It is located right across the street from the light rail station (called strangely enough the TMC Transit Center stop). There is an app to get virtual tickets to ride the buses and trains. It costs $1.25 to be able to use for 2 hours, and $3.00 for unlimited use until 2 am the next day. Most people we noticed were scanning a card, but it seemed for visitors, the app was the best way to go (you need to show the activated screen to the bus driver as you enter). And there are no checks at the train stations. There are a lot of buses coming through here, many at very frequent intervals. The various bus stops didn't seem to have any pattern...we had to just keep walking around until we found the right bus number. Even then it wasn't clear always clear which direction the bus was supposed to go. But because the buses seemed to come around frequently, it would make sense to make sure the bus you were going on is the right direction. My nephew happens to live in an apartment building right next door, so very convenient for him (and he rides free as a student).

For $1.25, I'd say that it's fantastic. Trains seemed to run often enough to fit my needs, they were clean and they were speedy. Quiet (compared to the steel on wheels of Boston and New York) and modern (compared to London or Paris), the trains don't go all that far but they go far enough to allow a tourist like me to forsake a car rental and parking for getting around. Very simple system which operates on a proof-of-purchase system. You will need to keep your ticket handy as more than half of my rides had a fare inspector on board. You get to ride for a solid four hours for that buck and a quarter. Awesome!

Homeless people continue to use the train, spread out on the benches and hang out to take advantage of the air conditioned cars among the hot Houston summers. Over the past year or so I have noticed that there are more fare inspectors, outfitted in neon yellow shirts, however these hasn't proven to be effective in reducing the homeless presence. Over the years I have seen people smoking on the training, sleeping, and even masturbating....yikes.

And this service is like ride share app, where they will pick you at the door and drop you off at the door. If you have a wheeler or in wheeler, no problems, you will get you in the vehicle safely and secure you safely. You have to qualify for the service and you have to go through an interview at the main building in downtown. I really appreciation the Metro Lift as it let me be independent on going to places in Houston safely and not relying on family or friends all the time. There is a loud blaring speaker belting out a constant loop of "82 Westheimer, Please have your Q card as you enter the bus. Thank you for riding Metro" Then it goes in Spanish and repeats again. I know I'm on the fucking 82, you don't have to repeat it 30 million times. Between that, the rattling, windows and the loud mouth thugs sitting in back, the noise is unbearable. The schedules are always fucked up and sometimes you'll wait 30 minutes for a supposed 10 min interval bus followed by 3 or 4 busses minutes apart. For the most part this bus gets you were you need to go but if time allows take the 25 instead.

There's multiple departures everyday and it's easy to book a ticket through their website. Upgrades are available to select your seat or pay to have the whole row to yourself. Honestly I wouldn't waste your money on this. Both of my trips were only about half full so it was easy to spread out. Departures were both on time but both arrived a little past the expected arrival time so take that into consideration when trying to plan your day. The bus is clean, has charging outlets at very seat and there's a restroom on board. They are also able to accommodate wheelchairs as there is a lift at the back of the bus. My one complaint is the ride from Houston to Austin had a significant amount of vibrating for the entire ride. Think - that feeling when you first get a flat tire. It was pretty hard to try to nap. Otherwise, no complaints. I would do this again.

But, there's something still to be said about reaching for the stars, even if you are a station. Situated next to the huge Smith Lands parking lot (primarily for medical center visitors but used during the Rodeo, too), it faces a large apartment complex, which makes for convenient hops for those dwellers who also work in the medical center. The Texas Medical Center stops are either 2 or 3 stops on the northbound line from here. First one is TMC Dryden and second one is the Memorial Hermann Hospital/Zoo stop. If you're having a medical emergency, you could buy your $1.25 ticket, hop on, and stumble into the emergency room. Actually, for liability purposes, scratch that. Call 911 instead. Pro tip: If you have to pee while riding the rail, you can hop off at this stop, enter the Smith Lands parking lot gate, and follow the blue awning path to the shuttle bus stop. There are buildings on either side of the shuttle stop and both have clean air-conditioned bathrooms, complete with sinks, soap, and paper towels. You won't find a gem of knowledge like this in any Houston visitor center brochure. You're welcome.
