Simply, the best in the business. Their honesty and quick assessments are extremely fair priced. I brought my vehicle in for what I thought was going to be a possible minor repair. Though it was something more significant, they were able to start my repair immediately. They are excellent with communicating the process of the vehicles repair as well as keeping the time frame initially given. The lobby is clean and has an excellent big screen tv to keep oneself occupied. If I could give more than five stars I would. I will be referring everyone here for their vehicle repairs. read more

I brought my car in for brakes today, I have 111,500 miles on it and never had brakes changed so I figured I'd about time. After getting a price of around $1000 for both axles, pads and rotors I said to do the work. Upon inspection they could not find anything wrong with my brakes, pads were fine and no rotor warping, when the service manager told me this I was shocked, he said everything looked good. I feel if I would have gone anywhere else they would have sold me the farm. I was so happy to find out my breaks were good, I saved $1000 and there are still honest people around. Needless to say I told him I will be back there for any future mechanical issues. Oh did I mention they were very friendly as well. read more

Will never in my entire life patronize this business! They tell lies to cover up their total incompetency to perform repairs. Have caused me to lose money and time from work because of it too. Do not come to this location at all. Just go to Tuffys on 135th & Route 59 or to Just Tires in Oswego, IL instead. These people are so wrong it's ridiculous. I have been repairing cars for 30 years. I decided I was getting too old to perform these tasks, so I brought my car in for front-end work. Before bringing the car in, I inspected all front-end parts, but it can be exceedingly difficult without the proper equipment. However, I determined with 100% certainty that the lower ball joints needed to be replaced. After Merlin inspected the car, I received a call, and they informed me, "no, no, no, the problem you are describing is not your lower ball joints. What you need are struts." I agreed to the replacement and then received another call "well, you have new struts, but it didn't solve the problem. We want to replace all front-end parts." I told them no and had them perform an alignment since I wasn't sure how long it would be before I could complete the repairs myself. When I picked up the car, the steering wheel was crooked, and the car did not track straight. At this point, I decided to cut my losses and deemed this shop completely incompetent. I decided to perform the repairs myself. I completed a more thorough inspection and found what was causing the issue. The noise was coming from the sway bar links, which cost $25 each and are very easy to replace. I replaced the sway bar links and also replaced the lower ball joints because I knew they were bad. Once I had the ball joints out of the car, they were so loose I would consider them borderline dangerous. Then I had the car aligned at another shop, and the steering is perfect now. We have been a customer since the store opened and we have nothing but GREAT things to say! Jason and staff go above and beyond to help the customer. He has kept the shop open after hours so I could pick up my car, driven me home on many occasions, inspected a few cars before I purchased them, fixed them for $ hundreds less than a dealer and the list goes on! Had my Corolla serviced here for an idle problem that I could not figure out. I replaced several parts with no results. They checked it out and were able to get rid of the idle issue. They also replace my tires and changed the oil. Everthing cost for approx $300.00. It was well worth it. Will come back for future service. The guys there were very professional. read more

