Metropolitan paving did what was contractually obligated but service and quality could have been much better. They showed up with their asphalt machine inoperable and then had to shift the install to premixed asphalt that hasn't held up well over the past three years. They then tried to upsell us on a promotional crack fix and seal which we committed to but they said would not be honored if the appointment had to be rescheduled due to weather, equipment breakdowns, supplier issues, etc. As a customer, we asked that they would honor a deal for matters outside of the customers' control but then they reneged. We found them to be a low quality company with poor sales and customer service. read more

We heard about Metropolitan though a neighbor who was getting a new driveway. Since our driveway was very much showing its age and in need of a complete redo, we reached out for an estimate. The estimate was well within our own estimation of what it should be, and there was a discount for having multiple homes on same culdesac getting work done. They did an excellent job, and did it exactly on the schedule they quoted. We were in a unique situation, where FFX County was resurfacing the culdesac. So they waited until the county was finished to ensure the driveway and road met seamlessly. 2 day job, able to drive on it after a couple of days. And it looks great. Unbelievably bad customer service! First of all, they showed a complete lack of respect for my property by leaving several large chunks of asphalt in my yard (see photos). I discovered this later and said this needs to be removed but they have refused to do anything. Second, the new asphalt cracked and crumbled within weeks! See photos. This was in the middle, not the edges, of a low usage driveway. The owner, Phillip Jones, said that I need to pay another $500 to have the driveway sealed so this doesn't continue. After I pointed out that defective asphalt (or how it was applied) should obviously be covered by the "24-month workmanship and materials warranty" listed on the website, he edited the warranty. Their warranty is obviously worthless. Finally, I paid an extra $1,000 for a 6"x6" drain to be installed at the bottom of the driveway. They installed a 4"x3" drain. That's not what I paid for but they refused to address this or offer a partial refund. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau months ago but they are completely backlogged and have not taken any action. Metropolitan Paving (Phil Jones) have offered nothing but obnoxious responses and insults. You have been warned. read more

Phil Jones and his crew came out to put in a new driveway. His crew was great. But when they finished, the middle of the driveway has two indentations in it. Phil said that he would come back and seal it and it would take care of it. It is now 9 months later and we haven't seen him despite our calling him and leaving messages 6 times. I had a 45 x 30 slab of asphalt installed in my backyard to be used as a basketball court. Phil Jones and his team did a great job. Didn't even make it to getting a quote. When requesting an estimate I explained that we are not living in our home under renovation so would need to meet them for the estimate. We waited at our given time for 30+ minutes but they were a total no show, no call. If you don't value potential customers' time, you clearly don't value our potential business. read more

We had significant drainage issues in our backyard and finally made the decision to address it. Part of the solution to our problem was to pull up our asphalt driveway and install drains underneath the driveway. We called Phil at Metropolitan Paving to be part of the project. He was extremely responsive, collaborated with the drainage guys to ensure that his team re-installed the driveway appropriately. He strategically installed our new asphalt driveway to tie in with the drainage work, to slope away from the house and added a berm as another way to help divert the water away from the house. We paid for our paving last year and the contract said there will be a follow up sealing this year. Phil did not respond to multiple emails and voice messages over the last four months. Our driveway is already starting to crack and the weeds are coming out. Phil, please respond. Update: Phil finally contacted me and agreed to do the follow up sealing in early September. Philippe was good at coming quickly and give a quote. I asked specifically if they could cover between driveway and garage, he said yes. But once the work started he told me it could be covered. They damaged my grass. Detached the hose and left on the other side of the house. As soon as he got the check which he asked to be made to his name, the attitude changed. Most people only write reviews when they're upset or had a bad experience, but in this case Phil at Metropolitan paving went above and beyond my expectations with getting me a solid new asphalt drive way that Im taking the time to write this review. So what happened was the first time the guys came, they removed my old drive way, re-graded then added the hot mix asphalt - it turned out that because the ground underneath was really wet, they had a hard time rolling the material and I was left with a somewhat 'lumpy' driveway. I expressed my concern with Phil and he came out to look at it the following week. I wasn't home when he looked at the driveway but he agreed it didn't look right and offered to come and remove the new driveway and try again - at no additional cost. So today they came and after removing the new driveway - he looked at the subgrade and decided it needed more gravel - they added 5 ton of large stone gravel and then added the asphalt and now the drive way looks great! All this is to say - Phil stood behind his word and made sure that I'd be happy with the driveway. I can't express how rare this is, more often than not - once the job is done, contractors try their best to shake their hands of the work and not come back - not only did Phil come back, he did so without and kind of push back - he offered to pull the driveway and he offered to add the gravel. We got a quote from Metropolitan Paving to do a sealcoating on our newly paved driveway that was installed a few years back. The price for this coating was more than double than the flyers we get in or mail from other sealing company's. I was very confused on why this product costs so much more then the typical coating me and my neighbors normally do. Phillip explained the difference between his sealant (Heated oil based) VS other companies (water based) sealants. After some research we decided to move forward with the more expensive oil based sealer and we are so glad we did the driveway looks brand new and this sealer is said to last twice as long but help the asphalt from cracking. It looks great and I'll post an update after a few years to see how long it really last but as for now it sure does look great! read more

