Stumbled upon this hidden gem in Mission Hills and it was such a great find! We ordered their signature café drink iced with breve and an iced bad boy latte, and both were delicious. Super cute shop located right next to lefty Chicago pizza in Hillcrest. It's a shack but was popping when I came on a Sunday mid morning. Parking is tough but there is a lot right behind it where you can pay during the week (not sure about weekends) and if you're lucky you can find street parking. You can't miss this spot because it's super colorful. There are a few chairs and benches out but good enough for 10ish people. The service is quick and super friendly which is impressive because it's a one person show. They are taking orders as the espresso brew, answering questions, putting foam on coffees, wiping up messes all at the same time. We ordered the Denise Coconut Latte which had espresso and coconut syrup. It was iced. I'd give that a three star. We also ordered La Lupe which id give five stars. It had espresso, Mexican chocolate, steamed milk and peanut butter syrup. I had it iced and it was delightful to simply put. It was like being hugged even tho it was iced. I know there are a ton of options on the menu but honestly, this was so good I might only get this when I return. FAVORITE coffee shop in San Diego hands down. I have tried several other places and found myself coming back to this one. My favorite part about the shop is that the drinks are consistently made well even with different baristas. The selection of drinks is wonderful and I love the variety. I had Meshuggah Shack bookmarked for a while and it turned out that it was on the same street as Lefty's pizza which my husband wanted to try on a recent trip to San Diego, so it was a win-win. It's literally a shack-like structure with a few tables and chairs outside. I ordered a blended Aloha drink, which was really good and my son and I just sat at one of the tables outside, while he played with a Magic 8 ball they had on one of the shelves. The drink was really good, the woman making them was nice and quick, and overall a great experience. Will definitely keep this on my list of coffee places to try. It's in the Hillcrest area. They have a small lot, but I'm sure that fills up fast, so you probably have to find street parking. We got pretty lucky as it was a Sunday afternoon. read more

Went to get my nails done across the street and my husband got coffee here while waiting for me. He said it was good so I decided to get myself coffee afterwards. I got a medium Mexican Mocha, the cup was smaller than most medium drinks but I didn't mind that. The lady manning the place made a face when I turned away when the tip came up on the screen, then proceeded to ignore us when I picked up the drink. (Still gave a tip though.) Love the menu with very creative descriptions for each coffee lol It is also LGBTQ friendly. I ordered the "crackhead chai latte". So glad a local recommended this "neighborhood secret." It would be easy to dismiss this wooden shed off the main street (Washington), but fortunately, there's always business. I care because I go out of my way to get my second cappuccino of the day there. There's a documentary, "The Perfect Cappuccino," that searches across the states for excellence--and I found it in San Diego. The owner is 100% Italian and knows espresso, and I saw their delivery truck come with Italian beans. The foam was perfect, served in an Italian ceramic mug. Three different baristas have been equally friendly and expert. Plus, there are plenty of tables and chairs on the corner patio, and a spot nestled under a tree (all with WiFi!). Every time I go to the shack, there's somebody interesting there making my coffee. The lively conversation and pleasant demeanor is worth the trip. The menu for coffee is pretty extensive on it's own, but they do create custom drinks. My drink today was an iced matcha with two shots of espresso. No sugar necessary, and the right amount of buzz. Drinks are soooo good, attitude of baristas has been less great. I have been a customer throughout the years from the early days of opening the kiosk. When Jon/owner was there serving drinks, he set the tone for fantastic customer interaction and service. Made sense since it was his business and he enjoyed visiting with his patrons. Just like a great coffee, this place is a kick in the pants! While tooling around town on a weekend trip to San Diego, we happened to walk past the Shack and a coffee sounded like just the thing. Lo and behold, the drink names are epic, the decor is spectacular, and the employee helping us was so nice. I was needing some extra octane after a heavy night so I got a drink that had a name I was slightly embarrassed to say out loud because it was so silly, the contents of which were a coffee with a shot of espresso. New to the area I pass the shack all the time and finally I was able to make it over and this little shack is mighty. Don't let the size matter because the drinks are phenomenal and not at all your typical caffeine drink. You can also get a pastry or gift on the go. The regulars have memorized the menu and I felt like I was reading in awe of the unique drinks. Their names are sassy and memorable just as the decor inside and out of the shack. I am hooked and can't wait to come back! I couldn't decide on which drink to try and ended up with the Crackhead chai latte at $5.50 for the small drink calling out the crackwhore to your face instead of mumbling it behind your back! Lol I didn't make that up it's on the menu! This was absolutely phenomenal everything I didn't know I wanted and more. Don't worry this little shack has a few choices for non caffeinated fein and is open from 7am -5pm! Located on the corner of a parking lot in the heart of mission hills restaurant central. With limited seating it is more of a to go coffee shop then a hang out spot. They do offer a few tables if you don't want to sit and enjoy your drink.
