This place is horrible. When I was a kid, my dad would drag me grocery shopping and I would bitch and complain about how it wasn't fair until he sat me in the trolley and gave me a block of cheese to eat. If I'd known about the Metro on Bloor then, I would have asked my dad to take me shopping all the time. Who doesn't want to sit in the cart and eat cheese?! That's awesome! This Metro is not awesome; it's sadsome. The aisles are more cramped than my shower, the staff randomly walk away from the register while ringing up your purchases (without so much as an 'excuse me' or 'I'll be back in a minute!') and the ice cream selection sucks. The only redeeming qualities are the cheap pizza on Wednesday nights and the fact that the lettuce (and produce in general here) is actually pretty decent. Oh, and when cracker barrel is on sale. Which is often. Thank god. After all that, I'm ashamed to admit that this is pretty much the only place I go to regularly enough (it's very close to where I live and I don't have a car so I don't have a choice) to even have a chance at becoming the Duchess of anything. Shopping in this Metro is like shopping at Zeller's -- the aisles are cramped, the offerings are generally disappointing, and the floor is kinda grubby. Still, I did find some pretty sweet deals (Lean Cuisines, 2 for $6, yeah!) and was surprised to see they carry Vitamuffins in the freezer case. I'd go back for the Vitamuffins, but other than that... I'd rather visit a larger market. read more

This Metro has student discounts every Tuesday and Wednesday, 10% off. And, like locusts, they descend upon this (very small) Metro and pick it clean. Lots of necessities tend to be out of stock (like milk and one time they were entirely out of onions - how does that even happen???) and unless you benefit from the discount yourself it would be best to wait until Friday or the weekend. It also has really tiny isles so you can barely pass someone, student discount days are really busy and it results in a crowded store, getting bumped around and an overall awful shopping experience. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU HAVE ANXIETY. I wouldn't recommend shopping here unless you live nearby and don't really have any better options - if I could shop somewhere else that didn't involve me taking TTC, I would. Only reason this isn't a one star is because it's open 24/7, and the cashiers and other employees are generally nice and helpful. read more

Metro is an awful chain to begin with but this one is especially bad. I literally couldn't even buy a thing for food there. Celery looked like crap, and even though they were on sale, the copious amounts of pesticides on the navel oranges made me itchy so I had to put them back in case I die eating them or something. The meat section even smelled like feces, which kind of worries me. I don't understand how a place like that can stay open! Too bad theres not a zero stars option. Or demerit stars, that would work here too. Aisles are so small, thank goodness we live in a city with a low obesity rate. Produce is DISGUSTING. They ask you to pay for rotting vegetables, but hey on the bright side, you're getting a lot of complementary mould with your packaged berries. I once told the staff of the mushy 'organic carrots' and if they could replace them with fresh ones. I was told they would get around to it next week- how will my guinea pigs ever understand? The one positive aspect is that the cashiers are all very nice. If they notice you have a bike helmet, they will equally weight bag your items so you wont fall into traffic from an unequal weight distribution of food on your handle bars. Security guard at night will always stalk young customers through the store which is uncomfortable and prejudice. If you need a sick day, by all means buy some food from Metro to grant yourself a good week off of work, otherwise theres a Sobeys west on Bloor, or just skip dinner read more

Every time I buy produce from here it is either already bad, or going bad quickly. I just simply cant buy thier produce anymore unless I need it desperately. Otherwise, things seem overpriced and it is cramped. But it's a single minute walk from my house, so when the lazyness kicks in, they still get lots of my business. *sigh* read more

I've been in this neighbourhood since this store was the Dirty Dominion, and when Metro took over, it morphed into the Smelly Metro. It is awful. The milk section always smells like manure. Why? The smell is overwhelming and enough to turn anyone off dairy for good. The produce is expensive and substandard. I've heard that they have trucks picking up produce down at the Food Terminal all the time, so what is the excuse? When there is a good sale, those items are almost always out of stock. Cereal, cookies, yogurt - forget about it. Yes you can get a rain check, but that just means you have to come back again. To be honest, I have managed to buy paper goods on sale, and that's why they get that one star. And management. Well, I think Metro's policy is "We'll train the brains right out of you". The stock clerks have to use carts that block the aisles. The cashiers mostly do the best they can with the long lineups, but why not have more staff on cash? There is a 24-hour SuperFresh across the street and an Urban Sobeys a couple of blocks away. Apparently that's not enough competition to spur this Smelly Metro to clean up its act. read more

