After waiting at least 15 min for her to show up from the back, I was able to ask her to change my drink order. The food here is FABULOUS. We got the housemade Irish soda bread and it was amazing. Hubby got the shepherd's pie and it was delicious. I got the lamb chops over asparagus and mashed potatoes and it was FANTASTIC ! I don't know if our waitress was new or what, but our meals were delivered without silverware. We waited several minutes, then finally flagged down another waitress so that we could eat ! If it wasn't for the poor service, this place could easily be 5 stars due to the fabulous food. Thankfully we got out of there before the live music started, loud music is not our vibe. At the very end of the meal, somehow my original drink order made an appearance (that's what I was afraid of, that she didn't cancel the order). The folks at the table next to us ordered the exact same cocktail, so when the bar tried to give it to us, the waitress told them to give it to the table next to us instead. Geez, we were already paying for our meal at the time. Lol The manager did come out and the end of the meal to ask how things were. I did mention I thought our waitress might be new. I didn't get an answer as to if she was, but I posed it more as a statement than a question.

The bi-level bar and lounge was dark, swanky, and seductive. It would make an excellent spot for dates or groups of friends, like mine. We started off sitting at the bar, as there were no large tables available upon our arrival. However, after about 15 minutes, the host approached to tell us that he could actually seat us. I picked up my glass, which was wet with condensation, and it slipped out of my hands. I was able to collect it with only a minor spill, but the host insisted that the bar staff make me a new cocktail in case the glass had chipped at all. It was a considerate gesture that I greatly appreciated. Plus, since I had already taken a few sips, I was thrilled to get those back in a new glass! In terms of my cocktail of choice, I had opted for the Hot Tijuana Tease, a fiery blend of mezcal, blanco tequila, chile poblano liqueur, and lime juice. So, it was essentially a spicy margarita, and it was excellent. There were clean, crisp notes of peppery heat balanced with layers of robust smoke. My only complaint about the lounge was that the bathrooms were beyond tiny. There were two unisex stalls in a very tight alcove that also included a cramped sink counter. It was awkward and uncomfortable to share that space with another patron. Aside from that, the Hide Rooftop was a beautiful place with a friendly staff and interesting drinks.

I recently dined at Meximodu that my friends took me based on a glowing recommendation from her friend, and my initial impression was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The grandeur of the bar and the mesmerizing Día de los Muertos-themed face painting created an inviting and culturally rich atmosphere. I didn't know about dia De Los Muertos before and I learned after the visit. It was fascinating to learn that the theme centered around celebrating life and death as intertwined parts of existence. Arriving fifteen minutes early, we found the restaurant bustling with patrons. Despite the availability of some outdoor tables, it seemed there was a bit of a wait due to a shortage of waitstaff. Eventually, we were seated at a fantastic table with a clear view of the elaborate bar and its striking mural, which I found absolutely captivating. Our drink choices included the Jalapeño Margarita and Guava Margarita, both of which were expertly crafted and delightfully refreshing. The accompanying chips and assortment of dips--including a spicy orange concoction and creamy avocado--were a hit. Opting to skip entrees, we indulged in an array of appetizers: Avocado Salad, Maximindo Salad, Esquites, Coliflor Tacos, and Tropical Tacos. Each dish was a burst of flavor, perfectly complementing the exquisite cocktails. However, the service was a mixed bag. Our server, Isabelle, although knowledgeable, tended to over-explain billing details which somewhat dampened our spirits. This happened multiple times, from extra tortillas to the nuances of ordering additional avocado. Dessert was our biggest letdown. The chocolate lava cake, unexpectedly spicy, was an unusual twist that didn't quite hit the mark for us. We ended up enjoying just the ice cream and leaving the cake behind. In summary, while the ambiance at Meximodu is exceptional and the drinks are a highlight, the service and some aspects of the food could benefit from refinement. I would return for the atmosphere and hope for smoother service and more consistent culinary delights in the future. read more

I'm only leaving this review because my server tonight, Kevin, brought up giving him a review several times. Tonight was my boyfriend's birthday. Being a January baby, he's often had meh birthdays, so I thought let's go to Meximodo, it's one of our favorite places. Started off well enough. The appetizer came out in a decent amount of time. The drinks were a little slow but they were made well so we looked past it. After that, it was down hill. I made it a point to let our server, Kevin, know it was his birthday after I saw another table get the happy birthday sparklers from all the servers. After seeing 3 birthdays acknowledge it was time for the dessert menu. We ordered dessert and were told "I'll give you the tres leches for free if you give me a good review". I wrongfully assumed it was that the tres leches was the birthday cake, and thought it was above and beyond that it would be what we would be celebrating with. I was wildly incorrect. After it was brought out, 27 minutes later (yes, I counted) and no acknowledgment, I realized I was incorrect. The tres leches was the driest cake I've ever had in my life, in a shallow puddle of what assume was the tres leches that should be inside the cake. Then I watched the table next to us get the servers brining them the birthday sparklers After I got his attention and pointed out I told him it was my boyfriends birthday, he acknowledged it like he was aware and said why were coming, I told him a little too late and to bring the check. Instead I got a half assed birthday song by the servers with sparklers and what started out as 2 shots, though one spilled next to the birthday boy before they could be passed out. So, Kevin, this is what happens when you push for reviews then deliver subpar service. It's only getting 3 stars because the food and drinks were good, albeit slow to arrive. read more

