Merryhill Elementary on Calvine has been an incredible experience for our family. From the very first day, we could see how much the teachers and staff genuinely care about each child's growth.. not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well. My child has thrived here. The progress we've seen is remarkable: confidence, curiosity, and a true love for learning have all blossomed. The teachers don't just "teach to the test"; they create an environment where children are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and celebrate their unique strengths. What makes Merryhill stand out is the balance they strike between structure and creativity. The curriculum is challenging yet engaging, and the small class sizes allow for personalized attention. Absolutely LOVE this campus and teachers! Everyone has been so wonderful and supportive. The staff knows each kid by name and the parents for each kid. Ms Cooksey has taken care of our child's education but also their emotional needs too. Mrs. Baker is an exceptional and excellent teacher. Her compassion shows through her creativity with the students. Creativity meaning she devotes a lot of time into developing each student on an individualized basis-she takes the time to understand each student and meets their needs accordingly. We love all the teachers and staff at this school. For my current son, he is under such amazing care with Ms. Cooksey we are so grateful for her. He enjoyed roller blading with Ms. Raymundo she is a great teacher too. He likes art class with Ms. Anderson she is amazing with all things art. Coach Hudnall helps the kids learn about PE and he is great plus super fun. Ms. Ramirez is best at teaching Spanish we love learning from her lessons. Mr. Iyaka is doing good teaching computer basics we love to learn from him. Ms. Portalanza is a music genius and we are so lucky to have her teach piano and all things music. Shout out to Mr. Blackburn for helping with piano lab it's been a fun and focused time. My granddaughter is in Kindergarten here and I am so impressed with the staff and school. They are very organized and the staff keeps you well informed. There are 16 students in the class and the benefit of learning is top notch. I was a Paraeducator at a public school (36 students per class) and it was a struggle for some of my students to focus and learn. I'm very happy with my granddaughter's learning experience here. Excellent Elementary School. I read some of the negative comments that rated the school poorly and I have not witnessed any of that at the elementary school. It is a great community and excellent teachers. We transferred from another private school and are very happy there. The staff are very dedicated to the children. Why I like it: 1) smaller class ratios than public school 2) great staff and community. It feels like a family. 3) great character teaching 4) great after school program that includes clubs and sports there at the campus - music lessons, sports, art, etc. 5) they have two bus stops in Elk Grove. The bus will take your kids to and from school. Such a bonus for working parents. 6) I know my kids are well cared for and safe. 7) they offer camps during the breaks, which is a life saver for working parents. read more

I'm only giving this school one star because I don't have the option of giving it ZERO stars. If this school weren't privately owned, it would have surely been shut down by even the worst school district in the country. If you care about your kids, please, please, please don't send them here. Here are just a few reasons: 1. Very few credentialed teachers; 2. Kids are supervised on the playground before and after school by 16 and 17-year-old kids (they're not even adults themselves); 3. The school is a FOR PROFIT company... they are required to make a 30% profit on all field trips and activities (they're owned by Nobel in Pennsylvania)... that means that they're only looking out for their bottom line and not for the best interests of your child. Before our son was born, we did a very substantial amount of research on child care options in our area (Elk Grove). We decided to sign up for Merryhill before our son was born mainly because of the very positive feedback received from everyone every time we said the word "Merryhill." Initially, things went well. Aside from our son coming home with the wrong clothes on from time to time, all was well. After about 2 months, I started to notice that the "teachers" that were in charge of caring for the infants seemed to be in constant rotation. The staff at Merryhill make it very, very clear that parents label ALL of the belongings used by their child. Labeling ensures that your child doesn't come home with the wrong clothes on, isn't given the wrong bottle or pacifier etc. One Friday, I picked up my son and noticed that he was wearing an outfit that I knew was not his. After inspecting the label, the proper markings had been made. Also, my son was only around 3 months old at the time. The child that the outfit belonged to was almost 1 year old. I pointed out the error and got a response that I was very uncomfortable with. "Sorry. Sometimes the teachers cover for each other during breaks and the newer ones don't know the kids as well." The following Monday when I picked up my son, he was in a swing with a pacifier in his mouth that I didn't recognize. After reading the label, I discovered that the pacifier belonged to another baby. After a meeting with the Dean, she was somewhat flippant about the mix up. She apologized and followed up by saying that mistakes happen and while they try to prevent them, she couldn't guarantee that other, similar mistakes wouldn't happen in the future. We pulled our son out and never went back after the meeting. Not at all worth $1000 a month IMHO. read more