I hate how small and cramped this metro is, I'm not a very claustrophobic person but I feel very panicky when I shop here during the daytime. Thankfully I found if I shop at night it's less insane, it being a 24 hour grocery store really makes up for it. But anyways I'm not here to complain about the terrible store design as I am to compliment the younger girl working in the bakery who took the time to help me find a key ingredient to a dish I wanted to make while the store was packed. Very poor selection, of products. Their warm food to go is expensive and horrible - the pasta I got was burnt brown and stuck to the bottom of the container. The lady who checked me out, Evelyn, is the most impatient, snappy grouch of a cashier I've ever seen, and shouldn't be working with people. I asked for assistance to fill my (own) bag with groceries I ended up with attitude and grief at this location. I contacted Metro Customer Service about the bagging situation but was ignored. Why doesn't Metro automatically bag your groceries when you BYOB? It slows up the line if customers have to both input their card password into the Interact machine then bag their own groceries. Most cashiers don't even smile. What a totally different world compared to grocers like Sobeys where cashiers have no problem with using (your personal bag) to bag your purchases -you are treated much nicer. I endeavor to shop whenever I can at the neighborhood Sobeys despite it being a junior sized store and avoid Metro despite it's much larger size. read more

This store is extremely crowded with bins of products so it's difficult to get around the store even when it's not busy. The produce and meat aren't always fresh and often the flyer items are out of stock. I've witnessed rude staff members stocking shelves and working behind the deli counter who carry on personal conversations among themselves while customers try to get their attention. I have noticed over the last few months that there are some staff members who are friendlier than in the past so that's an improvement. I only shop here if I absolutely need to (if I need to pick up milk or eggs, for example) but for my major shopping needs I go elsewhere. This is the closest store to my home but I would rather go further away for better products and a better shopping experience. read more

As someone who has worked for the chain this is a horrible location. The isles are only big enough for one cart to go down, so if you're trying to come up and another is trying to go down you need to either backup or play a game of chicken with another customer. The bakery staff is amazing while the front end staff would rather stand around than interact with you, not even conversationally but they don't even ask you if you need bags (a basic) never mind a simple 'hi'. Other than offering a convenient location, this Metro leaves much to be desired. They do have incredible Pizza Buns, but unfortunately they don't account for their popularity as they often sell out before you can grab one. Although there are many negatives associated with this location and Metro as a chain in general, I must mention that one of their Deli Clerks has the uncanny ability to weigh meat within five grams every time. Initially I thought this was simply happenstance. Yet upon future visits I found this to be happening with certain regularity. I even pretended to peruse other meats after receiving my order simply to see if I wasn't crazy. I wasn't. To those unfamiliar with the special skill set it takes to correctly weigh something within five grams consistently, I offer this. Simply that this is an innate ability that cannot be learned. Repetition will get you only so far, the rest is simply a gift. Try as I might as a young Candy Clerk back in the day weighing assorted gummies and jelly beans I could never get within 20 grams. This place mostly seems to mostly serve UofT students who live nearby and a few locals. It's a small store, narrow aisles, always feels pretty crowded. The prices are expensive - I only buy stuff here if it's on sale. The staff are all pretty nice and friendly. Like the other reviewers, I have a love-hate relationship with this Metro. It's soooo conveniently located, but it sucks in every other conceivable dimension. 1) It stinks. Everywhere. Even in the parking lot. 2) 75% of the dairy and produce is expired or close to it, or covered in mold. 3) It's so freaking crowded. God forbid you might want to use a shopping cart - it's all but impossible. 4) Anything on sale is gone within a few hours (likely related to #3, but seriously metro, figure out your supply and demand situation). Horribly overpriced and condescending. There are a few really great staff here: Rachel, Dave, Evelyn, Karina, Liz. But some of the others, especially the night cashier.....oy! The problem with Metro is that it has these pretensions and aspirations to being *the* top grocery store. That it fails is an obvious case of hubris. The prices here are outrageous, and I don't know how they can justify them, even for a second. They must own the building, so it can't be a rent issue. And even if it was, the prices are still crazy. What works in their favour is that there is no competition nearby. Bloor Supermarket? 7-11? Sobey's? The prices here are approximately double what they are at a No Frills or Food Basic. All three are owned by the same people. Yes the distribution hub chooses the best stuff to give to Metro but seriously is a little more freshness worth 2x the money? Celery at no frills is .77 at metro its like 2.99. Green peppers at No Frills .99 at metro 1.99/2.49 If you want the best and are willing to pay 2 or 3 times as much Metro is for you. How they justify this 2 or 3 times increase on non fresh canned and processed foods I don't know but they're always so busy I guess it is us consumers who are to blame read more

I'm going 3 stars on this place, but largely because I've become emotionally attached, not necessarily because it's 'a-ok.' It has what you need, and a lot of what you want. If you want extra, go to the Loblaws at Carlton and Church. I shop here often late at night, but the cashiers are almost always friendly to talk with, and the place has its own little scene going on. It's the kinda thing you miss when you move out of the neighborhood, though you never thought you would. Oh, and two cheers for bringing in the bags of already chopped kale. Only 2.99. Really, really, really crammed. Aim to go at 9:30 AM if at all; it looks like a big place from the outside, but the aisles are so tiny you end up pressing yourself against the shelves to let anyone else go by you. There are a few perks: they give out Air Miles, and there are occasional good finds here (the selection of soy-milk is impressive, the cereal is decent, they sell recycled Kleenex, their bread is sometimes pretty good, and there's this lovely Italian peach-juice available in the soft-drink aisle). But don't go unless it's looking quiet...or unless you're feeling very, very patient. read more

