Luckily, there was no line, so I was able to order right away. Both the indoor and outdoor seating areas are really nice. If I hadn't been on the road, I probably would have stayed and hung out a little longer, but I ended up getting takeout instead. The Tex-Czech sausage was one of the most delicious sausages I've had at a BBQ restaurant. I absolutely loved the melted cheese inside the sausage. The brisket also hit the spot, and the sauce was amazing. My only wish, or small complaint, is the portion size. It feels like shrinkflation may be part of it, and it's definitely not cheap. But for a once-in-a-while treat, Micklethwait is absolutely worth it.

This spot was a standout on our Austin BBQ tour and completely lived up to the hype. The brisket and sausage were both incredible, but the brisket especially stole the show. It was easily my favorite in Austin. The bark had the perfect texture and flavor, while the meat itself stayed unbelievably juicy and tender. Every bite was exactly what you hope for when you think of great Texas BBQ. The sausage was just as impressive, packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. You can tell there's real attention to detail here! If you're putting together a BBQ tour in Austin, this place deserves a spot on your list. Part of me wants to gatekeep it, but it's just too good not to recommend!!

But unfortunately the BBQ, which should be the star of the show, just didn't quite hit the mark for me. I came in hoping to try one of their lunch specials, only to find out they had recently discontinued them. I almost left but the staff kindly honored the deal anyway, which definitely turned things around in the moment. I ordered the chopped beef sandwich with garlic parmesan fries. While the food wasn't bad, it lacked the depth of flavor I expect from Central Texas BBQ. Even with sauce it didn't deliver that rich smokiness or bold seasoning I'm used to. That said, maybe I just chose the wrong dish. Their menu does have some intriguing options like crispy duck, ribs, an elk burger, and a full bar. I might give them another try during happy hour or if I'm nearby, but I wouldn't make a special trip just for the BBQ.

I'm partial to baby back over spare ribs. Brisket was decent. Fatty slices were much better than the lean. Sausages were a star. Both were moist and great amount of fat. Pickles and red onion were a nice touch. Overall, a different spot than the norm and worth a visit. Prices are by the half pound and generous.
