However, the portions seem measured for bulimics, not normal adults. 2 or three spoonfuls of shredded or cut up meat do not do it for me even when accompanied by small basket of pita. Based on the reviews I was hoping to be wowed but unfortunately the food here just didn't hit the spot. The fish tacos, falafel, and short rib entree were mehh and not as amazing as I expected for the price. The best part was the hummus and pita bread app. I might come back for that pita and maybe to try some other dishes. The food was so amazing. So high quality and I was not disappointed by anything I ordered. I got the grilled chicken kabobs, hummus, cauliflower and pistachio baklava and all were 20/10. I've heard great things about Mezza so my friend and I decided to give it a try. We loved that this place was BYOB. I brought a bottle of Rosé and our waiter brought us an ice bucket, which I really appreciated. We weren't too hungry so we skipped the app in favor of dessert. I got the Long Island Duck for the entree and my friend got the Grilled Skirt Steak. Both were very good. I was pleasantly surprised by the polenta cakes. The crispy outside layer and the fluffy cake inside went really well with the duck and the sauce from the veggies. I would definitely recommend getting it if you're a fan of duck. For dessert, I got the baklava with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. My friend got the peach and mango sorbet. We both loved dessert. The outdoor dining patio was perfect! They have an area where the tables are covered by a tent, but outside of that, all the other tables also had umbrellas. The tables were spaced out and everyone wore masks as expected. When I first got to Livingston NJ on Saturday, my family and I wanted something Mediterranean so I found out through yelp.com that there's a restaurant called mezza in Livingston NJ. My family and I went into the restaurant and it's the most beautiful restaurant with decor that you are going back in time. Juan was an awesome waiter who told us about the specials for dinner. We ordered everything at once but he knew that we wanted everything to come slow not fast. The food is outstanding. I recommend that Turkish Ezme, hummus and eggplant for appetizers then for dinner: Mediterranean shish kebab, kale salad,lamb shank, baked eggplant parmesan. The desserts are so good and delicious. I give Juan 1,000 stars for a job well done. I give owners and general manager each 10,000 stars for a job well done and opening second location. I feel like Mezza deserves 3-1/2 stars but since I can't do that I decided to round up to give them the benefit of the doubt. The hummus and the Baba ghanouj were excellent. Some of the other appetizers were good too. The entrées I've had have been a little more hit or miss. Some were tasty and some were too dry and/or bland. This is a go to for excellent Mediterranean food at a fair price. Great selection of appetizers (can't go wrong with the 3 for $18 deal to start.....make sure you try the Lebne) Well-seasoned and consistently excellent entrees and salads. The baby kale salad is special but tell them to go light on the salt. Not a huge selection for entrees but that's not a bad thing. They do them well and there's enough diversity to satisfy any palate. Desserts here are excellent. Highly recommend the Halvah ice cream. Polite and attentive service. All this should add to a 5 BUT......the room is consistently understaffed. So you typically wind up with one or two excellent servers being asked to do too much. Fantastic! I had been wanting to try this restaurant for a while and finally made it for dinner a few nights ago. My friend and I actually ordered a bunch of appetizers and three mezzas and that was perfect as we were able to experience so many wonderful flavors! The crispy cauliflower is a MUST, and the stuffed grape leaves, falafel balls, and crab cakes were very delicious. I grabbed a lunch menu on my way out, and when I saw that hummus bowls are offered for lunch I had to go back a couple of days later! I had the wild mushroom hummus bowl and my husband had the mixed vegetable hummus bowl. Both were terrific! Very flavorful and satisfying. And of course, I had to order the crispy cauliflower again! By the way, the decor is really beautiful, though I also really like that there is outdoor seating available for when the weather is nice. I'm looking forward to returning! read more

