I made a reservation for Saturday, October 9th at 6:30 for 3 people. Per Open Table the time limit for a table of 3 was 2 hours 15 minutes. I received a call the day before to confirm my reservation, which I did. We arrived on time and were seated. We were almost immediately asked if we were ready to order - we immediately felt rushed. We ordered apps and dinner at the same time. Our food was brought out very quickly. Around 7:20 the waiter asked if we wanted coffee or dessert and we asked to see the menu. We decided to decline on coffee/dessert, at which point the waiter brought our check without us requesting it - we still had wine to finish - he then proceeded to TELL me we had to leave the table as they had it reserved for 7:30, I told him we had only been there for an hour and his response was again we have it reserved for 7:30. Upon leaving I asked the Host at the front desk what their time limit was and he responded since we can't do outside dining we are limiting to 1 - 1 1/2 hours - there was no apology. It would have been nice if someone would have informed us of this when they called to confirm reservation or when we arrived. I understand the loss of tables because it was too cold to use their outside seating, but I certainly think expecting a table to come in on a Saturday night and be done in an hour and not even letting us know is bad business. You have lost a customer. read more

The restaurant itself is beautiful. My husband and I were very excited about trying out this new place. Unfortunately, the food was bad. We ordered cauliflower and the octopus for appetizer. The cauliflower had too much lemon on it and overlwhelmed all the other flavors in the dish. The octopus was tender but tasteless. For the main course we shared the duck entree. The duck had such a bad aftertaste that I took two bites of it and decided not to have the rest as it was inedible. About an hour after leaving the restaurant my husband and I got sick. I believe we both got food poisoning. Extremely disappointing and will not be returning. read more

Had a wonderful dinner this evening. Started with the crispy cauliflower, had both the lamb shank as well as the shrimp with creamy orzo and we shared the ricotta donuts for dessert. Everything we had was delicious. The prices might be slightly on the high side, but it's worth it for the freshly prepared, creative and delicious dishes. It is also BYOB which can cut down on the per person cost. Will absolutely be back. read more

I have been to this location 2 times now. I must say the food is very good. Both times we started with the 3 dips as appetizers. I have tried the hummus, tzatziki, eggplant, baba ganoush, and the Matbucha. All of the spreads are excellent. Their hummus is a little different than traditional hummus, its a little thicker, almost like peanut butter. The hummus us outstanding taste wise. The other dips are really good too. Tzatziki is a little chunky but very tasty. Pita bread is nice and fluffy and they give you plenty of it. The first time around I had the med chicken hummus bowl. Very good marinate on the chicken with the nice mixture or spinach and tomato. Of course the hummus is great as well. Second time around I got the steak hummus bowl. I am not sure what they used to marinate the steak but the sauce was stellar. The mix of bell peppers and union complimented the steak well. I will definitely keep coming back to try other entrees on their menu. I would highly recommend if you like Med food. read more

The appetizers were very good. We had octopus and the 'cigar' which is similar to an egg roll. However, I had the duck and frankly, the only flavor that came through was a very gamey taste with nearly no seasoning flavors at all. I've had duck in many restaurants and it never was gamey. The mixed root vegetables were very bland and I don't think it had any sauce on it at all. The polenta was nearly burnt. My friend had the steak which was served kabob with vegetables and the beef, although tender, really didn't have a good flavor. Perhaps it's their meat supplier? Someone else ordered the eggplant parm and it wasn't that great either. At these prices, I expected better. Can't figure it out.. alternate chef? Won't go back. read more

