I am very thankful for local business like Mi Cocina. They have the best and most affordable breakfast burritos in Douglas County. They are fast and their customer service is awesome. During this time I highly support local businesses staying open for people like me who still has to go into the office. They are open bright and early 7 AM. Yesterday I called in to find a breakfast burrito (you would be surprised by the scarcity of it) however fortunately they were open and I got my burrito fix. :) I enjoy their burritos because it was not dry instead wet on the inside and yet still had that burrito feel on the outside. Amazing food, I've been going there for dinner with my dad for years and I recently tried their breakfast burritos with a friend. We went in around 10:30, the restaurant looked great and I loved their decorations. There are specific days for sausage, bacon, and one other meat but I was lucky to come on bacon day :). Danial was more than amazing, I am one of those people who can't do any spice (I'm a whimp) he let me try some of the mild sauce, it was perfect. This review is for the breakfast burritos only. We've been to Mi Cocina many times for lunch and it has always been great. The service is always outstanding as was the case today. We were looking for a breakfast burrito place and really haven't found one near our new house, so we decided to check out the breakfast burritos here. I didn't get the daily special, which maybe that was the problem. The cost went up from $4 each to around $9 each. I was excited because the bag was pretty heavy so I figured I really got my money's worth. When I got them home I realized the salsa had leaked out of the to go containers because the bag was wet on the bottom. No big deal, there was still salsa in the container. Then I realized our burritos were the cause of the leak. Hubby opened his and it was more like one big taco instead of a burrito. It wasn't even close to being wrapped. I opened mine and it was a little more wrapped, but not much. It was good we were eating these at home and not on the go, it would have been a disaster. We both had to use plates and forks. I ordered hot green chile, but it was pretty mild. I'm not sure if it was the sausage or the green chile, but it was also pretty salty. Overall we were not impressed with the breakfast burritos. little, nondescript place in a strip mall that got ample good reviews, so i decided to try it as i was craving anything breakfasty. so they really think highly of their burritos bc you pay out the nose for mediocre (at best) food. i got a tortilla-less green chili bacon and sausage burrito, smothered in green chili with no potatoes. the host recommended 1/2 & 1/2 for the spice factor (1/2 hot, 1/2 mild). i got robbed! man, besides the slot machines, that was the biggest waste of $20 ever! there was mostly egg, i found a few pieces of bacon and a few tiny pieces of sausage and the entire dish was flavorless. i should have cried and let my tears flavor it some. it was beyond disappointing. i had planned on dining in, but moments after i sat down, dude comes out with my food in a carry away bag. so, i guess i am going to eat elsewhere. there was a park nearby and it was a gorgeous day, so i told myself "what the heck, eat out of doors and enjoy the scenery". it was much better than the meal anyway. the place was clean, pretty busy, and the only person i spoke to (host and order taker) was nice enough. will i ever go back? nope. would i recommend to friends? no would i rec to family? depends take yer $20 and throw it at a stripper. better returns there. 5 stars for effort, service and ambience, but i don't get full on that, so 1 star for underachieving performance in culinary taste and overpriced, under delivery of food. read more

I've never written a review based more on what other people's food looked like than my own, but there's a first time for everything. I made the mistake of ordering tamales in Colorado. I have to stop doing this. They are invariably awful. And these were. Hard ends, chewy middles, tough meat (pork I think. No choices. Too much sauce and too little flavor to tell, really.) The guacamole was top notch, the salsa above average, and the chips fresh and endless. The soda fountain drink was suitably fizzy and the flavor good, never a sure thing these days. Looking around this tiny windowless space, I was much more impressed with other people's plates than my own. Especially a heaping plate of French fries that accompanied a Mexican burger. They looked truly outstanding. Smothered burritos and tacos etc all looked good. Lunch specials are around $15, everything else around $20, so pretty standard anymore. And shout out to the lone greeter/server/cashier etc. I'm adding a star solely for his outstanding, attentive, cheerful service. My food was two stars. Ambience about the same. But others as I say looked much better and I'd like to give it another try if I'm down that way again sometime for lunch. read more

The food needs just a little bit of attention to make sure that it is fully cooked, not overly salted and that the burritos are dry so that when you take them to go, they're not leaking everywhere, but this place is really good and I feel like everyone is being extremely picky in the reviews. This unassuming hideaway offers typical Mexican fare at affordable prices. What's more notable is the company's flair for technology. My waiter used a tablet to take the order and send it on to the kitchen. At the end of the meal, he tabulated and processed the bill at the table. Finally, a receipt was sent to my email. We have been enthusiastic diners at Mi Cocina for many years. After their near shut-down (take-out only) during the past two years and subsequent remodel and reopening for seating, this restaurant truly disappoints in aesthetics and food quality. We dined in today. The meat in my Mexican Hamburger was burned on one side and crunchy. The refried beans were luke-warm. The tortilla was cold and the cheese on top was cold and not melted. All in all, the dish was a 1.5 out of 5. My wife's combo plate was warm-ish overall and the beans in her taco were only barely above room temperature. Disappointing. This is the second time in a row the food served at this Mi Cocina was sub-par compared to previous years. The owners have obviously forsaken the customer. On top of that, the lunch specials had a price rise of 33% overnight. No longer recommended. We will not return for a long time, if ever. read more

