldn't wait to tell our friends and family about our discovery. The young lady who took my order was extremely nice. I'm glad we found this place. If you're craving real soul food and don't feel like cooking call The Luxe Box. read more

If i could leave zero stars I would! The food was overly seasoned causing it to be extremely salty! The wait time was ridiculous as well. It's very unfortunate because this place was recommended but it was terrible. The customer service was awful also! Not to mention the woman at the front window had extremely potent body odor! read more

The Luxe Box - Salmon plate Cheese cake Fried prawns and chicken tenders - Caterers Near Me - Oakland, California

My sister had been telling me about this place. We finally got to visit. We ordered a number of things and some really good and some just OK. We got the fried fish and shrimp. I really don't like the choice of fish Swai. It's too soft in the inside. The shrimp was fried really hard. Which messed up the texture.. I enjoyed the yams, but the mac & cheese was dry. From all the videos that I seen. I was really banking on that mac & cheese pull. I think it was an off day or we need to come earlier as soon as it opens. My sister had lamb chops which were really good. The yellow rice and the white rice were undercooked but still edible. Just not Tender. I like the Kool-Aid drink and I like the banana pudding, which was more like a whipped cream based pudding. It was pretty good. I would definitely go here again, but I will go when it first open to get the first plates. Oh I almost forgot, we got the turkey wings, and they were really good. Everybody can't make good turkey wings, and those are my favorite. I would definitely go again. I want to try the wings. read more

Food was bomb! I got the fried prawns with mac and cheese and yams, and when I say it was good, I mean it. Everything was flavorful, and the prawns were fried perfectly, crispy on the outside and cooked just right. The mac and cheese and yams were both delicious too. I'll definitely be back! read more

I've been wanting to try this place for a while but the hours never work for my schedule and not living in the area just made it a journey. But I the stars finally aligned! Now one thing you need to know is you order at the window. It is not a go in the building situation. The young lady who took the order was very pleasant and patient when going over the menu. Customer service 10/10 It took a good 20-25 minutes. I got spicy lemon pepper wings and prawns. Man that chicken was so flavorful 10/10 The prawns were regular nothing major but I would say 7/10 when i dipped it in the chicken sauce it was even better. Oh yeah and the ran much was on point too! The macaroni and cheese was blah 3/10 the greens were good 8/10 the strawberry banana pudding was 10/10 ! I would definitely be back for that chicken! I see how they sell out. Definitely a place to try for some soul food in the Bay Area! read more

The Luxe Box - Macaroni and cheese, greens, spicy lemon pepper wings - Caterers Near Me - Oakland, California

I love Lux box. The owner is very nice also. They just gotta get their telephone system up properly, and lay back on the salt a little bit. I've only had too much salt on the greens one time. But I think it must've been a one day thing, cause I've never experienced that before. When my traveling nurse has come from out of town and wants soul food this is the first place that I recommended to. So we gotta stay on point with the food. Other than that, I think it's the best soul food in Oakland. She's really cooking her grandmother's recipes the right way. PS I would've given them five stars but they get the four, because of the last plate with the super salty greens. But I'm sure it'll be better just like the other times that I've had them. I'm sure I will give them five stars next time. read more

The food is amazing. Please don't just pop up there thinking you can order food even if it says it's open on the website and they're taking orders online. Sometimes the online orders are turned off. You literally have to want this food the day before you go pick it up. read more

There were cumin seeds in the gumbo which completely threw off The taste and made it disgusting. I just don't believe that that's how they normally make their gumbo. I truly believe that there's someone working behind that window who is a hater or a weirdo who decided to dump the cumin seeds in my gumbo because there were so many of them and it was disgusting. Who puts cumin seeds in a creole gumbo or even a Cajun gumbo for that matter?. Because of this I've decided to make and sell my own gumbo on Facebook marketplace. My gumbo will sell out in 2 seconds if that's what they're serving people. Not to mention the rice was undercooked. You don't have a rice cooker?. I heard the greens were good but the turkey wings were hard. Yeah no, I can make money in a second if this is what they're serving people seriously. Cumin seeds ridiculous. read more

