Quaint little restaurant in St. Augustine. Staff is so friendly. El Salvadoran food at its finest. Everything. We ordered was delicious, fresh and non greasy. The homemade hot sauce added more flavor to the dish. We had al pastor and campechano tacos. Meat in the tacos were good portions. Shoutout to our local community heroes like Carlos!!! This is a very welcoming venue. Carlos was warm, personable, and friendly. The dining area is clean and makes good use of its space. The menu is very nice, easy to understand, and has a lot of variety with many choices of toppings, fillings, and sides. I had a delicious savory pork tamale and a savory combination pupusa with pork, bean, and cheese. I had a side of sweet plain, Salvadorian cream, and pickles vegetables. I also had a cold and refreshing Modelo Negr. Authentic flavors made with skill and love. Carlos informed me that the sauces are housemade. They are both so delicious! Thera a green jalapeño and a red sauce. I had both and they paired well with my dishes. For dessert I had a refreshing horchata!! All my senses are happy!!! Bravo!!! Wow! A hidden gem that I am so glad I found! I loved the warm salsa-it was such an interesting yet delicious take! The tortillas were definitely homemade and so much better than your typical store bought tortilla! I just got queso with chorizo and it was so good! I loved this style of queso and how thick it was! The owner running it was so attentive and kind! And even though it was a small more quick service style restaurant-it was perfect for a quick bite! Food came out so fast and well made! Always remember seeing people going into Mi Carnal and thought some day I need to try it - so today we did. Arrived around 3 - so well after lunch and before dinner - not very busy. First impression- the place is really clean. The owner Oscar greeted us and helped us order. We know we wanted the chicken tortilla soup. Also read where most people love Their pupusas. Oscar asked if we like pork - we do and opted for their chicharon (pork) rather than cheese or cheese and bean. Bought a couple of beers - picked a table near the window and waited for our order. Everything arrived nice and hot. So tasty. Lots of food. Excellent. You will love this place. read more

Just okay. I feel like I get a lot more value for about the same price at the Mexican cantina just down the road. Plus, free chips and salsa and unlimited refills on drinks at that other place. A lot more options to choose from there as well. So for value/price, that's part of where the 3 stars come in. Service was great however. Very friendly and welcoming. The interior decor is lacking, but that has never bothered me anywhere I go as long as the place is clean, which this place was, so good job there. My husband really enjoyed his burrito, said it was tasty. My street tacos were barely okay. The steak meat in them was very tough and overcooked/ hard. Thats the other reason for 3 stars. read more

Chile relleno- the pepper was not roasted before it was dipped and fried, so it was tough. The amount of cheese in it was abundant. The ranchera sauce on top was good but not enough. I wish he had put on it. Overall, it's the closest to authentic I've tasted in this area yet. Listen... these are the best papusas I've ever had. I apologize I didn't take pictures of them but please believe they got destroyed immediately. My favorite was a toss up between the bean and cheese and the plain cheese. They were amazing. The service was very personal and it felt like I was in a small town visiting a family restaurant. The place is hard to find unfortunately if you follow the directions for Yelp--it'll lead you past the restaurant on the wrong side of the street. It's actually by the Save A Lot near McDonald's. Once you find it, the place is super tiny, so small groups or a group of two. You'll be packed in close. I'll definitely make this a regular spot in St. Augustine and like the previous reviews mention, order some papusas to go. They really do reheat well. read more

Sensational food We found this wonderful family run eatery in a shopping centre outside the touristy historic district of St Augustine. We liked it so much that we came here 3 times during our 4 night stay at St Augustines. The dishes that we tried were: Chicken tortilla soup - The soup was delicious - made with real chicken broth and full of fresh ingredients and flavour which was improved by the addition of 5 drops of habanero sauce as recommended by the owner Carlos. We had this every time we visited because we loved it!! Biggest burrito pastor (spicy grilled pork) - made with paper thin flour tortillas and the perfect amount of rice, beans, lettuce, cheese and meat. Taco salad campechano -fresh crunchy flour tortilla chips topped with lettuce, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, avocado, steak and chorizo. Pupusas - delicious corn flatbreads stuffed with tasty porky chicharron and cheese. Tacos - soft corn tortillas filled with spicy chorizo, topped with cilantro and finished with a squeeze of lime. Mi Carnal is our go-to meeting spot before we head to a concert at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre. Here is why... 1. Close to my Sidekicks Daughter's place... So she can meet us for dinner... Always a good time.. 2. It has Pupuas... This was the first place we'd tried them and because of them; we've tried them everywhere we go and we can find them... Their's are the light corn tortilla masa filled with amazing amount of cheese.. So think a thin crust pizza on the outside and an enormous amount of yummy gooey warm cheese on the inside.. You top them with their delicious cabbage slaw(don't know the real term El Salvadoran wise) as well as the light red sauce with no heat(they have agreen that is hot and a red that is even hotter if you wish to add those) These will make your heart sing... You can get them just cheese(queso) bean and cheese(frijoles queso) or pork (chicharron) We have tried all three. They are all very good but I always do an order of cheese/queso to go.. The reason behind that is because they reheat AMAZINGLY folks and you can make yourself some amazing dishes with these.. 3. Last reason we always hit here before a concert cuz we always take takeaway food for after the concert.. Come on you guys...You can't say, live music doesn't make you hungry or maybe it's the party favors.. I always get some variety of their Biggest Burrito.. I just take out the lettuce and sour cream cuz those are two things that don't hold up well..(sour cream gone bad equals food poisoning) During our last trip I got a chorizo and chicken biggest burrito and let's just say it made us HAPPY riding home back up US1 after the Harry Connick Jr. show.. If you try to find them on Yelp for some reason it goes back to their old address and establishment but if you look at the pictures you'll see where they have moved with one of my pictures ...They're right next to Save-A-Lot and Planet Fitness on US1.. This is a local gem! We had never tried Pupusa before and it was fantastic! My 6 and 4 year old loved it too.
