Vegan in Montreal: delicious Spanish food in Villeray with fantastic staff and service. I was in Montreal for a few days for work and made my way through quite a few places. One of the standouts was a celebratory dinner with friends at Meson. Their menu isn't usually vegan friendly at first glance.... HOWEVER. The friend I was eating with had been before and spoke to the staff about having a vegan option for me. They put together a delicious paella, and even went the extra mile to make sure that the vegetable sides we got would compliment the paella instead of repeating flavors. Overall this was a meal full of amazing service, wonderful food, and great atmosphere. This is a place I would recommend to everyone for a fun night out and/or a special occasion!

Cocas, a Catalan pizza version with mushroom and homemade sausage

It's a Spanish restaurant with a nice decoration and few items on the menu, which facilitates the picking. I went there with my family. The waiters were helpful and polite. We had as Entrantes (starters) the Croquetas de jamón; Serrano and béchamel croquettes, a Cocas, which is a Catalan pizza version with mushroom and homemade sausage, and a Pulpo a la gallega; Octopus, smoked paprika and potatoes. They were both delicious!!! As for the main courses I was personally deceived, as I didn't taste the Spanish flavors I was expecting. We ordered a Zarzuela, which is a seafood casserole with cod, shrimp, mussels and potatoe bouillabaisse, and a Paella a la Mesón; Bomba rice with chicken, shrimp, clams, mussels, chorizo, tomatoes and green peas. Finally, if you wanna eat Spanish for a change, you can go there and pick the starters.

I came here with a friend for bites and drinks. We ordered 4 appretizers and a bottle of wine, which was a perfect amount of everything. We got the Gravlax de trucha, Ceviche de dorada, Calamares con salsa brava, and chicken meatballs (not on the menu anymore). I would recommend the Ceviche de dorada and Calamares con salsa brava. The decor was nice and gave out a relaxed atmosphere. Our waiter was very attentive and polite. Although it was pricey, I would come back to try other dishes.

Feeling like eating Spanish food (Paella or zarzuela), Meson is the place to go. I've been there twice for diner. The menu is straight forward. You do not have many options. This allows the restaurant to focus on few dishes that end up very good. I ordered the Paella. It is well-stocked with chicken, shrimp, clams, mussels, chorizo, tomatoes and green peas. I also tasted the Zarzuela. The cod, shrimp, mussels and potato bouillabaisse where marinated in a delicious spicy sauce. The restaurant is cosy. They have a nice bar. I posted a pic of it. What I also like is the industrial design luminaire. We also need to mention that the service is impeccable. They were able to handle a table of eight people on a Friday night with no delays in serving the food. Lets not forget the waiters that are very professional and helpful. Overall Meson is a good place to dine on a weekend with friends or if you're on a date. I only have one comment to make. Even though they have a big wine cellar, they also need to focus on beer. They only serve 1/2 Pint glasses. They need to go for the pint.

Was here with a small group on a busy Thursday evening. Unfortunately the service was very slow. Waited about an hour before receiving our appetizers and another hour before getting our main dishes. I ate the Bacalao al horno which was a bit pricey but very good. Most of my group gave the food a 6/10

I Know the brunch menu looks fairly simple and the decor from outside looks fairly "bobo chic" like most of the restaurants/cafes here. However, this place is different because it does just a little bit better on all criteria: food was excellent, both presentation+taste+price range; the decoration gives more than just a hipster vibe- it's good quality stuff, especially the cellar. And the service is fast & friendly. Would love to come back for dinner.

Went with a group of 6 and two kids for dinner. Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, amazing service! They waiter took care of the food for us and they did a fantastic job! For starters we had Croquetas de jamón, calamari, cravlax de trucha which was to die for...,octopus so tender and nice, shrimp cocas. We had the paella and flank steak which was very juicy for main which we shared. loved the starters but my personal favourite was the marinated trout with the caviar! They also had great wine to chose from. I would def go to this place again!