My child started at Merryhill when she was 2.5 years old. The Calvine campus is the third campus that my daughter has attended. She is in first grade now. We are big fans of Merryhill. The best illustration of what Merryhill does for kids can be seen in their readiness for kindergarten. My kid, and her peers that had attended a year of Merryhill pre-school, was already at or above grade level in all academic areas. In fact, she had already mastered most of the California standards for kindergartners. Thanks to Merryhill pre-school my daughter was ready for first grade before she started kindergarten. The leaps that she and the rest of the class made during her kindergarten year were amazing. She can read over 70 wpm with high comprehension, add, subtract, and has a great base in science and social studies. Merryhill also offers after school enrichment activities that have been great for our kid. (dance,choir, karate) If you can afford Merryhill, I would recommend it. The staff is qualified and enjoys smaller classes (15 kids avg) and much fewer discipline issues than public schools in the area. read more

Kids at Merryhill seem to be sick about 75% of the time. You always see kids with snot running down their faces. The staff is pretty good but the place is just depressing. The kids look like zombies. I would never ever let another one of my kids attend there. I got tired of all the "fundraisers" too. They got enough of my money with the pricey tuition!!! read more

We have one daughter in 6th grade (7 years at MSC) and one daughter in 2nd grade (4 years at MSC) and have nothing but praise for the academic excellence, caring teachers and staff, and overall learning experience at Merryhill Calvine. Both of our daughters have excelled in the challenging academic environment, out-scoring all of their non-Merryhill friends in standardized testing scores. We appreciate the personal attention and care and concern of the principal, every teacher and every staff member. Extra-curricular education is also impressive - sports, music, technology, art, language, critical thinking and other 21st Century skill development and enhancement. My child has attended Merryhill Calvine since Kindergarten and we have been very pleased with our experience. I have had other children in a variety of public schools, but none have satisfied my childrens' needs and have been as inviting as Merryhill. The staff is very friendly and the teacher to student ration enables the teachers to spend their time really connecting with the students. My child has been very happy at Merryhill Calvine. The teachers couldn't be any more understanding or gifted and the many programs offered only continue to enhance the campus. Merryhill Calvine has provided my child with more than just the fundamentals of an elementary education: my child has been and is continuing to be shaped by Merryhill's standards of responsibility, integrity, respect, and desire to learn. read more

My daughter started here Fall 2009, when Mr Wayne joined as our new Principal. For the past two years, she has been challenged, has learned amazing things, grown in immeasurable ways, and has found her voice in choir and painting club, after being a pretty shy toddler. We have enjoyed every minute, and can't wait to share the environment with her little sister next Fall as she begins her Kindergarten adventures. The teachers truly care, and the Principal approaches his role with integrity, creativity and care. He greets every student and parent in the Lobby by name, and goes out of his way to enhance their experience. The school's use of technology is ahead of the curve, and my 2nd grader uses it today in ways that I didn't experience until College. My son will be starting Merryhill and I can't wait. My friend's son attended this school from 18 months to until he was in the 2nd grade. The only reason why he did not finish is because her selfish ex-husband would no longer assist in paying the tuition. At any rate she loved this school and he received to notch education. Today he is attending Christian Brothers with an 3.5 GPA. The educational foundation he received at Merryhill was priceless. That is why my son will be attending Merryhill. read more

my brother in laws sister works at merryhill schools and also has her kids enrolled into merryhill she invited my family to go to her children's graduation i watched both of them graduate and i can honestly say the teachers the principal and the whole staff are great they take time to get to individually meet the specific needs of the children in there class rooms they actually take time out to get to meet with the parents and review the child's individual progress on a much more satisfactory level then a public school teacher would the teachers and the staff are all great in my opinion and they make it fun for the children to learn in a less stressful environment they have smaller classes which means more one on one time with each student instead of having a large class with a teacher who just hands out the asignments and says get it done and goes back to there desk to read a book and collect a paycheck instead of actually earning one as such as these teachers and staff members at merryhill school do if you have a shy child whos not particular in interacting bring them here they will be very talkative and very outgoing in no time and they will get individual attention and excel in there academics read more

There was an incident with a student whose mother worked at the school and was constantly in trouble and it was not until the student sexually harassed a younger person that he is no longer there. I am concerned there have been previous bad behavior (from talking to my student and other parents) that has been overlooked because of the employment relationship. The phased used was - this child has been in trouble "a lot". So how did we get to this point? Is there a rule against a student's foul language? Within 72 hours of the incident, both the employee and student have left but what do we have in place to ensure this doesn't happen again? All students and parents need to be briefed as to the incident and there needs to be a mandatory anti-bullying, sexual harassment and sexual education for the upper grades (parent approved). I'm not paying thousands a year for a school where my child is around someone who cusses and then come to find out made a very serious gesture - call it whatever you want - to a child four grades younger. Just because you send your kids to a private school does not mean they are insulated from some pretty serious stuff; the students need a venue to talk about what happened - because they are already talking. The younger kids who turned the incident in should be applauded as students in the upper grades were fearful of turning him because of his foul language; which makes me think they didn't want the language turned on them. This is a safety issue. There is a real opportunity here to create a school climate where this never happens again. read more