The food was delicious but very pricey. The wait was short and customers service was at its best! Collard greens on point. Mac and cheese was good, prawns and and yams were good. I had been wanting to try this place, but like a lot of places around Oakland it was closed every time I drove by it. Finally caught them when they were open. I shall return read more

Been wanting to try this place for a while & I must say I was very satisfied! I'm a chef & I'm very critical when trying new restaurants, especially soul food, & I had a great experience. We ordered two plates of the turkey wings, mac & cheese, greens, candied yams, & the caramel pecan cheesecake for dessert. What stood out the most for me was the turkey wings (full of flavor & tender), yams (soft & a nice subtle sweetness) & the caramel pecan cheesecake (creamy , crunchy & rich). The greens were seasoned well & had a nice kick to them. The mac & cheese was good too, not my favorite but still pretty tasty. What I really liked was that it had the authentic soul food smell before we even tasted the food. (If you know, you know lol). Also, the young lady at the window was very pleasant & accommodating which stood out to me as I'm very big on customer service. The only con for me was the wait time (40mins), which wasn't terrible because I ordered it online while I was in traffic so it was ready by the time I arrived. Also, I noticed it's best to order early in the day as they sell out of most options before the day is over. Overall, my experience was great & I definitely look forward to going back! read more

Customer service was good the young lady was really nice super sweet and patient this was my first time there so she explained a few things to me the wait wasn't long about 15/20 mins for fresh hot food that wasn't bad the environment looked clean one person handling payments and the other handling the food I got the prawns and fish with Mac n cheese and yams 10/10 next time o Goni will add pics but yes must try for sure oh and the lemonade was okay 7/10 read more

The Luxe Box - Oxtail Collards Mac & cheese - Caterers Near Me - Oakland, California

I gave this place a try because I saw a review from a foodie on IG...all of the comments were positive. I placed an order online (as suggested) and went to pick up order about 45 mins. later. I ordered the Oxtails (came with rice and gravel) and two side (which were included as well). The price is $35 plus tax not including a tip. I chose Mac and cheese and yams. The young lady at the window was very pleasant and welcoming. The Oxtails were great, meat fell off the bone. Yams were so so. The Mac and cheese was not it. I can't really describe it, but it just wasn't hitting. It looked totally different from the videos on their IG page. Overall, it was ok, but I don't think I'd go back. read more

Great food! The lamb chops were amazing! 10 out of 10! I would highly recommend and I can't wait to go again!

I loved the service and the food. I had the oxtails and the fried chicken wings also. The flavor on the oxtails is amazing and they do a good job of rendering most of the fat off the oxtails (overly fatty oxtails are nasty IMO). The drinks were delicious, also... I just wish they would deliver on DoorDash. read more

It's a hell no. Doubt I will return! The sad thing is this was gifted to me because the person swore by this place. The vids and photos on their social media is definitely misleading and honestly false advertisement which should in itself be a crime. Honestly, the best thing was the canned green beans and artificial lemonade. For nearly $40 you get THREE overcooked gritty (poop veined) shrimp and fishy salmon. You get more damn red chili peppers than shrimp! Also they have to get their ordering system together. My party placed our order TWICE only for them to say, when given the phone number and name and shown receipt from online that the order can't be found only for it to magically be found after our 2nd order was ready. This same issue happened to my brother and nephew last night and they settled for Hibachi. I love supporting black owned business but if THIS is what they are serving opposed to what they advertise on their IG, I'll past and simply wish them well. read more

The Luxe Box - Canned Green beans, Mac & cheese, fishy salmon, overcooked uncleaned shrimp and gummy yellow rice. - Caterers Near Me - Oakland, California

