Many things have changed since the last time I have been here including a major increase in their prices. It didn't seem to have the same vibe and the redecorating was not what you would expect in a public restaurant. However, the restaurant was clean and the menu was extensive. We had the Alambres Steak strips (way too much salt) with onion, bell pepper and cheese, served with tortillas, guacamole and a minuscule amount of beans in addition to an order of nachos. The quality of the food was very good. The ingredients were fresh and the guacamole was seasoned perfectly. My only suggestion would be a lot less salt would be preferable. If it was just based on service - Zac was so friendly - and fun decor, I'd give it 5 stars. But most of the food was so-so. The basket of chips were thick and crispy, which I liked, but the green salsa tasted oily and the red salsa had heat but no flavor... both meh. Portions are large. I had pork quesadilla: hardly any cheese and the pork tasted old and dry. Not sure what my friend ordered, but it was okay. I liked my margarita. It came in a large, fun martini glass. What should you get here? Nachos Number Three with Steak! Thank me later :) Think tortilla chips, melted cheese, refried beans, sour cream and guacamole. There are three different versions of nachos on their menu- but honestly--number three is the only way to fly! The steak was so good too. And they were nice and cheesy! Good cheese pulls for sure. I also really loved the Pina Colada that I had. It was served in a huge martini shaped glass. While my friends all loved their margaritas, I went with the pina colada and it was perfect. The front of the building is vivid and colorful and it seems like there is lots of street parking around the restaurant. It's also in a more quiet area of New Haven. My first here was amazing and definitely a return I didn't take pics of my food but I had the shrimp burrito it was good. One of my friend's had the steak quesadillas and the other had the stuff pepper. Everyone was pleased one had wine and two of us had frozen margaritas. We had the chips and dip sauce from the house but ordered the nachos too. Was looking for an authentic Mexican place for a Saturday night in New Haven. Originally picked another place but switched it up at the last minute based off of a recommendation on Facebook. I wish we hadn't. Even though it wasn't that busy it took a long time before we were seen and longer for water to be brought out. Refills were so slow we drank out of a bottle from my wife's purse. Especially tough because the salsa that came out with the chips was closer to hot sauce than that. It was flavorful but spicy. And while I can't put my finger on it the chips missed the mark. To be honest they lost at least 1-2 stars before our food got to the table. For dinner I got the chorizqueso which was hard and congealed and a chili relleno in a flavorless sauce. It didn't blow my mind away but a cool place to come if you want some Mexican food. I just think the food could be more flavorful, though the ceviche was definitely quite flavorful. We had to ask for a drink menu upon arrival. We each ordered the margarita tradicional... our glasses were deceivingly large, filled with mostly ice and minimal tequila. I had a wonderful experience at Mezcal in the East Rock section of New Haven this past weekend. The ambiance is super authentic, and we were greeted heartily as soon as we walked in. We promptly ordered drinks - my boyfriend had a mango mojito and I had a frozen strawberry margarita. There wasn't much alcohol in my drink but it still tasted heavenly. We then ordered the nachos, and those were my favorite part of the meal. I genuinely think those were the best nachos I've ever had. For dinner, I had the chicken tacos and my boyfriend had the chimichanga. We left the restaurant stuffed and still had heaps of leftovers. This is only a review for drinks, not food service. My husband and I popped in here last night for a quick couple of drinks after attending a Yelp Elite event down the road. It was a nice night out, so we walked there and stumbled upon this place. As soon as we walked in, I was rather surprised, this place was pretty bumpin' for a Tuesday night. We sat at a little table next to the bar, there aren't seats at the bars itself. We each had two authentic Mezcal drinks and the service was friendly and prompt. Service was good overall except bringing the nacho appetizer after the entree. We went for lunch on a Tuesday. The "complementary" chips were hard, greasy and ice cold with no flavor. Had to ask for them to be heated up (which they did). The salsa verde was sour and evidently the only choice (I would have preferred a tomato salsa or guacamole but it wasn't offered). The glass and silverware appeared to be dirty too making everything that much less appetizing. We both ordered some form of beef tacos. I had mine with refried beans and some kind of rice. The rice was cold and inedible and the refried beans were flavorless and room temperature. The tacos were just warm- not nearly the temperature you'd expect them to be to kill off any bacteria lurking around. The beef was also greasy. Neither of us came close to finishing anything it was that bad. We were the only two people in the restaurant. The main service person spent most of his time paying attention to his phone while we could hear giddy little girls in the kitchen having a bunch of fun at the expense of our lunches. This place has received positive reviews in the past. I'm not all sure how. My suggestion to them is to buy an instant read thermometer, get off the phone during working hours and pay attention to your food and customers. I'd recommend giving this one a miss. read more

Worst experience so far in any New Haven restaurant I've been to. First we stood in the doorway for about 15 minutes before anyone would seat us. The menu was traditional so I'd you like Taco Bell go to Taco Bell. The décor is colorful and visual. I ordered a Rita on the rocks. Very smooth and went down too easy. The complimentary chips are a thick style chip which varies by taste preference but the green salsa served with them is so good and spicy! I ordered the chicken verde enchiladas. Absolutely fantastic! The chicken was moist, tender and the perfect compliment . The verde sauce was light and the perfect amount. I will be back to this hidden gem!! read more

I have never in my life been so disgusted by a restaurant experience in my entire life. My daughter has a severe peanut allergy. We have been regular and always satisfied patrons of this restaurant for years. Tonight was different. We ordered a beverage and when the waiter returned we asked about peanuts in their kitchen. We ask EVERY TIME. They always say no. This was the first time they said there are peanuts in the mole. When we were informed there were peanuts we said said that we could not stay as we now knew there were peanuts in the restaurant. They brought out the beverage and it had been made incorrectly and it was sent back. They brought out a second drink and at that point informed us there were peanuts in the kitchen. They charged my peanut allergy daughter for a frozen mango drink when she could not drink it and I explained that due to allergies she felt unsafe in the establishment. I'm raising my 13 year old to self advocate and make choices based on current fact. The waiter told me it was my fault because I'd ordered before and still charged me. I asked for the manager's number. He asked if I was looking for a date. I told him I would not be back and he said "we don't want you back." Waiter also wore PPE below his nose and said he has a doctor'a note for his asthma and doesn't have to wear a mask properly to wait tables. He then mocked me for breathing heavily in my mask and asked if I needed to sit down because I was hyperventilating. I tried to point out that this was a matter of personal safety and he threatened to call the police on me if I didn't leave. I am utterly disgusted and shocked as we have otherwise had great experiences there before today. read more

So I didn't even want mexican tonight but my boyfriend wanted margaritas and my coworkers always rave about this place so why not. As always free chips and salsa, very spicy salsa and its the real mexican style salsa not the stuff you get at like on the border. We also got the ceviche de camerones and it was delicious. For entrees i got the carnitas and my boyfriend the pescado apanisado. Both were fantastic. Someone mentioned previously the carnitas has no flavor well I must've came on the right night! Because mine was all flavor, and I'm mad after trying to replicate a good carnitas at home I still cannot get that flavor. My boyfriends fish he loved, he basically licked his plate. Overall very good mexican food, great service, and reasonable prices compared to like puerto vallarta or geronimos which is very overpriced and not that good. We will be back for sure! read more
