Beautiful color and layering - exactly what I asked for!

I am SO glad I found this place! I moved to D.C. from NYC 2 years ago, where I had been going to the same stylist and a separate colorist for at least 15 years. I tried a few D.C. places that disappointed, then I found Metropolis! It has a wonderfully calm, quiet and relaxing atmosphere and a super friendly staff. Now I see Jaqueline for both cut AND color -and she is absolutely fantastic! From my very first appointment, she truly listened to my wishes and concerns (I have fairly thin and baby fine hair)--and she manages to deliver the perfect cut and color every single time! Beyond her talent, she is warm, kind, and a pleasure to spend time with. I also love the products the salon uses and sells - they feel very high-end and thoughtfully curated. I highly recommend Metropolis Salon!

Michael did a great job with my haircut! This is my second time going to him for a short haircut. I was very happy with the results both times. He really pays attention to detail and takes care to make sure you like the look! The whole experience in this salon is lovely. Christina washed my hair and it felt like a gentle massage. The hair washing station is so relaxing, and you are surrounded by pretty plants. Some rainbow light was shimmering in the sunlight, and it was just so pleasant. They also offer you water, coffee or tea. My haircut cost $145, which is not cheap, but I think it's worth it for such a self-care treat. I will be back again. I highly recommend!

Wow, what to say about this place. I rarely get anything fancier than a Pro-cuts/Sports Clip kind of hair cut. It's hard for me to justify spending so much money on a fancy salon where I feel like the place charging $30 bucks next to the Family Dollar can probably do just as well... I'm a changed woman. I wanted a drastic change and trusted my Yelpers and this five star rated salon. From the time I walked in to book an appointment to the time I left, I felt special and very well taken care of. I had Eli and she was AMAZING. I've read the reviews to this place and can probably guarantee that you won't really get a "bad" person when you book it. I was with Eli for 3.5 hours and she made me feel fabulous. I had the balayage and a hair cut afterwards and it was worth every penny. Ugh, I can't believed I could have looked this fly a long time ago.

Went here for just a haircut without shampoo and wash. I asked the hair salon upon calling if they would just do a dry haircut and they said "yes" and told me the stylist named Eli could do that. I turned down 3 other salons because they wanted to wash and cut my hair, when I specifically asked not to. When I got to the salon, Eli (who was very kind) was surprised about what I asked. She said maybe other stylists do it but she would have to wash my hair. Apparently she didn't get the memo about what I asked for. I caved in, after spending weeks looking for a salon and after driving an hour. I figured I'd go along with the wash now that I was there. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad....turns out, it wasn't to my liking. Eli is very professional and asked me several times along the way if everything was OK. She's very sweet so I didn't mind the cost and tipped generously just because of her bedside manner. The problem I have is with the salon itself, specifically the front attendant should never have said they would be able to do what I asked when they never told the stylist who'd be working on my hair about it. If you don't know for sure your stylists can do a type of haircut/style then maybe you should ask before I'm in the seat. I even sent pictures of my hair and asked if any stylist could do what I asked. They casually responded "yes Eli can do this" I'm attaching pictures of the cut. It is a nice haircut to the general public but for me (who it should matter to) it falls short since it doesn't look good when it's not blow-dried. My hair is different than most and I need it done exactly how I ask or it doesn't work well for me afterwards. I turned down other salons because I thought Metropolis would listen. Nope. Eli is a great stylist and very professional. She was very kind and gentle the whole time. It's clearly the salon's front desk fault for talking about something they didn't know or ask Eli about. If it weren't for her kindness, I would have given this salon 1 star.

