If you want to be charged twice the price you should pay for a key to be made, and if you want to have someone look you straight in the eye and lie to you that $20 for one simple key is a fair price... then visit Metropolitan Locksmith. -Keys.. Went there to have a key made, guy said it is a Medical Key(special apparently) and wanted to charge $15. Went to another hardware store they did for $10 -Home Door Lock.. Metro wanted $250 just to come look at it(applied to cost of repair if repair needed) and if had to fix could be as much as $1,200. Walked in to copy a key and walked out in less than 60 seconds! Exceptionally fast and courteous -- would recommend to anyone!

If I could give 0 stars I would. This place is ran by a con artist. The owner tried charging me $400 for opening my front door after using a dab of wd-40 and releasing the jam. He quoted me $210 the day before which I also find ridiculous. After I asked what the charge went up for, he told me it was because he attempted to fix the lock but that the lock is still not fixed. The invoice showed $125 for "fixing the lock". After I mentioned the invoice is wrong because it's not fixed (like he pointed out) he told the other guy to correct the invoice to say "temporary fix" which I pointed out he could not do. I told him I would pay the initial amount quoted and he said to pay whatever I want that he doesn't care anymore. So it's clear he can charge whatever he wants he just chooses to ruin peoples days. The guy writing the invoice told me I could pay without tax at the store or with tax at the home and so I walked back to the store where the owner again rudely told me I need to pay tax either way. To begin with, I didn't care about the tax I just wanted to be done dealing with this guy. If that doesn't convince you not to use their services I don't know what will. read more

Although it is a very small place but they seemed to have everything. It is a locksmith but they do have everything and even they had what I was looking for. Mostly dusted and old, except keys, but two workers in the store were willing to help me. I like local small shops. They give an attentive and customer first service. read more

Arrogant and rude locksmiths if you ask me. Yes, locksmiths are important to have around, but the men that work here (especially the older short man with the white hair - probably the owner or manager) are SUPER ARROGANT! Sometimes I house sit two buildings around the corner, so naturally I get a lot of copies of keys done with them because the location is convenient, BUT not once have any of these men that work here given me good customer service. I can't wait till I find another locksmith so I can never go in there again and see these macho men that are so NOT evolved in being able to take one step up on treating people nicely. read more

What's this? I'm the first to review? That's odd, as this place has been in the same location for aeons. Admittedly it's a bit out of the way, on a quiet part of Seventh Ave., but it always comes to mind when I need some keys made or some esoteric hardware that isn't worth a schlep up to Home Depot. This is a well-stocked hardware store that is, in addition, a competent locksmith that is capable of making pretty much any key imaginable. (An exception is skeleton keys; for that you have to go down to Greenwich Locksmiths at 56 Seventh Avenue So.) Anyway, locksmithery is not as easy as it looks, and these people do a very good job. They make Medeco keys, which requires sanction from the manufacturer. They've succeeded in making keys where others have failed. I'm thinking in particular of Blaustein Hardware, which repeatedly screwed up a key-making job for me. Metropolitan has anything you'd need by way of hardware/housewares, and then some. Service is very good, as befits a first-class hardware/locksmithing emporium. read more

Copying keys for a basic deadbolt lock cylinder should be automatic if you bill yourself a professional locksmith. Unfortunately for Metropolitan, the task proved to be a bridge too far. The first key they made didn't work. So I returned and they made another key - that one didn't work either. Third time a charm? Nope, just another useless piece of metal and a waste of a solid hour of walking back and forth to their shop. They returned my money once I gave up, but c'mon guys... you're supposed to be the experts here! I don't want to make three trips to a locksmith to no avail for the most basic of services. Lastly, the owner (I assume) is kind of a prickly little fellow. After the second redo, he was aggressively telling me that my lock was probably an exotic variety with keys that were impossible to duplicate. It's a standard Home Depot cylinder that I bought last month... so yep, that's probably it. read more