We had high expectations. But we have to conclude that Mezza is a mediocre, overrated and overpriced place. The bread was good!. As an appetizer we had the octopus, however the sweet potatoe purée was not a good marriage with the octopus. For entrees we had the lamb shank and the Moroccan chicken tagine. Unfortunately, the chicken tagine was very sweet. The lamb was good, but the orzo that came with it was very mushy, and the spinach was too salty. All in all, a very disappointing experience. A lovely new gem in Livingston. We stopped by on a Tuesday night without a reservation and were promptly seated. The decor is gorgeous with a sexy vibe. Even on a Tuesday the place was busy with families and couples out on dates.The menu was extensive if you like Greek food. We ordered the hummus and Israeli fish tacos which were both tasty. For entrees, the skirt steak and seafood gnocchi were delicious with generous portions. My favorite was the dessert - ricotta fritters with 2 dipping sauces. Sooo good! I will come back for lunch next week. It's BYOB but the Wine Legend across the parking lot came in handy. read more

Decent food but not worth the price. We ordered the crispy cauliflower appetizer, the branzino entree, and the Moroccan chicken tajine entree. My first complaint is that our server never told us about the specials (we listened to them from another server telling another table about them after we ordered) and he didn't know anything about the menu. I told our server that I am trying to eat low fat and minimal added sugar and he had no idea what to recommend. I asked how things were prepared and he seemed unsure. He then began talking to me about carbs and gluten. I told him that I was not gluten free and repeated my dietary requirements. Eventually, I just ordered what I thought would be okay. We had the cauliflower baked rather than fried and it was okay. I'm sure it would have been better fried. The branzino was cooked to perfection-- wonderful crispy skin, tender moist fish; however the dish, overall, lacked flavor. The chicken tajine was tastier but the chicken was dry and over cooked. The portions were okay and I understand that it's an upscale restaurant, but the meal was not worth $100 out the door. I have spent half of that at other places and had a better meal. My Diet Coke was empty for a long period of time before I finally had to ask our server for more. If I'm spending $100 on a meal, I expect better service. And perfectly executed food. Entrees were good, apps were hit or miss, service was friendly but disorganized. Overall, the place has to work out some kinks. For example, it took over 35 minutes for us to get our apps. They did not all come out at the same time, so we had to sit and wait before every one in our party got their food. My friends ordered 3 different dips but ever got pita so they had to ask for it. My other friend had a kale salad that was all sandy like they did not bother to wash the kale. It was supposed to come with ricotta salata but he wanted Parmesan. Waitress said not problem. Then before the dish came out she came to the table to say the chef would not make any substitutions. Really? So they brought the salad and my friend asked a bus boy for a little parmesan and he brought it out in a dish. Great. Why couldn't the chef do that? We were still working on our apps and the entrees came out. Really? I guess they can't get their timing right. Once again though, we did not get the entrees all at the same time so we had to sit their with our foods getting cold waiting for everyone to get their entree. The skirt steaks were good but the short ribs had some kind of spice that was way too overpowering. Then dessert time came. There were maybe just a few tables left with patrons. Ordered the chocolate cake. Waitress says it will take 20 minutes. Ok. No problem. Five minutes later she comes out of the kitchen and says the chef won't make the cake because he needs to "save some for tomorrow." WHAT??? He probably wanted to go home and did not want to wait the 20 minutes for the cake. Did I say we had to keep asking for our water glasses to be refilled? Also, tables are tiny and really close together so the restaurant gets very noisy. So in conclusion, I don't understand why this place gets all these stars on Yelp. Maybe because Livingston lacks decent restaurants. I would much rather drive to Montclair than come back to Mezza. Sorry. And I guess all because of a lazy chef and poorly trained staff. read more

Excellent olive oil to start with bread. Ordered ice cream 3 flavors (Excellent) and Ricotta Fritters (Fantastic) to share for dessert. Decided to try this restaurant rather than go down the street to Lithos. We were very surprised at the limited menu and the high prices. The tables are narrow along the window so you feel like you are eating with the table next to you. While the Israeli salad ($12) was good , the cod fish ($37)was tasteless...Lamb chops were ok but @ $37.00 they should be, especially with nothing on the side but 2 grape leaves cut in half . It was the waiters first night and he was good and attentive. $115 for 2 people without dessert , a bit steep for what appeared to be a casual restaurant. The only thing I want to complain about was the waitress and the waiters but in such a rush to pick up a plate.