We started taking our 95 Lincoln for maintenance at this location based on a referral. These people seemlike they were truly helping us.But instead they were causing problems and trying to get us to spend unnecessary $$$$$. The car simply put had more issues when we would get it back. On a more recent note the mechanic expressed to my husband he had two major oil leaks one. The main leak they said would cost $800 to repair we were told the oil pan was rusted out and needed to be replaced. My husband decided to do the job himself and bought the parts from Autozone totaling $67. After starting he realized the oil pan was not rusted but they had striped the main screw. Long story short we bought a $4 screw plug and returned the other parts. I hate when people try a stiff u its demeaning. As you may see in another Yelp review I had same thing happen at another maintenance shop, so you can bet this always has my attention. Been coming to this Melins Plainfield location for last 4yrs since I moved to town. From $1000 jobs to regular oil changes. Last time I had my oil change here I noticed they didn't change my oil filter. You may wonder how would you know that. Well on my 2006 Kia Sedona, the oil filter is on the top of the engine and you have to take off a plastic cover that is held on by 4 bolts. You can watch through the waiting room into the shop. If you are knowledgeable of the situation you will know and can see them with a socket and taking the time to remove it. This past week, any reasonable person would have drawn my same conclusion that the intent was to not change the oil filter. I watched him change the oil and not the filter and I went out into the shop and called him out on it. I watched as he drained the oil put the car back down added the oil and put the cap on it right when I was walking out there and he says to me "you are all ready to go". I said did you change the oil filter? After a brief hesitation, oh yeah I was going to do that right now. Seriously? Change the oil filter after you drained the old oil and already added the new oil. Knowing this is not normally the way to change oil, I called two local Kia dealerships and talked to their service departments. Both were in shock that someone would intentionally change oil in that order and last change the filter. Go online and research how to change oil in these cars. Not a single video will they recommend changing the oil filter as the last step. Hence, why I truly believe he was not going to replace it in the first place until I brought it up. In my opinion, they don't like to change these oil filters because it is more time consuming. Remove the four bolts and up with the plastic piece. Once you unscrew the oil filter housing there are two gaskets that need replacing that comes with the oil filter. Once I got done talking the the Kia mechanics, I went inside to pay and to voice my concern with the front end staff, of course they denied it. Said they always change the oil filters. They have a whole wall of filters back there why wouldn't they. I can't answer that. I guess my mistake was I should have not said anything and seen if they would have handed it back over to me without changing it. We will never know, but just thought I would share with you a bizarre way of changing oil. You make your own opinion as if you think they may be hustling the consumer. read more

Literally always have a problem at this shop. I told myself last time that it would be my last time, but due to the convenience of it being so close to my home I figured I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. These guys can't even to a simple oil change without making sure that my under body plate was clicked in. So I was riding around w it until I noticed it was making a scratchy sound then took it right back. This was not the first time I've had problems at this location but I promise when I say that this is the LAST time they'll get my money. Lol petty as hell. Not to mention these punk kids workin on it in the back leaning on other people's cars spitting in the garage every 5 seconds shits nasty as hell. read more

I cant say enough good things about this establishment. They corrected others work and had me still driving while they fixed all that was wrong with my car. Jason and Kevin had great customer service and the tech Mike that serviced my car was so knowledgeable. I am definitely happy with the service I recieved. I've been coming to this particular Merlins since it opened, I have known the management team since then. Their service allowed my 2006 Hyundai Sonata to reach over 200,000 miles and now I have a Kia Soul that I'm sure will reach the same thanks to Jason and the mechanics at Merlins. I went to this location about a month ago for an oil change. I have been a regular customer of Merlin for the last 18 months. Merlin pulled out my air filter and asked if I wanted a replacement. I denied as I did not have the money to change it at the time. The other night I ran into a big problem. I had been out of town on business, when I started my car it sputtered and died. I needed a jump start. The guy who started my car noticed a box fluttering open. He opened it and noticed the air filter was missing!!! Missing?!?! Merlin did not place the air filter back into my car. I've been driving around for the past month without an air filter without realizing it. I spent $300 getting sensors fixed with another garage. I will not trust Merlin with my car again. read more

Wow! Took me care here for brakes and they charge $135 per hour labor. You are better off taking your car to the dealer.

Great place to grab a quick oil change. They were fast and quick and didn't lecture me at all about the dirtiness I'd my oil.

I went in because had my exhaust pipe broke before the cat. Was told I needed a new y pipe for 350. I got the estimate and left. Went to the Merlin on route 59 and was told my y pipe was fine. I will be writing a review on that experience on their page. In all this shop tried to rip me off but did not know that I knew what was wrong. read more