I met Phillip Jones because he was doing work in my neighborhood. I asked him to come see my driveway and that of my neighbor. He did and proposed a price. We changed the scope, changed the pricing and Metropolitan showed up when they said they would, completed the job on time, did great work and cleaned up afterward. He is trustworthy and that is the reason I hired he and his company. It turned out to be a very good decision. New Review: This is John W again. I did write a five star review but I believed Phil when he said he would come back and fix a crack that his people put in the concrete in my garage. We exchanged messages but i was hoping he would just get back in touch with me and fix the issue. A crack in concrete is not the worst thing in the world but he said he would fix it. He has not gotten back with me and has not fixed the issue. I will gladly change this back to a five star if I see the issue resolved. More of an update. Guarded recommendation with caveat: I spoke with several area contractors to do driveway paving as part of a bigger raised parking area being done by a masonry specialist. It was a technical job with special fill and drainage considerations. Philip came to the site, spopke with me and the masonry guy. Phil impressed me by understanding his trade better than other candidatess I spoke to from a technical perspective. It was important to me that the masonry and paving experts agree on how to plan the project, and made me comfortable both were experts. This was very well accomplished with Phil. The price agreed was fair and competitive. The crew came on time and executed the job well, exactly as agreed. Afterward, I had a concern about one small area not being packed well enough. When I tested drainage, the water running over this area immediately soaked through into the earth below. The job being over. Philip was not as responsive as I would have expected. When he did returned my calls, he explained there is a limit to what you can do once the job is finished without it looking ugly. Maybe so. We agreed to try and address the problem when his brother the sealer came to seal the old part of the driveway. When the sealer came, the area of concern was well soaked with sealant and that solved the problem. Now water ran across the surface according to the drainage plan. A few days later, I noticed a large piece of asphalt-caked plywood was discarded onto my neighbor's property across the road. I can see leaving items behind, but this had to be deliberately thrown where I found it. Also, leftover asphalt was discarded in the drainage ditch on the same neighbor's side of the road. It's a rural unfinished road and calling VaDOT revealed it would and not a problem, but Phil did not return my calls or come clean up. I wound up raking 21-A from the road and leaves over it so it was not so glaringly visible. So the upshot is this: Metropolitan paving knows their trade well and does competent work, which is the critical thing to my reckoning. Bad work and technical blunders can turn into seriously expensive nightmares, and there are plenty of contractors out there with higher risk of that outcome than Metropolitan. But once the job is over, Metropolitan did not seem interested in follow-up, and the mess left was a disappointment. I recommend them and would do business with them again myself, but with a caveat to keep close eye on the job, right up to the last vehicle leaves, since I would not expect much support after they leave. read more

Updated review: As previously stated, the quality of the work was excellent. There was however important cost information that was not provided at the outset. I was told the cost to build up the driveway was $2,000. What I wasn't told was that, for any of the work to be warranted, I would have to shell out another $450 a few months later to have the asphalt sealed. I balked at such a high price for sealing a small single car driveway, and said I would shop for a better price. I was then told the warranty on the $2000 job would be void if I didn't use Metropolitan for the sealing. To get me to "yes", Metropolitan said they would immediately send me a $50 rebate check if I posted a review of them on Yelp or Google. I did post a Yelp review on 12/5/2021. I then followed up - both by phone and email - regarding the promised rebate. Metropolitan did not respond to my email, call me back, or send me the $50 they promised in exchange for a review. Buyer beware - be sure to ascertain the full final cost in writing before hiring Metropolitan. read more
