Of course Birria is messy and eating it in the car can be a challenge but we are up for the challenge! Over the last year, we have been on a birria kick. We've driven by the Food Truck Paradise so many times & finally, at long last, we decided to check it out. I'm so glad we did. It's such a great lil stretch of food trucks along the water. So many options, all of which specialize in different kinds of Latin American food. There's plenty of parking along the stretch. It's worth getting out & walking down the line of trucks to check out the options. There are no real tables or facilities, though. We noticed a few portable bathrooms, but they were locked. The food from Ixtapa was delicious & affordable. They made me an excellent elote, & I appreciate that they stabbed it with a stick so that eating it was a neater, cleaner experience. The meat was only around the edges of the tacos, giving the illusion that they were filled, but the inside was mostly empty. I also ordered a jamaica drink, and it was served warm. I love this taco truck. We live in Rhode Island and try to stop by about every month. Tacos are $2. My favorite thing to order from here is the lingua nachos. The meat is so tender and the freshly fried tortilla chips totally blow those food chains out of the water. It's $10 for a huge square styrofoam container. It comes topped with grilled onions, grilled jalapeños, sour cream, guacamole, refried beans, radish slices, shredded cheese. If you have a particular large order they'll give you a beeper to alert you when the order is ready ( maybe it's given out every order but we always get about $30 worth of food). Grab some Mexican bottled sodas. Tons of flavors - tamarind, champagne kola, pineapple, apple, lime, orange, fruit punch, mango, etc) Come by (bring a jacket. Always breezy here). Located in Food Truck Paradise in New Haven. This is a stretch of food trucks right off I-95. It's right on the waterfront, but they havent developed this area so there's no proper picnic area or bathroom facilities. They used to have generators in each truck, but the city built connections directly to the grid. This was a great addition because it reduced the noise/smell/smog from the generators. There are a ton of taco trucks and some other latin options (cuban, puerto rican). Ixtapa is one of the more consistent trucks with good prices. We usually make a pitstop here and enjoy the tacos every time. I wish they would improve the waterfront with proper seating areas, otherwise highly recommend stopping next time you are in the area. read more

Food Truck Paradise is a stretch of food trucks that have lined up daily in New Haven, Connecticut since 1960. Every day as many as 29 food trucks can be found along Long Wharf Drive: a majority of them serving some form of Latinx cuisine. The Sweeney's Hot Dog truck, owned by Bob Sweeney, is often credited as the first truck to begin parking along the stretch all those many years ago... and it's still showing up today. By 2017, the stretch of road was becoming crowded with too many trucks. The city set up a special vending program as well as a lottery for licenses. Power hookups were also built along the street in order to eliminate the need for noisy generators. Each vendor pays $3,000 a year for a reserved spot and electricity. Plans are underway to build a permanent waterfront promenade on Long Wharf with benches, a bathroom facility, and picnic tables for customers. In addition to Long Wharf, New Haven also has additional designated food cart districts along Cedar Street (in front of the Yale School of Medicine), Sachem Street (in front of Ingalls Rink), and a downtown zone by the New Haven Green. My family and I visited Food Truck Paradise this past August. I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've lived in New Haven all my life and this was my first visit to the stretch of food trucks. For as long as I can remember, there have always been food trucks parked here... since way before food trucks became the 'gourmet restaurants-on-wheels' as we know them today. I stopped at the 'Sandwiches El Cubano' truck and ordered their "Original Cuban Sandwich" (ham, roast pork, Swiss cheese, pickles, mayo, mustard, Italian bread). My wife and son stopped at the 'Ixtapa' truck and ordered their "Chicken Tacos" as well as their "Nachos" platter. We also grabbed a couple of Mexican sodas and had a picnic lunch across the street by the water. Everything was so delicious and authentic! This may have been our first trip to Food Truck Paradise but it certainly won't be our last! read more

Ixtapa is still one of the more solid options in New Haven, but after an additional visit, I would stick with the barbacoa & al pastor tacos, as the carne asada is less consistent. while checking directions, saw this location, so decided to stop by. Parked and walked around to see which truck I should visit... majority of all the trucks offered the same/similar products... I did walk around but went with Ixtapa Mexican Tacos as they had people lined up. I looked at the menu and went with: - taco birria tacos - al pastor taco The seasoning of both were lacking. I expected the meats to be over seasoned at least, but it was not. The al pastor taco was decent, sorry to say it, but had better al pastor tacos. The meat chunks in birria was awesome, it was cooked perfectly, meat broke off easily... only draw back, the seasoning was lacking. The meat was very bland and unfortunately the cheese did not really help to enhance the overall flavor. The dipping sauce also lacked the flavors as well. Overall, good place to walk around, do food taste tour. Parking was free as well. read more