TLDR: DO NOT LET ELI CUT YOUR CURLY HAIR! THE OWNER IS UNPROFESSIONAL WHEN THEY SCREW UP! LOOK AT THE PICTURES OF MY LOPSIDED HAIRCUT WITH UNEVEN BITS IN THE BACK! I went into Metropolis in person to ask whether they had anyone who knew how to cut curly hair like mine. I told them my hair was difficult because I'm allergic to styling products so my hair needs to be cut so it lays right on its own. The very nice woman at the front desk told me that Eli or the owner could do it and booked me an appointment with Eli the following week. I also asked whether it would be okay if I brought in my own shampoo and conditioner because I was allergic to most kinds and she said it totally was. I told Eli I wanted only a couple of inches off, conservatively long layers, and no hair above my shoulders. I also told her that putting in shorter layers doesn't work well for me because shorter layers don't curl well on me. My hair was kind of frizzy that day because the my shampoo and conditioner formulas had changed and they weren't working as well for my hair anymore. Eli talked me through the haircut, and I was optimistic, but as the haircut went on I got kind of worried. When she was done, my hair was a puffy, uneven mess. I had never left a salon with my hair looking anywhere near that bad. I pointed out that the very bottom of my hair was noticeably longer on my left side. She trimmed the bottom a bit on the left until she said she didn't want to cut any more off, and frankly it was making me a bit nervous, so I said okay. She said that she could wet and dry it again, and I told her that I didn't want to damage it by heat styling twice in one day. She said that if I let her rinse and dry my hair again, she could spruce up the cut and shape afterwards. I told her that if she was offering to style it again for my benefit, then no because I didn't want to heat damage it again, but if she wanted to style it for her benefit because she thought it would help her finish cutting it, then okay. After she rinsed my hair and left me under a machine that took *forever* and only dried the top of my hair, she didn't go over my hair to spruce up the cut like she said she would. When I asked her to trim the uneven pieces in the back, she fluffed them up into the rest of my hair and told me they were fine (they're not). I put my hair up in a bun for several days after that because I didn't want to deal with what Eli had done to my hair. When I washed and styled it as usual, I found that the bottom of my hair was still longer on my left, but the shortest layers were significantly shorter on my left than my right. Also, the way the very front layers were cut kind of interferes with my curl pattern. After a week, I called Metropolis to ask if I could stop in to speak with a manager because I thought it was best to show them the problems with the haircut, and I hoped someone would trim the weird uneven bit sticking out in the back because I couldn't reach it. After some back and forth about telling me I could come in that day and then telling me I couldn't, and the owner not calling me when he said he would, I called to check in and the owner got on the phone and acted very aggressive, telling me he had been there during my appointment like it was some sort of accusation, complaining that my haircut had taken over an hour and a half like it was my fault (when in reality I hadn't wanted to be there that long and was just doing what Eli had requested), telling me before I even had the opportunity to talk to him about the haircut that, well, *he* had some *feedback* for *me* (his emphasis), and that they don't revisit haircuts after 2-3 days, which no one ever told me when I got my hair cut even though Eli told me I could come back if it wasn't working. He also said he had overheard me talking about my conditioner and wouldn't be blamed for my hair being frizzy (which wasn't the problem, but he hadn't let me tell him about the problem). I asked for a text number or email address where I could send him pictures of what my hair looked like, and he told me I could go ahead and send them if I wanted but he never gave me info on where to send them. He also snapped at me that they don't give refunds and he wouldn't let me "push" what I was pushing, which I didn't understand because all I had asked for was to show them the haircut (because I didn't want them to tell someone else with hair like mine that Eli knew how to cut it) and for someone to cut the uneven bit sticking out in back which I had already asked Eli to cut when I was there the first time and couldn't reach myself. I hate to admit if, but after getting a bad haircut that will take months for the lopsided, short layer to grow out and having someone snapping at me and insinuating that I was a liar who was somehow trying to cheat him, I cried.

Highly recommend Eli for her exceptional skills with both cut and color. I've been seeing Eli for over a year and a half and my hair has never looked better. She takes time to listen and get your cut and color exactly right. The salon is very nice with a friendly staff and they seem to take every safety precaution to prevent the spread of Covid. read more

This salon is so warm and friendly.. I've been to a few salons in DC and FINALLY I FOUND THE ONE !!!! Micheal has done my hair and makes me feel so comfortable with scissors in his hands . I'm very particular with my hair. It's long , and he's very good with with it , regardless if it's a blowout or a cut . MICHEAL ROCKS ... I'm so glad I found them or they found me . I made a haircut appointment with Eli because I had read some great reviews on Yelp, and she was amazing. I'm growing out my bangs and she did a great job of listening to what I wanted and trimming some side bangs and making the rest of my hair look wavy and layered. I lived in DC for 4 years before finding a hairstylist that I liked. I stumbled into Metropolis and met Robin. She has been cutting, coloring, and treating my hair for 2 years now!! She is a great stylist and does an amazing job with all aspects of my hair care, but I will have to say that her skill with coloring is her strength. She picks the best colors that give me a great natural look. I've also had great success with Keratin treatments. Not only is she talented, but she is also a lovely individual and I genuinely look forward to chatting with her during my hair treatments! I've been going to my barber Johnny around December and he's been amazing. He just moved to this salon and I highly recommend him to anyone. He pays attentions to details and gives a great men's haircut. (I know he does color and ladies hair). I even through about letting him dye my hair! Michael is the absolute BEST hairstylist in DC! I have followed him to multiple salons in DC since first moving here in 2011. When I moved to Connecticut, I drove 5.5 hours down to DC to have him cut my hair because no one else did as good of a job as him! He produces great quality work and continually goes to NYC to continue training so he is always ahead of the curve on the latest trends and styles! I am thrilled that he has his new salon now! I asked Eli to even my hair out to one length / even it out while keeping it as long as possible and she cut my hair into a V. Short in the front and long in the back. The cut is very outdated and impossible to correct without cutting my hair short. I would not recommend this salon. read more

I followed my stylist Robin to Metropolis and I love the vibe of this place. It's very friendly and enjoyable. The staff makes you feel really welcome, like they're genuinely happy to see you. 1 hour before my cut and color appointment, the salon called me to ask if they could move my appointment 15-30 mins back. I'm a working mother and had already planned and juggled appointments and made the time to be away from work and for backup childcare but I figured I could make this work. I decided to accommodate them since it seemed like they were running behind and I didn't want to show up there and have to wait a long time anyway. When I showed up 30 minutes after my original appointment time hoping that I wouldn't have to wait too long before my appointment started, they actually told me that I was 15 mins late for my appointment and could only do either my cut or color! Apparently I had misread the reminder texts and not realized that my appointment had been moved back by only 15 mins. But were they understanding of my confusion and misunderstanding and accommodate that by agreeing to still provide the full service? No. read more

