We were set with an appointment at 12 after multiple text messages from Rick insisting to make an appointment with his company. Rick calls us and says "I'm here". We asked "Where are you?" He continued to say he was in Spring Valley. The address we gave him was in National City. He proceeded to ask for the address and we thought he wouldn't have a problem finding it in. He calls us again "I'm here by the office and the gate". Sir we don't have a gate. He didn't want to continue looking for our address so he said "I'm going to call it a day, just find someone else". AND HUNG UP. So please listen to Rick and "Find someone else".

In my life as a homeowner, it has been difficult to find a steady contractor who is reliable,…read moretrustworthy, affordable and consistent in the quality of service they offer. Until now. Meet Jack and his expansive team of professionals. NOTE: I will not be disclosing pricing in this review. If you have questions, message me. We had a few things in mind for what we planned to be a series of home improvement projects: reset the fence, which was leaning; remove all of the grass in the yard and put down pavers; put down a patch of turf for the pups; interior and exterior painting of the house; redo or reset some of the existing pavers, which had become uneven and loose; and fill in the gap between the base of fence and the yard to avoid the pups being able to escape. In summer of 2021, we could not have been looking for a contractor at a worse available time. As things were reopening in the state, and with the housing market red hot, it was hard to find a contractor to come out to even look -- LOOK -- at the job. People were putting visits for mere quotes on the books 4-6 weeks out. But Jack and his team came through. Again and again. Ultimately, we opted to do everything noted above all at once. And Jack managed it in a way that we did not have to vacate the house for any period. About Jack and his team, I appreciate the following: They are open and honest. Before he even wrote up a contract, he and his team walked the yard on multiple days. Jack came by more than once to speck things out. They were forthcoming: The plan we had in mind would not work given the sloping nature of the yard. And the initial pavers selected would not have fit the style of the home. They had alternative ideas and suggestions and, for the sloping issue, a better plan, which we love, love, love! They ended up building a wooden deck and staining it. Before we got to work on these various projects, Jack came back to sit down with the contract -- which is a couple dozen pages long. He and his team are accustomed to working on major commercial projects, but have no problem working on a smaller home renovation or remodel (which is just awesome, especially in the current market). So it felt quite formal and legitimate. Jack went over the timeline, materials, insurance, the individual teams who would come at different phases of the project, what would happen if something went wrong or if we changed our minds. And this is important: Jack was very reassuring and communicated often via phone and text before, during and after the projects. There were two minor but unexpected issues after the close of the project, and both were handled immediately with no question. That is integrity. Side note: One of the most furious experiences I had as a homeowner was many years ago. I was getting a roof repaired. We over purchased on the shingles, which was fine, because I wanted to have some on hand should there be a future need to replace some or sections. But when the project was done, the contractor took them. When I confronted him about it, he said they did not have them anymore; they used them on a different project. I cannot see that type of situation occurring with Jack and his team. In fact, he talked about what would happen if they ran long or if they had surplus materials. And we did have surplus at the end of the project. You know what he did? He. Asked. Me. what I wanted to do with the surplus: keep it or return it. I care about details, and I care about process. At one point, I had a question about *what I thought were* imperfections in how the team was laying the pavers. Jack come out to take a look. With so much patience, he walked me through and explained why everything looked that way and how it would ultimately look. This is huge. As a woman who has worked with mostly male contractors my entire adult life, these people will sometimes work to make you feel very, very small. Not Jack. He is a professional and his work ethic and integrity show in his communication and in the work. Same for his team. You ever hire someone and the work site is a mess after they leave? I did not find a single stack of nails nor a splatter of paint. Very impressed all around. And the end result of all of these various projects is stunning -- and all was very affordable given the expansive scope of work and turnaround time (all was completed within about 5 weeks). Never did I feel that I could not trust Jack and his team. Never did I feel like he would try and slide in some hidden cost or oversell me on some nonsense. Never did I feel like something would go wrong on site and he would simply try and shift the blame on his team, on us or on a manufacturer. We have other projects that we want to complete, and I have asked Jack to stay near because there is not another team that I want to hire to help bring forth any of our other dreams.

If you want your project done the right way, not the sloppy way, then Sergio and his crew will absolutely deliver. SD Construction Works has done a variety of projects for me, for example, flooring, electrical, full bathroom remodel, installed doors, new fencing, patio cover, etc. I have been ecstatically pleased by the quality of their craftsmanship, intergrity and reasonable prices. I trust and appreciate Sergio's judgement so much that I often ask him for input before starting new projects as well as to fix work done by prior contractors. I have even waited for his schedule to open up instead for hiring someone else becuase the likely stress and fustration of dealing with another contractor, unlikely to be of the same caliber wasn't worth it for me. I sincerely appreciate that he likes to share his knowlege by clearing and thoroughly explaining each project with respect to options and possible complications. He's also extremely aware and proactive, for instance, Sergio will point out other issues beyond the scope of the project at hand. In short, if you want to keep the phrase "I regret hiring..." in your vocabulary hire another contractor, if not hire SD Construction Works. And you too will experience the novelty of contractors showing up on time.

