Many of the items here have a coastal influence, so if you are looking for hand painted sand dollars, jewelry with sea motifs, artwork with seascapes, or comfortable clothing for the beach, this is the place to go. I noticed so many new treasures too, for our home and each find felt more special than the precious find. A seaside theme store filled with unique decor and cozy clothing finds: a treasure trove, especially if you're shopping for your home or gifts. They're near several unique gift shops and eateries inside the Carlsbad Village Ctr. Near the Sundiego Board Shop as well (visible from the street's "Carlsbad" sign. Just learned it's one of two locations. So many cool shops and places to explore. Around the corner is a Starbucks, in case that's a daily staple and it brings you to this area. read more

This fun business is a double header. Located in the Village Fair in old Carlsbad, there are two Mermaids stores run by the same super savvy owner. One store is a beach themed gift shop. I literally want everything in this store-a visual treat filled with usual and beautiful items. I've put together several gift baskets for girlfriends just shopping in this one place. Next, check out Mermaids apparel shop which is located toward the back of Village Fair. I'm pretty hard to please with clothes , but this store is pleasure incarnate. Such an attractive layout, super attentive staff, and a buyer with a great eye. Linger here for awhile with your friends. Cute little store in Carlsbad. Prices are high on some things and good on others. Bought earrings for my friend for her birthday. I found some lotion that was really expensive. If it had not been on sale for half off I would never have gotten it. Same with another item. The sale price was what I thought it should have cost. How can one spend $800 for over priced clothes and the retail clerk refused to put them in gift boxes? Instead dumps boxes and tissue paper in undersized bags. Not even a bag big enough for a purse available. Crappy service and you are exposed in the dressing rooms as the curtains do not close. Santa had a choice between two black sweaters. He chose the one he purchased. I ask the other one be saved and I would pick it up tomorrow. Today I went in to Pick It Up. Then another retail clerk had put it back because no name was on it. Another poor customer service from first clerk. The second one brought their crappy over priced Miracle Sweaters. They hair ball after one washing rather than getting me the original sweater I tried on last night. I haven't been in this store as a local for at least a year. Trying to appease my Santa I went back in. I do NOT Recommend this store to locals or tourist. My experience was poor and time consuming. Poor customer service and overpriced merchandise. This store is my go to for gifts. Mermaids is the most wonderful small locally owned shop for beach theme items. There selection is huge and there is always something wonderful there to pick up for either yourself or someone special in your life. I used to buy all their ornaments but I have since bought clothing, home and bath items, perfume ( sand is my favorite ) and even cards. There is a children's store adjacent which is also a great place to pick up something for a baby shower. The owners are fantastic people and everyone working there is extremely helpful and great to talk. This store is amazing and totally worth my drive from Rancho Bernardo. The staff are always nice and friendly - they are never pushy and in fact it's kind of like shopping with a friend. They really care about their customers. The clothing is original, very beautiful and a bit pricey, but I imagine the rent is high in the cute shopping center where it is located. I was there that day, that Teresa, the person that left a one star review was there. All I can say is me, and the other person in the store were shocked to hear this lady speak. She literally said it was demeaning for women to ever apologize. It seemed as if she was off her meds. I had never heard anybody speak so demeaning to another individual before. I've been coming to the store for quite some time and the service and product quality have always been outstanding. Look, it is much more likely that you'll find me in a fishing tackle store, Home Depot, or a 7-Eleven than a cutesy Carlsbad boutique. But when you're hanging with your bride in C-bad village, and you're somewhere between leaving the bar (where you swilled several cheladas) and arriving back to the hotel courtesy of a bizarre Uber driver, you sometimes find yourself looking at silverware sets featuring mermaids on the handles.... Enter Mermaids of Carlsbad. This whole store is sort of that off-white ivory color, and that bluish, teal color that flashes across a dying Dorado after you stick him with the gaff (if you've seen it, you know what I'l talking about.) Apparently, those are the colors of mermaids. Remember in the first BLUES BROTHERS movie, when Jake says, "This place has got everything!" If he was talking about mermaids, then Mermaids of Carlsbad would be so aptly described. Cards, hand towels, shower curtains, place settings, Christmas ornaments, t-shirts, shelf-sitters, chess sets, shot glasses-- all featuring those half-woman, half-fish creatures of mythology. Luckily, my four year old daughter loves mermaids. Alas, this store is a bit older than her interest, but the owner sent us over to the sister store in the complex. See other review for that one. I LOVE Mermaids! It is my absolute go to for gifts. Their sister clothing store is amazing too! The gifts are very unique and always well received when I give them to friends and family. The stores are beautifully layed-out and super relaxing. It's not over-packed or stuffy and they always burn the best smelling candles. I don't get why someone mentioned their prices. If you want cheap gifts- go to a discount big box store like Costco or Marshall's. Mermaids is a lovely shopping experience and the Village is lucky to have such a gem. Especially with so many small shops going out of business due to COVID. I ALWAYS support local when I can! My daughters love their clothing store as do I. Excellent when you want a nice outfit to impress for weddings, travel or summer outings! They also carry Cobian sandals which are the most comfortable but don't have the high price tag of other beach sandals. My daughter was getting cold when we were there visiting my sister so we stopped in to look for a jacket. By chance we found a zip up sweatshirt in her favorite color. It was $60 but I figured she'd wear it a lot. I washed it the next day and it pilled *horribly. It looks so cheap and IS indicative it is made of very low quality materials. Their return policy is so crazy short there was no way to get back to the store in time to return it from Newport (we live over an hour away with good traffic). I was told it was not returnable even if I could, because I washed it. If you're looking for good quality backed by the owner skip this retailer. read more

