I also wasn't much of a meat eater back in those days, so I mostly had tried their sides. Now we're both on keto, so we go for just the meat. The meat was some of the best I've had lately! If I had one criticism, the brisket was just the slightest bit dry, but it had the perfect amount of fat to still make it taste good, and the smoky flavor was perfect! The turkey was moist, and probably my favorite part of the meal. We didn't order sides, but the included pickles were better than standard. It was rainy when we went there, so everyone was packed inside. There were barely enough tables. Their outside seating is not covered. There was no line, and my husband had finished our order by the time I had shaken out my umbrella. The air conditioning was a little too cold for a rainy day. The parking lot is all designated handicapped parking, but we got street parking right next to the building. Since we live on the east side, Micklethwait is convenient, and it has earned a place among our favorite places to go eat!

The weather was unbearably hot which also affected our visit because we couldn't eat outside. The issue: The dining room is small and can only hold so many people. We ordered quickly and the food was ready almost immediately. But we had no where to sit! So we stood there with food in hand (kinda in the way of the workers and other patrons) waiting for people to vacate. Part of the problem was there were two tables occupied without any food and they were just talking. At other places, this is awesome. But a place with limited seating: nope! So our food was cold and the grits congealed while we waited to sit down. The service: all of the staff we interacted with were kind, friendly, and helpful. They were a highlight of our visit. The sides: We had the Green Chili Grits and the Potato Salad. Both were excellent but the potato salad was maybe the best I've ever had. For me, it was perfection because it wasn't too "wet" and the dill was just a fantastic add. The meats: We had the beef brisket and the sausage. Both were very good. I preferred the sausage but maybe just got a less than perfect piece of the brisket. The parking: also not great. There is street parking but also a back lot they direct you to off of Springdale. But they don't really have a safe/marked path to get you to the building. Just loose gravel where you're at risk of an ankle sprain. Maybe they will consider expanding the inside space? That would really help. I'd still come back because the food was really fantastic, but only for take out where I wouldn't have to deal with parking or finding/waiting for a table.

But unfortunately the BBQ, which should be the star of the show, just didn't quite hit the mark for me. I came in hoping to try one of their lunch specials, only to find out they had recently discontinued them. I almost left but the staff kindly honored the deal anyway, which definitely turned things around in the moment. I ordered the chopped beef sandwich with garlic parmesan fries. While the food wasn't bad, it lacked the depth of flavor I expect from Central Texas BBQ. Even with sauce it didn't deliver that rich smokiness or bold seasoning I'm used to. That said, maybe I just chose the wrong dish. Their menu does have some intriguing options like crispy duck, ribs, an elk burger, and a full bar. I might give them another try during happy hour or if I'm nearby, but I wouldn't make a special trip just for the BBQ.

I'm partial to baby back over spare ribs. Brisket was decent. Fatty slices were much better than the lean. Sausages were a star. Both were moist and great amount of fat. Pickles and red onion were a nice touch. Overall, a different spot than the norm and worth a visit. Prices are by the half pound and generous.

Meat--The meat was on the dry side, but not too dry. The meat had a LOT of fat on it to be so dry. Still very good though, great flavor and great crust. Very tasty. Sauce-very good. Balanced sweet and tangy, not on the sweet side, really likes it. Sides-I got green beans, they were not from a can, field fresh, definitely not overcooked, might could use a little more cooking. Nicely seasoned but could use a little salt. I also got Mac n cheese and it was good, I've had better but it was a nice flavor and I got a piece of toasty crust which I like and it was good. Dessert- I got peach Cobbler. I didn't like the crust. It's a cake-like crust and I prefer the pie like crust. The peaches were fresh and not from a can, not overly sweet, good flavor, but again, no cake for me. They don't have Coke Zero only Diet Coke. I did go inside to use the restroom. I like a bbq place to smell like a bbq place. This one had a stale restaurant stay.
