A dapper dressed spot with rich and crafty Ramen bowls makes Meshikou a must visit eat in the northwest neighborhood. An intimate place with an almost hibachi slab of bar sleek for date night. Dark interior with fake barn wood art and caged dropped pendant lights over seat-four rustic tables sets of which they have about four short and three tall meets you on entry. An additive of blood red string bulb, some egg white, a spatter of dark light, and Japanese like script makes the decor seem as a projection the of colors and placement of the Ramen bowls themselves.
A menu of bowls, apps, rice, and add-ons seems specifically created with an experience in mind. Authenticity it seems is the point though I lack required experience to comment on it, the menu does bring novel combinations of flavors and textures that connects oriental feels with western comfort food culture.
The appetizer menu features the soybean themed Shio Edmame to eccentric Crab Taco to Salt and Pepper Calamari. A Barbecue braised pork belly with house glaze and steamed bun was a tempting try but I settled for the zesty Salt and Pepper Chicken Wing ($7). This dish served in a healthy sized group of six is tossed with pepper, onion, jalapeno, and my weakness garlic. The salt and pepper seasoning is house made. I love these wings. The heat level in my chart is a little above medium. They come in such quantity I brought half home and they were as good freg cold in the morning as they were hot out of cooker with their eastern flavor and meaty filling.
My soup was Shito Paitan Ramen. (A deal at $11) Straight and savory noodles share the rich Paitan, shio broth with green scallions, the non-shroom tasting but textural nice kikurage mushrooms, fish cakes, soft boiled eggs, and amazing braized pork belly. ( you can also choose tenderloin) Like all nine of their Ramen soups, spanning several broths and meats and one vegan concoction, the Shito Paitan is a visual artwork itself with the ingredients seemingly placed in the broth for maximum aesthetic. The flavors, taste, and textures is as high as the look bringing several different sensations that still connect each other in a unity. Delicious.
Service is nice and they know the menu, they can answer your question and guide the uninitiated through the various concoctions. One slight neg, unavoidable in ordering these top notch makings, is that your order will take time. This is not a go-in get-out place, it is a place to spend time. Apps will come when they are ready, a sign of a joint with prime dinning experience in mind; for good food--the when you eat it--is as important as the prep. So don't get ansy if your dinner guest get their taco before you get your wings.
Considering all, this is a perfect start for date night. It's intimacy, romanic colors, and good food makes a value for the price. Though it is not to heavy for a freindly gathering either or a solo jaunt to try new food. read more