Really / avoid this place. We bought a candle there, and went 2 doors down to Linda's, and the exact same candle was $6 less! Mermaids totally gouges the visitor. They won't do returns either - only store credit - snd the lady was really bitter snd hostile about it. Too many lively shops with lovely people to promote this type of business snd owner. read more

This place has a really nice vibe and and amazing collection of items mermaid themed and just Carlsbad souvenirs. The staff was also nice stopped by a few times just never bought anything really because everything is very over-priced, until my last visit I bought a mermaid doll for my daughter. That's the only reason for the one star missing. It's just very expensive. But really nice place. Also in a nice location. Beach 10 minute walk away, in the middle of Carlsbad village so many locations around to eat, relax, and explore. read more

I have been in this store twice now. Both times I walked in with a couple of friends. We're all teachers and went to spend the day relaxing near the beach , walking around and doing a little local shopping. The first time I walked in I was not greeted and was ignored the entire time. My friends came in a few minutes later and they were immediately greeted and were offered help and conversation throughout their time. I didn't think anything at the moment until I went back a few weeks later. I walk in and again received zero acknowledgement. A minute later a family comes in and they were immediately welcomed. Needless to say I noticed a pattern at that moment. Never in my life had it occurred to me because I'd never felt that before, but I felt discriminated. I am a highly educated woman in her 40's, born in the US of Hispanic heritage and for the first time I felt I wasn't treated like the rest. We are all entitled to our own feelings and I won't judge this lady for it, but I definitely will not be returning to this store even though they had such a lovely selection of items. I gave it 2 starts because the store and items are lovely, but I'd give it zero stars for the service I received. read more

OMG, I just discovered this awesome clothing & gift store! It has the perfect clothing for Southern Cal! It'll be my first stop with out-of-town guests! I just threw out all my work suits looking for a more Professional Smart Casual look! Mermaids has the best, old fashion service, Norma knows the store and waits on you hand & foot!! She has wonderful taste & suggestions for the best look for your body (at least for my body). She introduced me to Chatoyant line of clothes that I purchased & wore out of the store for my next appointmentThe jewelry compliments the apparel without looking too perfect! The only negative is the 3 hour parking limit. You need to change your parking spot every 3 hours, but I found plenty of parking during the day. I normally enjoy coming in this boutique... I have shopped many times there, actually. Today, I returned an item of clothing that had a defect. Kelly, the sales woman who helped me was very nice and accommodating. As, I was looking around the store the other clerk (she acts like the owner of the store) was questioning her on what I returned. What a cute little store! They have wonderful jems hidden - I bought pants there about 2 years ago. I keep getting compliments on them every time I wear them. I absolutely love this little boutique. I manage a vacation rental up the road in Carlsbad for our family and I wanted to get our guests little welcome gifts upon their arrival. I had originally planned on going in Linda's gifts, which I also love, but this store caught my eye and just drew me in. Plus I wanted to try something different so I could tell our guests about the shops in the area if they asked. The gals who work there are incredibly sweet and accommodating. I usually am assisted by Lisa when I am there and she was so helpful in helping me pick out some little gifts for our upcoming guests explaining which items sell the best and are bought most by tourists. She explained to me that the gorgeous little Christmas ornaments are best sellers. They are reasonably priced at approx $8 each depending on which design you get. So that is what I went with and have ALWAYS received fantastic feedback from our guests. Lisa and the girls who work there will always gift wrap my purchases for free so all I need to do is leave it on the bed for our guests. This store has SO MANY cute things and I can never make it over to the side of the store that has the clothes as I get so caught up in all the gorgeous trinkets and beachy decor items they have in the first half of the store lol. Just being in there makes me feel calm and relaxed, unless I have my 3 year old with me haha. Highly recommend this charming boutique to all! read more

My husband and I are local Carlsbad residents. We had run across this store browsing the other day and thought that it had very cute items. We found a floor rug that we liked, but wanted to take measurements to make sure it would fit in our space. We returned to the store to purchase the item, but the store was closed. I am giving two stars instead of one, since the hours of operation are correct on Yelp, however they are incorrect on the actual store website, as well as Google Maps (stated hours currently say they are open until 7:00 PM on Saturday, we arrived a little after 6:00 PM). The individual working at the store was rather dismissive to us when we pointed out that the hours were incorrect on their website. Times are tough for a lot of retail right now; seems odd they did not appear to want our business. read more