I recently visited Meximodo in Metuchen, NJ, and it's a fantastic spot for modern Mexican cuisine with a fun, lively vibe! The atmosphere is vibrant, with colorful decor and a cozy outdoor seating area equipped with heating lamps, perfect for chilly evenings. The menu offers a great mix of traditional Mexican dishes with a contemporary twist. I tried the Birria Tacos and Elote, both of which were flavorful and well-prepared. Their guacamole was fresh and paired beautifully with house-made chips. The star of the experience, however, was their extensive tequila and mezcal selection. The cocktails were expertly crafted--I highly recommend the Mezcal Paloma. Service was attentive, though it took a bit longer than expected to get our food during the dinner rush. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks, which was a plus. While the food was delicious overall, a few dishes lacked the bold flavors I was expecting, which is why I didn't give a full five stars. That said, the unique cocktails and inviting ambiance make this a must-visit spot for Mexican food and drinks in the area. Pros: * Vibrant and modern atmosphere * Great selection of tequila and mezcal * Fresh and flavorful dishes * Outdoor seating available Cons: * Service can be slow during peak hours * Some dishes could use a bit more seasoning I'll definitely be back for the drinks and to try more of their menu! read more

Disappointing Experience - Not Worth the Hype As a Metuchen resident, I had heard mixed reviews about Meximodo from neighbors and local business owners, so I hadn't rushed to try it. We finally decided to give it a shot on 6/27/25, but unfortunately, the experience was deeply underwhelming. The customer service was particularly disappointing--disorganized and unhelpful. I followed up by emailing management and received a response the next day (6/28) from Noel, who offered a gift card to encourage us to give the restaurant another try. However, they never followed through. A promise made and then ignored. It's unfortunate when poor service seems to reflect a broader issue with leadership. With so many other great dining options in Metuchen, I'll be supporting places that follow through and value their customers. read more

We had heard a lot of good things about this place, so we were looking forward to trying it,…read moreespecially since we haven't found too many good Mexican restaurants nearby. I ordered the cheese empanadas, but unfortunately they weren't for me. The oil tasted a little stale, and I felt like I was tasting more dough than cheese. My husband got a burrito, but his was quite salty, so he wasn't able to enjoy much of it either. The place also felt a bit loud for us with the music and TVs going at the same time. I understand that may be the vibe they're going for, but combined with not enjoying our food, we just didn't feel like sitting there much longer. We tried our food, left most of it, paid the bill, and headed out. We didn't say anything at the time because we thought maybe we just caught them on an off day. Since it's downtown and we had to pay for garage parking as well, I'm not sure we would make another trip back. I really wanted to like this place based on what we had heard, so I wish our first experience had been better.

This time I called before I went, to find out the lunch special, and I was hung up on 3 times. I could hear someone on the line, but they didn't speak. My daughter and I decided to go anyway to see what was included in the special for the day. We ordered two drink specials, a lunch special, and an item on the lunch menu. The bartender took care of us as there weren't that many people in the restaurant. The food was really good, but then when it was time to pay, the server/bartender tried to make us pay regular dinner price for an item on the lunch menu. We ordered straight off the iPad with her help, but when it was time to pay, she tried to say the items weren't available even though we had showed her what we wanted directly from the IPad photo menu. She said we'd have to wait 20 minutes for a manager to help us. When the manager arrived (from another room), the server tried to say that the item wasn't available and then she tried to say that we had ordered a different meal than what was shown. It took us about 20 minutes to have our bill adjusted. Even though the food was very good, the customer service was not good in the least.

They do not skimp on the shrimp like a lot of places do, AT ALL. Also, the sauces that come with it are awesome. I started with a drink that was just okay, nothing special, but not terrible either. For an appetizer, we ordered the octopus, and unfortunately it was not good. The sauce didn't taste great, and the octopus itself didn't taste great either , which already set the tone for what I was about to have next. For my entrée, I had the Dijon salmon (not pictured), and it was honestly so bad. It had a very strong, fishy taste, and I couldn't get through it, I left most of it on the plate. I'm not one to complain, and since I was there with my kids, I just paid the bill and left. The space itself is pretty, but the food is no bueno. Also I found the menu was limited, it wasn't clear what their specialty is, and nothing really stood out or made me want to try something else. Overall, not a place I'd return to nor recommend.