Shawanna Glass has been my stylist for 10+ years and I follow her wherever she goes! She is a talented stylist and colorist, especially for someone like me who is not so comfortable with changing my look. I came to Metropolis Salon because Shawnna Glass is now here. I would follow her anywhere! My hair is healthy, and I always get tons of compliments on my layers/cut, even when I'm WAY overdue. Shawnna really has the magic touch for cut AND color. Her balayage technique is the best. I love that she also knows how to work with curly hair and styles my hair so it looks great whether I rock my curls or not. Metropolis Salon is situated right In Adams Morgan, a great location. The service here is five stars -- wine, champagne, espresso or just water, the choice is yours. I also love how quaint, clean and comfortable the salon is; a truly relaxing atmosphere. I started seeing Robin over a year ago after I asked my coworker who cuts her hair (she has the most gorgeous hair) and she referred me to Robin! I kept going back to robin every few months because she gives me the most natural, gorgeous blonde highlights that a Jet-Black haired girl could hope for. I've tried it all with Robin from balyage to full highlights and she always gets the right color and fade and the highlights grow out beautifully. I wholeheartedly recommend Robin for men & women hair needs because it's obvious she has the skills. I love her for her wonderful personality and I'm so thankful to have found a place where I can go regularly and expect to come out looking perfect every single time. read more

I have been going to Shawanna Glass for my haircuts for nearly 4 years and came to Metropolis Salon when she moved here. She is a fantastic and talented stylist who always makes my hair look gorgeous and also offers a great brow/lip wax. I found her through a Yelp recommendation when I first moved to DC and have been with her ever since. If you are looking for a stylist in DC, definitely make an appointment with her and you won't be disappointed. Metropolis is a relaxed, non-pretentious salon where people are very helpful. They also let you make appointments online which is so convenient. read more

Michael has been cutting my hair for the last three years - the best three years of my hair's existence! From the very beginning Michael listened to every hope and desire and preference I expressed and somehow made sense of it all. I'm an architect but hair is terra incognito - I have no grasp of how it quite wants to be. The architect Louis Kahn said, "I asked the brick what it wanted to be and it answered, 'An arch.' " No such luck with hair, alas, until I walked into Michael's salon. He is a master of the cut, and he is one of the few professionals I've ever encountered who works like an architect: he understands the fundamental qualities of hair and his cuts, designs really, underscore how well he maximizes the underlying or inherent structure of hair. The result is a haircut that has all the flexibility one would desire, can be depended upon to look terrific until the next appointment, and has people actually commenting, "That's a great haircut!" After decades of mediocre haircuts at the hands of stylists and barbers alike, I cannot believe my good fortune in finding Michael. Michael's salon is an oasis of sanity and serenity. There is no pretense masking uncertain haircutting: under Michael's hands your hair will finally achieve its fullest capacity to be a great head of hair. Gentlemen: trust Michael. read more

Any salon would have easily provided a (normal) soft, feminine, sexy, natural cut that is subtle perhaps at different skill levels. This guy clearly had no concept of how to cut (straight) hair because his clueless messes get disguised easily in wavy or curly hair or in a blow dry with curling brush.

I appreciate the attempt to make this right although it still seems somewhat half-hearted. 4/27/18 Please look up "Zhen Lin" on yelp to see my review of the stylist who did my hair and more pics of the highlights she gave me. There was obviously a major misunderstanding. Why on earth anyone would want super blonde highlights on top of dark brown hair in 2018 is beyond me. This is not at all what I asked for. I asked for a natural looking balayage and showed Zhen literally four different pictures of examples I liked. I expressed that I really wanted the hair to look natural, blended and not ombre'd or striped. Both Zhen and the manager refused to try to make it right when I expressed my disappointment in my hair. Neither offering to help fix it, nor a refund. I had to pay $250 for something that was the opposite of what I wanted. After begging in person for them to help, I left another pleading phone message tonight for them to help me fix this mess, or refund my money as I can only imagine what a color correction will cost at another salon. I absolutely hate writing bad reviews about people and wouldn't have posted this if I didn't feel completely swindled, disrespected and brushed aside. I'm really hoping they'll get back to me, and I'll update this review if they decide to do the right thing. In the meantime, I'm beyond disappointed and disgusted!

If you're going to visit this salon make sure you consider Johnny for any color or cut service. Johnny is absolutely amazing! I was gradually going lighter with my hair and decided that I wanted to go full on blonde but was very nervous about damaging my hair and whether it would look right on me. A friend recommended Johnny, and from the beginning made me feel so comfortable and gave me such great service. He talked to me throughout the entire process and reassured me that I was making a great decision. My hair color and cut turned out incredible!! It was soft and silky and damage-free! I've been getting compliments about my blonde color ever since. In fact, I've gotten so many compliments about my color that I've been holding off getting it retouched by Johnny till I absolutely have to, lol. But I will be visiting Johnny very soon just because I loved his work and he goes above and beyond for his clients and is very passionate about what he does.
