My family and I had dinner here tonight (Wed. evening) and we enjoyed it. It wasn't too busy and the service was alright, nothing to write home about. I had a Mai Tai (3/5, it was boozy but not bad) and my mom had a Blue Hawaiian (5/5, sooo good). For food, I ordered the Birria Tacos (4/5, yummy but could've used a little more flavor), my mom had the Mercado Tacos (4/5), and others had the Cantina Steak (3/5) and the Street Burrito (4/5). Food was great, we ordered the guac dip and app sampler (which included nachos, wings, mini chimichanga, and cheese quesadillas) to start. For entree I ordered the southwestern quesadilla which contained bbq shredded chicken, beans, corn, and cheese. The good: I want to start with, our server was really nice and belongs elsewhere, in a more authentic place. The food: Street corn- ATROCIOUS! In fact as it was delivered to the table every single one of the kids thought someone puked. I attempted to bite into it but I got sick instantly from the smell and taste. We have had this elsewhere in several other places, so I'm aware of what was ordered. It was bad. Like terrible. My boyfriend had to remove it from the table. Ground beef tacos- we got a few orders of this for the kids. Basic. They were over filled with lettuce and cheese and under that was a soup concoction of terribly ground beef. Not one taco was able to be picked up. They all fell apart. Shrimp fajita quesadilla- decent flavor, so greasy. I could only eat one side of the tortilla as the other side was swimming in grease. The portion size was good. Presentation of the plate was nice. I think if it wasn't so greasy it would have been a hit. Grilled chicken quesadilla- no complaints, compared to Margaritas restaurant however, which is rated below Taco Bell in his eyes. Kids chicken quesadilla- huge portion, looks decent. I would have preferred this meal over anything at the table. I wanted to like this place, as the reviews looked decent. However, there is zero chance of even considering going here again. It was bad! Server was very nice, checked on me a couple times and brought things to me quickly. However, the food itself was very bland and not warm. It also wasn't made fresh, including the guac. The guac tasted like it was one of those packets you get from a grocery store. Quesadilla was soggy and bland. Chicken was crispy and cold including the sauce. It's strange because I don't know what to make of that. The server brought me the food fairly quickly (within 12 minutes) so I don't understand how the food was cold. Perhaps frozen and not microwaved long enough? Idk. I asked for a to-go box for the chicken just so I could take it home and heat it up myself. Oh my God, I had gotten out of work and I was exhausted, and hungry, and needed to decompress before going home. I stopped for lunch. I had gotten out at 11am (been on since 7pm the night before). Feeling aimless I had taken a roundabout way home to see what options I had. I have wanted to stop here for a while, and good Lord they had outside dining set up! My wife doesn't like this style of food so today was as good a day as any to fly solo. I went in, but because of the 'rona they didn't have anyone at the entrance, most of the business is take out and contactless pickup. No inside dining. After gaining attention from an employee, I was brought to the patio area and sat down. The server was attentive and polite, and things came out fairly quick. I started to load up on chips and salsa, the chips were beautiful and crisp. I ordered a couple marg's and barbacoa chimichanga, I was in my happy place. Oh, and the server was nice and asked me what type of margarita I wanted, but no drink menu. My brain was so fried and broken I just said "I don't know much about tequila. Just a regular margarita please." I didn't want to think or process what I wanted. There's only so much decisions a person could make in a 19 hour period. The margarita was delicious and smooth and what I needed at the end of MY day. The barbacoa was juicy but a little tough, but otherwise the chimichanga was delicious. I think I was in and out in 40 minutes at most. This is a nice option to have, and I would like to try more of the menu. read more

My wife and I love this place! I was sold on the margarita pitchers first and foremost, but everything I've gotten there is absolutely delicious. Usually I get the pork and steak fajitas, but also all their burritos are incredible. My wife usually gets tacos and every one she's tried she has loved. They did wonderful work setting up and decorating. This was our second time here... came back, mostly because of the guacamole!!! So fresh!! A little too much Lime juice this time... still good. We went to Mexacali tonight based on a recommendation from my mother. I don't want to say the service is bad; our server was bad. The two other servers seemed friendly, helpful and genuinely interested in their guests. It was obvious, to us, that our waitress hates her job. It started with her asking what we would like for drinks. We asked her about drinks for our children. She matter-of-factly rattled off a list of drinks. She came back with the drinks and put them on the table with a loud thud. We then asked her if they had a kids menu. She said yes, sighed, and brought us the menu. We then ordered our food and she brought it to us. She never asked to refill our drinks or of if we wanted water. We ate our food which wasn't awful but was a bit bland. My wife didn't like her steak and left almost the whole plate. She asked if we wanted to take it home and we told her no. She never asked us if it was okay or why it wasn't eaten. I don't write reviews to get people fired but this woman should really evaluate her career choice. We will not be returning to Mexacali. read more

The ambience is great and the staff is very friendly. As for the food, the chips and salsa were great, you can tell they use fresh ingredients to make the salsa, very good! I ordered the "Tres Amigos" entre and was very disappointed by it. The steak portion of it was outstanding! Very well cooked with a lot of flavor, the chicken was very tender and soft and the shrimp was just okay. Unfortunately, the rice had no flavor at all, definitely did not taste like Spanish rice. Overall, the meal was just okay, but just left a bland aftertaste in my mluth. The plate was decently big, but the portions of rice and refried beans was a little small. Overall, I would say 4/5. Not good enough to get my 4 stars right now but there's potential. Would I recommend to a friend? Yes. Is it better than Casa Vallarte? That's questionable. First time in here and right off the bat they started getting *it* right. We were just going to the bar for a quick drink and an app and the hostess offered us a menu to take with us. Thus saving us from having to wait for the bartender to notice us and give us one. +1 for Mexicali! As we approached our seats at the bar, we got a "hi, how are you!" from a random waiter at the service station. +2 for Mexicali! We sat down and looked at the menu and chatted for a moment when the bartender came by and said "I'll be with you two in a moment". Thus acknowledging our presence although he was a little busy. +3 for Mexicali! As we perused the menu, I noticed something a restaurant goer rarely sees at places like this: prices next to every drink on their menu! +4 for Mexicali! Our drinks were perfectly balanced and the nachos were to die for, all exactly what were looking for on our Sunday afternoon break from the world. +5 for Mexicali! It was our first time at this resturant. My partner and I enjoyed the atmosphere and friendly waiter. The food on the other hand was a bit disappointing. I have tasted authentic Latin food and this was no comparison. I ordered the tamales and what was supposed to have green sauce on them was white which confused me. The rice and tamales tasted heated up and not fresh. I was also disappointed they didn't serve horchata, a very traditional Mexican drink (milk with spices, I highly recommend trying!). We also ordered the flan for dessert and was very confused. My partner said that flan doesn't have coffee in it (I don't like coffee) and a strange brown circle was underneath it. I tasted the coffee and didn't especially like it. Overall, service was very nice, decore bright and waiters polite and refreshing. We are so happy to FINALLY have a delicious Mexican restaurant in the area. Mexicali has been open for only a week and we've eaten here 4 times already. We relocated to this area from Southern California (and know what good Mexican food tastes like!) and have been on the hunt for a good, local Mexican restaurant and Mexicali is it! Both lunch and dinner service are amazing. Great for families. It seems like a family owner and operated restaurant, which adds to its authenticity. Be sure to save room for dessert.