The portions are small and every single item we tried was saturated in grease. Very overpriced fire what you get. I am not impressed

Pics and reviews looked great, so we made plans to dine here during our penultimate night in the city. Barroco is located in Old Montreal, right on Rue Saint-Paul. The exterior has really charming curb appeal, and upon entry we were greeted by the same. This isn't a large restaurant, arranged with tables and a few booths throughout the space and a bar on the back wall that serves as a focal point. The vibes were on - the restaurant was tastefully decorated with a mix of old-fashioned fixtures, stone walls, and earth tones. The restaurant was quite lively - the vibes were on. Their drink menu is quite creative; we actually started our evening at the bar while we were waiting for our table and the bartender made some great suggestions - both cocktails I had were really good. The food menu is mostly French inspired; it wasn't extensive but they had a good variety of creative dishes. We decided on two starters - the brioche and the octopus salad. The brioche was fine, it came as one roll with a side of seasoned butter. It was a little on the dry side, and the butter wasn't very flavorful. The octopus salad was much better; the octopus was sliced and arranged on top of a ratatouille which provided a good complement of flavors and textures. For my main I got the OG braised beef. The beef was almost pot-roast style, seasoned with maple and aged balsamic sauce and paired with truffled celery root purée. This was delicious - the beef was super tender, and the sauce provided great flavor. The puree was an awesome side - the entire trip was super comforting and familiar while also being new and interesting. We decided to get two desserts - the madeleines and the olive oil cake. The former were baked fresh and came with a side of chocolate pudding and salted caramel, while the latter came with whipped cream and coached pears. Both were good, but I preferred the madeleines; the warm sponge paired with the chocolate and caramel was a great finisher to the meal. Service was great - everyone from the host to the bartender to our waiter made us feel welcome; they definitely elevated the experience. Overall, I had a great time at Barroco; the food, vibes, and service were all on point. I would definitely consider returning the next time I'm in Montreal.

I love Club Espagnol for a variety of reasons, the sangria is one, the live flamenco shows are another, the gentle family atmosphere, the great terrasse out back and lively crowd all make this place work. Oh yes, then there is the food. Tapas of all sorts: shrimp, calamari, octopus, chorizo sausage, all of it served in garlicky, bread-moppable glory. Spanish ham, cheeses, salads, garlic potatoes and mushrooms, soups, and salads. Mains here include rabbit and many variations of paella. While walking by some tables, the paella plates were positively delicious looking, all the saffron-colored rice, huge shrimp, mussels and chunks of sausage and ham all in full view. Prices are also very reasonable. I love the way families are usually here as well as younger couples, and groups of friends, all sharing the same space. I was here last week with a friend for dinner and some small girls were playing behind us when one of their balloons deflated and flew around before landing right in the middle of our table (not on any food) we both burst out laughing and so did the girls, it's the kind of place where stuff like that happens and it's fine. Try to come here at least once in the summer, it's totally worth it.

The paella is really nice. Since maybe 2-3 years ago you have to pay a 25$ member fee to buy booze cause they are a social club. Recently Jeremiah Bullied took over as owner chef and I was excited to go see what this travelling, pickling, kindly master of deliciousness was doing with the old Spanish social club. We went last night to check it out and though the changes being made so far are subtle they are a great indication of new life and exceptional cooking happening in the lovely old room looking out over St Laurent. The classics are all still there, just better: the bread is all homemade and is so freaking good. The goat cheese balls are still changing people's lives, the rapini now comes with kale and preserved lemons and is way better than before, and the chorizo is juicier and tastier than it has been in years. We tried the specials, a pumpkin soup with caramelized onions and toasted seeds and it was unlike anything I've eaten before and I want to eat it every day until May. The other special was Southern-friend quail in lemon gravy on pickled brussels sprouts. Everything about this dish was amazing, except I'm not a quail fan, I think it's stupid, but that's just me. The team here is making tiny changes to the room and the menu and I look forward to going back often to seeing how it all progresses. The fresh coat of white paint feels clean and amazing, and the other little tasteful updates to the decor are smart and good looking. Well worth a revisit, go get it!!