Amazing atmosphere with great service and outstanding food. We had the hummus with pita, quinoa salad and roasted eggplant as appetizers. All were delicious. Creamy hummus with fresh pita and the quinoa & eggplant were very flavorful with fresh herbs and spices. The entrees we had were the lamb and papperdale with short ribs. Both were so good. I have fallen in love with Mezza since it's inception to Livingston. When I heard it was opening up, I thought it would be like another Greek restaurant in town but it's much more. One of my favorite items on the menu are the hummus bowls, which first drew me to this place. Since my days working in the city, I have yet to find local places that makes hummus bowls. And these are delicious, full on meals! They have a ton of variety from mushroom and onions; to falafel; to chicken; vegetables; skirt steak; and braised short ribs. All in bowls of hummus! It's amazing. The flavor and consistency is beyond. And the pitas are so soft and when you dine in, they're endless. The appetizers are also very good, especially the falafel (the perfect amount of crispiness), israeli salad and roasted cauliflower. Portions are generous. The atmosphere is lovely - not too fancy, not to casual, so you can make it what you wish for your preferred dining experience (you won't be too dressed up or down at this place). The service is good; I've had some who have been better and more attentive than others, like most places. Sadly, I have only eaten here for lunch thus far, as they don't offer many of the items on the dinner menu that is on the lunch menu (such as hummus bowls or sandwiches), which have become favorites. I almost thought of giving 4-stars but the food is too delicious to knock it down from 5-stars for that. Their dinner menu does includes some lunch items and a varied selection of other foods (fish, meat, chicken, etc.) but not everything, which just happen to be my favorites! This rating is more about management tonight than the meal. Mezza informed us that there were two seatings - 6 and 8pm and were courteous to ask us to come at 8:15. Great! But we actually waited until 8:45 to be seated and it took until 9:15 for water, uncorking wine and our dinner orders. Honestly, we were all relaxed and so happy that the restaurant was observing COVID inside regulations. However, that doesn't excuse horrible service. Dinner took forever, food was overcooked and cold. No complaints by patrons yet, when we finally got bill and were waiting for it to be processed we were told that we had to pay quickly because they needed to clean up. We were the last table for a reason! The service sucked! We never complained about late seating, lack of service, or food quality YET, they tacked on a 20% gratuity for 6 people. Food was good, service was fine but very hard to enjoy your meal when every time the front door opens you get a blast of cold air that sends a chill through you. My legs were cold to the touch. Just finished eating at Mezza for the first time. Place had been highly recommended. Food was quite good, with hits and misses, but service was awful tonight. We saw our waiter literally four times throughout the evening, waiting 15 to 20 minutes upon seating to just get water and our wine opened, finally see him again to order food finally seeing him again to order dessert and never to deal with any of our service mixups. Rarely do I go somewhere I could literally eat everything on the menu so it was hard to decide what to order. The mezza trio we ordered was less than spectacular but still decent. We also ordered grape leaves which had dill in the description but was nonexistent. Definitely needed it and maybe even some lemon. Octopus was an interesting preparation and overall tasty but the octopus didn't seem as fresh as we usually would get. Had a fishy taste to it. And here's where more of the issues began, some in our party ordered appetizers as entrées yet they came out with the appetizers. They ended up being the highlight of the meal but that wasn't when they should've been served. Definitely recommend the Persian shrimp and the Israeli fish tacos. Also a long wait to finally get entrees after appetizers but they were overall quite delicious - the skirt steak and the kofta- both nice size portions, well prepared, and quite tasty. Had pre-ordered a chocolate soufflé for dessert and it was only OK. Very pretty preparation but the soufflé was dry. The pistachio baklava was what we would all recommend! Overall, we would come back because the food was worth another visit. If we encountered the same service issues that would be the end of our going to this restaurant. As we were leaving, we expressed our disappointment in the service to our host as the manager was nonexistent this evening. He only seemed remorseful when we mentioned we'd be putting it on social media. read more

Mezza is a refreshing change from the "same old" experience of restaurants in a suburban area. I used to live in NYC and Mezza has a big city feel - between the beautiful, original decor and exotic flavors. Even the hummus tasted different. I didn't love every dish we had but most of it was delicious. We'll definitely go back, this time with a bigger appetite since everything was very filling. I had high hopes for this place based on reviews. Perhaps it was just an off night, or perhaps we just ordered the wrong things. The place/decor is lovely, but for me the food fell a bit short on most of the dishes. The lamb shank was done well, but the size was disappointingly small compared to what I had seen/read on yelp. (This could be just one off.) The persian shrimp appetizer just tasted like cream; there was not even a hint of the advertised lime or sumac, which were the flavors I was hoping to get out of the dish. The octopus itself was done well, but the accompaniments were too salty, being 80% olives. The cauliflower was good though a bit too greasy for my taste. While nice in texture, the gnocci's sauce lacked depth of flavor and just tasted like tomato sauce. However, the seafood couscous was lovely and well portioned. If I were to come back, I would probably order that again and try the fish tacos. Perhaps I'll try that as take out next time I'm in the area. read more

Mezza Livingston is quite good! Their food is Mediterranean and extremely well fresh. The night we recently had dinner there, a Wednesday, was busy, which gives a good vibe when entering. The two people accompanying me totally enjoyed their Sea Bass and the waiter was happy to accommodate a special request for no garlic. I decided to go all Mediterranean and had some fun with Grape Leaves (they stuff themselves), Hummus, and of course my favorite, Baba Ghanoush with delicious pita bread. Nice new Mediterranean restaurant in town. Big fan of the decor and the atmosphere. We really enjoyed the hummus and other dips (very fresh), the shrimp orzo, and the lamb shank that we ordered. We had the same waitress from both visits, lunch and dinner, and she was great. The only downside was the entrees were slow to come out, however I'm sure this can be addressed. We did not notice so much during dinner as the appetizers kept us busy, however lunch was a different story. Might be an issue if you need to have a quick lunch.