I have been going to the owner Chris's Merlin in Aurora for years. When he mentioned he had a new shop in Plainfield, I started coming here. The guys are wonderful. A couple of times I've had minor issues after leaving and had to bring my car back to be checked out. They fixed the problems quickly and with no additional charge. I've been going see Jason and the crew at Merlin for several years now, and it's time I took a couple of minutes to say a few nice things! I've had General Tires for 3 cars, which are fabulous. I don't see me swapping brands anytime soon. They are fair with prices, and I am quite sure that I've never been sold anything I didn't need. Which brings me to yesterday... my 74 MGB had been making some grinding noises when starting, and then it decided to not turn over at all. After giving the car a little push, the starter seemed to catch the flywheel and I was able to start it. I drove over to Merlin and I was able to show them the grinding noise. I left it there and got a call in an hour that they had looked at it. Joe informed me that one of the bolts was loose on the starter, and could very well be why it was grinding. I took the car home with instructions to "just keep an eye on it. It could be the starter is bad, but let's see what happens." Regardless of whether the starter turns out to be bad, I truly appreciate the fact that they didn't just throw a new one on there. Obviously that would have fixed the issue, and I would never have known about the loose bolt. I think that says an awful lot for this shop. Oh, and the cost? $0. They know I'll be back! Even when we had issues that the repairs didn't entirely resolve the initial problem, they worked with us and helped mitigate the additional expense. The staff are very courteous but sometimes I can't really trust their assessment or recommendations. I have a Toyota prius that came up with a check engine light so I take my car to auto zone to get a free reading. After I had all the codes and did a quick Google search on the codes, I proceded to take the car to this car shop cause I have experience with them. I drop it off early in the morning with the intent of picking up later on that afternoon and go through that assessment with them. I got their around 12 pm, 4 hours after they opened and they only had chicken scratch of what they looked at. They didn't get all the codes correct and their solution wasnt even present. I had to wait another hr for them to put a quote together for me of solutions and costs. It was annoying and the fact that they didn't present their recommendation or couldn't walk me through the steps of how they said what they said was very unprofessional. Makes me think they put something together on the fly. I will be going to get a second opinion. read more

Unfortunately my car broke down on the side of the road just a little bit down from this location. After the guys there were so nice and helpful in helping me get my car there it all went downhill. I waited two days and called multiple times and they kept telling me someone was still looking at it. When I finally got the call I was told that it was going to cost $5000 to fix my engine or $3500 to put in an engine that had 50,000 miles on it. Being a single mother of 4 - I'm sure they thought they were going to make bank off of me. I let them know that I didn't have that kind of money and that I was going to have it towed from there to somewhere else. To add insult to injury - the person that I was talking to asked what I was going to do with the car because he would be willing to buy it from me. I then had it towed to another mechanic who let me know that I did not need a new engine and the part that I needed to fix my car was $400. I am disgusted by people that act so nicely and help me by the side of the road and set me up to think they are trying to help me while the whole time they had ulterior motives to take advantage of me. If I could give negative stars that would be ideal. read more

They are getting one star because the staff was courteous upon arrival yesterday and because i can't give them zero stars. I took my truck in to the shop because i had a connector leak from my trans line to my radiator. They told me they would call me today with a price. This morning, i was told that i had 3 leaky transmission lines that would cost $334 plus $150 for labor and that i would need a whole new radiator (at an undisclosed cost) in addition to the lines. My radiator is actually brand new so that is untrue. I also do not have leaky transmission lines. This was verified by another certified technician at another shop. So, had i not done my research, i would have spent $500 unnecessarily as opposed to picking up the needed connectors at a local parts store and having them installed for significantly less. I'm really disappointed that this company tried to take advantage of me and needless to say, i won't be going back. I will also be sharing this information with other social media sites so that people know this is not a shop to be trusted. read more

I tried this shop after feeling used and abused by several area mechanics. Both my vehicles had check engine lights and I was expecting a fairly large bill. I got the large bill, but this time I felt like I knew why and they weren't just telling me things to get my money. They walked me into the bay where my car was on the lift and showed me what they were talking about that needed repair. They also told me what was absolutely necessary and what could wait. The next day, one of the check engine lights went back on and they looked at it again at no charge. They pointed out some pretty serious damage done by a previous mechanic who did not put the engine wires back they way they should be which is causing them to short out and fray. They are prompt with their service, they communicate well, and they are professional. I feel like this is an honest shop and Joe (front desk guy) and the two technicians I worked with are very helpful. read more