When the first general we interviewed pointed out all the complications and problems (there were a lot) and quoted us 12K not including the floor or cabinets we realized it was a bigger job than we realized. Thank goodness the next person we called was Sergio. Having been through two entire house remodels we have seen the good and the bad of contractors; our last general contractor was amazing but sadly retired a few years back. Sergio meets every single criteria we have for a top notch general contractor. - His work is very high quality and he can do it all; he's even a certified electrician - He's licensed and insured, which matters a lot to us - His prices are extremely reasonable, less than half of the first quote we received - He's super punctual and fantastic with communication, such a hard quality to find in contractors - He's a very dedicated and hard worker. On a Friday his helper didn't make it to work and one of our ancient water shutoff valves broke (not his fault). He stayed working at our house until after 7pm to complete the work he had promised for the week in addition to fixing the valve which wasn't even in his original scope of work. - There's no pressure to do work you don't want to have done. He's great about noticing little details and pointing out all your options, making sure you're happy with your final product, but it's totally up to you what to have done or what to skip. On top of everything else he came to the rescue when the epoxy floor specialist we hired flaked on us the morning they were supposed to come out and do the floor. He ended up doing the epoxy himself and it turned out great. The project was finished a few days ago and we couldn't be happier. Usually in my contractor Yelp reviews I try and give the good and the bad, but I truly can't think of anything negative to say about this company. I was so pleased I referred them to my sister for a bathroom remodel. Absolutely recommend!

As a licensed flooring contractor, I've worked with David Kulp and A Better Life Construction on…read moremultiple occasions. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was deeply disappointing and has left me unpaid for the work I completed. David hired me to install flooring at a high-rise project. The job was already behind schedule when I arrived, and on top of that, the wrong flooring had been delivered, delaying the start by over a week. Despite these setbacks -- none of which were under my control -- I began work and was pressured by David to move quickly. I reminded him, as he knows from past jobs, that I focus on doing things correctly, not just quickly. Three days into the job, David informed me that painters were coming Monday. I couldn't work over the weekend due to building restrictions, so I waited to hear back from him about the next steps. After a week with no contact, I reached out -- only to be told that he had finished the job without me and that he felt I had "poor work ethic." This came as a shock and felt like I was being made the scapegoat for delays that were outside my control. When I asked to be paid for the work I had already done, David agreed on an amount and said he would mail me a check. A week passed, no check arrived. When I followed up again, he told me he'd pay in a "timely manner" -- and then threatened to involve the police if I contacted him again. To this day, I have not been paid for the labor I provided. This experience was disheartening and unprofessional. I'm sharing it in the hope that others in the trades -- or anyone hiring this company -- understand what kind of behavior they might be dealing with.

David came recommended to us through a friend who is an award winning decorator - she blessed us with David & his Better Life Construction business recommendation. We did not have formal "plans" - we had an awesome designer, Ben La-Haise w/Dixieline in Del Mar, put together our wishes (he did all the measuring and layout and worked with us to order custom cabinets, tile, sent us directly to the faucet & fixtures company, and ordered us the perfect medicine/mirror set up). David improved upon our design, found creative solutions to flush mount the mirror set-up, has the best glass contractor (our glass shower doors & walls are over 9 feet tall), and made sure that our triple closet door looked like it had always been there mounted flush with the floor and trimmed every area worked in perfectly. David and his crew also rolled all my carpet back in the master bedroom and got rid of all the squeaky spots in the 2nd story floor - wow! The finished product was so well put together, thought out, finished on time, within budget - no hidden expenses appearing - it was our easiest project ever. David & his crew were always on-time, notified us in advance of their schedule, working other jobs at the same time and keeping all of his customers happy. I almost don't want to share this information - I know he will just get more business and I have more projects haha David is a devoted family man, his employees & contractors are as respectful, responsible, and reliable as David. Honesty, integrity, patience, and professionalism are qualities that have become all too rare,…read morewhich is why Fabian deserves this review. During a stressful situation, he remained calm, communicated clearly, and gave me the confidence to understand an important part of my own home's plumbing system. Instead of taking advantage of my vulnerability as a single woman homeowner or creating an unnecessary service call, he chose to educate me. That kind of character is priceless! I received an emergency alert from Rancho Water stating that water had been running continuously somewhere on my property. I immediately became concerned and called Fabian, who had previously helped with some plumbing work during a mold remediation project. Rather than telling me he needed to come out, Fabian patiently walked me through the entire process over the phone. He helped me locate my water meter, explained how to read it to confirm there was a leak, and then guided me step-by-step through shutting off the appropriate water valves. Within minutes, we discovered the problem wasn't inside my home at all--it was my outdoor irrigation system. Fabian then explained that I simply needed to contact an irrigation specialist. He even said, "I don't want to drive all the way to Temecula and charge you just to turn off that valve." In a world where it sometimes feels like everyone is looking for the next billable hour, Fabian chose honesty over profit. He treated me with respect, empowered me with knowledge, and earned my trust. I recommend him without hesitation and will gladly call him again whenever I need a plumber. THANK YOU FABIAN!!!