We absolutely love this taco truck. Hands down one of my favorite trucks on the water. They almost always have a line and serve people up until closing (some trucks stop taking orders 10-15 before closing). My wife and I come here every Thursday for Taco Thursday and while we want to venture out and try a new truck, this one is so good that we can't do it!! We get the same order: six carnitas tacos (2 a pop) and an order of birria tacos (10 bucks) and it never disappoints. Their grilled onions and veggies were especially on point today. We add them to the tacos, sprinkle lime on it, and add both green and red salsa on top. Best tacos you'll ever have (in CT. I used to live in LA so the disclaimer is necessary). The birria meat is always juicy and tasty and while I never eat the stew, I hear it's good too I can't recommend this place enough! Just look for the birria flags on the truck! This one had the most people waiting in line, they must know what's up. Not bad, about 10 minutes to get three tacos (1 asada, 1 pastor, and 1 chorizo). THREE BUCKS EACH including tax. They had a sign announcing the new higher prices. This is still HALF or less of what local restaurants are charging. These were all great! Keep some wet wipes handy because you WILL get hot sauce or jalapeño residue on your fingers. They also have coolers full of Mexican coke, Jarritos, other drinks. Good stuff. read more

My wife and I recently moved to this area and we were excited to check out this food truck paradise area. As we strolled along the street looking at several food trucks we decided to order from this red truck. I didn't look at any reviews but this placed smelled good and there were more people coming to this spot as well. The man who took our orders was super nice and when we asked for his recommendation he said Tacos de Birria. We got that along with pork quesadillas. Both were extremely delicious but the tacos de birria was the highlight for sure. Dipping the tacos in the soup was so yummy and the volume was pretty good for its price. Stopped here today for the first time! I cannot believe what I've been missing! At 11:30am on a Saturday they already had a line of 10 people or so but it moves very quickly. I ordered two tacos - one carnitas and one carne asada. Both were absolutely simple and delicious. True authentic Tacos. They were served with a couple cold cucumber slices and several lime wedges. The fresh squeezed lime on these tacos puts them over the top. I also tried some of the salsas they offered and all of them were good with varying levels of spice. I will definitely going back! Damn good tacos. Great other food though, but you can get seriously full for probably less money on the tacos. They give a little extra touch here compared to some of the other food trucks nearby. The corn tortillas might be made in house. The reduced onions and radish is a great touch on top of the rest of the taco. Good Tacos and very convenient! Ordered three tacos (Pastor, Carnitas and Asada), and it came with all the fixings - not sure if I got it all but included onions, cilantro, pepper, lime, onions and radishes. The tacos were excellent - had better in the west coast, but pretty good for the north east. The meat was flavorful and juicy and the sauces/salsas they provided added some nice kick. The Pastor doesn't have the nice char that would've made it even better, but the flavor was great (although lacking that bit of a crisp taste that would have been nice). The tacos came to $2/taco and although there was a line, it moved pretty quickly. They accept credit cards in case you don't have cash. We tried the same tacos from another truck next to this one to do a comparison and this one definitely came out the winner. These stayed intact and didn't get soggy. It was interesting to see that the long lines seemed to rotate from different trucks so following the crowd may not always get you to the "best". There were porta potties all around, however every one that I saw was locked (we went early October 2020). read more

The food has always impressed me, especially their homemade salsa. My go-to are the fajitas, in my opinion no place does them better. My only issue with this place is the slow service. If you're a New Englander who finds themselves cruising along 95 regularly, you've likely seen that cute train of taco stands along the water just off the highway in New Haven, CT. It's right along Long Wharf Drive. I've had many excuses for not stopping over the years (just ate in NYC, had finally gotten out of NYC traffic and just couldn't be bothered to stop again, zoned out and saw them in the rear view mirror wondering if I could easily turn around) but now I never forget to stop in for at least a taco or two. It is such an easy on and off the highway too. This place is about as close as you'll get to a nice SoCal tasty taco stand in the Northeast. Don't try to ruin the experience by ordering like you're at Chipotle. Most of the menus are in Spanish, but the guys are always friendly and more than welcoming to those not familiar.