Mi Cocina has a great lunch deal! I was nearby and chose this Mexican joint as it was around the corner. I am glad I did. The lunch was 7 bucks and included an enchilada with cheese, a beef taco and a relleno. The relleno was fried unfortunately as I prefer soft rellenos but overall the quality of the food and the yummy green chili on everything made my happy. The food was solid, the price was right. Vacationing in CO and used Yelp to find nearby restaurants. Mi Cocina was the closest Mexican food to our location but the 3.5 star rating was a little concerning. We decided to give it a try and SO glad we did! We were a little later than normal lunch hour so the place was almost empty. We were greeted immediately and our drinks and chips/salsa were brought out right away. Service was friendly and the place was spotless. The food came out fast and was nice and hot. All 4 of us enjoyed our meals. The two young men working (I wrote down their names but can't find the note) were attentive and brought us more iced tea and chips several times. The tamales were full in size and flavor, the chile relleño was crispy and chewy, and the beans and rice was smooth and had a subtle perfect flavor that complemented the meal as a side rather than a glumpy after thought. There's definitely been a considerable shift in the Mi Cocina Express experience. It started with them eliminating serving Ice Tea, yes ice tea at a restaurant was discontinued. Then came no cups for a drink to go. Now, they have raised their prices that actually are more than Steakhouses have for a much more substantial meal. The Lunch Menu originally was $8.75, great deal with a drink, sometime during the Pandemic it got raised to $11.00, still a value. Now, it's $14.00 and your choices are drastically limited. I reviewed the rest of the Menu and observed a lot or $19. $21 meals. If you order a soda, it's $4.50, no to go cups remember. I feel terrible for the employees, they are beyond great. I could feel the uncomfortableness with them due to the price increases. The food is above average, but what I would have rated as one of my top value meals prior, I would now rate it as not a good deal. The only reason I will return to this establishment is to see the employees. My loyalty is to them, not the Owner. read more

I was meeting my husband for an early dinner, walked in and went to use the bathroom and a MALE EMPLOYEE FOLLOWED ME IN to tell me I couldn't use the bathroom until I bought something first (policy) and wouldn't leave the ladies room until I did. I was appalled that would even happened, so when I asked for a way to contact the owner, he smiled largely and said it was him. I politely told him that I understand it's their policy but was unaware upon entering the establishment, and I would have preferred to have a woman come into the restroom and tell me. He said that the hostess couldn't leave the door (which was 10 feet away) incase guests came in, and I replied that he should have watched the door and sent her in anyway. Solid! Solid! Solid! This is what I think about when someone talks about Colorado style Mexican cuisine. It's all in the sauce. The Asada Burrito smothered with the green chile sauce.... mmmmmm! They have the best green chile sauce I have ever had so far while living in CO - and I have been actively looking for the best. The Chile Rellano was light and airy yet extremely satisfying. It too was smothered in their green chile sauce... and lots of cheese. The Queso and Chips with added Mexican Chorizo was exceptional. Back where I come from salsa is the mainstay on the tortilla chip conveyance vehicle, but this warm and satisfying cheese dip with the chorizo added isn't bland like others I've had in CO. You don't find yourself saying "I've had enough of that"... like so many of the others. Oh yeah... full bar. OK, dinner prices are juuuuuust a little higher than you would expect from a very small and narrow strip/industrial mall space. The portions are big and the ingredients appear to be top shelf. It is very well appointed inside with some of the most tasteful and well designed awesome seating arrangements I have ever seen. I was there on a WED evening and the place was 3/4 full of diners. Only waited about 12 mins for the order to be delivered to the table. Hot, fresh and authentic. Service was spot on too. So now you are saying to yourself "Authentic huh? Pfffffft!". Well here's my justification; Back in the Central Valley of Cali is this really cool city called Visalia. For 3+ generations one Mexican restaurant in town served the best Mexican food between Sacramento and Los Angeles - it is called "The Las Palmas Restaurant". What made them unique was their attention to old family recipes that changed very little over the decades. One of those unique aspects can be found even today in their rice - they toss in peas. Yes peas. Guess what, so does Mi Cocina. In fact I would swear they use the exact same rice preparation as Las Palmas does. Never anywhere else have I seen peas in Mexican rice prepared like this. Light and not congealing into irregular clumps on the plate. Seasoned perfectly without being obnoxious. It's like my childhood all over again - except now I eat more than ground beef crunchy tacos.
