A friend recommended I try MofonGo in New Haven, and boy, was it good! If you're gonna do mofongo, go big, so I went with "The Overload", half Spanish rice and half mofongo topped with Adobo chicken, salsa, and chimichurri sauce...oh and a papa rellenos on the side (mashed potatoes filled with ground beef). Soo yummy! The portion was a good amount, I could not eat it all. Bonus: leftovers for dinner! Also, this place is in the old Anna Liffey's basement!!! Brings back memories! It's small and quiet inside. More of a grab and go or grab and sit and eat type place.

Was lured in by the music at doorway, and surprisingly found this cute spot tucked downstairs. The lady taking orders acknowledged us immediately and let us know she'd be with us shortly. We ordered the yellow rice and pernil (shredded pork) with Chimichurri which was good. The pork and rice were flavorful but the rice was a bit mushier than my liking. The yellow rice and Chicharron de Pollo (Crispy Fried Chicken), was good but pretty standard. The empeñada was really good it was flakey and crisp on the outside but the meat was full of flavor and tender inside. Everything was fairly priced, and portions were large.

Stopped here for a quick lunch before a Yale tour. Staff was fantastic!! Guided us through the options and gave us a sample. Food was fantastic and full of flavor!! Portions were amazing we left stuffed! Recommend everyone stop in before or after your campus tour if you're ever in New Haven

Love this little spot. When you walk by the actual restaurant you're greeted with a deep stairway down into the place and it's so fun. The walls have cute art on them too and the inside of the establishment is very cool. Kinda industrial. Service was tricky because we both did not speak the same language but that did not matter, the workers were very kind and patient. My friend got their empanadas. They were fresh and crispy and pretty good. Me and my other friend got the same thing, the fried pork rice bowl. It was amazing. The flavors all came together and the portion size was extremely generous. Fun lil spot!

I went there for lunch and with an appetite. I ordered the rice bowl with pernil (pork shoulder) and it came loaded with your choice of rice (I chose yellow), beans and I added the 3 maduros (fried plantains) for $1 extra. The chimichurri sauce, pico de gallo tomato and onion mix, and mayoketchu (mayonnaise and ketchup mix) was all added on top and you can also choose to add it on the side. My plate cost me about $15 and it was well worth it! The meat was tender and soft, and the rice... it was so moist and delicious! I can't stand being served dry rice anywhere and I was so happy that this was delicious. The addition of the sauces added layers of flavor. I couldn't even finish it all. Oh, and don't let me forget to mention that the woman who served us brought us a sample of the mofongo on the side, on the house. A hit of mofongo, rice, beans and pernil all on one fork will send you to cloud 9 for sure. I will definitely be coming back here and would recommend it to anybody!

When I went is was the second week after opening. My wife and I tried the trifongo. Let me tell you after trying trying the trifongo you will never want a regular mofongo. The sweet plain tins make the meal 10 times better. The portion was great and the price was reasonable. Definitely plan on going back. It's great to see a Puerto Rican restaurant have a new spin on traditional food.

Amazing food! So happy to have an authentic Puerto Rican spot in New Haven! It's beautiful inside! Went during the soft opening, can't wait to see it at its full potential. My personal preference is I wish the canoes had shredded cheese instead of thick mozzarella but that's just me. I try and stay away from dairy but it still went down! Everything is delicious! Portions were HUGE!

The shrimp mofongo was to DIE FOR! Can't wait to come back and try the other foods, like the Puerto Rican finger foods.

Not the best experience…read more The service was quick, their truck seems clean. However there's room for improvement. We ordered the Tripleta sandwich which is three meats: chicken, beef and ham with signature ketchup. That was delicious. Price 13.00 I ordered just Mofongo. Very disappointed. They didn't put any pork rinds on it as traditional Mofongo calls for. Price 8.00 for crushed plantains with garlic? Meh at least should of had some lettuce and tomato on the side. Per drinks, their offerings were very limited and if you want Piña Colada (no alcohol) you will pay 8.00. Overpriced. People go to food trucks to do something different and get a taste of their island. However, just because it is a truck, and a business you shouldn't cut corners like this. Not memorable. Take away. The guy that took my order was really nice. Would I drive to New Haven again to stop here. NO.

While there are normally two sizes to choose from, today was just the large size for $10. To be honest, at first I was very ticked that we had to wait so long for our food. Compared to other trucks at this festival, FBT was going particularly slowly, it seemed. However, the wait was worth it. The tripleta was probably my favorite thing we had the whole event. Admittedly, I've never had a tripleta before today, but I loved the flavors of the three meats (ham, pork, and steak) and the mayo+ketchup combination. I didn't want to share! We were also the only people ordering who ordered in English, too, if that's any indication for authenticity.

The large combo platter comprises your choice of seven dishes, the medium platter is five choices, and the small is three. The five items depicted in my photo of my medium-size plate are, clockwise from the top, grilled tofu, steamed broccoli, baked sweet potatoes, sautéed green beans with red peppers, and curried potatoes. The above descriptions double as the simple names of the dishes. The food does not masquerade behind pretentious titles, nor does it appear flamboyant or pretend to be fanciful. What you're served are affordable and generous portions of delicious and nutritious food. Real food. Americans call this natural food. In the Rasta lexicon, natural foods are redefined as Ital foods. As you might adduce from the photo, the café's two owners are Rastas, and their cuisine is authentic Jamaican Rastafari Ital. "Ital" is derived from the word "vital." To provide "vitality," Ital food on your plate differs little from how it looks on the farm. Ital food is usually vegan, but not always. Only four of the five Rasta cafés in Connecticut and nearby Worcester are strictly vegan. As there is no Board of Ital Cuisine to issue certifications, Ital cooking does vary with the territory. The Ital food served at Caribbean Style Vegan is, as its name attests, always vegan. It also is always nourishing, colorful, and skillfully prepared. Nothing is ever too spicy or too salty or too sweet or too oily or overcooked or undercooked. Grilled in a spicy barbecue sauce, even the jerk tofu is humanely spiced. With just the medium platters, I always feel satiated but never bloated, evidence of the frugal use or total absence of oil. Never drowned in oily sauces, the veggies remain visually recognizable and inherently flavorful. Caribbean Style Vegan stands as my favorite of the seven Ital cafés in which I have dined both stateside and in Jamaica. At the two Ital cafés that I visited in Kingston, neither served any mock meats. Yet at some cafés in the U.S., their varieties of mock meats almost equal their numbers of veggie dishes. I am mystified that in our corner of New England they serve so many highly processed mock meats, a concession to the American lust for meat. In contrast, Caribbean Style Vegan upholds a higher standard. It serves only a single mock meat. Grains, beans, greens, and root vegetables predominate. Most veggies are steamed; a few are sautéed; none are deep-fried. My kind of food. For in-house dining, you'll find two sunlit tables along the south-facing wall of plate glass window. Still, the café is more conducive for takeout. I have witnessed a steady flow of regular customers who sometimes place multiple orders of takeout meals to deliver to their families waiting at home. Yet even when other customers wait in line with you, the wait is always short. Their social media accounts is seldom updated. So view only their website. Yet, the website menu is viewable only during open hours. To place an online order or simply to view the website menu, you must wait until 12 noon, Wednesday to Saturday.