The customer service is appalling. Four deliveries, two of those charged for items not received, other times no substitutions for items as basic as potatoes and chicken. However this was the last straw. Again charged for items not received. This time we waited over 30 minutes on hold to be told sorry you did not get your milk and potatoes you were charged for we forgot to put it on the truck. We said we are seniors at high risk from Covid who live 5 minutes from store please delivery today or tomorrow when another truck goes out. Answer no against policy all we do is refund (if you manage to wait the long wait on hold to inform them) but we will not deliver even though our mistake. We pleaded saying we have no one to pick up these essential for us. No, you can order again (of course with minimum amount and another delivery charge) but we will not deliver even though our mistake. We asked to speak to a supervisor...still waiting! read more

Always shop at metro cause I like to shop late in the evening. Some cashiers here are really nice but there is one specific older Asian lady who repeatedly judges me every time I tell her I'm a student.... scrutinizing it like I would fake a student card for discount at their grocery store. Today I was out running so I didn't have my ID with me so I decided to show her my registration of classes online she didn't even look at it and said no we only accept ID. Like excuse me lady why would you deny me of the discount when my registration form clearly shows I'm enrolled for the current term. It's as good as an ID in most places even the TTC and then they wouldn't even accept it. Really it's only her I haven't really had any other issues with other cashiers discriminating me. I am an older student so maybe she's looking at my age and deciding for herself that I'm not a student. How Rude!!! Please re-train this staff member I'm sure you know who she is. read more

When this was a Dominion store it was pretty bad - the only thing it had going for it was the location. Now that it's a Metro it is about 100 times worse - I didn't think it was possible but it's true. The selection is limited and you will rarely find the same items twice since stuff sells out so quickly. The stock doesn't get rotated so be sure to check the 'best before' dates! The 'store brand' of products (called 'Selection') is truly dreadful. One good thing: many of the staff used to be there when it was Dominion and most of them are pleasant and they all seem to work really hard. The location is still convenient but there is a Sobeys a few blocks west that is half the size but twice as good; there is also the 24 hour grocery on the north side about one block west - despite some limitations it is much better than the Metro. read more

I often come here, since I live closest from there. Everytime I went there, the chinese staffs, and indian asians, and africans, and one old fat chubby blonde hair female staffs, always abuse me verbally, and yelled to me, without i do anything wrong, nor starting anything. They keep falsely accusing me as a prostitute, hooker, stealing others guys, etc. They also keep lying to their manager, a good kind old guy, that I am always screaming, fighting there, etc etc. I think they might have been setting these up, for some illegal illicit issues e.g. enterprise sabotaging, for example they try to get rid this poor old male manager, and they make scenario of abusing customers like me, looking like Indigenous people from dakota, etc, so later the manager might be got rid off, or they might be paid by the Metro's competitors, or else. The staffs majorly are terrible, and only one old thin female white, with white hair long ponytailed who is kind. But i saw unnoticeable bullying, everytime I went there, I saw this kind old very old thin lady had to cleanse all the shopping baskets, due to covid. The others all young majorly asians are VERY BAD!!! such attitude too. OMG. keep commenting others to get out from canada, while they are also newcomers, from asian continents. read more

I couldn't agree more with posters here that Metro has become a dismally bad place to buy food. What was once the proud Dominion store ("It's mainly because of the meat!"), is now a sad parody of the TV ads that claim they are fresh - which they aren't. And one location is worse than another. Let's start with stock-outs. Metro seems to be collapsing the SKU availability to the highest turnover items. Recently and numerous times, they've had: no Italian canned tomatoes in stock (only "Aylmers and Primo."); no pearl onions of any type (grocery dude didn't know what they were. Tried to tell me I really wanted shallots! Really??); no raw bran for baking - customer service girl tried to tell me I really wanted Post Bran Bud cereal (at $5.50 per box)! Really?? The stores are dirty, understaffed, the staff they do have lack rudimentary knowledge of food at the basic level and the apathetic attitude is palpable (try to make eye contact with one as they flit from one aimless task to another instead of pointing you to their latest stock-out item.) The odd one I do get in management who is honest kind of shrugs helplessly and pleads his stock situation is determined by head office decisions and much as he'd like to help, he's tried and he can't. My family of 5 loves good food and we eat healthy and well. We spend at least $700 per month on groceries. We've shifted 90% of our shopping to Lady York (Dufferin south of Lawrence) and Highland Farms. These independent grocers rock! Awesome selection, freshness that rivals the Royal Winter Fair competition produce and great prices. And Costco is amazing for meat on price and quality. Frankly, even No Frills offers a better price/value combo and some of them like Yonge & Steeles are very clean and cheery. Metro is pathetic and now relegated to "Flyer Sniping" for me.