This review is mainly about the service experience; the food seems to be fine with good portion size and flavor (ordered for my husband's lunch so I only sampled it.) We'd passed this place several times and saw a line outside, which told us that the food must be good and finally decided to try today (a Wednesday about 2:30pm). I attempted to order online in the morning but the order page at clover.com listed "isn't accepting online orders right now". I figured that was because the restaurant wasn't open at the time but the same message remained after the opening hours. I decided to go by on my lunch break to pick up an order for my husband. When I got there, there was a customer waiting outside, she had to tell me that the orders were taken at the window. There is a menu posted on the window as well as store hours on the door but no indication that the window was where to place orders (it has a mirror film that you can't see through.) The person who took my order was very pleasant, but only AFTER I'd ordered and paid did she tell me it would take 40 minutes to be ready. That is a long time for a takeaway restaurant; it's not like they have a dining room. When I questioned it, I was told that "we are really busy". I can understand that the restaurant is busy, but so am I. If I'd known that at the beginning, I could have made a decision to run other errands or not order at all. Although they take your phone number for the receipt, they don't have a system to text you that your food is ready. I set a timer for 45 minutes and came back, the food still took another 5 minutes. While I waited, I scanned the QR code on the sign outside "Order Online" which takes you to toasttab.com, that order page also lists "Not accepting orders". The days and hours of operation on the door also don't match the hours on the website or the sandwich board outside the restaurant. As much as I prefer to support black owned businesses, my time and money are important to me and I don't appreciate either one being wasted. I'd only come back if I had the time to wait; please fix your online ordering system. read more

I live 45mins away, I had an appointment in Oakland so I decided to stop by this place for lunch.. I ordered two orders of ol bay honey wings and both orders were wrong!!! .. They gave me plain chicken that was over fried!!! This the second time the chicken was over fried!!! The last time I ate here I had the smothered chicken with same results.. The chicken was tough, the gravy didn't help. Here's the kicker, they weren't even busy! So I don't understand how they F'd up my orders! Also, For the price people are paying, at least make sure the workers are double checking the orders before bagging it up. read more

Great soul food decent prices and always consistent!!! One of my favorite places to eat at and they homemade lemonade is hella good

Late review, but a little disappointed. We were actually on our way to get some pho, when I drove by and remembered this place from IG. People were raving about this place, black owned, soul food. Why not. We ordered the honey glazed salmon with shrimp, chicken wings honey ol bay. Not pictured is the basa with prawns. Sides were Mac and cheese, yams, red beans and greens. Ok the basa was sadly bland, the shrimps were big but way over breaded. The wings were tasty I must admit. The salmon with Cajun shrimps were decent. Only 4 shrimps though, In both plates. The greens were ok, the candied yams were a little too sweet. The red beans were really good, but no rice??? Come on. The Mac and cheese looked like it was gonna be fire. But it was oily, And bland. We were really dissatisfied. Long story short I should have gotten the pho. read more

The food was great at first but it seems like they are getting lazy these days not consistent at all also I called the restaurant before driving 25+ miles there (which makes it 50+ miles round trip) and asked do they have enough food before I make the drive because they are famously known to run out of plates, I asked should I order now?and the little girl on the phone said "we have more then enough and won't be running out any time soon" so I head to the restaurant but when I get there after driving 25+ miles and sitting in traffic the little girl acted as if she doesn't recall the phone convo but when I gave her my number she played like she somewhat remembered but all she said in her defense was that was 30mins ago‍ I was sooooo vexed not only that but my wife and I went there a few days ago, and in the past they told me the gravy they make is made with meat and my wife is a pescatarian, usually in the one that orders so I remember details like that but this time when my wife ordered our food they told my wife that the gravy is not made with meat and instead of just being honest they let her order the gravy after asking and making sure that it wasn't any meat inside of the gravy which the little girl confirmed, and instead of being honest the restaurant never put any gravy on her rice like she asked nor did they put any on the side so she just went without even tho she paid for it... she would've simply ordered another item but you they took that option away by lying. read more

I don't usually write reviews while still eating said food but...This is darn good soul food. I'm currently devouring the Honey Ol Bay Shrimp which comes with yellow rice and two sides. My sides are candied yams and macaroni cheese. I also am having one of the Luxe Lemonades the peach flavor and for a little bit later a slice of lemon cake.
